The 6-7 aged biogroups of pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L.) with density 1, 10 and 40 tree*m-2 were investigated. It was shown that an increase in density causes a decrease in the linear and radial sizes of trees and changes dynamic and level of enzymes activity of y-aminobutyric and glutamic acids metabolism. The revealed specific change of dynamic of y-aminobutyric acid can be used as biochemical indicator of phytocenotic stress.

Changes in phenolic acids during maturation and lignification of scots pine xylem

Аннотация: The content and fractional composition of alcohol soluble phenolic acids (PhA) in cells with different degree maturation and lignification in the course of early and late wood formation in the pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stem during vegetation were studied. Phenolic compounds (PhC), extracted by 80% ethanol, were divided into free and bound fractions of PhA. In turn, the esters and ethers were isolated from bound PhA. The contents of all substances were calculated per dry weight and per cell. Considerable differences have been found to exist in both the contents and the composition of the fractions PhA on successive stages of tracheid maturation of early and late xylem. Early wood tracheids at all secondary wall thickening steps contained PhC less and free PhA more than late wood tracheids. Throughout earlywood tracheid maturation, the pool of free PhA per cell declined at the beginning of lignification and then increased gradually while that of bound PhA decreased. The maturation of late wood tracheids were accompanied by the rise of free PhA pool and the diminution of bound PhA pool. In the composition of bound PhA, the ethers were always dominant, and the amount of that in earlywood cells was less than in latewood cells. The cells of early xylem at all steps of maturation contained more of esters. The sum total of free hydroxycinnamic acids, precursors of monolignols, gradually decreased during early xylem lignification as the result of the reduction of the pools of p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic and synapic acids, while that of their esters rised. In the course of late xylem lignification, the pools of free p-coumaric, ferulic and, especially, synapic acids increased. Simultaneously, the amount of ferulic acid ester and synapic acid ether increased too. According to the data, lignin biosynthesis in early xylem and late xylem occurs with different dynamics and the structure of lignins of two xylem types might be different too.

Аннотация: The content and composition of alcohol soluble phenolic acids (PhAs) were studied during cell xylem growth in course of wood annual increment formation in the trunks of Scots pine. Cells of the cambium zone, two stages of expansion growth, and outset of secondary thickening zone (before lignification) within the period of formation of early wood xylem were subsequently isolated from trunk segments of 25-year-old trees with constant anatomical and histochemical control. The amount of free and bound forms of phenolic acids extracted from tissues by 80% ethanol, as well as their ethers and esters, were calculated both per dry weight and per cells. The substantial alteration in content, proportion of fractions and composition of acids has been found between the cambium zone and the outset of secondary thickening of tracheids, and the character of variation depended on the calculation method. The amount of free and bound PhAs and esters and especially ethers calculated per cell had increased at the first stage of extension growth, reduced at the second, and increased in the outset of secondary wall deposition. The pool of bound acids was more than acids by 2-5 times depending on the stage of development of the cells. Sinapic and ferulic acids dominate among free hydroxycinnamic acids. The composition and the content of hydroxycinnamic acids in esters and ethers also depended on the stage of development of the cells. p-Coumaric and sinapic acids were the main aglycons in ethers in the cambium and sinapic and caffeic acids were in the other stages. The esters from cambium included mostly p-coumaric acid and those at other stages of development were sinapic and ferulic acids. The esters included benzoic acid at the first stages of growth. The pool of these esters decreased from the first phase of growth until the outset of cell wall thickening. The level of free benzoic acid increased respectively.

Correlation between the morphogenetic types of litter and their properties in bog birch forests

Аннотация: A formalized arrangement of morphogenetic types of litter according to the physicochemical parameters provided their significant grouping in three genetic associations. The litter group (highly decomposed + moderately decomposed) is confined to the tall-grass group of bog birch forests. The rhizomatous (roughly decomposed) litter is formed in the sedge-reed grass bog birch forests. The litter group (peaty + peatified + peat) is associated with the bog-herbaceous-moss group of forest types. The genetic associations of the litters (a) reliably characterize the edaphic conditions of bog birch forests and (b)correspond to formation of the peat of certain ecological groups. We found highly informative the acid-base parameters, the exchangeable cations (Ca(2+) + Mg(2+)) and the total potential acidity, which differentiated the genetic associations of litter practically with 100% probability. The expediency of studying litters under groups of forest types rather than under separate types of bog birch forests was demonstrated.

