Аннотация: To predict the future vegetation change and biomass production in Siberian "permafrost Taiga", we evaluate the temperature effects on the growth and gas exchange characteristic of dominant species of larch and spruce under the contrasting north- and south-facing slope in Tura Experiment Forest in eastern Siberia. Soil temperature at 0-5 cm depth of north-facing slope was 2-5C lower. Needle length of larch and spruce grown on north-facing slope was longer than on south-one. There was no difference in the needle density.

    Birches as sap producing species of Russia: their distribution, ecophysiological features, utilization and sap productivity

Аннотация: Four birch species are traditionally used for the sap harvesting in Russia. In the report, we discuss their spatial and ecophysiological features as well as the exudation, tapping periods and sap productivity. Biochemical constituents of the living tissues of the birches such as the wood, outer and inner bark, twigs, leaves, buds, roots, and exudated birch sap are also reviewed. We show numerous useful wooden, medicinal, tanning, coloring as well as feeding and decorative properties. Chaga - a fungi-parasite developed on the stems of the birch trees, is mentioned to be famous due to its antitumor and/or especially anti-cancer activity. It is reported that the former birch sap production closed completely at the transition to a market-economy has restarted in the Russian Far East.

Аннотация: The CO2 flux was positively correlated with soil temperature and negatively correlated with soil moisture. The CO2 flux was lowest in the Aulacomnium patch among the patches because of the low soil temperature and high soil moisture. The CO2 emission and CH4 uptake were smaller the previously reported values. The C/N ratio in soil might be an important factor explaining the low CO2 emission, and the low CH4 production may be related to the microtopography at the site.

    Short-term microbial kinetics of soil microbial respiration - A general parameter across scales

Аннотация: Microbial parameters derived from the short-term Michaelis-Menten type model are tested and applied on the ecosystem study Soil dried immediately after sampling and stored at 4 graduate C was moistened to 60% water holding capacity and CO2 production was measured (GC) after 24 h (respiration response to water supply, Vds). The glucose was added into the soil and CO2 production was measured 16 to 24 h later (maximum respiration, Vmax). Substrate saturation kinetics of respiration was measured after addition of glucose in 6 different concentrations. Soil heterotrophic respiratory potential was expressed as Vds/Vmax ratio; biologically available C (ACbr) and potential flush of the biologically available C (ACds/ACbr) was estimated using Michaelis-Menten type model. After moistening of the soils, extra C is released, the amount of which is characteristic for the given soil. Application pf the short-term kinetic approach on the upper soil layer of various ecosystems (Western Canada, Central Siberia transect).

    Biochemistry of carbon and nitrogen in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment

Аннотация: We evaluated parameters (stock and flux) carbon, nitrogen and ash element cycling in the plant-soil system. The study was performed in arolla pine, Scots pine, Siberian larch, Norway spruce, aspen and birch plantations established on Kemchug upland, Chulym-Yenisei denudational plain, in 1968-1972. Young ecosystems (age class 2) that have developed under relatively similar environmental conditions have thus accumulated different amounts of organic and mineral matter in biomass and detritus, mainly due to differences in major woody species characteristics. All ecosystems are a net atmosperic carbon sink, with a pooling rate of 1.81-4.43 t C ha -1 yr -1. The sink (NEP) is made up by C accumulation in stand biomass production, vegetation detritus, and soil humus and accounts for 46-76% of the total C allocated in annual increment; the main componentt is net C flux to biomass. The rate of N-min flux from soil pool to NPP is in fact in balance with that soil N-min accumulation in the arolla pine, larch, spruce, and birch plots. In addition, the ecosystems are characterized by a transitional cycling regime evident through non-balanced controlling organic and mineral matter stored in "plant-soil" system blocks.

Аннотация: The major parameters of the carbon cycle were studied in the pine stands of green moss and lichen proups of forest type using biometric method. The study was carried out for stands age sequence (15-260 years old) in the Zotinskii experimental polygon of Yenisei Transect. Heterotrophic respiration changes a little with age of the pine stands, therefore, net ecosystem production of these stands, in generally, mainly determines by age changes in the net primary production intensity.

Аннотация: The total environmental damage induced by pollution by smoke from wildfires is difficult to evaluate even roughly. This is partly due to insufficient data on smoke pollution, which is in turn attributed to unsufficient or even lacking estimated data composition and amounts of emissions from wildfires. Laboratory analysis of smoke producing capability (SPC), or smoke production coefficient would enable to make compilation of a comprehensive database of negative impacts smoke emission of wildfire. Our study showed that for boreal Siberian species the greatest SPC produced birch bark (Betula).

