Net ecosystem productivity and peat accumulation in a Siberian Aapa mire
/ E. -D. Schulze, A. S. Prokushkin, E. A. Vaganov // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 531-536

Аннотация: Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was studied in a bog located in the middle taiga of Siberia using two approaches, the accumulation of peat above the hypocotyl of pine trees, and the eddy covariance flux methodology. NEP was 0.84 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using the peat accumulation method; it was 0.43-0.62 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using eddy covariance over three growing seasons. These data were compared with NEP of the surrounding forest, which was 0.6 tC +/- 1.1 hat yr(-1). The trees growing on the bog reached a total height of about 3 m and an age of 80-120 yr when peat accumulation reached 0.5-0.6 m. At that stage the growth rate of the oldest trees declined. This indicates that there is a maximum age that can be reached by trees growing on hummocks (150 yr), depending on conditions. The data show that the determination of NEP in bogs by using the peat accumulation above the hypocotyl is a useful method which can be applied on a wide range of bog types, but it may systematically overestimate NEP. The total sink capacity for carbon assimilation of bogs is comparable to that of forest, although methane emissions and losses of dissolved organic carbon must be taken into account when assessing the regional carbon cycle.

Interannual and seasonal variations of energy and water vapour fluxes above a Pinus sylvestris forest in the Siberian middle taiga
/ N.M. Tchebakova et al, O. Shibistova // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 537-551

Аннотация: Long-term eddy covariance measurements of energy and water fluxes and associated climatic parameters were carried out above a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forest in the middle taiga zone of Central Siberia. Data from June 1998 through October 2000 are presented. With the exception of winter 1998/1999, data collection over this period were more or less continuous. A distinct seasonality in surface energy exchange characteristics was observed in all years. In early spring in the absence of physiological activity by the vegetation, about 80% of the net radiation was partitioned for sensible heat, resulting in Bowen ratios, beta, as high as 8. In the 1-2 wk period associated with onset of photosynthesis in spring, evaporation rates increased rapidly and beta rapidly dropped. However, even during summer months, sensible heat fluxes typically exceeded latent heat fluxes and beta remained above 2.0. Observed daily evaporation rates varied between 0.5-1.0 mm d(-1) in spring and autumn and 1.5-2 mm d(-1) in midsummer. The overall average for the three growing seasons examined was 1.25 mm d(-1). Precipitation was on average 230 mm for the growing period, with evaporation over the same time being about 190 mm for both 1999 and 2000. This represented only about 35% of the equilibrium evaporation rate. There was typically a positive hydrological balance of 40 mm for the growing season as a whole. However, in all three years examined, evaporation exceeded precipitation totals by 20-40 mm in at least one calendar month during summer. During the growing season, daily averaged surface conductances varied between 0.15 and 0.20 mol m(-2) s(-1) (3-4.5 mm s(-1)) in dry or cool months and 0.30-0.35 mol m(-2) s(-1) (6.5-8 mm s(-1)) in moist and warm months. Despite a negative hydrological balance during midsummer, there was little evidence for reduced canopy conductances in response to soil water deficits. This may have been the consequence of roots accessing water from within or just above a perched water table, located at about 2 m depth.

Аннотация: Terrestrial flux of DOC to stream is contributed from different sources of different qualities and quantities differing at different hydrological phases and seasons. To trace the share of every one of these fluxes is still required for further understanding of DOC production and mobilization in the permafrost affected ecosystem.

Height increments and suevival of Pinus sylvestris climatypes in provenance trials in the western Trans- Baikal region
: материалы временных коллективов / T. N. Novikova // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 11-2. - С. 73-79. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Scots pine provenance trials established in Buryatia (western Trans-Baikal region) in Siberia were studied. The features of linear increment of 57 progeniers representing a significant part of the total Scots pine area in Russia are shown. Interpopulation variability in Scots pine progenies' linear increment index was found to increase in provenances during optimal moisture conditions during growing seasons. The correlation coefficients, between the linear incremewnt idexes and the climatype survival rate, showed a mostly positive link based on the contrast in conditions of the originating material populations.

