Performance of various methods of fire weather danger rating in the South Lake Baikal forests
: abstract / T. M. Sofronova // Enviromis. International conference on environmental observations, modelling and information systems, Tomsk, Russia, July 1-8, 2006: program and abstracts. - 2006. - С. 97

Аннотация: We tested Russian indices: Nesterov index (PN, 1968), Leningrad Research Institute index PV-1, 1975), Krasnoyarsk Forest Institute index (PVG, 1990) as well as Canadian index (FWI,1987) - in the South Lake Baikal area on the territory of the Sludyanka Forest Office (351 thousand ha). The performance criterion was the correlation between the index value and the average daily number of active fires (according to index gradations) within spring and summer-autumn periods of a fire season. Weight of every point was teken into account. None of the methods tested showed the superior overall performance. A new method of local scales elaborated in V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk was used.

Height increments and suevival of Pinus sylvestris climatypes in provenance trials in the western Trans- Baikal region
: материалы временных коллективов / T. N. Novikova // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 11-2. - С. 73-79. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Scots pine provenance trials established in Buryatia (western Trans-Baikal region) in Siberia were studied. The features of linear increment of 57 progeniers representing a significant part of the total Scots pine area in Russia are shown. Interpopulation variability in Scots pine progenies' linear increment index was found to increase in provenances during optimal moisture conditions during growing seasons. The correlation coefficients, between the linear incremewnt idexes and the climatype survival rate, showed a mostly positive link based on the contrast in conditions of the originating material populations.

Climatic and geographic patterns of spatial distribution of precipitation in Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / A. A. Onuchin, T. A. Burenina // Environmental change in Siberia: earth observation, field studies and modelling. - Dordrecht et. al. : Springer, 2010. - С. 193-210. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Climatic and geographic patterns of the spatial precipitation distribution in Central Siberia are studied on a regional level. Computer models of spatiall precipitation distribution were developed for the Yenisei Mountain Chain, Eastern Sayan, and the South-eastern Trans-Baikal region. Owing to irregular spatial distribution of precipitaion three groups of landscapes were defined: (1) slopes of west, north-west aspect with orographic precipitation; (2) shadow slopes in mountain regions; (3) plain landscapes. Obtained equautions show correlations between the amount of precipitation and altitude, geographical latitude, distance from barrier ridge and other parameters.

Аннотация: The Trans-Baikal (or Zabailkal'e) region includes the forest-steppe ecotones south and east of Lake Baikal in Russia and has experienced drought for several years. The decline and mortality of birch (Betula pendula) stands within the forest-steppe ecotone Trans-Baikal region was studied based on a temporal series of satellite data, ground measurements, and tree ring analysis. During the first decade of the 21st century birch stands decline and mortality were observed on about 5% of the total area of stands within our 1250 km(2) study area. Birch forest decline and mortality occurs mainly at the margins of stands, within the forest-steppe ecotone on slopes with direct insolation. During the first decade of the 21st century summer (June-August) precipitation was about 25% below normal. Soil water content measurements were lowest within dead stands and highest within healthy stands and intermediate within damaged stands. Drought impact on stands was amplified by an increase in summer air temperatures (+0.9 degrees C) in comparison with the previous decade. Tree ring data of "surviving" and "dead" tree groups showed a positive correlation with summer/annual precipitation and negative correlation with summer air temperatures. Temperature and precipitation extreme anomalies tend to occur in the region with a period of about 27 years. The observed anomaly was the most severe since the beginning of meteorological observations in the year 1900. Data for the other sites showed a positive climate impact on the growth and expansion of Siberian forests. That is, the same species (B. pendula) showed considerable increase (1.4 times both in height and stem volume) during 20th-21st centuries as temperature increased but precipitation remained at adequate levels. phytomass -- stand -- grass bush layer -- easily mineralizable and stable organic soil matter -- fire intensity

Аннотация: A change in the mass and composition of organic matter in the phytomass and soil of pine forests affected by mid-intensity and high-intensity fires is considered. It is shown that a mid-intensity fire did not catastrophically affect the pool of carbon in the middle-aged pine forests of the subtaiga forest-steppe and the taiga higher belt areas in the southwest of the Baikal region. Five years after a high-intensity fire, the carbon reserves in a mature taiga pine forest remain 20% lower than in an unaffected pine forest. Compared with the reference figures, the mass of C and soil cover in the stand phytomass decreased by 18 and 63%, respectively. In the easily mineralizable fraction of organic matter, the reserves of carbon decreased by half owing to burnout of waste wood (by 64%) and root detritus (by 50% compared with the reference tree stand figures).

