Plant species composition dynamics on the initial stages of postfire progressive successions in Siberian cryolithic zone
: материалы временных коллективов / O. A. Zyryanova, T. N. Bugayenko, N. N. Bugayenko, Y. Matsuura // Proceedings of the seventh symposium on the joint Siberian permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1998 : Hokkaido University, 1999. - С. 59-66. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: In 3-4 years after the fire the number of the vascular plants is 1:2-1.3 times more as compared to that of radial larch association. Both the appearance of the new plant species and their families as well as the restitution on beforefire plants are responsible for the high level of species diversity on the initial stages of progressive successions. Temporal and spatial structure of the radical larch community is destroyed in two years after the fire.

Forest-based bioenergy in the Eurasian context
: материалы временных коллективов / F. Kraxner, S. Leduc, A. Z. Shvidenko // Boreal forests in a changing world: challenges and needs for action: Proceedings of the International conference August 15-21 2011, Krasnoyarsk, Russia. - Krasnoyarsk : V.N. Sukachev Institute of forest SB RAS, 2011. - С. 34-39. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: This study analyses the Russian forest biomass -based bioenergy sector. It is shown that presently - although given abundant resources - the share of heat and electricity from biomass is very minor. With the help of 2 IIASA models, future green-field bioenergy plants are identified in a geographically explicit way. Resulkts indicate that by using only 3.3% of the total wood removals, twice as much heat and electricity that presently available from biomass could be generated. Furthermore, there is a multitude of co-benefits quantified for the socio-economic sector such as green jobs linked to bioenergy.

Trophic adaptation of the Siberian moth in its native range and beyond the distribution boudary
: материалы временных коллективов / N. I. Kirichenko, Yu. N. Baranchikov // Boreal forests in a changing world: challenges and needs for action: Proceedings of the International conference August 15-21 2011, Krasnoyarsk, Russia. - Krasnoyarsk : V.N. Аннотация: This is a short review of our recent studies on trophic adaptation of a boreal forest pest, the Siberian moth in its native range, North Asia and in Central Europe where the species is believed to invade in a near future. In Europe, the hierarchy in suitability of host plant genera (increasing from two-needle pines, spruce, fir, to larch) remains similar to that in the pest range. Besides European plants, some North American conifers from genera which do not exist in the pest habitat can be served as potential hosts for the insect.

As predicted by the enemy release hypothesis, plants are supposedly less attacked by herbivores in their introduced range than in their native range. However, the nature of the natural enemies, in particular their degree of specificity may also affect the level of enemy escape. It is therefore expected that ectophagous invertebrate species, being generally considered as more generalists than endophagous species, are more prompt to colonise alien plants. In Swiss, Siberian and Russian Far East arboreta, we tested whether alien woody plants are less attacked by native herbivorous insects than native congeneric woody plant species. We also tested the hypothesis that leaf miners and gall makers show stronger preference for native woody plants than external leaf chewers. In all investigated regions, leaf miners and gall makers were more abundant and showed higher species richness on native woody plants than on congeneric alien plants. In contrast, external leaf chewers did not cause more damage to native plants than to alien plants, possibly because leaf chewers are, in general, less species specific than leaf miners and gall makers. These results, obtained over a very large number of plant-enemy systems, generally support the hypothesis that alien plants partly escape from phytophagous invertebrates but also show that different feeding guilds may react differently to the introduction of alien plants.

Аннотация: Stable Ca and radiogenic Sr isotope compositions were measured in different compartments (stream water, soil solutions, rocks, soils and soil leachates and vegetation) of a small permafrost-dominated watershed in the Central Siberian Plateau. The Sr and Ca in the area are supplied by basalt weathering and atmospheric depositions, which significantly impact the Sr isotopic compositions. Only vegetation significantly fractionates the calcium isotopes within the watershed. These fractionations occur during Ca uptake by roots and along the transpiration stream within the larch trees and are hypothesised to be the result of chromatographic processes and Ca oxalate crystallisations during Ca circulation or storage within plant organs. Biomass degradation significantly influences the Ca isotopic compositions of soil solutions and soil leachates via the release of light Ca, and organic and organo-mineral colloids are thought to affect the Ca isotopic compositions of soil solutions by preferential scavenging of Ca-40. The imprint of organic matter degradation on the delta Ca-44/40 of soil solutions is much more significant for the warmer south-facing slope of the watershed than for the shallow and cold soil active layer of the north-facing slope. As a result, the available stock of biomass and the decomposition rates appear to be critical parameters that regulate the impact of vegetation on the soil-water system in permafrost areas. Finally, the obtained delta Ca-44/40 patterns contrast with those described for permafrost-free environments with a much lower delta Ca-44/40 fractionation factor between soils and plants, suggesting specific features of organic matter decomposition in permafrost environments. The biologically induced Ca isotopic fractionation observed at the soil profile scale is not pronounced at the scale of the streams and large rivers in which the delta Ca-44/40 signature may be controlled by the heterogeneity of lithological sources.     Influence of drying of the samples on the transformation of nitrogen and carbon compounds in mountain-meadow alpine soils

