It was examined the effects of temporal and spatial variations in soil temperature and moisture on DOC fluxes from the forest floor contrasting north- and south-facing slopes in central Siberia.

Аннотация: The CO2 flux was positively correlated with soil temperature and negatively correlated with soil moisture. The CO2 flux was lowest in the Aulacomnium patch among the patches because of the low soil temperature and high soil moisture. The CO2 emission and CH4 uptake were smaller the previously reported values. The C/N ratio in soil might be an important factor explaining the low CO2 emission, and the low CH4 production may be related to the microtopography at the site.

Аннотация: Research to monitor and document surface fire behavior characteristics in Scots pine forests of Central Siberia. Fifteen successful burns were conducted under a range of burning conditions (2000-2003). Fuel consumption, depth of burn, rate of spread, and fire line intensity were successfully modelled using the Russian Moisture Index (PV-1) or the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System as the independent variables, which should prove useful in suppression efforts undertaken by Russian fire agencies.

Аннотация: Scots pine provenance trials established in Buryatia (western Trans-Baikal region) in Siberia were studied. The features of linear increment of 57 progeniers representing a significant part of the total Scots pine area in Russia are shown. Interpopulation variability in Scots pine progenies' linear increment index was found to increase in provenances during optimal moisture conditions during growing seasons. The correlation coefficients, between the linear incremewnt idexes and the climatype survival rate, showed a mostly positive link based on the contrast in conditions of the originating material populations.

Аннотация: Soil and water protection functions of boreal forests in West Sayan and Northern Priangarye are greatly effected by forest industry, firstly, timber cutting. After concentrated timber felling all ecological forest functions are changing. On the base of long time forest and hydrology investigations on cuts and in secondary forest an estimation of water balance was made taking into account forest structure change during regeneration succsssion. Obtained data showed soil erosion rate depending on soil properties, topography, and moisture conditions, the latter determining surface runoff development.

Аннотация: An emperical fire study, using 2 to 4-ha experimental burn plots, was conducted in Central Siberia to obtain data to develop fire behaviour models for Scots pine forests. Fuel consumptiuon (depth of burn and fuel consumption) was predicted using the Russian Moisture Index (PV-1) or the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI) System. However, only the FWI System could be used to model fire behaviour characteristics (rate of spread and fireline intensity), as wind speed is an important input factor in its calculatiion and is not accounted for in the PV-1.

Аннотация: The drying of samples of mountain-meadow soils characterized by their permanently high moisture under natural conditions fundamentally changes the concentrations of the labile nitrogen and carbon compounds, as well as the patterns of their microbial transformation. When the soil samples are dried, a four- to fivefold increase in the content of the extractable organic nitrogen compounds, carbon compounds, and inorganic nitrogen compounds is observed, while the content of nitrogen and carbon of the microbial biomass decreases by two-three times. The rewetting of the dried soil launches the process of the replenishment of the nitrogen and carbon reserves in the microbial biomass. However, even after two weeks of incubation, their values were 1.5-2 times lower than the initial values typical of the natural soil. The restoration of the microbial community in the samples of the previously dried soils occurs in the absence of a deficiency of labile organic compounds and is accompanied by their active mineralization and the low uptake of ammonium nitrogen by the microorganisms.

Аннотация: Pyrogenic transformations of the physical state of cryogenic soils in the southern and middle taiga were investigated. The long-term dynamics of the microclimate on burns and the soil temperature and moisture to the depth of 120 cm were studied. Data on the postfire restoration of the ground cover are presented. Experiments on artificial sprinkling of burned areas differing in the degree of the burning out of the forest litter, the slope gradient, etc., have been performed. An experimental model demonstrating the relationships between the surface runoff and five environmental factors has been proposed. The pyrogenic destruction of the ground cover and the lower phytocenosis layers was accompanied by significant disturbances of the microclimate and anomalous thawing of the permafrost on the burns. In the pine stand on the colluvial fan after the intense fire, the soil temperature at the depth of 10 cm ( in the summer) exceeded the control value by 3-5 degrees C; in the larch forest on the southern slope of the Stanovoi Ridge, it increased by 1.5-2.0 times after the fire of medium intensity. On the mountain slopes, the surface runoff was significantly intensified, which resulted in drastic environmental and silvicultural consequences.