Storage and mobility of black carbon in permafrost soils of the forest tundra ecotone in Northern Siberia
[Text] / G. . Guggenberger [et al.] // Glob. Change Biol. - 2008. - Vol. 14, Is. 6. - P1367-1381, DOI 10.1111/j.1365-2486.2008.01568.x. - Cited References: 72 . - 15. - ISSN 1354-1013

Аннотация: Boreal permafrost soils store large amounts of organic carbon (OC). Parts of this carbon (C) might be black carbon (BC) generated during vegetation fires. Rising temperature and permafrost degradation is expected to have different consequences for OC and BC, because BC is considered to be a refractory subfraction of soil organic matter. To get some insight into stocks, variability, and characteristics of BC in permafrost soils, we estimated the benzene polycarboxylic acid (BPCA) method-specific composition and storage of BC, i.e. BPCA-BC, in a 0.44 km(2)-sized catchment at the forest tundra ecotone in northern Siberia. Furthermore, we assessed the BPCA-BC export with the stream draining the catchment. The catchment is composed of various landscape units with south-southwest (SSW) exposed mineral soils characterized by thick active layer or lacking permafrost, north-northeast (NNE) faced mineral soils with thin active layer, and permafrost-affected raised bogs in plateau positions showing in part thermokarst formation. There were indications of vegetation fires at all landscape units. BC was ubiquitous in the catchment soils and BPCA-BC amounted to 0.6-3.0% of OC. This corresponded to a BC storage of 22-3440 g m(-2). The relative contribution of BPCA-BC to OC, as well as the absolute stocks of BPCA-BC were largest in the intact bogs with a shallow active layer followed by mineral soils of the NNE aspects. In both landscape units, a large proportion of BPCA-BC was stored within the permafrost. In contrast, mineral soils with thick active layer or lacking permafrost and organic soils subjected to thermokarst formation stored less BPCA-BC. Permafrost is, hence, not only a crucial factor in the storage of OC but also of BC. In the stream water BPCA-BC amounted on an average to 3.9% of OC, and a yearly export of 0.10 g BPCA-BC m(-2) was calculated, most of it occurring during the period of snow melt with dominance of surface flow. This suggests that BC mobility in dissolved and colloidal phase is an important pathway of BC export from the catchment. Such a transport mechanism may explain the high BC concentrations found in sediments of the Arctic Ocean.

Аннотация: Somatic embryogenesis was induced in Siberian larch by in vitro culturing zygotic embryos at different developmental stages. Cultures were grown in modified Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with hormones 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2 mg/l) and 6-benzylaminopurine (0.5-1 mg/l). The success of somatic embryogenesis in this species depended on the tree genotype and developmental stage of embryos used for culturing. Somatic embryogenesis from immature zygotic embryos at the stage of cotyledon initiation was most active. After 5-10 days, such embryos formed the embryogenic tissue including two cell types-elongated highly vacuolated embryonic tubes and small embryonic cells. Somatic embryos were isolated from proliferating embryogenic tissues after 2 months of culture.

Аннотация: The distribution of different ecological groups of lichens (acidophytes, 'nitrophytes', indifferent species) was compared on 1-24 year-old twigs of Abies sibirica sampled in the 'pristine' West Sayan and the polluted East Sayan Mountains (Krasnoyarsk District, South Siberia, Russia) to test their value as indicators of current pollution effects. Bark pH of twigs and bark chemistry (N, S, Ca, Mg, Al, Fe) were measured, and a preliminary estimate of emissions in the Krasnoyarsk District from livestock animal populations was calculated. In both regions, an unusually high twig bark pH and an abnormal species composition for A. sibirica canopy were found (e.g. Physcia aipolia, P. dubia, P. tenella, Phaeophyscia sp., Melanelia exasperatula and Candelariella vitellina), with P. tenella (East Sayan) and M. exasperatula (West Sayan) as dominants. The results confirm that the distribution of lichen species on Abies sibirica twigs is a valuable indicator of current changes in atmospheric conditions.

Аннотация: The specificity of the group and fraction composition of the organic matter in peat soils drained to a different extent that have developed for a 20-to 25-year period of hydro-and forest amelioration was characterized using the methods of multidimensional statistics. The differences in the organic matter of the soils studied are mainly determined by the contents of humic and fulvic acid of fractions 1 and 3, as well as of hemicelluloses and cellulose. The degree and depth of the humification are inversely related to the soil moisture and directly related to the peroxidase activity.

