Climatic control of stand thinning in unmanaged spruce forests of the southern taiga in European Russia
/ N.N. Vygodskaya, E.-D. Schulze, N.M. Tchebakova et al // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 443-461

Аннотация: The demography of Picea abies trees was studied over a period of about 30 yr on permanent plots in six forest types of an unmanaged forest located in a forest reserve of the Southern Taiga, NW of Moscow. This study encompassed a broad range of conditions that are typical for old growth spruce forests in the boreal region, including sites with a high water table and well drained sites, podzolic soils, acidic soils and organic soils. At all sites stand density, tree height, breast height diameter and age has been periodically recorded since 1968. Tree density ranged between 178 and 1035 trees ha(-1) for spruce and between 232 and 1168 trees ha-1 for the whole stand, including mainly Betula and Populus. Biomass ranged between 5.4 and 170 t(dw) ha(-1) for spruce and between 33 to 198 td, ha(-1) for the whole stand. Averaged over a long period of time, biomass did not change with stand density according to the self-thinning rule. in fact, on most sites biomass remained almost constant in the long term, while stand density decreased. The study demonstrates that the loss of living trees was not regulated by competitive interactions between trees, but by disturbances caused by climatic events. Dry years caused losses of minor and younger trees without affecting biomass. In contrast, periodic storms resulted in a loss of biomass without affecting density, except for extreme events, where the whole stand may fall. Dry years followed by wet years enhance the effect on stand density. Since mainly younger trees were lost, the apparent average age of the stand increased more than real time (20% for Picea). Average mortality was 2.8 +/- 0.5% yr(-1) for spruce. Thus, the forest is turned over once every 160-180 yr by disturbances. The demography of dead trees shows that the rate of decay depends on the way the tree died. Storm causes uprooting and stem breakage, where living trees fall to the forest floor and decay with a mean residence time (t(1/2)) of about 16 yr (decomposition rate constant k(d) = 0.042 yr(-1)). This contrasts with trees that die by drought or insect damage, and which remain as standing dead trees with a mean residence time of 3-13 yr until they are brought to ground, mainly by wind. These standing dead trees require an additional mean residence time of about 22 yr for decay on the ground (k(d) = 0.031). In conclusion, we demonstrate that, rather than competitive interactions, it is climate extremes, namely drought, rapid changes of dry years followed by wet years, and storm that determine stand structure, biomass and density, which then affect the net exchange with the atmosphere. The climatic effects are difficult to predict, because the sensitivity of a stand to climate extremes depends on the past history. This may range from no effect, if the stand was recovering from an earlier drought and exhibited a relatively low density, to a total collapse of canopies, if drought reduces stand density to an extent that other climatic extremes (especially wind) may cause further damage.

Net ecosystem productivity and peat accumulation in a Siberian Aapa mire
/ E. -D. Schulze, A. S. Prokushkin, E. A. Vaganov // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 531-536

Аннотация: Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was studied in a bog located in the middle taiga of Siberia using two approaches, the accumulation of peat above the hypocotyl of pine trees, and the eddy covariance flux methodology. NEP was 0.84 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using the peat accumulation method; it was 0.43-0.62 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using eddy covariance over three growing seasons. These data were compared with NEP of the surrounding forest, which was 0.6 tC +/- 1.1 hat yr(-1). The trees growing on the bog reached a total height of about 3 m and an age of 80-120 yr when peat accumulation reached 0.5-0.6 m. At that stage the growth rate of the oldest trees declined. This indicates that there is a maximum age that can be reached by trees growing on hummocks (150 yr), depending on conditions. The data show that the determination of NEP in bogs by using the peat accumulation above the hypocotyl is a useful method which can be applied on a wide range of bog types, but it may systematically overestimate NEP. The total sink capacity for carbon assimilation of bogs is comparable to that of forest, although methane emissions and losses of dissolved organic carbon must be taken into account when assessing the regional carbon cycle.