Аннотация: Regional studies have shown that winters warmed 2-3 degrees C while summers warmed 1-2 degrees C during the1960-2010 period in central Siberia. Increased warming predicted from general circulation models (GCMs) by the end of the century is expected to impact Siberian vegetation. Our goal is to evaluate the consequences of climate warming on vegetation, forests, and forest-forming tree species in central Siberia. We use our envelope-type bioclimatic models of the Siberian forests and major tree conifer species based on three climatic indices which characterise their warmth and moisture requirements and cold resistance, and on one soil factor that charactrises their tolerance to permafrost. Coupling our bioclimatic models with the climatic indices and the permafrost distributions, we predict the potential habitats of forests and forest-forming tree species in current climate conditions and also in the 2080 projected climate. In the 2080 drier climate conditions, Siberian forests are simulated to decrease significantly and shift northwards while forest-steppe and steppe would come to dominate 50 % of central Siberia. Permafrost is not predicted to thaw deep enough to sustain dark (Pinus sibirica, Abies sibirica, and Picea obovata) taiga. Dahurian larch (L. gmelinii+cajanderi), which is able to withstand permafrost, would remain the dominant tree species. Light conifers (Larix spp. and Pinus sylvestris) may gain an advantage over dark conifers in a predicted dry climate due to their resistance to water stress and wildfire. Habitats for new temperate broadleaf forests, non-existent in Siberia at present, are predicted by 2080.

Аннотация: Studies in Central Asia (Altai-Sayan region, northwest and central Mongolia) have shown that trees growing in arid conditions of mountain forest-steppes have a mixed and unstable climatic response. It is obvious that this nature of the climatic response of trees prevents the use of tree-ring chronologies for climate reconstruction. In this connection, it is necessary to separate the climatic signal of tree-ring chronologies, i.e., extract the signal for moisture. This paper proposes a method for separating the climatic signal of tree-ring chronologies of mountain forest-steppes, and reports estimates of its reliability by two independent methods. Analysis of the chronologies obtained after separation of the signal, based on meteorological and hydrological data, has shown that these chronologies can be used for climate reconstructions.

Аннотация: The prediction results of large-scale forest fire development are given for Siberia. To evaluate the fire risks, the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System (CFFWIS) and the Russian moisture indices (MI1 and MI2) were compared on the basis of the data of a network of meteorological stations as input weather parameters. Parameters of active fires were detected daily from the NOAA satellite data for the period of 1996-2008. To determine the length of the fire danger season, the snow cover fractions from Terra/MODIS data (2001-2008) were used. The features of fire development on territories with different types of flammable fuel are considered. The statistical analysis of the areas and number of fires typical of each vegetation class is made with the use of the GLC2000 vegetation map. A positive correlation (similar to 0.45, p < 0.05) between the cumulative area of local fires and the MI1 and Canadian BUI and DMC indices is revealed. The Canadian ISI and FWI indices describe best the diurnal dynamics of fire areas. The above correlations are higher (similar to 0.62, p < 0.05) when we select the fires larger than 2000-10000 ha in size for the forested areas. Other cases point to the lack of a linear relation between the fire area and the values of all indices, because the fire spread depends on many natural and anthropogenic factors.

Аннотация: Peculiarities of the dynamics and productivity of the pine forests growing under the conditions of the Transbaikalia arid climate are considered. Their high inflammability is noted. Fires sharpen the limiting role of moisture in tree growth. The post-fire annual ring fluctuations on longitudinal sections of young pines are illustrated. Outward diagnostic signs characterizing the xylogenesis state in trees damaged by fire have been analyzed: the char height on trunks, thermal damage to crowns, reduction and change in the tint of needle coloring. The process of digression dynamics of pyrogenic tree stands has been traced. Their reparation potential has been found to become weaker with ageing. As a result of the permanent effect of the pyrogenic factor, the productivity of pine forests in Transbaikalia is 1.5-2 times lower than of those in Priangarie.

