Structure and biomass of larch stands regenerating naturally after clear-cut logging
: материалы временных коллективов / I. M. Danilin // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 125-131. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Variations in the succession following cutting of a herbaceous Larix sibirica Ledeb. phytocoenosis along the southern boundary of boreal forests in southern Siberia and in Eastern Hentey, Mongolia, were studied. Morphometric methods were used to determine the dimensional hierarchies of coenopopulation individuals. Structure and productivity of the aboveground components including standing wood, herbaceous cover and litter were studied. The maximum aboveground phytomass was measured.

Modelling forest regeneration processes in clear-cut and burned areas in Angara Region
: материалы временных коллективов / V. A. Sokolov, S. K. Farber, I. M. Danilin // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 155-160. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: A method to select measures for enhancing natural forest-regeneration process in areas under extensive management is discussed. Using available information on geomorphological site characteristics and stand parameters, indices are determined using a specific criterion that describes the forest regeneration process. Using these indices as model inputs, cleacuts and burns can be classified; within each stratum the natural forest regeneration proces is similar. Analysing these strata, one can select a regime of forest treatment that is appropriate for a given stratum and, consequently, for the clearcuts (or burns) it includes.

Carbon pools and fluxes of 25-year old coniferous and deciduous stands in Middle Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / E. F. Vedrova // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 239-246. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Between 72 and 88% of carbon (C) loss in forest litter decomposition returns to the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. The share of water-soluble organic products does not exceed 3-4%. Between 8% under spruce and 25% under aspen and pine of the total C loss from litter organic matter goes to the formation of humus. Decomposition intensity of the dead organic matter on the soil surface is close to annual litterfall income (except under cedar). The specific rate of decomposition processes among the coniferous litters is minimum for cedar (167 mg C g-1 yr-1) and maximum for larch (249 mg C-1 yr-1). The spicific rate of decomposition of organic residues under aspen and birch canopies are 344 and 362 mg C-1 yr-1.

Aspen bark photosynthesis and its significance to remote sensing and carbon budget estimates in the boreal ecosystem
: материалы временных коллективов / V. I. Kharuk // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 483-497. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Our findings have shown that the spectral characteristics of aspen bark differ considerably from the "grey body" representations typically utilised in radiative transfer models. Also, since the bark and leaf canopy fractions have different C assimilation capacities, the partitioning of canopy Chl into leaf and bark strata should improve C assimilation estimates. Remote sensing technology must be relied upon, especially in vast and largely in accessible regions such as the boreal biome, for landscape- and regional-scale studies of C budgets. In these studies, estimates of forest productivity and C exchange currently rely on spectral indices obtained from remote satellite/aircraft sensors; these spectral ratios are used to indirectly estimate C assimilation through correlation with chlorophyll and photosynthetic capacity.

Carbon in vegetation of Russian forests: methods to estimate storage and geographical distribution
: материалы временных коллективов / V. Alexeyev [и др.] // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 271-282. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Estimates of carbon (C) storage for the forest vegetation of Russia vary to a considerable extent. In this paper we describe methods of estimating C storage of forest ecosystems and present estimates of C storage in the forest vegetationb of administrative territories and ecoregion of Russia. Estimates of C storage are based on National Forest Inventory data, estimates of the phytomass of trees and other vegetation of different forest ecosystems in various ecoregions of Russia, and mapped data for natural ecoregions. The forest ecosystems of Russia (771.1 Mha) have 118.8 Pg of C with 23.6% of the total in forest vegetation, 14.1% in the countries with temperate and boreal forest ecosystems.

Forest disturbance assessment using satellite data of moderate and low resolution
: материалы временных коллективов / M. A. Korets [и др.] // Environmental change in Siberia: earth observation, field studies and modelling. - Dordrecht et. al. : Springer, 2010. - С. 3-19. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Envisat-MERIS and SPOT Vegetation satelitte data were tested for estimation of vegetation cover disturbance caused by fire and industrial pollution in central and northern Siberia test sites, respectively. MERIS data were used to assess forest disturbance levels on burned sites in Angara region. Chlorophyll indexes (REP and MTCI) were found to allow identifying up to five forest disturbance levels due to high space-borne sensor resolution and sensitivity to chlorophyll content of vegetation. The current vegetation condition was assessed using MTCI index in the northern (Norilsk) test region. The lowest index values calculated for the most severely disturbed vegetation near Norilsk were found to correlate with sulphur concentrations in larch and spruce needles. Another approach to estimating spatial and temporal trends of vegetation condition used the 1998-2005 SPOT-Vegetation satellite data. The relationships obtained between MTCI, NDVI values, and forest mortality were based upon to map the 1998-2005 forest degradation zone dynamics in the northern test site.