Аннотация: The drying of samples of mountain-meadow soils characterized by their permanently high moisture under natural conditions fundamentally changes the concentrations of the labile nitrogen and carbon compounds, as well as the patterns of their microbial transformation. When the soil samples are dried, a four- to fivefold increase in the content of the extractable organic nitrogen compounds, carbon compounds, and inorganic nitrogen compounds is observed, while the content of nitrogen and carbon of the microbial biomass decreases by two-three times. The rewetting of the dried soil launches the process of the replenishment of the nitrogen and carbon reserves in the microbial biomass. However, even after two weeks of incubation, their values were 1.5-2 times lower than the initial values typical of the natural soil. The restoration of the microbial community in the samples of the previously dried soils occurs in the absence of a deficiency of labile organic compounds and is accompanied by their active mineralization and the low uptake of ammonium nitrogen by the microorganisms.

Аннотация: Thanks to acclimation, trees overcome environmental changes and endure for centuries. The anatomy of water conducting cells is an important factor determining plant success. Forming cells are coupled with the environment and their properties are naturally archived in the wood. Its variability across tree rings can thus provide a retrospective of plant's hydraulic adjustments. In this work, we measured lumen and wall thickness of tracheids along tree-rings to explore how trees regulate their conducting system under variable plant-water conditions. Tracheids were measured along 51 dated rings of five mature Larix decidua and Picea abies trees from a low elevation site. Anatomical-based chronologies of annual growth performance, hydraulic conductance and safety, and construction costs were built. Similarities among chronologies and the relation to monthly climate data were analyzed. Most parameters displayed high annual plasticity which was partly coherent among trees and mostly associated with radial growth. In general, summer drought reduced growth and potential hydraulic conductivity of the forming ring, and increased hydraulic safety and construction costs. To evaluate the functional relevance of the annual acclimation, the conductivity of the forming ring relative to the entire sapwood needs to be assessed.

Аннотация: Embryogenic callus formation in different larch species from Siberia (Larix sibirica, L. gmelinii, and L. sukaczewii) was carried out on MSGm medium supplemented with growth regulators (2.4-D and BAP) and followed one and the same scheme: elongation of somatic cells and their asymmetric division with formation of initial and tube cells. The cells of embryo initial underwent sequential divisions and formed embryonic globules which caused the formation of somatic embryos. Somatic embryos became mature and germinated by addition of ABA and PEG into the medium. Long-term proliferating cell lines and regenerant plants were obtained in Sukachev larch and its hybrid with Siberian larch. The success of somatic embryogenesis depended on the genotype of the donor tree.

Uses of tree saps in northern and eastern parts of Europe

Аннотация: In this article we review the use of tree saps in northern and eastern Europe. Published accounts by travellers, ethnologists and ethnobotanists were searched for historical and contemporary details. Field observations made by the authors have also been used. The presented data shows that the use of tree sap has occurred in most north and eastern European countries. It can be assumed that tree saps were most used where there were extensive stands of birch or maple trees, as these two genera generally produce the largest amount of sap. The taxa most commonly used have been Betula pendula, B. pubescens, and Acer platanoides, but scattered data on the use of several other taxa are presented. Tree sap was used as a fresh drink, but also as an ingredient in food and beverages. It was also fermented to make light alcoholic products like ale and wine. Other folk uses of tree saps vary from supplementary nutrition in the form of sugar, minerals and vitamins, to cosmetic applications for skin and hair and folk medicinal use. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the only countries where the gathering and use of sap (mainly birch sap) has remained an important activity until recently, due to the existence of large birch forests, low population density and the incorporation of sap into the former Soviet economic system. It is evident that gathering sap from birch and other trees was more widespread in earlier times. There are records indicating extensive use of tree saps from Scandinavia, Poland, Slovakia and Romania, but it is primarily of a historical character. The extraction of tree sap in these countries is nowadays viewed as a curiosity carried out only by a few individuals. However, tree saps have been regaining popularity in urban settings through niche trading.

Аннотация: The symbiotic fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by leguminous plants in the alpine community of a lichen heath at the Teberda State Biosphere Reserve is well adapted to low soil temperature characteristic for the altitude of 2800 m a.s.l. For the determination of the N fixation by isotopic methods (the method of the natural (15)N abundance and the method of isotopic (15)N dilution), Trifolium polyphyllum was taken as the control plant. This plant was used as it does not form symbiosis with the nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the highlands of the Northern Caucasus Region. The contribution of the N fixation to the N nutrition of different leguminous plant species as determined by the natural (15)N abundance method amounted to 28-73% at delta(15)N(0) = 0aEuro degrees and 46-117% at delta(15)N(0) = -1aEuro degrees; for the determination of the N fixation by the method of the isotopic label's dilution, it was 34-97%. The best correlation of the results obtained by these two isotopic methods was observed for the natural fractionation of the N isotopes in the course of the N fixation in the range of -0.5 to -0.7aEuro degrees. The determination of the nitrogenase activity of the roots by the acetylene method confirmed the absence of N fixation in T. polyphyllum and its different contribution to the N nutrition of different species of leguminous plants.

