Аннотация: This proceedings includes 28 papers, which are grouped in 6 chaperts: greenhouse gas emissions, carbon and nitrogen dynamics, forest disturbance and management, microbiological functions, geocryological information. Although the knowledge and information presented here are still inadequate to understand the environmental change in Siberian permafrost region, we hiope that the proceeding will be an initiation of exploring new horizons in the Siberian research.

Аннотация: The results of this study thus provides evidence that the BC stocks are strongly related to the OC stocks in general and to the environmental variables that control the OC stocks. A similar result was obtained by Glaser and Amelung for BC in North American native grassland soils. They concluded that the BC storage in soils is controlled by higher BC productiion at sites with high plant biomass and by shorter BC residence time in soils showing favourable conditions for OC decomposition. The data also show that if permafrost degradation is taking place by some kind of disturbance, in particular the bogs will loose BC to a large extent. It is proportionally even more pronounced than for OC in general. Hence, BC in permafrost soils is highly susceptible to permafrost thawing and cannot be considered as a refractory carbon species in such ecosystem. Also it is discussed another questions.

    The structure and biodiversity after fire disturbance

Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

    Post-fire forest disturbance evaluation using ENVISAT-MERIS data

Аннотация: Envisat-MERIS and SPOT Vegetation satelitte data were tested for estimation of vegetation cover disturbance caused by fire and industrial pollution in central and northern Siberia test sites, respectively. MERIS data were used to assess forest disturbance levels on burned sites in Angara region. Chlorophyll indexes (REP and MTCI) were found to allow identifying up to five forest disturbance levels due to high space-borne sensor resolution and sensitivity to chlorophyll content of vegetation. The current vegetation condition was assessed using MTCI index in the northern (Norilsk) test region. The lowest index values calculated for the most severely disturbed vegetation near Norilsk were found to correlate with sulphur concentrations in larch and spruce needles. Another approach to estimating spatial and temporal trends of vegetation condition used the 1998-2005 SPOT-Vegetation satellite data. The relationships obtained between MTCI, NDVI values, and forest mortality were based upon to map the 1998-2005 forest degradation zone dynamics in the northern test site.

Аннотация: Wildfire is the dominant natural disturbance in boreeal regions, which act as a catalyst for regulating successional processes under the control of weather and climate. Large-scale reanalysis and ground-station interpolated meteorological data are used to estimate local- and regional-scale fire weather for a normal and an extreme fire year. The ability of large-scale weather data to estimate fire weather provides confidence in the relevance of large-scale data to be used to enhance fire weather prediction in remote regions where station data are sparse and also its potential use in estimating large-scale future fire danger.

Аннотация: Microbial community and population amounts, as well as functional activity, can be concluded to indicate level of human-caused forest ecosystem disturbance at early stage of anthropogenesis. This study identified mocroorganisms useful for bioremediation of disturbed components of forest ecosystems differing in disturbance level. Application of biologically active agents (bacteria and microscopic fungi) was shown to be useful for restoring and improving soil conditions during bioremediation (sanation).

Аннотация: Annual dissolved organic (DOC) and inorganic (DIC) carbon concentrations and fluxes in rivers were obtained for 5 large-scale watersheds (15,000-174,000 km2) within Central Siberian Plateau (Yenisey River basin). There are two contamporary limitations of terrigenic C export across Siberia: (1) mobilization of available pools of C is constrained by low precipitation in severe climate of interior Siberia, and (2) low productivity of ecosystems, show weathering rates and/or wildfire disturbance lessen the mobilezeable pools of organic and inorganic C.