Аннотация: The contents of ascorbic acid (AA) and its oxidized form, dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), were assessed as related to the tracheid differentiation in the course of early and late wood development in the Siberianlarch (Larix sibirica Ldb.) trees. The samples of the cambium, cell enlargement zone and mature cells were collected at the successive developmental stages by scraping tissues off layer by layer from trunk segments of the 20-year-old trees according to anatomical and histochemical criteria. While cambium initials were rapidly dividing, the AA contents per dry weight and per cell considerably exceeded the corresponding values characteristic of the late xylem development; such difference corresponded to the higher number of early tracheids per annual ring, as compared to the late tracheids. The AA content decreased as cells enlarged. The radial growth of the early wood tracheids, as compared to the late wood tracheids, was accompanied with a threefold increase in the AA and a decline in the DHA contents. The AA/DHA ratio was in line with the early tracheid enlargement. The maximum AA content was observed at the early stage of the secondary cell wall thickening in the tracheids of early and late xylem preceding lignification. During this stage of early wood development, the DHA content exceeded sixfold the corresponding value in the late xylem; as a result, the initial rates of lignification were different in two tissues. The rate of lignification in a newly developing layer of the early xylem increased gradually and was the highest in the completely differentiated tracheids. In the late xylem, the lignification rate was at its highest at the very beginning and then declined in the course of tracheid maturation. The dissimilar patterns of lignification in the early and late xylem were primarily associated with the DHA content, which increased in the early xylem and decreased in the maturing late xylem. Thus, the AA content and its accessibility to oxidation in the growing and mature xylem cells exhibited the diverse developmental patterns in the early and late xylem: two tissues differed in the tracheid number and radial diameter as well as in the rate of lignification.

Аннотация: Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) callus culture was treated with the mycelium extracts from six Fusarium strains. Previously, pine seedlings were infected with a spore suspension in order to test the pathogenicity of the used strains. Callus culture infection resulted in a decrease in the free proanthocyanidin (PA) and an increase in bound PA content. After treating the calli with all strains except F. oxysporum var. orthoceras, the lignin content became lower than the control one. The most considerable changes involved the p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) content, and its greatest change was observed after treating the calli with F. nivale, when the HBA concentration (1229 mug/g, dry wt) exceeded fourfold the control one. There was a positive correlation (R = 0.81) between the HBA content in the callus culture cells treated with a fungal extract and the virulence of Fusarium strains. At the same time, there was an inverse correlation (R = -0.80) between the lignin content in a callus culture and the fungal virulence; the latter did not affect the contents of both free and bound PA.

Аннотация: Twelve-day-old seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were infected with a virulent spore suspension of the fungus Fusarium sporotrichiella var. sporotrichioides Bilai. 72 h after infection, the seedlings were divided into infection-susceptible and infection-resistant ones, and phenolic compounds in the seedling hypocotyls were analyzed. Susceptible seedlings contained 4.3-fold less lignins, 1.4-fold less free and bound proanthocyanidins, 12.7-fold less free hydroxybenzoic acids, 56.6-fold less bound hydroxybenzoic acids, 2-fold less quinic acid, and 5.1-fold less shikimic acid as compared to the resistant seedlings. At the same time, L-phenylalanine content was increased 3-fold and that of L-tyrosine, 1.3-fold. The activity of quinate:NAD(P)(+) oxidoreductase and L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase in the hypocotyls of susceptible seedlings was 2.3-fold and 1.4-fold lower, respectively, whereas the activity of shikimate:NAD(P)(+) oxidoreductase remained unchanged.

Аннотация: Efficient syntheses of (ZE)-5,7-dodecadienol, a pheromone component of the Siberian moth, Dendrolimus superans sibiricus, and (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienol, a pheromone component of various Lepidoptera pheromones, were accomplished by cis reduction of the corresponding enynols with activated zinc. The most energetic reagent was zinc galvanized with copper and silver (Zn/Cu/Ag) that achieved rapid and high-yield reduction in methanol-water. The stereoselectivity of semihydrogenation was greater than or equal to98%. A process whereby zinc dust was continuously activated throughout the reduction with an acid was also satisfactory (95-98% cis). Field evaluation of the 1:1 mixture of (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienol and (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienal with the Siberian moth in Russia showed that the rubber septa pretreated with compound and stored at -80 degreesC were as effective as freshly treated septa. Moth responses to septa aged in open air indicated that lure effectiveness declined significantly after 2 weeks of aging. Thus, if rubber septa are used as pheromone dispensers in Siberian moth traps monitoring, they should be replaced biweekly with fresh septa for optimal trap effectiveness.

