Аннотация: The total environmental damage induced by pollution by smoke from wildfires is difficult to evaluate even roughly. This is partly due to insufficient data on smoke pollution, which is in turn attributed to unsufficient or even lacking estimated data composition and amounts of emissions from wildfires. Laboratory analysis of smoke producing capability (SPC), or smoke production coefficient would enable to make compilation of a comprehensive database of negative impacts smoke emission of wildfire. Our study showed that for boreal Siberian species the greatest SPC produced birch bark (Betula).

forest stands -- windfall -- successions -- competition models

Аннотация: Based on the concept of competition for resources, the distribution of trees upon reforestation in windfall areas is studied. As a theoretical model for competition, a Zipf-Pareto model of ranking the distribution of resources is used. Analysis shows that the processes resulting from competitive interactions between the trees of different species proceed slowly in a windfall area where coniferous species get replaced by deciduous ones. In the territory where deciduous species initially dominated, competitive interactions between trees of different species turn out to be formed almost immediately upon natural reforestation after the windfall. By the time the ratio of species stabilizes and becomes a steady state, the ranks of individual species also stabilize. This result is obtained on the basis of a quantitative assessment of the change in leadership between competing species in time using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.

Аннотация: Some indices of individual variability in annual growth of Siberian larch in open woodlands of Khakassia are compared. In the Shira forest-steppe the Siberian larch exhibits high sensitivity of annual growth and diverse responses to changes in vegetative conditions. Stabilizing selection maintains dominance of trees with moderately sensitive annual growth. Such trees are the most vital. It has been shown that the adaptive norm of population's response and the individual variability of annual growth positively correlate with the total annual precipitation. The sensitivity index of annual growth is a better indicator of the genetic structure of the population than the coefficient of variability of annual growth indices.

Аннотация: A model of the population dynamics of insects has been developed, which takes into account the food consumption by insects and the reaction of food plants to the damage. Equations have been derived that describe the relationship between the coefficient of insect reproduction, the weight of females, the energetic effectiveness of the food consumption by insects, and the reaction of food plants. The scenarios of population outbreaks have been analyzed as a function of the weight of females in the stable state. The results of modeling have been compared with the data of natural observations.

larch forests -- successions -- climatic trends -- forest fire sites -- permafrost

Аннотация: The expansion of so-called evergreen conifers (EGCs), including Siberian stone pine, spruce, and fir, along the transect oriented from the boundary of the larch-dominated zone (LDZ; mixed forests of the Yenisei Ridge) to its center has been studied. The normalized dispersal coefficient calculated as K-i = (n(i) - N-i)/(n(i) + N-i), where ni and Ni are the relative numbers of the ith species in the undergrowth and the upper layer, respectively, serves as an indicator of the expansion. It has been found that the Ki values for EGCs (and birch) are higher than the Ki of larch even in the zone absolutely dominated by larch, where the relative numbers of EGCs in the upper layer is less than 1%. The EGC undergrowth has mainly been formed during the past 20-30 years, which is correlated with the trend of summer temperatures The spread of EGCs in the LDZ depends on the frequency of forest fires. The decrease in the time intervals between fires in the 20th century to 65 years (versus 100 years in the 19th century) may have prevented the expansion of competing species in the LDZ. The results obtained indicate that EGCs and birch penetrate into the zone traditionally dominated by larch, which is related to climatic changes during the past three decades. At the same time, tree stand density is increasing in the forest-tundra ecotone, and larch is spreading further into the tundra zone.

Аннотация: Making the map of ground vegetation and analysis of its present state have been realized as well as dynamic tendencies in development of forest communities from climatic optimum of the Holocene up to the present time have been revealed. Forests of the reserve are mainly overmatured. Presently the succession of mountain taiga- and grass larch and pine forests by fir stands occurs. As a reason for changing formation composition of the main forest forming tree species of the reserve the global climatic changes of the northern hemisphere are. Floristic abundance of forest communities is characterized by high variability. a-diversity increases from the mountain taiga altitude - vegetation belt to the belt of subtaiga forest-steppe what corresponds to the increase of heat providing gradient. High coefficient of beta-diversity value variation in taiga and grass forest ecotone as well as in old cutting areas of light-coniferous forests shows instability of these phytocoenoses and rather fast succession of coenoelements of light-coniferous formations by the dark-coniferous ones.

