Аннотация: The use of fire as a key ecosystem driver in many disturbance shaped landscapes of Eurasian has modified ecosystems into significant cultural landscapes. In these ecosystems, people over time have played a significant role in creating, maintaining, expanding or changing the landscape components that now have high conservation value.

Аннотация: The problems of valuation of forest resources in Kyrgystan are shortly discussed. The woodlands which possess sorces of row materials of social and economic priority are maintained by local populations under the conditions of traditional forest utilization/ The prevalence of exploitatioin of side, not wood resources is the special feature of forestry in Kyrgystan. The suggestion is that the elaboration of special criteria for estimation of forest typological variation is urgenly required.

Аннотация: The analysis of soil-climatic relationships was performed on the basis of the BIOME database on climate and vegetation created by the V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forestry (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and the Soil Map of the Russian Federation (1: 2.5 M scale) for the southern part of the boreal zone of Siberia. Climatic parameters (accumulated daily temperatures above 10A degrees C, continentality of the climate, and humidity of the climate) specifying the development of major types of mesomorphic soils on this territory were determined. The climatic contacts between different soil groups were established. The soil diversity in climatic ecotones was characterized. The criteria of steady and unsteady position of soils in the space of climatic coordinates were analyzed, and the measure of the climatic sensitivity of soils was suggested.

Uses of tree saps in northern and eastern parts of Europe
/ I. . Svanberg [et al.] // Acta Soc. Bot. Pol. - 2012. - Vol. 81, Is. 4. - P343-357, DOI 10.5586/asbp.2012.036. - Cited References: 176 . - 15. - ISSN 0001-6977

Аннотация: In this article we review the use of tree saps in northern and eastern Europe. Published accounts by travellers, ethnologists and ethnobotanists were searched for historical and contemporary details. Field observations made by the authors have also been used. The presented data shows that the use of tree sap has occurred in most north and eastern European countries. It can be assumed that tree saps were most used where there were extensive stands of birch or maple trees, as these two genera generally produce the largest amount of sap. The taxa most commonly used have been Betula pendula, B. pubescens, and Acer platanoides, but scattered data on the use of several other taxa are presented. Tree sap was used as a fresh drink, but also as an ingredient in food and beverages. It was also fermented to make light alcoholic products like ale and wine. Other folk uses of tree saps vary from supplementary nutrition in the form of sugar, minerals and vitamins, to cosmetic applications for skin and hair and folk medicinal use. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the only countries where the gathering and use of sap (mainly birch sap) has remained an important activity until recently, due to the existence of large birch forests, low population density and the incorporation of sap into the former Soviet economic system. It is evident that gathering sap from birch and other trees was more widespread in earlier times. There are records indicating extensive use of tree saps from Scandinavia, Poland, Slovakia and Romania, but it is primarily of a historical character. The extraction of tree sap in these countries is nowadays viewed as a curiosity carried out only by a few individuals. However, tree saps have been regaining popularity in urban settings through niche trading.

Аннотация: The paper studies the introgressive hybridization between the Gmelin's larch and Cajander larch. The obtained data confirm the indisputable specific independence of the Cajander larch, which occupies about 48% of the total area of the larch forests in Russia. Its specific independence has been doubted by some experts. Once again more reliable and vast material shows the presence of wide transitional belt of hybrid populations at the juncture of the hybridizing species. Some forestry characteristics of the Gmelin's larch and Cajanderi larch are studied that play important role in their natural restoration.

FIRE HISTORY

Аннотация: Methodological aspects of investigation into the dynamics of pyrological regimes and their effect on natural ecosystems have been considered. It seems reasonable to combine different data on the history of forest fires in order to reveal the long-term dynamics of pyrological regimes. This allows one to eliminate certain disadvantages that are to some extent peculiar to separate methods. The dynamics of pyrological regimes at the main landscape stows in southern taiga of Siberian regions near the Yenisei over the last three centuries has been analyzed. The deviations of modem pyrological regimes from those in the past are quantitatively estimated. Probable ecological and forestry consequences of changes in pyrological regimes and possible ways to govern the pyrogenic factor for the purpose of stabilizing ecosystems are discussed.

CLIMATE-CHANGE

Аннотация: The vastness or scale of the Siberian forest presents both an opportunity and a challenge. It is a major source of softwood fiber in a world in which softwood fiber is in great demand. Its vastness and isolation from markets make it more difficult to regulate harvesting and to get both raw material and processed wood to consumers. Both natural and anthropogenic disturbances (e.g., fire, climate change) greatly alter forest landscapes and complicate the management of the resource for sustainability. We characterize the current condition of the Siberian forest in Russia and recommend future directions for this globally-important resource. The future is promising because Siberia has a relatively well-developed forest infrastructure, along with highly-trained scientists, an existing structure of forest enterprises, and some protective and regulatory measures that serve as a basis for developing and sustaining the resource. However, investments directed at modernization, especially technological, are needed to enhance the country's capacity to promote sustainable development in the forestry sector.

Аннотация: In 1997, several project teams of the NASA Land-Cover Land-Use Change Program began working with Russian organizations to try to quantify and understand the past, present, and future land-cover and land-use trends in Russian boreal forests. Selected results of completed and ongoing research projects are discussed in four categories: forest dynamics, fire and fire behavior, carbon budgets, and new remote sensing analysis methods. This research has helped pave the way for collaborations with international organizations and other networks, and collaborations at several scales are now making it possible for Russian and US scientists to work together to further our knowledge on the influence of land-cover and land-use change throughout the world.