Seasonal and spatial variability in soil CO2 efflux rates for a central Siberian Pinus sylvestris forest
/ O. Shibistova et al, S. Efgrafova, G. Zrazhevskaya // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 552-567

Аннотация: Rates of CO2 efflux from the floor of a central Siberian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) forest were measured using a dynamic closed chamber system and by a eddy covariance system placed 2.5 m above the forest floor. Measurements were undertaken for a full growing season: from early May to early October 1999. Spatial variability as determined by the chamber measurements showed the rate of CO2 efflux to depend on location, with rates from relatively open areas ("glades") only being about 50% those observed below or around trees. This was despite generally higher temperatures in the glade during the day. A strong relationship between CO2 efflux rate and root density was observed in early spring, suggesting that lower rates in open areas may have been attributable to fewer roots there. Continuous measurements with the eddy covariance system provided good temporal coverage. This method, however, provided estimates of ground CO2 efflux rate rates that were about 50% lower than chamber measurements that were undertaken in areas considered to be representative of the forest as a whole. An examination of the seasonal pattern of soil CO2 efflux rates suggests that much of the variability in CO2 efflux rate could be accounted for by variations in soil temperature. Nevertheless, there were also some indications that the soil water deficits served to reduce soil CO2 efflux rates during mid-summer. Overall the sensitivity of CO2 efflux rate to temperature seems to be greater for this boreal ecosystem than has been the case for most other studies.

Genetic and environmental signals in tree rings from different provenances of PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. planted in the southern taiga, Central Siberia
/ Y. Savva, F. Schweingruber, L. I. Milyutin, E. Vaganov // Trees. Structure and Function. - 2002. - Vol. 16, № 4-5. - С. 313-324

Аннотация: Seeds of Scots pine provenances originating from all over Russia were planted in the Boguchany provenance trial at a central Siberian location (southern taiga) in 1974. Eight tree-ring density and width parameters for 16 different provenances were measured with densitometric techniques. The tree-ring data were recorded from 1982 to 1996. Correlation analysis calculated by raw series showed that tree-ring width decreases and percentage of latewood increases with an increase in the latitude of the seed source. High variability was found for raw tree-ring characteristics from tree to tree within each provenance for an observed period (individual variability). The age trend of each tree is well described by the chosen fitting curve, and is similar for the mean series of each provenance. As a consequence of these findings, the indexed chronology for each provenance mainly shows climatic signals. The SD of the indexed chronology (chronological variability) is low for each provenance, showing low sensitivity to climatic influences. A cluster analysis of provenances represented by tree-ring characteristics differentiated the provenances into three groups. However, the statistical distance between the groups was minor. So we can confirm that Scots pine provenances are highly adaptable to local ecological conditions and regional climatic influences.

Reconstructing past stand density in even-aged Larix gmelinii monocultures: comparison of three approaches
: материалы временных коллективов / A. Osawa, A. P. Abaimov, O. A. Zyryanova // Proceedings of the seventh Symposium on the joint Seberian Permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1998. - Sapporo : Hokkaido University. - С. 21-24. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Three methods were compared for reconstructing stand densisty in the past of a naturally growing Larix gmelinii forest in central Siberia. The first method assumed that the stand has been developing along the self-thinning line. The second approach used structutal characteristics of trees in the stand. The third method estimated stand density by aging every dead stem that was present at the time of the study. We suggest that the third approach is most accurate, and current knowledge of the self-thinning relatioship is unsufficient for this species.

Аннотация: Four birch species are traditionally used for the sap harvesting in Russia. In the report, we discuss their spatial and ecophysiological features as well as the exudation, tapping periods and sap productivity. Biochemical constituents of the living tissues of the birches such as the wood, outer and inner bark, twigs, leaves, buds, roots, and exudated birch sap are also reviewed. We show numerous useful wooden, medicinal, tanning, coloring as well as feeding and decorative properties. Chaga - a fungi-parasite developed on the stems of the birch trees, is mentioned to be famous due to its antitumor and/or especially anti-cancer activity. It is reported that the former birch sap production closed completely at the transition to a market-economy has restarted in the Russian Far East.