Аннотация: The results of experimental investigations of the postpyrogenic dynamics of the widespread rawhumus podzols under Pinus sibirica forests in the southern Lake Baikal basin are discussed. Ground fires transform the diagnostic surface organic soil horizons into organic pyrogenic horizons (Opir, OL/Opir, and AOpir). The adverse effect of ground fires of different intensities on the changes in the reserves, the fractional composition of the litters, and the chemical composition of the organic horizons is shown. The soils of dark coniferous forests are inclined to long-lasting restoration. The Pinus sibirica regrowth under the canopy of deciduous species serves as the basis for the restoration of native stands and the formation of the soils characteristic of the southern part of the Lake Baikal basin.

Аннотация: Experimental data on the effect of surface fires on the organic matter transformation in the gray-humus soils of pine forests were obtained in the southwestern part of the Baikal region. The application of methods of thermal analysis (such as differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry) made it possible to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the decomposition (oxidation) of the components of the soil organic matter upon their heating. It was found that the organic matter content in the soils subjected to fires of high intensity decreased by 1.9 times in comparison with the control. In the litter horizons of the undisturbed soils, thermolabile components (mostly, oligo- and polysaccharides) comprised 61% of the organic matter, and the portion of thermostable components (aromatic compounds) was 39%. A significant decrease in the content of thermolabile components and an increase in the content of thermostable components (up to 62%) were observed in the organic matter of the postpyrogenic forest litter as a result of the charcoal formation during the fire.

SOIL

Аннотация: The dynamics of organic matter accumulated in the soil and main vegetation elements was analyzed for post-logging forest ecosystem succession series in eastern Baikal region. The phytomass was found to allocate up 63 and 50% of carbon in undisturbed Scots pine and fir stands, respectively. The post-logging phytomass contribution to the total carbon pool appeared to decrease down to 16% in Scots pine and 6% in fir stands. In Scots pine stands, carbon storage was determined to account for almost 70% of the initial carbon 60 years after logging. In 50- to 55-year-old fir stands, carbon recovered its initial pool only by 10%. Soil carbon recorded in recently logged Scots pine and fir sites appeared to be 5 and 16 times that accumulated in the phytomass, respectively. The ratio between phytomass carbon and soil organic matter recovered back to the prelogging level in Scots pine stands by the age of 50-60 years. While phytomass carbon also increased in fir stand of the same age, it did not reach the level of the control stand.

Аннотация: The southern coast of Baikal is characterized by the most humid climate in the Baikal region. Precipitation falls mainly on summer, thus reducing the actual of fire occurrence in mountain forests of the region. However, since 1989 the fire occurrence has been increased and disastrous crown fires have become more frequent, especially in the west. It is shown that fire occurrence is a function of the number, duration of rainless periods and monthly sums of rain precipitation, which have large amplitude of changes from year to year. Progressive pyrogenic successions in dark coniferous forests take place mostly without usual replacement by small-leaved tree species at the expense of successful regeneration of Pinus sibirica (in the western Khamar-Daban mountains) and Abies sibirica (in the central part) on the burnt areas during 15-25 years.

