Аннотация: Measurements of conifers tree ring width from 280 dendrochronological sites were analyzed for Russia. Tree-ring series by the cambial age of the ring (also known as regional growth curves) were fitted with negative-exponential curve using maximum and minimum ring width and a constant related to site as the parameters of approximation.

Аннотация: A fire history of northern larch forests was studied. These larch forests are found near the northern limit of their range at similar to 71 degrees N, where fires are predominantly caused by lightning strikes rather than human activity. Fire-return intervals (FRIs) were calculated based on fire scars and dates of tree natality. Tree natality was used as an approximation of the date of the last fire. The average FRI was found to be 295 +/- 57 years, which is the longest reported for larch-dominated stands. Prior studies reported 80-90-year FRIs at 64 degrees N and similar to 200 years near the latitude of the Arctic Circle. Comparing data from fires that occurred in 1700-1849 (end of the Little Ice Age, LIA) and 1850-1999 (post-LIA warming) indicates approximately twice as many fires occurred during the latter period. This agrees with the hypothesis that observed climatic warming will result in an increase in fire frequency. Our results also indicate that fires that did not leave visible fire scars on the tree stem may be identified based on the date of growth release revealed from dendrochronology.

PRELIMINARY DATA ON BODY MOVEMENT OF FREELY FLYING BUTTERFLIES
[Текст] / D. L. GRODNITSKY // Zool. Zhurnal. - 1993. - Vol. 72, Is. 7. - С. 84-94. - Cited References: 48 . - 11. - ISSN 0044-5134

Аннотация: Vertical and horizontal periodic movements of the body following each wing stroke were investigated in three butterfly species during their free flight in a transparent cage. Distribution of the movements along the stroke cycle shows that specimens climb during downstroke, supination, and upstroke. Pronation of the wings in the top of their trajectory (Weis-Fogh's clap-and-fling mechanisms) is followed by height reduction. The horizontal distance that insects cover during pronation and downstroke exceeded mean value and it was less than the mean value during supination and upstroke. The data acquired suggest that distributions in lift and thrust along a stroke cycle are characterized by sinusoid-like curves as a first approximation. Maximal lift is generated during the end of each downstroke, while the maximal thrust coincides in time with the end of the upstroke and the clap of the wings. A new non-steady mechanism of aerodynamic force generation is proposed. The mechanism is connected with air throwing off the flapping planes during their pronation and supination. Horizontal flight speed is negatively correlated with the angle between the body and the horizon, but does not depend on wing beat frequency. A hypothesis is suggested that insect flapping flight power regulation system includes a finite number of stable kinematic patterns each corresponding to a particular flight mode and characterized by specific values of intimately correlated stroke parameters.

Аннотация: The introduction of Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH), requires companies to register and risk assess all substances produced or imported in volumes of >1 tonne per year. Extrapolation methods which use existing data for estimating the effects of chemicals are attractive to industry, and comparative data are therefore increasingly in demand. Data on natural toxic chemicals could be used for extrapolation methods such as read-across. To test this hypothesis, the toxicity of natural chemicals and their synthetic analogues were compared using standardised toxicity tests. Two chemical pairs: the napthoquinones, juglone (natural) and 1,4-naphthoquinone (synthetic); and anthraquinones, emodin (natural) and quinizarin (synthetic) were chosen, and their comparative effects on the survival and reproduction of collembolans, earthworms, enchytraeids and predatory mites were assessed. Differences in sensitivity between the species were observed with the predatory mite (Hypoaspis aculeifer) showing the least sensitivity. Within the chemical pairs, toxicity to lethal and sub-lethal endpoints was very similar for the four invertebrate species. The exception was earthworm reproduction, which showed differential sensitivity to the chemicals in both naphthoquinone and anthraquinone pairs. Differences in toxicity identified in the present study may be related to degree of exposure and/or subtle differences in the mode of toxic action for the chemicals and species tested. It may be possible to predict differences by identifying functional groups which infer increased or decreased toxicity in one or other chemical. The development of such techniques would enable the use of read-across from natural to synthetic chemicals for a wider group of compounds. В© 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Approximation of the High-Temperature Fire Zone Based on Terra/MODIS Data in the Problem of Subpixel Analysis