Аннотация: Problem of wildfires has not been resolved anywhere in the world. Mere increase of technical power does not lead to desirable results. Forests of developed countries burn as actively as those in Africa or in Russia. The main reasons of wildfire problem are as follows: (1) Constant wandering of dry seasons over the planet causing outbreaks of wildfires. (2) Unpredicted self-development of ordinary wildfires into awful fire disasters. (3) Difficulties in delivery and use of heavy machines on hardly accessible territories. (4) Absence of a perfect technique for economic evaluation of how effectively the wildfire control system works. (5) Absence of the system of payments encouraging wildfire fighters. To solve the problem of wildfires in Russia it is necessary to: (1) Create the Russian wildfire behaviour and fire effects prediction system on the basis of the developed classification of vegetation fuels and methods of their mapping as well as maximum utilization of forest inventory information and Geographic Information System (GIS). (2) Elaborate a technique of proper wildfire monitoring including estimation of vegetation damage. (3) Improve daily rating of regional fire danger. (4) Improve fire-preventive arrangement of the territory covered by vegetation, the main goal being creation of favourable conditions for active fire management. (5) Choose the main direction in elaboration of fire-fighting means and methods taking into account their universality, simplicity, reliability, etc. (6) Elaborate an improved technique for estimation of economic effectiveness of the wildfire control system. (7) Develop international cooperation of scientists and professionals in fire management.

Seasonal development of phloem in Siberian larch stems

Аннотация: The seasonal development of phloem in the stems of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ldb.) was studied over two seasons on 50-60-year-old trees growing in a natural stand in the Siberian forest-steppe zone. Trees at the age of 20-25 years were used to study metabolites in differentiating and mature phloem elements, cambial zone, and radially growing xylem cells in the periods of early and late wood formation. The development of the current-year phloem in the stems of 50-60-year-old trees started, depending on climatic conditions, in the second-third decades of May, 10-20 days before the xylem formation, and ended together with the shoot growth cessation in late July. Monitoring of the seasonal activity of cambium producing phloem sieve cells and the duration of their differentiation compared to the xylem derivatives in the cambium demonstrated that the top production of phloem and xylem cells could coincide or not coincide during the season, while their differentiation activity was always in antiphase. Sieve cells in the early phloem are separated from those in the late phloem by a layer of tannin-containing cells, which are formed in the period when late xylem formation starts. The starch content in the structural elements of phloem depends on the state of annual xylem layer development. The content of low molecular weight carbohydrates, amino acids, organic acids, and phenols in phloem cells, cambial zone, and xylem derivatives of the cambium depends on the cell type and developmental stage as well as on the type of forming wood (early or late) differing by the cell wall parameters and, hence, by the requirement for assimilates. Significant differences in the dynamics of substances per dry weight and cell were observed during cell development.

Source- and substrate-specific export of dissolved organic matter from permafrost-dominated forested watershed in central Siberia

Аннотация: Terrestrial and aquatic dissolved organic matter (DOM) was characterized to trace the likely processes of DOM formation and stream export in a permafrost-dominated watershed in central Siberia. Stream samples were collected in spring (May-June 2003) and summer (July-August 2003) at both low flow and stormflow. Dissolved organic matter was analyzed by pyrolysis/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and identified pyrolysis products were simultaneously analyzed for compound-specific isotope ratios by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Pyrograms of terrestrial and stream DOM contained a similar series of pyrolysis products, suggesting a terrestrial origin for DOM in the small stream draining our study catchment. However, despite the overall similarity of chemical composition of stream DOM at different seasons, we also observed distinct differences in isotopic fingerprint between seasons and hydrologic phases ( stormflow versus low flow). This variation appears to be due to the changing origin of stream DOM from different soil layers and the catchment sources following permafrost thawing during the frost-free period. In general, chemical and isotopic composition of stream DOM was similar to DOM produced in soils of colder north facing slopes ( P 0.01) with a shallow active layer. South facing slopes with deeper active layers produce little DOM that enters the stream, suggesting that DOM produced in the active layer is retained and stabilized in underlying, unfrozen mineral soils. Climate change that results in additional seasonal thawing of permafrost-dominated landscapes will decrease the amount of DOM exported to riverine systems and change its chemical composition.