Аннотация: Structure of crown and viability of generative organs of Siberian fir were studied in disturbed forest ecosystems near Baikal Lake. The crown structure changes in damaged trees: a zone of subapical drying appears and apical dominance is lost. Needle chlorosis and necrosis appear and proceed in sprouts of male sexualization. The tree top including the female generative organs does not show degradation symptoms during about 30 years and produces seed cones. Processes of degradation in male generative zone greatly influence on fir tree pollen. Pollen viability of fir trees varied from year to year in different trees but always pollen quality of trees growing in the Khamar-Daban Mts in the air pollution zone was more poor in comparison with the pollen of trees at die Baikal Lake shore. Tree pollen growing in the Khamar-Daban Mts germinates in vitro but pollen tubes are formed short and not viable. Seed quality of fir trees is very low, A lot of seeds are sterile. Empty seeds prevail. The formation of empty seeds was caused by the low pollen germination in ovules and as a whole absence of pollen in ovules. The high sterility of generative organs and especially of Abies sibirica pollen can limit gametic selection and decrease fir diversity in forest ecosystems near Baikal Lake.

Аннотация: The number and the biomass of microorganisms were determined in the soils of the floodplain and islands in the Selenga River delta. The population of fungi in the soils studied was low. The number of saprotrophic prokaryote microorganisms varied from 10(6)-10(8) CFU/g of soil in the upper horizons to 10(4)-10(5) CFU/g in the lower horizons of the soils. This pattern is typical for most zonal soils. The microbial biomass in the floodplain soils was 2-4 times as high as that in the soils of the islands. The number of microorganisms of different ecologic-trophic groups participating in the nitrogen and carbon mobilization was much lower than that in the hydromorphic soils of the Transbaikal region or in the cryogenic soils of the Angara River basin (Irkutsk district). The low coefficient of microbiological mineralization and the low coefficient showing the lack of nitrogen (coefficient of oligotrophness) in the soils indicated the weak processes of organic matter decomposition in the soils studied. During the season investigated (August-September), the bacterial complexes in all the soils were dominated by bacteria of the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Aquaspirillum. In the floodplain soils, streptomycetes constituted a considerable part of the microbial complexes of the floodplain soils, whereas, in the soils of the islands, their number was minor.

Аннотация: The data of experimental studies on the after-fire digression of subtaiga forest-steppe pine forests in the Southwestern Baikal Region are analyzed. Ground fires of the litter-humus type are ascertained to be the most destructive factor in the dynamics of pine forests. The effect of a ground fire is accompanied with the drying of trees, and the vital capacity of those that survived the fire depends on the severity of fire damages. The characteristic of the lower vegetation layers and its dynamics under the effect of moderately intense fires are presented. Ground fires are shown to negatively affect the change in the reserve qualitative fractional structure of organogenic soil layers and their chemical composition.

Аннотация: Different methods have been developed for measuring carbon stocks and fluxes in the northern high latitudes, ranging from intensively measured small plots to space-based methods that use reflectance data to drive production efficiency models. The field of dendroecology has used samples of tree growth from radial increments to quantify long-term variability in ecosystem productivity, but these have very limited spatial domains. Since the cambium material in tree cores is itself a product of photosynthesis in the canopy, it would be ideal to link these two approaches. We examine the associations between the normalized differenced vegetation index (NDVI) and tree growth using 19 pairs of tree-ring widths (TRW) and maximum latewood density (MXD) across much of Siberia. We find consistent correlations between NDVI and both measures of tree growth and no systematic difference between MXD and TRW. At the regional level we note strong correspondence between the first principal component of tree growth and NDVI for MXD and TRW in a temperature-limited bioregion, indicating that canopy reflectance and cambial production are broadly linked. Using a network of 21 TRW chronologies from south of Lake Baikal, we find a similarly strong regional correspondence with NDVI in a markedly drier region. We show that tree growth is dominated by variation at decadal and multidecadal time periods, which the satellite record is incapable of recording given its relatively short record.

Аннотация: An analysis is made of the data from experimental investigations into the influence of fires on changes in the soil-protective functions of Siberian stone pine and pine forests in the southern part of the central ecological zone of the Baikal natural territory. The study revealed a negative influence of ground fires of the litter-humus type on changes in reserves and qualitative functional composition of forest litter and its moisture retention capacity as well as in water-physical properties of soils. Quantitative indices are provided for the liquid and solid overland runoff forming in burnt-over areas, depending on slope steepness, and on the intensity and temporal remoteness of past fires. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