Аннотация: The content and composition of alcohol soluble phenolic acids (PhAs) were studied during cell xylem growth in course of wood annual increment formation in the trunks of Scots pine. Cells of the cambium zone, two stages of expansion growth, and outset of secondary thickening zone (before lignification) within the period of formation of early wood xylem were subsequently isolated from trunk segments of 25-year-old trees with constant anatomical and histochemical control. The amount of free and bound forms of phenolic acids extracted from tissues by 80% ethanol, as well as their ethers and esters, were calculated both per dry weight and per cells. The substantial alteration in content, proportion of fractions and composition of acids has been found between the cambium zone and the outset of secondary thickening of tracheids, and the character of variation depended on the calculation method. The amount of free and bound PhAs and esters and especially ethers calculated per cell had increased at the first stage of extension growth, reduced at the second, and increased in the outset of secondary wall deposition. The pool of bound acids was more than acids by 2-5 times depending on the stage of development of the cells. Sinapic and ferulic acids dominate among free hydroxycinnamic acids. The composition and the content of hydroxycinnamic acids in esters and ethers also depended on the stage of development of the cells. p-Coumaric and sinapic acids were the main aglycons in ethers in the cambium and sinapic and caffeic acids were in the other stages. The esters from cambium included mostly p-coumaric acid and those at other stages of development were sinapic and ferulic acids. The esters included benzoic acid at the first stages of growth. The pool of these esters decreased from the first phase of growth until the outset of cell wall thickening. The level of free benzoic acid increased respectively.

Mixed-power scaling of whole-plant respiration from seedlings to giant trees

Аннотация: The scaling of respiratory metabolism with body mass is one of the most pervasive phenomena in biology. Using a single allometric equation to characterize empirical scaling relationships and to evaluate alternative hypotheses about mechanisms has been controversial. We developed a method to directly measure respiration of 271 whole plants, spanning nine orders of magnitude in body mass, from small seedlings to large trees, and from tropical to boreal ecosystems. Our measurements include the roots, which have often been ignored. Rather than a single power-law relationship, our data are fit by a biphasic, mixed-power function. The allometric exponent varies continuously from 1 in the smallest plants to 3/4 in larger saplings and trees. Therefore, our findings support the recent findings of Reich et al. [Reich PB, Tjoelker MG, Machado JL, Oleksyn J (2006) Universal scaling of respiratory metabolism, size, and nitrogen in plants. Nature 439: 457-461] and West, Brown, and Enquist [West GB, Brown JH, Enquist BJ (1997) A general model for the origin of allometric scaling laws in biology. Science 276: 122 - 126.]. The transition from linear to 3/4-power scaling may indicate fundamental physical and physiological constraints on the allocation of plant biomass between photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic organs over the course of ontogenetic plant growth.

Аннотация: Plant species exert strong effects on ecosystem functions and one of the emerging, and difficult to test hypotheses, is that plants alter soil functions through changing the community structure of soil microorganisms. We tested the hypothesis for atmospheric CH4 oxidation by using soil samples from a Siberian afforestation experiment and exposing them to C-13-CH4. We determined the activity of the soil methanotrophs under different tree species at three levels of initial CH4 concentration (30, 200 and 1000 ppm) thus distinguishing the activities of low- and high-affinity methanotrophs. Half of the samples were incubated with C-13-enriched CH4 (99.9%) and half with C-12-CH4. This allowed an estimation of the amount of C-13 incorporated into individual PLFAs and determination of PLFAs of methanotrophs involved in CH4 oxidation at the different CH4 concentrations. Tree species strongly altered the activity of atmospheric CH4 oxidation without appearing to change the composition of high-affinity methanotrophs as evidenced by PLFA C-13 labeling. The low diversity of atmospheric CH4 oxidizers, presumably belonging to the UCS alpha group, may explain the lack of tree species effects on the composition of soil methanotrophs. We submit that the observed tree species effects on atmospheric CH4 oxidation indicate an effect on biomass or cell-specific activities rather than by a community change and this may be related to the impact of the tree species on soil N cycling. Siberian moth -- larvae -- host plants -- withdrawn food

Аннотация: Experimental evaluation of the mass of food withdrawn by larvae of the Siberian moth during their development on larch, cedar pine, fir, spruce, and common pine was carried out. The obtained dependences between the masses of larvae and food withdrawn by them can be directly used to determine the withdrawn food rate of Siberian moth on each of the Siberian conifer species.
