Genetic diversity and population structure of Siberian fir (Abies sibirica LEDEB.) in Middle Siberia, Russia
: материалы временных коллективов / A. Ya. Larionova, A. K. Ekart, A. N. Kravchenko // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-2. - С. 185-192. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The genetic diversity and population structure of Siberian fir (Abies sibirica LEDEB.) in Middle Siberia were studied on the basis of allozyme variation analysis at 20 loci. The vegetatives buds collected from 260 trees in nine populations representing different geographical localities and altitudinal sites were used as materials for study. Horizsontal starch gel electrophoresis was applied to analyze the isozyme patterns of 11 enzyme systems. 20% of the gene loci assayed were revealed to be polymorphic at 95%, and 35% at a 99% criterion. The mean number of alleles per locus, the mean observed heterozygosity, the mean expected heterozygosity, and the effective number of alleles were equal. The obtained data indicates a low level of genetic diversity and a weak differentiation among the A. sibirica populations studied in Middle Siberia. The most significant difference in structure was that between Kozulka and Western Sayan.

Integrated approach to monitoring of the Siberian moth population density
: absracts / V. M. Pet'ko [и др.] // Enviromis. International conference on enviromental observations, modelling and information systems, Tomsk, Russia, July 1-8, 2006: program and abstracts. - 2006. - С. 95

Аннотация: The Siberian moth (SM), is the most destructive defoliator of conifers in Northern Asia. It could have a serious impact on native forests. The present day monitoring methods of SM populations density, based on trees shaking for larve sampling, are labor-intensive, expensive and require an optimization. Although larve sampling is an extremely expensive procedure, only its' results may be a basis for presribed insecticide spraying of pest population.

Isoenzyme diversity and differentiation of Marsh Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) population in the Western Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / A. Ya. Larionova, A. K. Ekart // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2011. - Vol.14-1. - С. 21-28. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Genetic diversity and defferentiation of Scotch pine populations situated on eutrophic, mesetrophic, oligotrophic swamps and on dry land in south-taiga subzone of Western Siberia lowland (Tomsk region) were srudied on the basis of allozyme variation analysis at 20 loci. The most essential distinctions in genetic structure were revealed between populations of Scotch pine growing under contrast conditions of water-mineral nutrition on eutrophic and oligotrophic swamps as well as between populations situated on the various oligotrophic swamps. The obtained results testify to considerable genetic heterogeneity studied in Tomsk region of marsh populations of Scotch pine.

Аннотация: The genetic diversity of SSR markers was studied in six populations of Siberian larch, two popu-lations of Gmelin larch, and four populations of Cajander larch. Seven pairs of nuclear microsatellite loci were used for this analysis. 103 allelic variants were detected in 365 individuals of three species of larch. According to the AMOVA results, the variability proportion that characterizes the differences between three Larix species was twice as higher (15%) than the proportion that accounts for among-population differences within the species (6%). The differentiation of the populations of three species of larch based on SSR markers exceeded 12% (F (ST) = 0.121). A significant correlation of the genetic distances with the geographic distances between populations was found (r = 0.835, P = 0.01).

Аннотация: Using AFLP analysis, the genetic variation in four population samples of Rhododendron ledebourii, three such samples of Rh. dauricum, two samples of Rh. sichotense, and one sample of Rh. mucronulatum was examined. Application of three selective primer pairs provided genotyping of 87 accessions from the four species at 213 loci. An analysis of molecular variance revealed a high level of differences between all four species (F (ST) = 0.172). Populations within the species were also differentiated: for Rh. dauricum F (ST) = 0.245; Rh. ledebourii F (ST) = 0.264; Rh. sichotense F (ST) = 0.034. The highest Nei distance was observed for Rh. mucronulatum with Rh. dauricum and Rh. ledebourii (D = 0.057 and 0.069, respectively). Similarity was observed between the species pairs of Rh. ledebourii-Rh. dauricum (0.032) and Rh. sichotense-Rh. mucronulatum (0.034). The Far Eastern species Rh. sichotense and Rh. mucronulatum were characterized by an elevated level of intrapopulation variation. The data from the AFLP-based analysis of differentiation and variation that were thus obtained were compared with the literature data on the morphological criteria that differentiate the species of interest and those regarding the history of the formation of their ranges. The independence of all the species we examined was confirmed.

