Genetic and environmental signals in tree rings from different provenances of PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. planted in the southern taiga, Central Siberia
/ Y. Savva, F. Schweingruber, L. I. Milyutin, E. Vaganov // Trees. Structure and Function. - 2002. - Vol. 16, № 4-5. - С. 313-324

Аннотация: Seeds of Scots pine provenances originating from all over Russia were planted in the Boguchany provenance trial at a central Siberian location (southern taiga) in 1974. Eight tree-ring density and width parameters for 16 different provenances were measured with densitometric techniques. The tree-ring data were recorded from 1982 to 1996. Correlation analysis calculated by raw series showed that tree-ring width decreases and percentage of latewood increases with an increase in the latitude of the seed source. High variability was found for raw tree-ring characteristics from tree to tree within each provenance for an observed period (individual variability). The age trend of each tree is well described by the chosen fitting curve, and is similar for the mean series of each provenance. As a consequence of these findings, the indexed chronology for each provenance mainly shows climatic signals. The SD of the indexed chronology (chronological variability) is low for each provenance, showing low sensitivity to climatic influences. A cluster analysis of provenances represented by tree-ring characteristics differentiated the provenances into three groups. However, the statistical distance between the groups was minor. So we can confirm that Scots pine provenances are highly adaptable to local ecological conditions and regional climatic influences.

The conservation and quality of Gmelin larch seeds in cryolithic zone of Central Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / A. P. Abaimov [и др.] // Proceedings of the eighth symposium on the joint Siberian permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1999. - Onogawa : National Institute for Environmental Studies, 2000. - С. 3-9. - рус. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The obtained experimental data testify that even in the case of stands mortality as a result of ground fires it is right to count on quite successful natural regeneration of Gmelin larch on burned areas. It is right to consider genetically conditioned ability of Larix gmelini to conserve a part of quality seeds in ripe cones for 3-4 years as an adaptive reaction of the species to periodical wildfire impacts which are the main destabilizing factor in high latitudes of real zone in Eurasia.

Experiment of intraspecific hybridization of Siberian stone pine (Pinus Sibirica Du Tour) clones in Middle Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / G. V. Kuznetsova // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 11-2. - С. 81-87. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Experiments in intraspecific hybridization of Siberian stone pine, not just of this species but of different regional origins as well, have been carried out at a clone plantation in Middle Siberia (Krasnoyars forest-steppe). Crossings were realized using the principle of ecologo-geographical remoteness of populations. Siberian stone pine clones chosen for crossing had good growth and constant reproductive ability over many years. An analysis of the characteristics of hybrid female cones (weight, linear size, number of developed scales) and seeds (number, weight, seed fullness, viability) showed the positive influence of controlled pollination with combinations of different climatypes. The study of hybrid growing climatypes, resulting from crossing of the plain and mountain populations, also revealed signs of heterosis.

Аннотация: The sowing qualities of the seeds of Abies sibirica Ledeb. from trees of I to V Kraft grades and the total content of nitrogen in the seeds were determined. The best qualities are found in the seeds taken from the middle part of the cones growing in the upper part of crowns of trees of I and II Kraft grades. The nitrogen content in the seeds varies within the range 2.7-3.46 mg/g and depends on the growth and development of the trees. The correlation between these characteristics was found to be 0.81-0.94.

Аннотация: The introduction of Trichoderma viride spores (10(8) CFU per 1 cm(2)) essentially changed the structure of micromycetes in the soils of tree nurseries in Krasnoyarsk region. During the first 20 days, in the variants with dark gray forest soils and podzolized chernozems, the total number of fungi decreased by 3-4 and 1.5 times, respectively, as compared to that in the control plots. During the intense development of the introduced microbes, the species composition of the soil fungi changed considerably. The treatment of Scots pine seeds with metabolites of Trichoderma fungi, as well as Pseudomonas and Bacillus bacteria, in the form of water suspensions, biopreparations, and dry spores promoted an increase in the yield of seedlings and improve their morphometric parameters. At the end of the growing period, the treatment with Trichoderma and the biopreparation on its basis increased these parameters, on average, by 18-70%, and the treatment with bacteria increased the same parameters by 13-15%. The application of microbial preparations improved the phytosanitary state of the soils in the studied tree nurseries. The use of the strains of indigenous microorganisms might be feasible for solving bioremediation problems more successfully in particular regions.