Аннотация: Consideration is given to the results of studies on the postfire dynamics of Transbaikal forests, which are formed under conditions of highly arid climate and extreme pyrological regime. Data are presented on tree die-off and recruitment in naturally burned forests and in test stands affected by creeping fires differing in intensity. The hydrothermal regime of soils, precipitation runoff, and its multifactor models are discussed. It is shown that fires aggravate moisture deficiency on mountain slopes, impair the productivity of tree stands, and cause their digression. The statistics of forest fires and the risk of lightning fires are analyzed.

Аннотация: Variability of soil CO2 efflux strongly depends on soil temperature, soil moisture and plant phenology. Separating the effects of these factors is critical to understand the belowground carbon dynamics of forest ecosystem. In Ethiopia with its unreliable seasonal rainfall, variability of soil CO2 efflux may be particularly associated with seasonal variation. In this study, soil respiration was measured in nine plots under the canopies of three indigenous trees (Croton macrostachys, Podocarpus falcatus and Prunus africana) growing in an Afromontane forest of south-eastern Ethiopia. Our objectives were to investigate seasonal and diurnal variation in soil CO2 flux rate as a function of soil temperature and soil moisture, and to investigate the impact of tree species composition on soil respiration. Results showed that soil respiration displayed strong seasonal patterns, being lower during dry periods and higher during wet periods. The dependence of soil respiration on soil moisture under the three tree species explained about 50% of the seasonal variability. The relation followed a Gaussian function, and indicated a decrease in soil respiration at soil volumetric water contents exceeding a threshold of about 30%. Under more moist conditions soil respiration is tentatively limited by low oxygen supply. On a diurnal basis temperature dependency was observed, but not during dry periods when plant and soil microbial activities were restrained by moisture deficiency. Tree species influenced soil respiration, and there was a significant interaction effect of tree species and soil moisture on soil CO2 efflux variability. During wet (and cloudy) period, when shade tolerant late successional P. falcatus is having a physiological advantage, soil respiration under this tree species exceeded that under the other two species. In contrast, soil CO2 efflux rates under light demanding pioneer C. macrostachys appeared to be least sensitive to dry (but sunny) conditions. This is probably related to the relatively higher carbon assimilation rates and associated root respiration. We conclude that besides the anticipated changes in precipitation pattern in Ethiopia any anthropogenic disturbance fostering the pioneer species may alter the future ecosystem carbon balance by its impact on soil respiration. Аннотация: Vertical and horizontal distributions of soil organic carbon, potential microbial activity and basic soil properties were studied in a boreal mixed forest (Central Forest Reserve, TVER region) to elucidate whether the soil CO(2)-efflux is related to basic soil properties that affect the C pool and activity. Soil cores (0-100 cm depth) were taken from two transects every 50 meters (44 points) immediately after completion of soil CO(2)-efflux measurements. Soil was separated into layers and moisture, bulk density, root density and bacterial counts were determined within one day after soil was taken. Microbial respiration, biomass, CN contents and pH were measured within few months. The variability in the soil CO(2)-efflux and microbial activity was mainly explained by soil bulk density. Results further indicate that laboratory measurements of microbial respiration can represent heterotrophic soil respiration of a distinctive ecosystem in natural conditions, if microbial respiration is measured after the effect of soil handling disappears.

Аннотация: The effects of cutting on the ecological conditions and soil respiration in larch forests of Japan were studied. The cutting was found to significantly change the soil surface, resulting in the high spatial and temporal variation of the hydrothermal conditions and soil respiration. The influence of a stand's thinning on the environment and soil respiration is considered using the example of the thinning of a ripening larch stand in the Tomakomai National Forest (Hokkaido Island, Japan). The changes in the hydrothermal conditions (the temperature and moisture of the mineral soil layers and litter) and some other factors (the root and litter density and the C/N ratio) after the thinning of the stands and their influence on the soil respiration were studied. The soil respiration in the thinned forest site did not differ from that on the control plot, whereas the soil temperature was much higher in the former. The moisture of the soil mineral layers and the litter was the same. Despite the latter fact, no significant relationships between the soil respiration and its temperature and moisture were found. In the area covered with the thinned forest, the water content of the litter turned out to be the main microclimatic factor affecting the soil respiration. There, the fine roots and litter density were 18 and 15 % less, respectively. The thinning of the stand induced high variation of the soil respiration and temperature, as well as of the fine roots and the litter density. On the whole, the soil respiration in the larch forest studied in Japan was determined by the litter stock and the C to N ratio.

