    Evidence of evergreen conifer invasion into larch dominated forests during recent decades in Central Siberia

Аннотация: Models of climate warming predict the migration of "warm-adapted' species to habitates of "cold-adapted" species. Here we show evidence of expansion of "dark-needle" conifers (DNC: Siberian pine, spruce and fir) into the habitat of larch, the leader in adaptation to harsh climatic conditions in Asia. The studies were made along two transects oriented from the western and southern borders of a larch dominated forest to its center. The invasion of DNC into the historical larch habitat was quantified as an increase of the proportion of those species both in the overstory and in regeneration. The age structure of regeneration showed that regeneration occurred mainly during the last 2-3 decades. In particular warm winter temperatures promote the survival regenerated Siberian pine. The results obtained indicate the climate-driven migration of Siberian pine, spruce and fir into traditional zone of larch dominance. Substitution of a deciduous conifer (larch) by evergreen conifers decreases the albedo and may provide positive feedback for temperature increases.

Аннотация: The runoff of some Siberian, Central Asia, and Western European rivers is modelled to analyse the relative influence of climate. The runoff data were analysed by multiple regression analysis. Thus a change of runoff formation can be used as an environmental indicator for sustainable land use. The river runoff integrates changes of land surface/atmosphere exchange processes in the entire catchment. These processes can be drastically altered by human land use change.

Аннотация: The Siberian moth (SM), is the most destructive defoliator of conifers in Northern Asia. It could have a serious impact on native forests. The present day monitoring methods of SM populations density, based on trees shaking for larve sampling, are labor-intensive, expensive and require an optimization. Although larve sampling is an extremely expensive procedure, only its' results may be a basis for presribed insecticide spraying of pest population.

A review of investignations of the Siberian moth outbreak of 1989-1997 demonstrates different ecological and economic consequences of the global ecological phenomenon.

Аннотация: This is a short review of our recent studies on trophic adaptation of a boreal forest pest, the Siberian moth in its native range, North Asia and in Central Europe where the species is believed to invade in a near future. In Europe, the hierarchy in suitability of host plant genera (increasing from two-needle pines, spruce, fir, to larch) remains similar to that in the pest range. Besides European plants, some North American conifers from genera which do not exist in the pest habitat can be served as potential hosts for the insect.

Аннотация: Information on land cover at global and continental scales is critical for addressing a range of ecological, socioeconomic and policy questions. Global land cover maps have evolved rapidly in the last decade, but efforts to evaluate map uncertainties have been limited, especially in remote areas like Northern Eurasia. Northern Eurasia comprises a particularly diverse region covering a wide range of climate zones and ecosystems: from arctic deserts, tundra, boreal forest, and wetlands, to semi-arid steppes and the deserts of Central Asia. In this study, we assessed four of the most recent global land cover datasets: GLC-2000, GLOBCOVER, and the MODIS Collection 4 and Collection 5 Land Cover Product using cross-comparison analyses and Landsat-based reference maps distributed throughout the region. A consistent comparison of these maps was challenging because of disparities in class definitions, thematic detail, and spatial resolution. We found that the choice of sampling unit significantly influenced accuracy estimates, which indicates that comparisons of reported global map accuracies might be misleading. To minimize classification ambiguities, we devised a generalized legend based on dominant life form types (LFT) (tree, shrub, and herbaceous vegetation, barren land and water). LFT served as a necessary common denominator in the analyzed map legends, but significantly decreased the thematic detail. We found significant differences in the spatial representation of LFT's between global maps with high spatial agreement (above 0.8) concentrated in the forest belt of Northern Eurasia and low agreement (below 0.5) concentrated in the northern taiga-tundra zone, and the southern dry lands. Total pixel-level agreement between global maps and six test sites was moderate to fair (overall agreement: 0.67-0.74, Kappa: 0.41-0.52) and increased by 0.09-0.45 when only homogenous land cover types were analyzed. Low map accuracies at our tundra test site confirmed regional disagreements and difficulties of current global maps in accurately mapping shrub and herbaceous vegetation types at the biome borders of Northern Eurasia. In comparison, tree dominated vegetation classes in the forest belt of the region were accurately mapped, but were slightly overestimated (10%-20%), in all maps. Low agreement of global maps in the northern and southern vegetation transition zones of Northern Eurasia is likely to have important implications for global change research, as those areas are vulnerable to both climate and socio-economic changes. Аннотация: Studies in Central Asia (Altai-Sayan region, northwest and central Mongolia) have shown that trees growing in arid conditions of mountain forest-steppes have a mixed and unstable climatic response. It is obvious that this nature of the climatic response of trees prevents the use of tree-ring chronologies for climate reconstruction. In this connection, it is necessary to separate the climatic signal of tree-ring chronologies, i.e., extract the signal for moisture. This paper proposes a method for separating the climatic signal of tree-ring chronologies of mountain forest-steppes, and reports estimates of its reliability by two independent methods. Analysis of the chronologies obtained after separation of the signal, based on meteorological and hydrological data, has shown that these chronologies can be used for climate reconstructions.