Pinus sibirica -- acceleration -- bud -- shoot -- morphogenesis of ovulate cone -- embryological structures

Аннотация: Morphological and cytoembryological studies of unique forms of Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) with the annual cycle of ovulate cone development were carried out. The morphogenesis of female shoots in these anomalous trees with the annual cycle of development was shown to provide for an accelerated development and very rapid growth of megastrobili and accelerated formation of reproductive structures. Cytoembryological studies of ovules in these trees showed significant shortening of the free-nuclear stage of gametophyte development (up to 3 weeks instead of one year) and ultra-early formation of archegonia and egg cells. However, no fertilization of egg cells and the development of embryos occur in the anomalous forms; the egg-cell nucleus divides in the haploid state. Developing seeds are formed without embryo. The author hypothesizes that the acceleration of embryo development in the anomalous pine trees is caused by enhanced hormonal, carbohydrate, and nitrogen metabolism in ovule tissues.

Аннотация: Radial increment and tree-ring structure were studied in the progenies of 16 climatypes growing in the southern taiga subzone. The coefficients of correlation between tree-ring parameters of the local and other climatypes were as high as 0.7-0.9, and the synchronism coefficients were higher than 0.7. Climatypes of northern origin were an exception. The sensitivity of the parameters of the tree ring late wood decreased with an increase in the latitude at which the seeds for establishing the cultures were collected. Estimation of Euclidean distances in the space of tree-ring parameters showed that the northern climatypes differed from the southern taiga types by no more than 15%. The climatypes from the middle taiga and the forest-steppe exhibited smaller differences (10-11%).

Structure of crown as well as pollen and seed viability of fir (Abies sibirica Ledeb.) in disturbed forest ecosystems of the Khamar-Daban Mts near Baikal Lake

Аннотация: Structure of crown and viability of generative organs of Siberian fir were studied in disturbed forest ecosystems near Baikal Lake. The crown structure changes in damaged trees: a zone of subapical drying appears and apical dominance is lost. Needle chlorosis and necrosis appear and proceed in sprouts of male sexualization. The tree top including the female generative organs does not show degradation symptoms during about 30 years and produces seed cones. Processes of degradation in male generative zone greatly influence on fir tree pollen. Pollen viability of fir trees varied from year to year in different trees but always pollen quality of trees growing in the Khamar-Daban Mts in the air pollution zone was more poor in comparison with the pollen of trees at die Baikal Lake shore. Tree pollen growing in the Khamar-Daban Mts germinates in vitro but pollen tubes are formed short and not viable. Seed quality of fir trees is very low, A lot of seeds are sterile. Empty seeds prevail. The formation of empty seeds was caused by the low pollen germination in ovules and as a whole absence of pollen in ovules. The high sterility of generative organs and especially of Abies sibirica pollen can limit gametic selection and decrease fir diversity in forest ecosystems near Baikal Lake.

Аннотация: The influence of optimal and contrasting temperatures on the fractional composition of proteins and respiration of germinating seeds of Gmelin larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) and Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) was revealed. The dominance of globulins (salt-soluble fraction) and insoluble proteins was noted in viable air-dry seeds of larch. Optimal and contrasting temperatures of germination of seeds caused significant changes in the content and dynamics of separate fractions of protein, the contrasting temperatures causing greater changes: increasing in the content of insoluble proteins, intense consumption of globulins at separate stages of germination. Respiration of the seeds during germination at contrasting temperatures also increased more than at an optimal temperature. Thermal regime of germination affected the character of relations between the respiration rate and contents of different protein fractions.