The influence of stand density on growth of three conifer species
: материалы временных коллективов / R. S. Sobachkin, D. S. Sobachkin, A. I. Buzykin // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 247-256. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We evaluated the influence of stand density on the growth and development of monoculture plantations of Scots pine, larch and Norway spruce. The planting density ranged from 500 to 128,000 trees/ha. After 22 years, tree height was not affected by density, though the height of pine and larch (8m) was greater than spruce (6m). Diameter declined exponentially with increasing density, but the slope was too low to offset the contribution of more trees to the stand total basal area and stem volume. Basal area and stem volume per hectare were greatest at the most extreme density for all three species, refuting ideas of "stagnation" at high density.

Productivity of six tree species plantations for three decades in the Siberian afforestation experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / V. V. Kuzmichev, L. S. Pshenichnikova, V. A. Tretyakova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 269-280. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Measurements were made of height, diameter and number of trees in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment for monoculture plots with six tree species, established in the central part of the Krasnoyarsk region. Almost 150 felled trees were measured to evaluate aboveground biomass fractions determine biomass dynamics through stand development. Local uncertainties in needle mass dynamics were revealed for Scots and arolla pine stands. Carbon storage was evaluated for live trees and in biomass of dead trees and fall of branches and needles. Over the 35 years of stand development, these species accumulated 100 to 300 m3/ha of wood, with a likely carbon content about 25 to 75 Mg/ha. The trees also added a large amount of C to the soil in fallen leaves, branches, and dead roots. In this region, Norway spruce and arolla pine form the longest-lived forests, and may have higher productivities than the other species later in stand development.

Interannual growth response of Norway spruce to climate along an altitudinal gradient in the Tatra Mountains, Poland

Аннотация: Ring-width chronologies of Picea abies (L.) Karst. from ten sites in the Tatra Mountains, Poland, were developed to explore growth/climate responses in stands along an altitudinal gradient ranging from 839 to 1468 m a.s.l. There were positive relationships between current-year radial growth and mean monthly temperatures in March, April, June, July, but with increasing elevation, the strength of this correlation declined for March-April and increased for June-July temperatures. The mean monthly temperature in October of the previous year positively influenced radial growth of trees at all sites. Lower mean temperatures in January negatively affected growth of trees at high-elevation sites. Trees at the low-elevation sites responded positively to a warm early spring, whereas trees at high-elevation sites showed positive growth responses to higher summer temperatures.

Аннотация: Estimates of carbon (C) storage for the forest vegetation of Russia vary to a considerable extent. In this paper we describe methods of estimating C storage of forest ecosystems and present estimates of C storage in the forest vegetationb of administrative territories and ecoregion of Russia. Estimates of C storage are based on National Forest Inventory data, estimates of the phytomass of trees and other vegetation of different forest ecosystems in various ecoregions of Russia, and mapped data for natural ecoregions. The forest ecosystems of Russia (771.1 Mha) have 118.8 Pg of C with 23.6% of the total in forest vegetation, 14.1% in the countries with temperate and boreal forest ecosystems.

Separating the climatic signal from tree-ring width and maximum latewood density records
: материалы временных коллективов / // Trees. Structure and Function. - 2007. - Т. 21, № 1. - С. 37-44. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We propose a technique for separating the climatic signal which is contained in two tree-ring parameters widely used in dendroclimatology. The method is based on the removal of the relationship between tree-ring width and maximum latewood density observed for narrow tree rings from high latitudes. The new technique is tested on data from three larch stands located along the northern timberline in Eurasia. The analysis confirms the great importance of summer temperature for tree radial growth and tree -ring formation. These results are consistent with the known dynamics of tree-ring growth in high latitudes and mechanisms of tree-ring growth in high latitudes and mechanisms of tree-ring formation.