Аннотация: We developed a network of tree-ring width chronologies of larch (Larix sibirica Led.) from upper tree-lines of the southeast Altai Mountains, South Siberia. Annual tree-ring variability of chronologies since A.D. 1710 was compared using factor analysis. The factor analysis clustered eight tree-ring chronologies into two groups that were used for compositing chronologies. One resulting composite chronology (A.D. 1582-1994) averaged sites from upper tree-lines in glacier-free areas and another chronology (A.D. 10901999) captured the sites at upper tree-lines in valleys of the Korumdu, Aktru, Yan-Karasu and Kizil-Tash Glaciers (North-Chuya Range). There is no significant difference in the estimated strength of temperature signals (June and July) of the composite chronologies. However, we observed a remarkable contrast in the decadal variability of larch growth between upper tree-lines of glacier-free areas and glacier valleys. The tree-ring growth of larch was coherent among the chronologies for the period A.D. 1582-1725. Suddenly, low-frequency similarity declined around A.D. 1730. The magnitude of differences became more pronounced after A.D. 1775 indicating three periods with opposite growth tendency (1775-1850, 1900-1915 and 1960-1994) that alternated with short periods of coherent growth. We assume that the low-frequency signal in the glacier valley larch chronology accommodates oscillations of both summer temperature and glacier dynamics. The periods of low-frequency departures are consistent with the 19th Century advance and tremendous 20th Century retreat of the glaciers. We argue that expanded glaciers enhance harmful impacts of katabatic wind on larch growth. It appears that employing tree rings from upper tree-lines of glaciated areas for estimation of decadal and centennial variability climatic proxies should be selected with great caution.

Аннотация: Two quantitative methods were used to reconstruct paleoenvironments and vegetation in the Altai-Sayan mountains, Central Asia, during the Holocene. The 'biomization' method of Prentice et al (1996 Clim. Dyn. 12 185-96), applied to the surface pollen record, worked fairly well in the reconstructions of current vegetation. Applying this method to fossil pollen data, we reconstructed site paleovegetation. Our montane bioclimatic model, MontBioCliM, was used inversely to convert site paleovegetation into site paleoclimates. The differences between site paleo and current climates served as past climate change scenarios. The climatic anomalies for 2020, 2050, and 2080 derived from HadCM3 A1FI and B1 of the Hadley Centre, UK, served as climate change scenarios in the 21st century. MontBioCliM was applied directly to all climate scenarios through the Holocene to map past and future mountain vegetation over the Altai-Sayan mountains. Our results suggest that the early Holocene ca 10 000 BP was cold and dry; the period between 8000 and 5300 BP was warm and moist; and the time slice ca 3200 BP was cooler and drier than the present. Using kappa statistics, we showed that the vegetation at 8000 BP and 5300 BP was similar, as was the vegetation at 10 000 BP and 3200 BP, while future vegetation was predicted to be dissimilar to any of the paleovegetation reconstructions. The mid-Holocene is frequently hypothesized to be an analog of future climate warming; however, being known as warm and moist in Siberia, the mid-Holocene climate would likely impact terrestrial ecosystems differently from the projected warm and dry mid-century climate.

Аннотация: An introduction is given to the geography of Russian forests and to the specific conditions of the study sites located along the 60degrees latitude east of Moscow (Fyedorovskoe) near the Ural Mountains (Syktivkar) and in Central Siberia near the Yennisei river (Zotino). The climatic conditions were similar at all three sites. The main ecological parameter that changes between European Russia and Siberia is the length of the growing season (230 d above 0 degreesC NE Moscow to 170 d above 0 degreesC in Central Siberia) and to a lesser extent precipitation (580 mm NE Moscow to 530 mm in Central Siberia). The experimental sites were generally similar to the regional conditions,. although the Tver region has less forest and more grassland than the central forest reserve, and the Komi region has slightly less wetland than the study area. The Krasnoyarsk region reaches from the arctic ocean to and central Asia and contains a significant proportion of non-forest land. The boreal forest of west and east Yennisei differs mainly with respect to wetlands, which cover almost half of the land area on the west bank. All sites are prone to disturbance. Heavy winds and drought or surplus water are the main disturbance factors in European Russia (a 15-20 yr cycle), and fire is the dominating disturbance factor in Siberia (220-375 yr for stand replacing fires).