Uses of tree saps in northern and eastern parts of Europe

Аннотация: In this article we review the use of tree saps in northern and eastern Europe. Published accounts by travellers, ethnologists and ethnobotanists were searched for historical and contemporary details. Field observations made by the authors have also been used. The presented data shows that the use of tree sap has occurred in most north and eastern European countries. It can be assumed that tree saps were most used where there were extensive stands of birch or maple trees, as these two genera generally produce the largest amount of sap. The taxa most commonly used have been Betula pendula, B. pubescens, and Acer platanoides, but scattered data on the use of several other taxa are presented. Tree sap was used as a fresh drink, but also as an ingredient in food and beverages. It was also fermented to make light alcoholic products like ale and wine. Other folk uses of tree saps vary from supplementary nutrition in the form of sugar, minerals and vitamins, to cosmetic applications for skin and hair and folk medicinal use. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the only countries where the gathering and use of sap (mainly birch sap) has remained an important activity until recently, due to the existence of large birch forests, low population density and the incorporation of sap into the former Soviet economic system. It is evident that gathering sap from birch and other trees was more widespread in earlier times. There are records indicating extensive use of tree saps from Scandinavia, Poland, Slovakia and Romania, but it is primarily of a historical character. The extraction of tree sap in these countries is nowadays viewed as a curiosity carried out only by a few individuals. However, tree saps have been regaining popularity in urban settings through niche trading.

dwarfism of growth -- adaptation -- morphological variability -- fruiting

Аннотация: Dwarf and typical trees of Pinus silvestris L. in Shirinskaya forest-steppe are compared on variability of vegetative and generative organs and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruiting. Special attention is paid to investigation of the correlation structure of characters in the compared samples. It has been determined that the dwarf pines are characterized by high variability of dimensional and qualitative characteristics. In spite of generally low reproductive potential of dwarf trees some species are distinguished by regular and abundant fruiting. They are characterized by higher correlation of characteristics and tendency to gonochorism. In spite of generally small contribution of dwarf species into the reproduction of pine population, it is quite consistent with the small area occupied by rocks within the studied territory. Some species are distinguished by higher reproductive potential and may be used to solve the problems of selection.

Аннотация: Changes in the composition of microbial complexes and their biochemical activity in soil in the vicinity of a strong source of HF emission have been studied. A sharp decrease of the biomass, the number of asporous bacteria and actinomycetes, and a smaller decrease of the number of microscopic fungi has been revealed, along with a decrease in the enzymatic and respiratory activity of contaminated soil with the relative increase in the fraction of sporiferous bacteria. On the basis of the response of introduced population of Bacillus subtilis to different doses of HF, NaF, Na(2)SO(3) microbiological norm-fixing for technogenic soil ecosystems has been carried out.

Аннотация: This paper analyses aerosol particle number size distributions, particulate absorption at 570 nm wavelength and carbon monoxide (CO) measured between September 2006 and January 2010 at heights of 50 and 300 m at the Zotino Tall Tower Facility (ZOTTO) in Siberia (60.8 degrees N; 89.35 degrees E). Average number, surface and volume concentrations are broadly comparable to former studies covering shorter observation periods. Fits of multiple lognormal distributions yielded three maxima in probability distribution of geometric mean diameters in the Aitken and accumulation size range and a possible secondary maximum in the nucleation size range below 25 nm. The seasonal cycle of particulate absorption shows maximum concentrations in high winter (December) and minimum concentrations in mid-summer (July). The 90th percentile, however, indicates a secondary maximum in July/August that is likely related to forest fires. The strongly combustion derived CO shows a single winter maximum and a late summer minimum, albeit with a considerably smaller seasonal swing than the particle data due to its longer atmospheric lifetime. Total volume and even more so total number show a more complex seasonal variation with maxima in winter, spring, and summer. A cluster analysis of back trajectories and vertical profiles of the pseudo-potential temperature yielded ten clusters with three levels of particle number concentration: Low concentrations in Arctic air masses (400-500 cm(-3)), mid-level concentrations for zonally advected air masses from westerly directions between 55 degrees and 65 degrees N (600-800 cm(-3)), and high concentrations for air masses advected from the belt of industrial and population centers in Siberia and Kazakhstan (1200 cm(-3)). The observational data is representative for large parts of the troposphere over Siberia and might be particularly useful for the validation of global aerosol transport models.

Аннотация: The postfire transformation of the functional activity of the microbial cenoses and the main soil properties under mixed larch forests were studied in the lower reaches of the Angara River. It was shown that the intensity of the postfire changes in the population density, biomass, and activity of the microorganisms in the dark podzolized brown forest soil depended on the degree of burning of the ground cover and the surface litter during the fire. The maximum effects of the fire on the microbial cenoses were observed in the litter and the upper 5-cm-thick layer of the dark-humus horizon in the areas of intense burning. The postfire restoration of the structural-functional activity of the microbial cenoses was determined by the degree of transformation of soil properties and by the postpyrogenic succession in the ground cover. The microbial complexes of the dark podzolized brown forest soils under mixed larch forests in the studied region restored their functional activity after the fires of different intensities quicker than the microbial cenoses of the sandy podzols in the pyrogenic lichen-green-moss pine forests of the same zone.