    Forest fuel smoke producing capability
: материалы временных коллективов / A. V. Bryukhanov, P. A. Osavelyuk, E. V. Guliaeva // Boreal forests in a changing world: challenges and needs for action: Proceedings of the International conference August 15-21 2011, Krasnoyarsk, Russia. - Krasnoyarsk : V.N. Аннотация: The total environmental damage induced by pollution by smoke from wildfires is difficult to evaluate even roughly. This is partly due to insufficient data on smoke pollution, which is in turn attributed to unsufficient or even lacking estimated data composition and amounts of emissions from wildfires. Laboratory analysis of smoke producing capability (SPC), or smoke production coefficient would enable to make compilation of a comprehensive database of negative impacts smoke emission of wildfire. Our study showed that for boreal Siberian species the greatest SPC produced birch bark (Betula).

Аннотация: The quantitative and functional responses of soil microbial cenoses in the forest-tundra zone to pollution have been studied in the area exposed to emissions from the Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Works. The strongest structural and functional disturbances of the soil biota have been recorded on the plots with completely destroyed vegetation. A decrease in the content of microbial carbon and an elevated respiration rate in the technogenically transformed soils provide evidence for the functioning of the microbial communities under stress caused by the continuous input of aggressive pollutants. The degree of transformation and the contents of technogenic elements (Ni, Cu, Co, Pb, and S) in the organic horizons of the forest-tundra soils are the major factors affecting the development and functioning of the soil microbial cenoses.

Аннотация: This paper analyses aerosol particle number size distributions, particulate absorption at 570 nm wavelength and carbon monoxide (CO) measured between September 2006 and January 2010 at heights of 50 and 300 m at the Zotino Tall Tower Facility (ZOTTO) in Siberia (60.8 degrees N; 89.35 degrees E). Average number, surface and volume concentrations are broadly comparable to former studies covering shorter observation periods. Fits of multiple lognormal distributions yielded three maxima in probability distribution of geometric mean diameters in the Aitken and accumulation size range and a possible secondary maximum in the nucleation size range below 25 nm. The seasonal cycle of particulate absorption shows maximum concentrations in high winter (December) and minimum concentrations in mid-summer (July). The 90th percentile, however, indicates a secondary maximum in July/August that is likely related to forest fires. The strongly combustion derived CO shows a single winter maximum and a late summer minimum, albeit with a considerably smaller seasonal swing than the particle data due to its longer atmospheric lifetime. Total volume and even more so total number show a more complex seasonal variation with maxima in winter, spring, and summer. A cluster analysis of back trajectories and vertical profiles of the pseudo-potential temperature yielded ten clusters with three levels of particle number concentration: Low concentrations in Arctic air masses (400-500 cm(-3)), mid-level concentrations for zonally advected air masses from westerly directions between 55 degrees and 65 degrees N (600-800 cm(-3)), and high concentrations for air masses advected from the belt of industrial and population centers in Siberia and Kazakhstan (1200 cm(-3)). The observational data is representative for large parts of the troposphere over Siberia and might be particularly useful for the validation of global aerosol transport models.

Аннотация: The abundance distribution of different ecological groups of lichens depending on bark pH has been studied on 1- to 24-year shoots of Siberian fir in the mountains of southern Siberia. Along with acidophytic lichens commonly found on the Siberian fir (Usnea sp., Bryoria sp., etc.), its young shoots are also colonized by nitrophytic species (Physcia tenella, Melanelia exasperatula, etc.), which is evidence for the increasing pH of shoot bark. The proportion of thalli of nitrophytic lichen species shows a significant positive correlation with the pH of the upper (dusted) bark layer and is greater in the Eastern Sayan (at bark pH averaging 5.4) than in the Western Sayan (pH 4.7). The trends revealed in this study may be used for indication of pollution and ecological monitoring of forest ecosystems.