Аннотация: A detailed description is presented of the statistical patterns of climate forcing of tree growth (annual maximum latewood density and ring-width time series), across a network of 387 specially selected conifer sites that circle the extra-tropical Northern Hemisphere, The influence of summer temperature dominates growth. A mean April-September response is optimum for describing the major forcing signal over the whole densitometric network, though a shorter June-July season is more relevant in central and eastern Siberia. The ring-width chronologies also have a shorter optimum (June-August) seasonal signal, but this is much weaker than the density signal. The association between tree-ring density and precipitation variability (as measured by partial correlations to account for the correlation between temperature and precipitation) is considerably weaker than with temperature. The ring-width response to precipitation is dominated by 'noise' and local site influences, though a negative response to winter precipitation in northern Siberia is consistent A with the suggestion of an influence of delayed snowmelt. Average correlations with winter temperatures are small for all regions and correlations with annual temperatures are positive only because of the strong link with summer temperatures. Reconstructions of summer temperature based on composite regional density chronologies for nine areas are presented. Five regions (northwestern North America, NWNA; eastern and central Canada, ECCA; northern Europe. NEUR; northern Siberia, NSIB; and eastern Siberia, ESIB) constitute an arbitrary 'northern' division of the network, while the four other regions (western North America, WNA; southern Europe, SEUR; central Asia, CAS and the Tibetan Plateau, TIBP) make up the 'southern' part, We also present two larger composite regional reconstructions comprising the data from the five higher-latitude (HILAT) and four lower-latitude (LOLAT) areas respectively: and a single series made up of data from all regions (ALL), which is highly correlated with Northern Hemisphere mean summer temperature. We calculate time-dependent uncertainty ranges for each of these reconstructions, though they are not intended to represent long timescales of temperature variability (>100 years) because the technique used to assemble the site chronologies precludes this. Finally, we examine in more detail the reduced sensitivity in the tree-growth data to decadal-timescale summer-temperature trends during the last 50 years, identified in earlier published work.

Аннотация: Reconstruction of climate change in Central Asia over the last millennium with an annual resolution was made using geochemical and biological proxy in lake bottom sediments and tree-ring data. We investigated the lake in Central Asia- Teletskoe (Altai), Kucherla (Altai), Baikal, Arahlei (Chita) - and adjacent areas. Cores of bottom sediments were investigated by method of scanning X-ray fluorescent analysis with synchrotron radiation with the spatial resolution of 0.1 mm. It corresponds to the time resolution ~ 0.2-0.5 year. At each point analyzed more than 30 trace elements from K to U. Geochemical proxy of terrigenous, organogenous and aerosol components of sediments well correlated with regional meteodata for the last 100-150 years. Time series of lithological-geochemical indicators of climate change based on dating by 14C, 137Cs and 210Pb was calibrated by instrumental hydrometeorological data. We used tree-ring series together with element contents as an additional proxy for calculation of transfer function, considering that tree-ring series are response to summer temperature in this climatic zone. Annual temperature and precipitation change for the Central Asia region (0 - 1000 years ago) have been reconstructed using the transfer functions such as: time series proxy=function (temperature, precipitation).

Аннотация: Chromosome numbers for some species of Central Asia steppe shrubs are given: Rhamnus erythroxylon Pall. (Rhamnaceae), Caragana buriatica Peschk. (Fabaceae), Amygdalus pedunculata Pall., Armeniaca sibirica (L.) Lam. (Rosaceae), Atraphaxis pungens (Bieb.) Jaub. et Spach, and A. frutescens (L.) C. Koch (Polygonaceae). Chromosome numbers of some species were determined for the first time. A comparative analysis of adaptive properties of polyploidy and diploid species has been conducted. It was established that natural polyploids are more adaptive to existence in extreme conditions. They possess a high potential for survival and are characterized by a higher level of intraspecific polymorphism, abundant flowering and fruitification, ability to propagate both via generative and vegetative means, and high seed germination.     Larval performances and life cycle completion of the Siberian moth, Dendrolimus sibiricus (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae), on potential host plants in Europe: A laboratory study on potted trees

Аннотация: The Siberian moth, Dendrolimus sibiricus, Tschtv. is the most harmful defoliator of coniferous forests in North Asia. The pest has already spread over the Urals and continues moving westwards. Recently, it has been recommended for quarantine in member countries by European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO). The performances of the pest on coniferous species planted in Europe were assessed on a range of potted trees corresponding to the spectrum of economically important conifers in the EU: European larch Larix decidua, Norway spruce Picea abies, Scots pine Pinus sylvestris, European black pine Pinus nigra, and the North American species: Douglas fir Pseudotsuga menziesii and grand fir Abies grandis. Larvae showed a potential to survive and complete the development on all these host tree species. Favorable hosts were grand fir, European larch, and Douglas fir that allowed higher survival, better larval development, and as a result, yielded heavier pupae and adult moths with higher longevity. Black pine was a poor host but, however, could still support larval and pupal development. Norway spruce and Scots pine had an intermediate behavior. If accidentally introduced to Europe, the Siberian moth may become especially damaging in forest stands predominated by European larch and by the North American firs. Norway spruce and especially the two-needle pines will be less prone to intensive defoliation by this species. The fact that the pest may damage the range of economically important coniferous species should be taken into account in the pest risk assessment for Europe and also for North America where the Siberian moth occurrence is considered likely.