Аннотация: For about three decades, there have been many predictions of the potential ecological response in boreal regions to the currently warmer conditions. In essence, a widespread, naturally occurring experiment has been conducted over time. In this paper, we describe previously modeled predictions of ecological change in boreal Alaska, Canada and Russia, and then we investigate potential evidence of current climate-induced change. For instance, ecological models have suggested that warming will induce the northern and upslope migration of the treeline and an alteration in the current mosaic structure of boreal forests. We present evidence of the migration of keystone ecosystems in the upland and lowland treeline of mountainous regions across southern Siberia. Ecological models have also predicted a moisture-stress-related dieback in white spruce trees in Alaska, and current investigations show that as temperatures increase, white spruce tree growth is declining. Additionally, it was suggested that increases in infestation and wildfire disturbance would be catalysts that precipitate the alteration of the current mosaic forest composition. In Siberia, 7 of the last 9 yr have resulted in extreme fire seasons, and extreme fire years have also been more frequent in both Alaska and Canada. In addition, Alaska has experienced extreme and geographically expansive multi-year outbreaks of the spruce beetle, which had been previously limited by the cold, moist environment. We suggest that there is substantial evidence throughout the circumboreal region to conclude that the biosphere within the boreal terrestrial environment has already responded to the transient effects of climate change. Additionally, temperature increases and warming-induced change are progressing faster than had been predicted in some regions, suggesting a potential non-linear rapid response to changes in climate, as opposed to the predicted slow linear response to climate change. Аннотация: Experimental data are analyzed that concern the effect of zoogenic debris on the properties of soddy deep podzolic soils and raw-humus brown soils characteristic of southern taiga forests in the Yenisei region of Siberia. It is shown that the influence of excrements of Siberian moth larvae on the soil microflora lasts for two or, at most, three growing seasons. Zoogenic plant debris failing on the ground surface during tree stand defoliation is a short-acting but powerful stimulant of biological activity in the litter; hence, it has a considerable effect on soil properties. This effect is enhanced by changes in ecological conditions that occur upon defoliation. The influence of the cenotic factor on biogenic soil properties is manifested more strongly in the organogenic horizons. The communities of microorganisms involved in the nitrogen and carbon cycles are dominated by prototrophic forms in the normal fir forest and by pedotrophic forms in the forest defoliated by pests.

Growth and annual ring structure of Larix sibirica grown at different carbon dioxide concentrations and nutrient supply rates

Аннотация: We compared effects of ambient (360 vpm) and elevated (720 vpm) carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]) and high and low nutrient supply rates on stem growth, annual ring structure and tracheid anatomy of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) seedlings over two growing seasons. Elevated [CO(2)] had no significant effect on either stem height or diameter growth; however, both stem height and diameter growth were enhanced by the high nutrient supply rate, and these increases were stimulated by elevated [CO(2)]. Elevated [CO(2)] tended to increase the width of the annual xylem ring, the number of cells in a radial file spanning the ring, and tracheid lumen diameter, whereas it tended to reduce cell wall thickness, although there were no statistically significant CO(2) effects on tracheid anatomy. Changes in tracheid cell morphology seemed to be dependent on changes in shoot elongation rates.

Аннотация: Water solutions of fluorine and sulfur-containing salts of sodium-NaF, Na(2)SO(3), and NaF + Na(2)SO(3) (30, 150, and 300 MPC, respectively)-and salts of heavy metals-(Cu(NO(3))(2) center dot 3H(2)O, NiSO(4), and Pb(NO(3))(2) (10, 25, and 50 MPC, respectively)-were applied as pollutants to dark gray forest soils of experimental plots (1 m(2)) in Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) plantations once per growing period. The soil samples for the determination of the microbial biomass, respiration, and enzymatic activity (urease, protease, invertase, and catalase) were taken from the mineral soil layer (0-5 cm) at the beginning of the growing seasons before the application of the pollutants then in 14- to 18-day intervals every month. The fluorine and sulfur-containing compounds applied activated the respiration, lowered the enzymatic activity of the microorganisms, and decreased the microbial biomass by 1.3-2.2 times in the soils of the test plots as compared to the control one. The single application of Cu, Ni, and Pb increased the microbial biomass, while the changes in the basal respiration were compatible with its natural variability. Two months after the beginning of the experiment, all the parameters characterizing the functioning of the soil microbocenoses were restored.