Аннотация: The complex investignation of fir-pine forest in Kuznetskii Alatau Mountains has been shown that in this region damaged forest biocenoses are dominated. The specific character of fir trees damage has been noted. The chemical analysis showd the accumulation in needle of low index biocenosis sulfates and mercury and decrease of zinc maintenance. We believe that complex character of causes of the decline has a regional specific. The plant biotecnologies for mass production genetically improved seedling of Siberian pine and fir for reforestation programs are developed.

Аннотация: The development of research into the history of tree growth and inferred summer temperature changes in Yamaha spanning the last 2000 years is reviewed. One focus is the evolving production of tree-ring width (TRW) and tree-ring maximum-latewood density (MXD) larch (Larix sibirica) chronologies, incorporating different applications of Regional Curve Standardisation (RCS). Another focus is the comparison of independent data representing past tree growth in adjacent Yamaha areas: Yamal and Polar Urals, and the examination of the evidence for common growth behaviour at different timescales. The sample data we use are far more numerous and cover a longer time-span at Yamal compared to the Polar Urals, but Yamal has only TRW, while there are both TRW and MXD for the Polar Urals. We use more data (sub-fossil and from living trees) than in previous dendroclimatic studies in this region. We develop a new TRW chronology for Yamal, more than 2000 years long and running up to 2005. For the Polar Urals we develop new TRW and MXD chronologies that show good agreement at short (<15 years) and medium (15-100 years) timescales demonstrating the validity of attempts to reconcile the evidence of longer-timescale information that they provide. We use a "conservative" application of the RCS approach (two-curve signal-free RCS), guarding against the possibility of "modern sample bias": a possible inflation of recent chronology values arising out of inadvertent selection of mostly relatively fast-growing trees in recent centuries. We also transform tree indices to have a normal distribution to remove the positive chronology skew often apparent in RCS TRW chronologies. This also reduces the apparent magnitude of 20th century tree-growth levels. There is generally good agreement between all chronologies as regards the major features of the decadal to centennial variability. Low tree-growth periods for which the inferred summer temperatures are approximately 2.5 degrees C below the 1961-90 reference are apparent in the 15-year smoothed reconstructions, centred around 1005, 1300, 1455, 1530, particularly the 1810s where the inferred cooling reaches -4 degrees C or even -6 degrees C for individual years, and the 1880s. These are superimposed on generally cool pre-20th century conditions: the long-term means of the pre-1900 reconstructed temperature anomalies range from -0.6 to -0.9 degrees C in our alternative reconstructions. There are numerous periods of one or two decades with relatively high growth (and inferred summer temperatures close to the 1961-1990 level) but at longer timescales only the 40-year period centred at 250 CE appears comparable with 20th century warmth. Although the central temperature estimate for this period is below that for the recent period, when we take into account the uncertainties we cannot be highly confident that recent warmth has exceeded the temperature of this earlier warm period. While there are clear warm decades either side of 1000 CE, neither TRW nor MXD data support the conclusion that temperatures were exceptionally high during medieval times. One previous version of the Polar Urals TRW chronology is shown here to be in error due to an injudicious application of RCS to non-homogeneous sample data, partly derived from root-collar samples that produce spuriously high chronology values in the 11th and 15th centuries. This biased chronology has been used in a number of recent studies aimed at reconstructing wider scale temperature histories. All of the chronologies we have produced here clearly show a generally high level of growth throughout their most recent 80 years. Allowing for chronology and reconstruction uncertainty, the mean of the last 100 years of the reconstruction is likely warmer than any century in the last 2000 years in this region. Аннотация: The soil formation was studied in the 21- to 35-year-old pine plantations created on the overburden dumps of the Nazarovskaya Depression without applying the material of the humus horizon. The surface technogenic formations under the pine plantations belong to the group of naturfabricats (surface formations devoid of the humus horizon and composed of natural substrate). The morphological characteristics, bulk chemical and particle-size compositions, and labile properties of the soils indicate that the accumulation and transformation of organic matter are dominant processes in the artificially planted forests. The accumulation of organic residues and destruction and humification are tightly related to the environmental conditions transformed by the technogenesis and conceal other processes forming the soil profiles. Quasizems created for agricultural production purposes were the objects of the study. They were formed by covering the technically planned overburden rocks with the material of humus layers. The thickness of the humus horizons of the quasizems varies greatly (25-64%); the variation of the humus reserves in them is 34-122%. Middle-profile horizons have not been formed by the present time.