Аннотация: Abstract: In this work, an improved approach of the pixel-based analysis of the Terra/MODIS imagery is proposed. The approach allows us to improve the accuracy in estimating characteristics of the combustion zone when detecting thermal anomalies. The investigation is carried out based on the imagery of active vegetation fires in Siberian forests by the MODIS radiometer in the spectral ranges of 3930 to 3990 and 10 780 to 11 280 ?m (bands 21 and 31, respectively). It is proposed to describe the approximation of the temperature profile of the fire front using an exponential function. Using the nonuniform approximation of the temperature distribution on the surface in the vicinity of the active combustion zone allows us to determine the portion of the active pixel of the Terra/MODIS image with the given temperature excess over the background temperature in it. This improves the accuracy in extracting active combustion zones and classifying the heat release rate at the subpixel level. This approach is applicable to monitoring fire development phases in the near real time mode. © 2019, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The dynamics of microbial biomass, its structure and functional activity in soils of felling areas in southern taiga fir forests have been studied; they represented different stages of natural regenerative successions. In the upper organomineral horizons of soddy-podzolic soils (Albic Glossic Retisol (Loamic, Cutanic, Ochric)) of the succession series after felling, recovering through a substitution of fir by birch, an increase in the content of Cmic and the intensity of basal respiration from recent felling to the stage of pole-wood is noted. The soil of pole-wood stage has the highest total reserves of Cmic (170 g C/m3) and microbial production of CO2 (528 mg СО2–С/m3 per hour), exceeding control by 80–85%. In the humus-accumulative soil horizon of the studied succession series, there was a tendency of decreasing both the proportion of fungal to the total substrate-induced respiration, and the ratio of fungi/bacteria in comparison with the control. In the middle-aged deciduous forests with dark-coniferous undergrowth, all the considered parameters of the microbial complexes decreased, but continue to exceed the control. In the profile of soddy-podzolic soil of the reforestation series without species change for 8-year period, the trend of reducing Cmic and BR was noted; already at the stage of fir of pole-wood the approximation of all ecological-functional parameters of the microbial complex to the control short grass–green moss fir forests was observed

Аннотация: We examined and simulated the consequences of the degradation of the litter and the moss-lichen layer after fire impact, which could affect the seasonal temperature of the soil and the depth of the seasonally thawed layer (STL) in the permafrost zone. According to the analysis of satellite imagery for 2000 to 2019, the fire-disturbed area in the region of interest amounted to 20%. The main aims of the study included quantitative evaluation of the variation range of summer temperature anomalies at fire-damaged plots, summarizing the statistical norm of the STL depending on natural conditions, and numerical simulation of the response of the STL. Using Terra and Aqua/MODIS imagery, we analyzed surface temperature (in bands of lambda = 10.780-11.280 and 11.770-12.270 mu m) coupled with the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for non-disturbed and fire-damaged sites under the same natural conditions of larch forests in Central Siberia. Heat transfer, freezing and thawing processes were numerically simulated for two extreme cases of soil conditions: dry soil and water-saturated soil. The model was also applied to soil with non-homogeneous water content. As input parameters, we used data on the properties of cryogenic soils collected in larch forests (Larix gmelinii) in the flat-mountainous taiga region of the Evenkia (Central Siberia). For post-fire plots, surface temperature anomalies observed during summer months remained significant for more than 15-20 years after fire impact, while the NDVI values were restored to the statistical norm within 7-10 years of the fire. According to the results of numerical simulation, the thickness of the STL could show a 30-50% increase compared to the statistical norm. In the first approximation, we showed the annual soil temperature dynamics at various depths in disturbed and non-disturbed plots.

Аннотация: The paper considers a new approach to modeling the relationship between the increase in woody phytomass in the pine forest and satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST) (MODIS/AQUA) data. The developed model combines the phenological and forest growth processes. For the analysis, NDVI and LST (MODIS) satellite data were used together with the measurements of tree-ring widths (TRW). NDVI data contain features of each growing season. The models include parameters of parabolic approximation of NDVI and LST time series transformed using principal component analysis. The study shows that the current rate of TRW is determined by the total values of principal components of the satellite indices over the season and the rate of tree increment in the preceding year. © 2020 by the authors. Active combustion zone -- Radiation -- Remote data -- Sub-pixel analysis -- Wildfire

Аннотация: An improved approach to evaluate thermal anomalies characteristics using the pixel-based analysis of the MODIS imagery was proposed. The approach allows us to improve the accuracy in estimating characteristics of active combustion zones comparing to the standard Dozier method. We used the imagery of active wildfires in Siberian forests from the MODIS radiometer acquired in the spectral ranges of 3.930–3.990 and 10.780–11.280 ?m (bands 21 and 31, respectively). Nonlinear exponential function was used to describe the approximation of the temperature of combustion zones. Available data of field and numerical experiments were used for validating of the approximation accuracy. Nonlinear approximation of wildfire front temperature allows to determine the portion of the active pixel of the MODIS image with the given temperature excess comparing to the temperature of background cover. This improves the accuracy in extracting of active burning zones as well as in classifying the heat release rate at the sub-pixel level of analysis. © 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