Аннотация: We present the first and longest (413 years) dataset on stable carbon isotope ratios in tree-ring cellulose (delta C-13), tree-ring width (TRW), and maximum latewood density (MXD) obtained from larch trees growing on permafrost under continental climate in the Suntar Khayata mountain ridge in Eastern Siberia (Russia). With this first study we calibrate tree-ring parameters against climate quantities, and based on these results assess the potential added value of MXD and especially of delta C-13 complementing TRW analysis for future climate reconstruction purposes. delta C-13 chronologies were corrected for human induced changes in atmospheric CO2 since AD 1800. Two different approaches were compared i) a correction referring merely to the decline in atmospheric delta C-13 (delta C-13(atm)) and ii) a correction additionally accounting for the increase in atmospheric partial pressure of CO2. delta C-13 chronologies are characterized by strong signal strength with only 4 trees representing the population signal at the site (mean inter-series correlation = 0.71 and EPS = 0.90). delta C-13 variation shows low similarity to TRW and MXD, while correlation between TRW and MXD is highly significant. Correlation analysis of tree-ring parameters with gridded instrumental data (Climate Research Unit, CRU TS 2.1) over the AD 1929-2000 calibration period demonstrates that TRW and MXD react as reported from other sites at cold and humid northern latitudes: precipitation plays no significant role, but strong dependencies on monthly mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, particularly of the current summer (June to August), are found (up to r=0.60, p<0.001). Combining instrumental data to a summer season mean (JJA) and TRW and MXD to a growth parameter mean (TRW+MXD), clearly shows the importance of the number of frost days and minimum temperatures during summer (r=0.67, p <0.001) to dominate tree growth and highlights the potential for climate reconstruction. Carbon isotope fixation in tree rings is obviously less controlled by temperature variables. In particular, the frost days and minimum temperature have a much smaller influence on delta C-13 than on tree growth. delta C-13 strongly reacts to current-year July precipitation (r=-0.44, p<0.05) and June-July maximum temperature (r=0.46, p<0.001). All significant (p<0.05) correlation coefficients are higher when using the corrected delta C-13 chronology considering an additional plant physiological response on increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, than using the chronology corrected for delta C-13(atm) changes alone. Spatial distribution of correlations between tree-ring data and climate variables for Eastern Siberia indicates that the summer temperature regime in the studied region is mostly influenced by Arctic air masses, but precipitation in July seems to be brought out from the Pacific region. Both the combined TRW+MXD record and the (513 C record revealed a high reconstruction potential for summer temperature and precipitation, respectively, particularly on decadal and longer-term scales. Аннотация: The specificity of the group and fraction composition of the organic matter in peat soils drained to a different extent that have developed for a 20-to 25-year period of hydro-and forest amelioration was characterized using the methods of multidimensional statistics. The differences in the organic matter of the soils studied are mainly determined by the contents of humic and fulvic acid of fractions 1 and 3, as well as of hemicelluloses and cellulose. The degree and depth of the humification are inversely related to the soil moisture and directly related to the peroxidase activity.

Аннотация: Multivariate analysis unambiguously demonstrated the differentiation of oxidoreductase activity (catalase, peroxidase, and dehydrogenase) in peat soils after a 20-25-year period of bog drainage and afforestation. The enzyme activity depended on the drainage depth. A statistical model has been developed to predict the degree of humification of peat organic matter from peroxidase activity and moisture of drained soils. Soil peroxidase activity can be an important indicator of the degree of biochemical transformation of drained and forested bogs.