The atmospheric aerosol over Siberia, as seen from the 300 m ZOTTO tower

Аннотация: This report describes a unique setup for aerosol measurements at the new long-term Tall Tower monitoring facility near Zotino, Siberia (ZOTTO). Through two inlets at 50 and 300 m aerosol particle number size distributions are measured since September 2006 in the size range 15-835 nanometer dry diameter. Until the end of May 2007 total number (N(300)) concentrations at 300 m height ranged between 400 cm(-3) (5%) and 4000 cm(-3) (95%) with a median of 1200 cm(-3), which is rather high for a nearly uninhabited boreal forest region during the low productivity period of the year. Fitting 1-h average distributions with a maximum of four lognormal functions yielded frequent ultrafine modes below 20 nm at 50 m height than at 300 m, whereas the latter height more frequently showed an aged nucleation mode near 30 nm. The positions of Aitken (approximate to 80 nm) and accumulation modes (approximate to 210 nm) were very similar at both inlet heights, the very sharp latter one being the most frequent of all modes. The encouraging first results let us expect exciting new findings during the summer period with frequent forest fires and secondary particle sources from vegetation emissions.

Аннотация: The distribution of different ecological groups of lichens (acidophytes, 'nitrophytes', indifferent species) was compared on 1-24 year-old twigs of Abies sibirica sampled in the 'pristine' West Sayan and the polluted East Sayan Mountains (Krasnoyarsk District, South Siberia, Russia) to test their value as indicators of current pollution effects. Bark pH of twigs and bark chemistry (N, S, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe) were measured, and a preliminary estimate of emissions in the Krasnoyarsk District from livestock animal populations was calculated. In both regions, an unusually high twig bark pH and an abnormal species composition for A. sibirica canopy were found (e.g. Physcia aipolia, P. dubia, P. tenella, Phaeophyscia sp., Melanelia exasperatula and Candelariella vitellina), with P. tenella (East Sayan) and M. exasperatula (West Sayan) as dominants. The results confirm that the distribution of lichen species on Abies sibirica twigs is a valuable indicator of current changes in atmospheric conditions.

Аннотация: Thallus morphology and element concentrations (S, Al, Fe, Sr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cu, Pb, As, F, and Cl) were compared in samples of the fruticose lichen genus Usnea at two heights of the Abies sibirica canopy in the East Sayan Mountains (Krasnoyarsk District, Russia) sampled from three stations at 15, 25 and 35 km from Krasnoyark. Usnea species with an abnormal morphology dominated on branches in the upper canopy, 15-22 m above ground level, and normal thalli on lower tree branches, 2-5 m above ground. Abnormal thalli at the tree-top level contained higher Al, Fe, Zn, F, Sr and Pb concentrations compared with normal thalli growing below, confirming a dust impact. No such clear trend was observed between sampling stations. Crown canopy architecture, surface microtopography and the balance between the processes of deposition and the movement and loss of particles play a major role in particle interception and in pollutant delivery to Usnea. Аннотация: Two methods for evaluation of pine stand vigor were tested on permanent sample plots near Krasnoyarsk City: visual evaluation and exposure to fungal metabolites. In the first case, forest vigor was estimated using the six-point system of the Sanitary Regulations of the Russian Federation as the mean score for 200 trees on the sample plots. In the second case, the vigor was evaluated from the size of the necrotic spot on inner bark of the tree after inoculation of 22-25 randomly chosen pines with the extract of fungus Ceratocystis laricicola Redfern and Minter. The necrotic spot size was significantly larger in pines from polluted forest as compared to background one. This points to the decrease in infection protection of trees affected by pollution, although visual evaluation of the stand vigor could not distinguish the polluted and background stands.

Аннотация: Environmental conditions causing stress have a significant effect on the generative organs of Scotch pine. The parameters characterizing pine pollen are subject to significant interannual variations and are closely connected with weather and climatic conditions in the period of pollen formation. Airborne pollutants affect the quality of pine pollen, which is especially apparent in the years favorable for the formation of microspores. The ability of Scotch pine pollen to germinate and form pollen tubes in the regions with different technogenic loads proved to be significantly lower than in tree stands of the background areas.