Аннотация: Androgenesis in vitro in plants is a phenomenon of developmental switching of male generative cells, microspores, from their normal gametophytic to sporophytic pathway. We obtained androgenic callus and embryoids (embryo-like structures derived from microspores) of the conifer plant, Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) in the in vitro culture. The immune-enzyme analysis of the hormonal balance of larch androgenic cultures showed a substantial increase in the content of all phytohormones, especially cytokinins and ABA, as compared with initial explants (microstrobiles). This was evidently related to active cell divisions and embryoid formation. A comparison of androgenic cultures derived from trees nonifested and infested with larch gall midges (Dasineura rozhkovi Main. et Nik.) revealed a cytokinin content increase (by two times) and an ABA content decrease (by two times), which indicates more intense growth of cultures derived from healthy trees. Phytohormone content in the androgenic callus was compared with their accumulation in the embryos of larch seeds harvested from noninfested trees. We concluded that successful growth of androgenic cultures and embryoid formation demand an additional medium supplement with auxins (not more than 0.5 mg/l).

Аннотация: Scots pine provenance trials were established in 1964 in forest-steppe and in 1974 in southern taiga zones of Central Siberia from seeds collected over whole Russia. Tree-ring characteristics (radial growth and density chronologies) from 12 and 16 provenances planted in those plantations were measured densitometrically. Tree-ring analysis revealed a retention of a genetically fixed response to climatic factors proper to pines' origin. Trees from higher latitudes keep the orientation towards accelerated growth at the beginning of a growing season, which is followed by a rapid transition to formation of latewood cells and deceleration of growth earlier, than in medium-latitude trees. Main climatic factors controlling tree-rings formation differed slightly between different provenances within plantations. Genetically fixed ability of the provenances are not great (less than 15%), that proves high adaptability of pines to abrupt climatic change. Tree-ring formation of Scots pine provenances is mainly determined by the environmental factors. В© Springer 2006.

Specific features of the development of Siberian stone pine megagametophytes and embryos in vitro
/ I. N. Tret'iakova, N. V. Novoselova // Ontogenez. - 2003. - Vol. 34, Is. 4. - С. 282-291 . - ISSN 0475-1450
Аннотация: Seedlings were grown in vitro from fertilized eggs and immature embryos of the Siberian stone pine. Cultivation of megagametophytes on a hormone-containing Murashige-Skoog medium from the egg formation until the globular embryo stage made it possible to manipulate fertilization and embryogenesis. Immature embryos are the most promising for in vitro cultivation. Their maturation and germination proceed within seven days of cultivation. When zygotic embryos were cultivated, adventitious buds were formed from cells at the cotyledon base and tips. When adventitious buds were subcultivated on a medium containing benzylaminopurine and naphthylacetic acid, organogenic callus and shoots were formed. Thus, cultivation of megagametophytes and embryos of the Siberian stone pine led to the completion of embryogenesis and formation of viable of seedlings.

Seed productivity of macrostrobili and the quality of seeds in Abies sibirica in disturbed forest ecosystems of the mountains of Southern Siberia

Аннотация: Seed productivity of the macrostrobile and seed quality in drying and healthy stands of the Abies slbirica growing in the mountains of the Southern Siberia - Khamar-Daban and Western and Eastern Sayany - were studied. It was established that under any growing conditions of fir, the seed productivity of its macrostrobile is very high, but the quality of the seeds produced is very low. In high mountains, where an intensive drying of fir forests takes place, seed sterilization increases. Most of the sterile seeds are hollow, which is connected with the low pollen quality. It is concluded that in Abies sibirica growing in the mountains of Southern Siberia, the reproductive potential of the species drops. It is assumed that formation of sterile seeds in a fir may cause the lack of forest-forming processes in fir forests. В© 1996 MAHK Hayka/Interperiodica Publishing.

Аннотация: By means of electrophoresis followed by histochemical staining, water-soluble enzymes of megagametophytes and embryos of seeds collected from 42 trees in two natural populations of Picea obovata were studied. A detailed analysis of electrophoretic patterns of enzymes ADH, GDH, 6-PGD, IDH, MDH, LAP, EST, and GOT is presented. It is shown that the allozyme diversity of the enzymes assayed is coded for by at least 20 loci. Fine electrophoretic resolution was obtained for the products of 16 loci, four of them (Mdh-1, Mdh-2, Got-1, and Got-2) were monomorphic, while the remaining loci (Adh-1, Adh-2, 6-Pgd-2, 6-Pgd-3, Mdh-3, Idh-2, Lap-1, Lap-2, Est-1, Est-3, Got-3 and Gdh) appeared polymorphic. Segregation data confirms the monogenic inheritance of the allozyme variants revealed.