Аннотация: Polymorphism of 11 enzyme systems has been studied in dwarf Scots pine trees occurring on sand dunes and crags in two populations of southern Central Siberia. High genotypic variability of dwarfs and their similarity to normal trees in basic indices of genetic diversity have been revealed. Both populations, including normal and dwarf trees, are in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The sample of dwarf trees has proved to differ from the "norm" in showing an age-related trend toward decreased heterozygosity. The observed linkage disequilibrium at some pairs of loci can be explained by unequal contributions of trees to population reproduction or by a recent bottleneck event. The populations studied are similar to other Scots pine populations from the Asian part of the species range. Increased frequencies of some rare alleles in the populations from Tuva provide evidence for the probable presence of a glacial refugium for pine in this region.

Аннотация: Some indices of individual variability in annual growth of Siberian larch in open woodlands of Khakassia are compared. In the Shira forest-steppe the Siberian larch exhibits high sensitivity of annual growth and diverse responses to changes in vegetative conditions. Stabilizing selection maintains dominance of trees with moderately sensitive annual growth. Such trees are the most vital. It has been shown that the adaptive norm of population's response and the individual variability of annual growth positively correlate with the total annual precipitation. The sensitivity index of annual growth is a better indicator of the genetic structure of the population than the coefficient of variability of annual growth indices.

Climate signals in tree-ring width, density and delta C-13 from larches in Eastern Siberia (Russia)
[Text] / A. V. Kirdyanov [et al.] // Chem. Geol. - 2008. - Vol. 252, Is. 01.02.2013. - P31-41, DOI 10.1016/j.chemgeo.2008.01.023. - Cited References: 74 . - 11. - ISSN 0009-2541

Аннотация: We present the first and longest (413 years) dataset on stable carbon isotope ratios in tree-ring cellulose (delta C-13), tree-ring width (TRW), and maximum latewood density (MXD) obtained from larch trees growing on permafrost under continental climate in the Suntar Khayata mountain ridge in Eastern Siberia (Russia). With this first study we calibrate tree-ring parameters against climate quantities, and based on these results assess the potential added value of MXD and especially of delta C-13 complementing TRW analysis for future climate reconstruction purposes. delta C-13 chronologies were corrected for human induced changes in atmospheric CO2 since AD 1800. Two different approaches were compared i) a correction referring merely to the decline in atmospheric delta C-13 (delta C-13(atm)) and ii) a correction additionally accounting for the increase in atmospheric partial pressure of CO2. delta C-13 chronologies are characterized by strong signal strength with only 4 trees representing the population signal at the site (mean inter-series correlation = 0.71 and EPS = 0.90). delta C-13 variation shows low similarity to TRW and MXD, while correlation between TRW and MXD is highly significant. Correlation analysis of tree-ring parameters with gridded instrumental data (Climate Research Unit, CRU TS 2.1) over the AD 1929-2000 calibration period demonstrates that TRW and MXD react as reported from other sites at cold and humid northern latitudes: precipitation plays no significant role, but strong dependencies on monthly mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, particularly of the current summer (June to August), are found (up to r=0.60, p<0.001). Combining instrumental data to a summer season mean (JJA) and TRW and MXD to a growth parameter mean (TRW+MXD), clearly shows the importance of the number of frost days and minimum temperatures during summer (r=0.67, p <0.001) to dominate tree growth and highlights the potential for climate reconstruction. Carbon isotope fixation in tree rings is obviously less controlled by temperature variables. In particular, the frost days and minimum temperature have a much smaller influence on delta C-13 than on tree growth. delta C-13 strongly reacts to current-year July precipitation (r=-0.44, p<0.05) and June-July maximum temperature (r=0.46, p<0.001). All significant (p<0.05) correlation coefficients are higher when using the corrected delta C-13 chronology considering an additional plant physiological response on increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, than using the chronology corrected for delta C-13(atm) changes alone. Spatial distribution of correlations between tree-ring data and climate variables for Eastern Siberia indicates that the summer temperature regime in the studied region is mostly influenced by Arctic air masses, but precipitation in July seems to be brought out from the Pacific region. Both the combined TRW+MXD record and the (513 C record revealed a high reconstruction potential for summer temperature and precipitation, respectively, particularly on decadal and longer-term scales.     Soil functioning in foci of Siberian moth population outbreaks in the southern taiga subzone of Central Siberia

Аннотация: The results of experimental studies on the contribution of zoogenic debris to transformation of soil properties in the southern taiga subzone of Central Siberia are analyzed. They show that water-soluble carbon outflow from the forest litter increases by 21-26% upon a Siberian moth invasion, with this value decreasing to 14% one year later. The burning of forest in an area completely defoliated by the pest leads to changes in the stock, fractional composition, actual acidity, and ash element contents of the litter. The litter-dwelling invertebrate assemblage is almost completely destroyed by fire and begins to recover only after two years.