Аннотация: Callus cultures of Siberian larch (Lar ix sibirica Ledeb.) and Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.) were used to demonstrate the elicitor activity of two ophiostomatoid fungal species, Ceratocystis laricicola and Ceratocystis polonica, as the pioneer settlers on larch and spruce, respectively. The extract from C. laricicola mycelium stimulated the accumulation of lignin in larch cells by 37% and that of hound proanthocyanidins by 25%. In spruce callus cultures, C. laricicola and C. polonica increased the bound PA content by 25 and 46%, respectively. In the callus cultures of larch and spruce, the addition of extract of C. laricicola increased the concentration of p-hydroxybenzoic acid 13-fold and nearly 4-fold, respectively. The metabolic characteristics of accumulation of phenolic compounds in conifer cells are discussed.

Аннотация: The impact of long-term seasonal soil freezing, drought, and waterlogging on the rhizosphere of young Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L., age class 1) has been simulated in experiments. The results have shown that cold stress exposure leads to reduction of the rates of linear and radial tree growth and of chlorophyll content in needles, a shift in the peak of starch content, and initiation of free amino acid deposition in the aboveground plant parts. Drought activates utilization of carbohydrate reserves and amino acid accumulation in the root bast, whereas soil waterlogging stimulates deposition of carbohydrates but causes a decrease in the levels of chlorophyll and amino acids in all plant tissues.

Ascorbic acid and development of xylem and phloem cells in the pine trunk
[Text] / G. F. Antonova, V. V. Stasova, T. N. Varaksina // Russ. J. Plant Physiol. - 2009. - Vol. 56, Is. 2. - P190-199, DOI 10.1134/S1021443709020071. - Cited References: 30. - This work was supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, project no. 06-04-49501. . - 10. - ISSN 1021-4437

Аннотация: Changes in the levels of ascorbic acid (AA), its oxidized form, dehydroascorbic acid (DHA), and uronic acids as initial precursors for the AA synthesis were studied as related to the degree of xylem and phloem cell development in the course of early and late wood formation in the trunks of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). The cells of mature and conducting phloem, cambial zone, differently developed cells in the zones of cell enlargement and maturation were obtained by successive scraping tissue layers from trunk segments of 20-25-year-old trees; tissue identification was checked anatomically and histochemically. The contents of compounds tested were calculated per dry weight and per cell basis. We found great differences in the contents of AA and DHA and also in their ratio in dependence of the wood type developing in the pine trunks during growth period and on the stage of differentiation of xylem and phloem cells. Changes in the AA content during xylem cell differentiation were accompanied by changes in the content of uronic acids. The amounts of AA, DHA, and uronic acids were the highest at the stage of early lignification and reduced with tracheid maturation. The AA to DHA ratio changed differently in the course of early and late xylem lignification. It reduced from the start of lignification to the formation of early mature xylem and, in contrast, increased in mature late wood; this indicates a difference in the level of redox processes in these tissues.

Аннотация: The localization of the key photoreductive and oxidative processes and some stress-protective reactions within leaves of mesophytic C(3) plants were investigated. The role of light in determining the profile of Rubisco, glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, catalase, fumarase, and cytochrome-c-oxidase across spinach leaves was examined by exposing leaves to illumination on either the adaxial or abaxial leaf surfaces. Oxygen evolution in fresh paradermal leaf sections and CO(2) gas exchange in whole leaves under adaxial or abaxial illumination was also examined. The results showed that the palisade mesophyll is responsible for the midday depression of photosynthesis in spinach leaves. The photosynthetic apparatus was more sensitive to the light environment than the respiratory apparatus. Additionally, examination of the paradermal leaf sections by optical microscopy allowed us to describe two new types of parenchyma in spinach-pirum mesophyll and pillow spongy mesophyll. A hypothesis that oxaloacetate may protect the upper leaf tissue from the destructive influence of active oxygen is presented. The application of mathematical modeling shows that the pattern of enzymatic distribution across leaves abides by the principle of maximal ecological utility. Light regulation of carbon metabolism across leaves is discussed.

Аннотация: The phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition of microorganisms in podzolic soils of pine forests was studied in Central Siberia. The live microbial biomass in the 1-m mineral soil layer was found to gradually decrease with depth. Although the biomass decreased by half in the lower horizons, its content remained sufficiently high (12-14 nmol FAs/g soil). The coefficient of similarity in the fatty acid composition between the soils of forest and open (unforested) sites was 0.85. The coefficient of fatty acid richness in the mineral soil layer decreased with depth, while differences in fatty acid profiles increased.