Аннотация: Boreal forests constitute the world's largest terrestrial carbon pools. The main natural disturbance in these forests is wildfire, which modifies the carbon budget and atmosphere, directly and indirectly. Wildfire emissions in Russia contribute substantially to the global carbon cycle and have potentially important feedbacks to changing climate. Published estimates of carbon emissions from fires in Russian boreal forests vary greatly depending on the methods and data sets used. We examined various fire and vegetation products used to estimate wildfire emissions for Siberia. Large (up to fivefold) differences in annual and monthly area burned estimates for Siberia were found among four satellite-based fire data sets. Official Russian data were typically less than 10% of satellite estimates. Differences in the estimated proportion of annual burned area within each ecosystem were as much as 40% among five land-cover products. As a result, fuel consumption estimates would be expected to vary widely (3%-98%) depending on the specific vegetation mapping product used and as a function of weather conditions. Verification and validation of burned area and land-cover data sets along with the development of fuel maps and combustion models are essential for accurate Siberian wildfire emission estimates, which are central to balancing the carbon budget and assessing feedbacks to climate change.

Аннотация: An automated information system making it possible to estimate spatial distribution of soil organic carbon pool with a high spatial resolution (1 km(2)) has been developed. According to the obtained estimates, the total pool of organic carbon in the 1-m-deep soil layer on the territory of Russia reaches 317.1 Pg; the average organic carbon density in this layer for the entire Russia constitutes 19.2 kg C/m(2). Of this amount, 14.4 Pg (or 0.90 kg C/m(2)) is stored in the litter horizon. The developed algorithm allows us to refine the results with the acquisition of new data on soils, vegetation, and the degree of their disturbance, which is particularly important in the changing world.

Аннотация: Background: Anthropogenic disturbance of old-growth tropical forests increases the abundance of early successional tree species at the cost of late successional ones. Quantifying differences in terms of carbon allocation and the proportion of recently fixed carbon in soil CO2 efflux is crucial for addressing the carbon footprint of creeping degradation. Methodology: We compared the carbon allocation pattern of the late successional gymnosperm Podocarpus falcatus (Thunb.) Mirb. and the early successional (gap filling) angiosperm Croton macrostachyus Hochst. es Del. in an Ethiopian Afromontane forest by whole tree (CO2)-C-13 pulse labeling. Over a one-year period we monitored the temporal resolution of the label in the foliage, the phloem sap, the arbuscular mycorrhiza, and in soil-derived CO2. Further, we quantified the overall losses of assimilated C-13 with soil CO2 efflux. Principal Findings: C-13 in leaves of C. macrostachyus declined more rapidly with a larger size of a fast pool (64% vs. 50% of the assimilated carbon), having a shorter mean residence time (14 h vs. 55 h) as in leaves of P. falcatus. Phloem sap velocity was about 4 times higher for C. macrostachyus. Likewise, the label appeared earlier in the arbuscular mycorrhiza of C. macrostachyus and in the soil CO2 efflux as in case of P. falcatus (24 h vs. 72 h). Within one year soil CO2 efflux amounted to a loss of 32% of assimilated carbon for the gap filling tree and to 15% for the late successional one. Conclusions: Our results showed clear differences in carbon allocation patterns between tree species, although we caution that this experiment was unreplicated. A shift in tree species composition of tropical montane forests (e. g., by degradation) accelerates carbon allocation belowground and increases respiratory carbon losses by the autotrophic community. If ongoing disturbance keeps early successional species in dominance, the larger allocation to fast cycling compartments may deplete soil organic carbon in the long run.

To understand carbon budget recovery trends following logging, carbon stock and fluxes were measured in stands differing in time since logging. In both Scots pine and fir stands disturbed by logging, the tree phytomass contribution to the carbon budget decreased drastically, whereas the coarse woody debris (CWD) carbon pool exhibited a marked increase. Sixty years following logging, the Scots pine stand carbon storage was almost 70 % of that prior to logging and the ratio between the phytomass and soil organic matter was the same as before the disturbance. While the phytomass carbon showed a similar trend in the fir stand of the same age, it was less than on the control stand. In a 50-55-year-old fir stand, 26 years since harvesting, the phytomass carbon recovered only by 15 %. Siberian fir and Scots pine logging sites differed in CWD loading and decomposition rate. The phytomass dynamics and CWD loading values obtained suggest that Scots pine stands which have experienced logging are most likely carbon sinks, as was clear from the phytomass production exceeding organic matter decomposition-caused fluxes. Conversely, logged fir ecosystems are likely to be sources of carbon to the atmosphere due to a large CWD loading, faster rate of its decomposition, and slow phytomass increment.