Аннотация: Leaf quality of the mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa) for herbivores was studied at several hierarchical levels: among trees, among ramets within trees, among branches within ramets, and among short shoots within branches. The experimental units at each level were chosen randomly. The indices of leaf quality were the growth rate of the larvae of a geometrid, Epirrita autumnata, and certain biochemical traits of the leaves (total phenolics and individual phenolic compounds, total carbohydrates and individual sugars, free and protein-bound amino acids). We also discuss relationships between larval growth rate and biochemical foliage traits. Larval growth rates during two successive years correlated positively at the level of tree, the ramet, and the branch, indicating that the relationships in leaf quality remained constant between seasons both among and within trees. The distribution of variation at different hierarchical levels depended on the trait in question. In the case of larval growth rate, ramets and short shoots accounted for most of the explained variation. In the case of biochemical compounds, trees accounted for most of the variance in the content of total phenolics and individual low-molecular-weight phenolics. In the content of carbohydrates (total carbohydrates, starch, fructose, glucose, and sucrose) and amino acids, variation among branches was generally larger than variation among trees. Variation among ramets was low for most compounds. No single leaf trait played a paramount role in larval growth. Secondary compounds, represented by phenolic compounds, or primary metabolites, particularly sugars, may both be important in determining the suitability of birch leaves for larvae. If phenols are causally more important, genet-specific analyses of foliage chemistry are needed. If sugars are of primary importance, within-genet sampling and analysis of foliage chemistry are necessary.

Long-term measurements of aerosol and carbon monoxide at the ZOTTO tall tower to characterize polluted and pristine air in the Siberian taiga
/ X. Chi [et al.] // Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. - 2013. - Vol. 13, Is. 24. - P12271-12298, DOI 10.5194/acp-13-12271-2013 . - ISSN 1680-7316

Аннотация: Siberia is one of few continental regions in the Northern Hemisphere where the atmosphere may sometimes approach pristine background conditions. We present the time series of aerosol and carbon monoxide (CO) measurements between September 2006 and December 2011 at the Zotino Tall Tower Observatory (ZOTTO) in Central Siberia (61° N; 89° E). We investigate the seasonal, weekly and diurnal variations of aerosol properties (including absorption and scattering coefficients and derived parameters, such as equivalent black carbon (BC e), Angstrom exponent, single scattering albedo, and backscattering ratio) and the CO mixing ratios. Criteria were established to distinguish polluted from near-pristine air masses, providing quantitative characteristics for each type. Depending on the season, 23-36% of the sampling time at ZOTTO was found to be representative of a clean atmosphere. The summer pristine data indicate that primary biogenic and secondary organic aerosol formation are quite strong particle sources in the Siberian taiga. The summer seasons 2007-2008 were dominated by an Aitken mode around 80 nm size, whereas the summer 2009 with prevailing easterly winds produced particles in the accumulation mode around 200 nm size. We found these differences to be mainly related to air temperature, through its effect on the production rates of biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOC) precursor gases. In winter, the particle size distribution peaked at 160 nm, and the footprint of clean background air was characteristic for aged particles from anthropogenic sources at great distances from ZOTTO and diluted biofuel burning emissions from domestic heating. The wintertime polluted air originates mainly from large cities south and southwest of the site; these particles have a dominant mode around 100 nm, and the ?BCe/?CO ratio of 7-11 ng m -3 ppb-1 suggests dominant contributions from coal and biofuel burning for heating. During summer, anthropogenic emissions are the dominant contributor to the pollution particles at ZOTTO, while only 12% of the polluted events are classified as biomass-burning-dominated, but then often associated with extremely high CO concentrations and aerosol absorption coefficients. Two biomass-burning case studies revealed different ΔBCe/?CO ratios from different fire types, with the agricultural fires in April?2008 yielding a very high ratio of 21 ng m -3 ppb-1. Overall, we find that anthropogenic sources dominate the aerosol population at ZOTTO most of the time, even during nominally clean episodes in winter, and that near-pristine conditions are encountered only in the growing season and then only episodically. © Author(s) 2013.

Dissolved organic carbon in upland forested watersheds underlain by continuous permafrost in Central Siberia

Аннотация: Hydroclimatic variability and plant species ecology cause mosaics in forested watersheds in permafrost zones. Measurements of organic matter accumulation, stock of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), DOC concentrations in litter leachates, subsurface flow, stream and seasonal and annual export were made in two contrasting slopes and valleys in the northern taiga of Central Siberia. Increased organic carbon accumulation in litter was found in poor hydroclimatic conditions of the north-facing slope and bottom valleys. In contrast, DOC contents and its export to soil were almost two-fold higher in warmer well-drained sites of the south-facing slope. The overall DOC flux to mineral soil from the beginning of June to mid-September was 17 g C m -2 in the south-facing slope sites and only 9 g C m-2 in the north-facing slope sites. DOC export was positively correlated with precipitation stimulating leaching of mobilizable organic matter. Accordingly intra-seasonal and interannual variability of the DOC fluxes was tightly coupled with water input. Meanwhile DOC export in Sphagnum and feathermoss sites showed different behavior in dry and wet years. The presence of permafrost preventing deep seepage of organic solutes results in higher stream DOC fluxes compared to permafrost-free or island permafrost regions. However, thawing of seasonally frozen soil layer during the growing season led to the decreasing concentrations of DOC in the stream from June to September. For two seasons of continuous stream water sampling (June and August-September), the riverine DOC flux constituted about 14% of DOC entering mineral soil on both slopes. The ratio of hydrologic DOC loss to NPP of larch forests of the region was estimated to be 1.1%. В© Springer 2006.

