Аннотация: The present publication is a welcome contribution of the followup to UNCED. By focusing on a specific problem, it avoids the pitfall of undue generalization and provides the basis for fruitful discussion between natural scientists, social scientists,and policymakers. To choose as the area of concertration a particular scale also helped to produce meaningful discussion likely to lead to action. In both the natural and the social sciences, the question of scale is of keyimportance as different types of phenomena occur at different scales and different explanatory laws are formulated at these separate scales. Political structures and procedures also differ widely at national, regional, and global scales.The regional scale poses many problems for all the groups interested in global warming. The regional effects of the increase in greenhouse gases are known with less certainty than the global effects. The suitability of the present regional organizations,established and designed on the basis of other economic and political priorities, to deal with problems of environment and development has to be carefylly evaluated and some adaptations may be necessary. The present publication contains an important review both of these general problems and of specific problems related to freshwater resources and to marine resources. It provides an excellent starting point for further work on these important topics. The organizers and authors are to be congratulated on what has been achieved.

Аннотация: Effects of Acid Rain on Forest Processes investigates the influence of acidification on forest soil, rhizosphere, and plant life, and on the processes linking them. The Solling Project, which ran from 1966 to 1973 in Europe, was a pioneering study on forest ecosystems. Because European forests have suffered the effects of acid rain years ahead of hose in North America, this book will provide a valuable glimpse of what may lie ahead in North America. This book reflects the more recent developments in investigations of the consequences of acid deposition. It has become increasingly clear that the major influence of acid deposition is indirect, i.e. the effects are mediated by changes in soil chemistry that influence all other processes. Аннотация: The book presents the principal schemes of the rhythmic variability of coniferous growth in the upper and northern limits in Eurasia in the form of generalized series for 400 and 500 years accordingly. A possibility of using the dendroindicator information for quantitative values of the influence of natural processes (fluctuating climate, mountain glaciation, volcanism, consequences of Tungus catastrophe, and others) and industrial waste on tree growth is examined. An interdependence is revealed concerning the tree growth anomalies distribution at the Extreme North of Eurasia, Scandinavia, Alaska, and Labrador with regards to changes of atmosphere circulation, fields of temperature anomalies, iciness of the Baltic Sea, Arctic Ocean, and geomagnetic and solar activity. Аннотация: Market globalization and the globalization of environmental concerns have spurred demand for greater international accountability for forest stewardship. In response, a range of multi-lateral governmental and non-governmental initiatives have emerged to redefine the rules of global trade, and demand verification of the legality and/or sustainability of forest products originating from within and outside national boundaries. At the same time there is a lack of transparency and shared understanding about the environmental forest policies that already exist within the world's leading forest producing and consuming countries. The result is that many stakeholders have developed perceptions about a country's regulatory environment that are not consistent with what is actually taking place. This book provides a uniquely detailed and systematic comparison of environmental forest policies and enforcement in twenty countries worldwide, covering developed, transition and developing economies. Аннотация: A major task for IIASA is to provide insight into complex problems facing the world today. These activities require interdisciplinary analysis, which, in turn, must be founded on extensive data collection and research. Collecting and verifying these data for IIASA research call for major investments of both time and money. Unfortunately, these painstaking, long-term activities rarely attract public attention or receive the credit they deserve. IIASA's goal is to disseminate research results based on these data to the decision makers whose actions will influence the world of the future. During 1998, efforts by IIASA and its cooperating institutions resulted in three books that promise to have considerable impact on policy in their fields. Drawing on years of research, these works provide insight into requirements for affective international agreements to protect the environment, issues of future energy use, and past and future development of technology.

Аннотация: Large geographical areas are situated at latitudes higher than the two polar circles. Until recently, they were shown little scientific interest. However, atmospheric phenomena occurring in these regions are now recognized to influence markedly the mid and low latitude climate and atmospheric chemistry. In the Arctic, atmospheric pollution is increasing and environmental research programs have been initiated over the last decade to investigate its impact and trends. In the southern hemisphere, high latitude regions are still relatively unspoiled by human activities and are therefore often seen as a symbol of a pristine atmospheric environment, even if several anthropogenic compounds are in fact present worldwide due to their long residence time in the atmosphere. Serious efforts have been made in recent years to gain a better understanding of polar atmospheric chemistry, accompanied by an increasing number of ice core studies conducted on the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.