Аннотация: The cytogenetic study of Abies sibirica seed progenies in declining fir stands of West Sayan High Mountains has been carried out. The increased amount of chromosome and genome mutations, pathologies of mitotic cycle and cells with micronuclei were found at studying. The revealed irregularities may be the result of a long-term exposure to extreme environmental factors and probably reflect the high degree of disturbance of the ecosystem in this region.

Аннотация: Frequent measurements of dissolved organic (DOC) and inorganic (DIC) carbon concentrations in rivers during snowmelt, the entire ice-free season, and winter were made in five large watersheds (15 000-174 000 km(2)) of the Central Siberian Plateau (Yenisey River basin). These differ in the degree of continuous permafrost coverage, mean annual air temperature, and the proportion of tundra and forest vegetation. With an annual DOC export from the catchment areas of 2.8-4.7 gC m(-2) as compared to an annual DIC export of 1.0-2.8 gC m(-2), DOC was the dominant component of terrigenous C released to rivers. There was strong temporal variation in the discharge of DOC and DIC. Like for other rivers of the pan-arctic and boreal zones, snowmelt dominated annual fluxes, being 55-71% for water runoff, 64-82% for DOC and 37-41% for DIC. Likewise, DOC and DIC exhibited also a strong spatial variation in C fluxes, with both dissolved C species decreasing from south to north. The rivers of the southern part of the plateau had the largest flow-weighted DOC concentrations among those previously reported for Siberian rivers, but the smallest flow-weighted DIC concentrations. In the study area, DOC and DIC fluxes were negatively correlated with the distribution of continuous permafrost and positively correlated with mean annual air temperature. A synthesis of literature data shows similar trends from west to east, with an eastward decrease of dissolved C concentrations and an increased proportion of DOC in the total dissolved C flux. It appears that there are two contemporary limitations for river export of terrigenous C across Siberia: (1) low productivity of ecosystems with respect to potentially mobilizable organic C, slow weathering rates with concomitant small formation of bicarbonate, and/or wildfire disturbance limit the pools of organic and inorganic C that can be mobilized for transport in rivers (source-limited), and (2) mobilization of available pools of C is constrained by low precipitation in the severe continental climate of interior Siberia (transport-limited). Climate warming may reduce the source limitation by enhancing primary production and weathering rates, while causes leading to surmounting the transport limitation remain debatable due to uncertainties in predictions of precipitation trends and other likely sources of reported increase of river discharges.

Аннотация: Ophiostomatoid fungi colonize the conducting tissues of conifer stems, the phloem and the xylem. These pathogenic fungi penetrate into the stem through injuries made by xylophagous insects vectoring these pathogens. In this study the response of the phloem of Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) to wounding (treatment 1) was compared with the response to wounding combined with application of high-molecular-weight compounds isolated from the mycelium of the ophiostomatoid fungus Ceratocystis laricicola Redfern & Minter (treatment 2). Both treatments induced the appearance of necrosis in the inner bark, the formation of periderm separating living and dead tissues, and formation of the callus alongside the wound perimeter. In addition, the bark accumulated lignin, bound proanthocyanidins, and resins, with a parallel decrease in the content of free proanthocyanidins, low-molecular-weight carbohydrates, and non-lignin components of the cell wall (P > 0.95). The size of necrotic spots, as well as changes in the content of most substances, were significantly higher in the treatment 2 than in the treatment 1 (P > 0.95). The accumulation of lignin in cell walls of phloem sieve cells was delayed in the treatment 2 as compared with that in the treatment 1. This suggested that the mycelial extract temporarily inhibited lignification at the early stage of the wound response. This disturbance of the cell wall protective transformation led to the hypothesis that the fungal suppressors retard the repair of inner bark injured by insects, thereby favoring the invasion of conifer tissues by ophiostomatoid fungi.
