The conservation and quality of Gmelin larch seeds in cryolithic zone of Central Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / A. P. Abaimov [и др.] // Proceedings of the eighth symposium on the joint Siberian permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1999. - Onogawa : National Institute for Environmental Studies, 2000. - С. 3-9. - рус. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The obtained experimental data testify that even in the case of stands mortality as a result of ground fires it is right to count on quite successful natural regeneration of Gmelin larch on burned areas. It is right to consider genetically conditioned ability of Larix gmelini to conserve a part of quality seeds in ripe cones for 3-4 years as an adaptive reaction of the species to periodical wildfire impacts which are the main destabilizing factor in high latitudes of real zone in Eurasia.

Ecology of wildland fires and permafrost: their interdependence in the Northern part of Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / M. A. Sofronov, A. V. Volokitina, T. Kajimoto // Proceedings of the eighth symposium on the joint Siberian permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1999. - Onogawa : National Institute for Environmental Studies, 2000. - С. 211-218. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: In the northern part of Siberia permafrost has a great indirect influence on wildland fires by means of a peculiar hydrological rezime of the territory and the character of vegetation floor. Favourable conditions are created for fire spread over vast territories (with the exception of mountainous regions).

Infrared characterization of fine-scale variability in behavior of boreal forest fires
: материалы временных коллективов / D. J. McRae [и др.] // Canadian Journal of Forest Research. - 2005. - Vol. 35, : 9. - С. 2194-2206

Аннотация: Spatial and temporal variability in forest fire behavior, caused by differences in microsites, fuel types and condition, topography, and other factors across even relatively small areas, has been poorly characterized in most previous studies. We report documentation and analysis of fire behavior for several experimental fires using a camcorder-sized infrared camera mounted in a helicopter hovering over the target fires. These fires were conducted as part of the Russian FIRE BEAR Project in boreal Pinus sylvestris L. forests of central Siberia. Final results provide quantitative information on fire front location, rates of speed, temperatures, and total radiation energy (kW/m2) observed during the fires at resolutions from 2.5 to 1.0 m across experimental burn plots ranging from 2.3 to 4.0 ha. This method allows the sample size to be quite large, so that statistical analysis of the fire behavior data can provide an associated level of confodence.

Particulate emissions from fires in central Siberian Scots pine forests
: материалы временных коллективов / Yu. N. Samsonov [и др.] // Canadian Journal of Forest Research. - 2005. - Vol. 35, : 9. - С. 2207-2217

Аннотация: Siberian boreal forest fires burn large areas annually, resulting in smoke that release large amounts of particulate emission into the atmospere. We sampled aerosol emissions from experimental fires of three Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forest sites of central Siberia. Emissions from ground-based aerosol samples were 0.1-0.7 t/ha. This value represented 1%- 7% of the total biomass (10-30 t/ha) consumed during the experimental fires. We were able classify the chemical composition of 77%-90% of the mass of particulate the emissions. Chemical analysis indicated that an average of 8%-17% of the particulate composition was of mineral emission.

The structure and biodiversity after fire disturbance
: материалы временных коллективов / O. A. Zyryanova, V. I. Zyryanov et al // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 19-29. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

Regeneration after forest fires in mixed conifer broad-leaved forests of the Amur region in Far Eastern Russia: the relationship between species specific traits against fire and recent fire regimes
: материалы временных коллективов / M. Kobayashi, Y. P. Nemilostiv, O. A. Zyryanova et al // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 51-58. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The number of forest fires has been increasing in the mixed conifer broad-leaved forests in the southern part of Far Eastern Russia. We should analyze the effect of this new fire regime on the vegetation and carbon budget in the forest ecosystem of this region. As each woody species develops specific traits to adapt to certain fire regimes, a change of fire regime affects each species differently. This can result in the alteration of the species composition of forest ecosystems. In the present study, we rewieded those adaptive traits exhibited by species in the region, and hypothesized a possible mechsnism for the changes of species composition and amount of biomass stock that would result from the new fire regime. The new fire regime described were an increased frequency of both intense canopy fires and low intensity surface fires. Both kinds of increased fire result in an increase of Betula platyphylla forests, but with different mechanisms. We proposed that an increase of Betula platyphylla forests due to either mechanism results in a decrease of biomass density.

Performance of various methods of fire weather danger rating in the South Lake Baikal forests
: abstract / T. M. Sofronova // Enviromis. International conference on environmental observations, modelling and information systems, Tomsk, Russia, July 1-8, 2006: program and abstracts. - 2006. - С. 97

Аннотация: We tested Russian indices: Nesterov index (PN, 1968), Leningrad Research Institute index PV-1, 1975), Krasnoyarsk Forest Institute index (PVG, 1990) as well as Canadian index (FWI,1987) - in the South Lake Baikal area on the territory of the Sludyanka Forest Office (351 thousand ha). The performance criterion was the correlation between the index value and the average daily number of active fires (according to index gradations) within spring and summer-autumn periods of a fire season. Weight of every point was teken into account. None of the methods tested showed the superior overall performance. A new method of local scales elaborated in V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk was used.

Wystepowanie pozarow lasu w Syberii Srodkowej w zalesznosci od geograficznej i ocena uszkodzenia lasow
= Geographic conditionality of wildfires and estimition of damages of forests of Central Siberia : материалы временных коллективов / E. I. Ponomarev // Lesne Prace Badawcze (Forest Research Papers). - Vol. 69, № 2. - С. 109-115

Аннотация: This database of forest wildfires that occurred in Central Siberia in the years 2006 and 2007 was created on the basis of satellite image analysis. The database allowed to construct an up-to-date map of fire hazards and depict the geographic distribution of forest and non-forest fires during fire season. The duration of the active burning phase for the majority (88%) of forests in the region was 1 day. The spatial-temporal distribution of forest fires indicates a maximum fire risk at the end of June and the begining of July and in southern regions - also in spring and autumn. The analysis of images with depicting damage to forestland allows to state that c.30-40% are the stands with different stands with different degree of damage of which less than c. 30% show weak signs of recovery.

Аннотация: The increasing of burning area in Siberia, the extension of fire season and fires intensity lead to significant carbon emission. One of the important tasks is to describe the spread of smoke aerosol and other combustion products using actual meteorological data and fire state information. A smoke aerosol covers territory hundreds times larger than the burning area and has an effect on forming the cloud and sediment formation exactly above the fire zone.

Аннотация: The influence of ground fires varying intensity on ground vegetation has been studied in pine forests of middle taiga in Central Siberia. These fires lead to reduction of a percent cover and biomass of the ground vegetation regardless of their intensity. Mosses and lichens are killed. Post-fire recovery of the ground vegetatiion is determined by the fire intensity, litter burning depth and initial forest type.

Аннотация: We defined catastrophic fire as a single high-severity fire that covers more than 10,000 ha and results in total consumption of litter, and humus layers and high tree mortality, or the simultaneous occurrence of several high-severity fires in a given region with a total area exceeding 10,000 km2. Fires on this scale can cause substantial economic, social and environmental effects, with regional to global impacts.