Аннотация: Studies of microsporogenesis in the Siberian larch growing in Krasnoyarsk and its suburbs have shown that meiosis starts in October. Microsporocytes winter at prophase I (leptoneme, diploneme). Reduction divisions in male generative buds are resumed and terminated in spring, in March. However, in the case of thaws during the autumn-winter period, meiotic division proceeds in the larch buds and this leads to the formation of degrading tetrads and pollen. Hence, the organic quiescence is absent in the larch in winter. It was shown that in the larch growing in the city, meiosis proceed more asynchronously than in the background tree stands. An increase of chromosomal aberrations during the reduction division was noted under the conditions of technogenic pollution.

Effects of environmental factors on wood formation in Scots pine stems
/ G. F. Antonova, V. V. Stasova // Trees. - 1993. - Vol. 7, Is. 4. - P214-219, DOI 10.1007/BF00202076 . - ISSN 0931-1890
Аннотация: To find the optimal conditions for growth and development of tracheid walls in Scots pine stems the effects of temperature and precipitation on xylem cell production by the cambium, radial cell expansion and secondary wall thickening have been studied. The observations were carried out on 10 specially chosen 50 to 60-year-old trees, growing in central Siberia, over 2 seasons. The data on the number of cells in differentiation zones and mature xylem along radial rows of tracheids, radial and tangential sizes of tracheids and their lumens were used for calculating cambial activity, the rates and durations of cell development in the zones, and both the thickness and cross sectional areas of tracheid walls. The mean day, mean maximal diurnal and mean minimal nocturnal temperatures have been shown by correlation and regression analyses to affect differentially separate stages of cytogenesis. The temperature influenced the initial division the side of xylem and radial cell expansion mainly in May-June, while the influence of precipitation increased in July-August. Throughout all seasons it was the temperature that had the main influence on the biomass accumulation in cell walls. Optimal values of temperature and precipitation for cell production by cambium, radial cell expansion and secondary wall thickening have been calculated. The data are discussed in connection with productivity and quality of wood. В© 1993 Springer-Verlag.

Magnesium isotopes in permafrost-dominated Central Siberian larch forest watersheds

Аннотация: To unravel the Mg isotope fractionation pathways within the continuous permafrost zone in the larch deciduous forest of Central Siberia, we measured the Mg isotopic composition of two large Siberian rivers (Nizhnaya Tunguska and Kochechum, which flow into the Yenisey), a small forested stream, and the major fluid and solid sources of Mg in the watershed: atmospheric precipitates, surface suprapermafrost flow, interstitial soil solutions, plant biomass, litter and mineral soils. The obtained results indicate a significant seasonal variation in riverine water Mg isotope signatures. During the winter baseflow, the Mg isotope composition of large rivers is significantly lighter than the source basaltic rocks and the atmospheric depositions. These differences support the presence of fluids enriched in lighter Mg isotopes, such as those affected by the mineral precipitation of secondary silicates or fluids that dissolve sedimentary carbonate rocks. During the spring flood and in the summer and fall seasons, the river fluid ?26Mg values increased by 0.2-0.3‰ and approached the Mg isotope composition of the ground vegetation (dwarf shrubs, mosses) and the soil organic horizon. Overall, the riverine waters were 0.3-0.7‰ lighter than the unaltered bedrock and the deep minerals soil horizons. The Mg isotopic compositions of Larix gmelinii organs (i.e., stem wood, roots and needles) exhibit a low variability. However, an enrichment of 0.2-0.3‰ in the ?26Mg of larch needles in the course of the growing season, from June to September can be observed. This enrichment most likely demonstrates uptake of isotopically heavier Mg by the plant in addition to the progressive thawing of the mineral soil (deepening of the active layer of the soil). Overall, the Mg isotope approach indicates the important contribution of vegetation (larch needles, mosses and dwarf shrubs) to the riverine Mg isotope signature and helps to reveal the contribution of isotopically light carbonate rocks in the large rivers of the Central Siberian Plateau.