Аннотация: Dubinin's theory of micropore volume filling was used to describe the isotherms of water resorption and desorption by natural wood of twelve species and chemically modified birch wood. The analysis showed that each wood sample is characterized by its own pair of the main equation parameters. The correlation between these parameters was also determined. The resorption/desorption characteristic which is a combination of the main equation parameters of the above mentioned theory was revealed to be invariable for all the studied examples of natural wood. It can be used for estimation of wood substance disturbances caused by chemical modification and probably anthropogenic factors effecting during wood formation. The thermal coefficient as a function of relative vapor pressure was found. This dependence and the main equation of the theory of micropore volume filling can be used to calculate sorption equilibrium for wood/water system under the limited set of experimental data.

Аннотация: The structure and functions of the microbial complexes in the soils after surface fires of different intensity were studied. The fires of high and medium intensity were found to lead to a significant decrease in the number and functional activity of microorganisms participating in the nitrogen-carbon cycle. The degree of changes in the postfire status of the soil microbocenoses was revealed to be related to the joint action of pyrogenesis and the hydrothermal conditions at the moment of the fire rather than to the fire intensity. The favorable combination of the elevated soil moisture and soil heating stimulates the microbiological processes of organic matter mineralization, thus, improving the forest-growing conditions for the pine forests. The microbial biomass, basal respiration, and the microbial metabolic coefficient are shown to adequately reflect the postfire status of the microbial complexes.

Аннотация: The number and the biomass of microorganisms were determined in the soils of the floodplain and islands in the Selenga River delta. The population of fungi in the soils studied was low. The number of saprotrophic prokaryote microorganisms varied from 10(6)-10(8) CFU/g of soil in the upper horizons to 10(4)-10(5) CFU/g in the lower horizons of the soils. This pattern is typical for most zonal soils. The microbial biomass in the floodplain soils was 2-4 times as high as that in the soils of the islands. The number of microorganisms of different ecologic-trophic groups participating in the nitrogen and carbon mobilization was much lower than that in the hydromorphic soils of the Transbaikal region or in the cryogenic soils of the Angara River basin (Irkutsk district). The low coefficient of microbiological mineralization and the low coefficient showing the lack of nitrogen (coefficient of oligotrophness) in the soils indicated the weak processes of organic matter decomposition in the soils studied. During the season investigated (August-September), the bacterial complexes in all the soils were dominated by bacteria of the genera Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Aquaspirillum. In the floodplain soils, streptomycetes constituted a considerable part of the microbial complexes of the floodplain soils, whereas, in the soils of the islands, their number was minor.

Аннотация: The phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) composition of microorganisms in podzolic soils of pine forests was studied in Central Siberia. The live microbial biomass in the 1-m mineral soil layer was found to gradually decrease with depth. Although the biomass decreased by half in the lower horizons, its content remained sufficiently high (12-14 nmol FAs/g soil). The coefficient of similarity in the fatty acid composition between the soils of forest and open (unforested) sites was 0.85. The coefficient of fatty acid richness in the mineral soil layer decreased with depth, while differences in fatty acid profiles increased.

Аннотация: Scots pine provenances from all over Russia planted in 1964 at the forest-steppe zone were analyzed. Eight tree-ring characteristics from 12 different provenances were measured densitometrically. The time span of tree-ring observation covers the period from 1969 to 1997. The sensitivity coefficient of latewood width, latewood and maximum densities and latewood percentage decreases in relation to the increasing latitude of the provenances. The growth of all studied provenances is dictated by the local weather and climate. The correlation coefficients of indices between the local provenance and the other provenances are not lower than 0.46-0.97, and the synchronicity coefficients are minimally 0.84. The Euclidean distances vary from 0.11 to 0.13 between the local provenance and the other provenances. All statistical parameters show that the interannual. variability reflects the prevailing influence of the local weather conditions. Variability of weather conditions determines up to 87% of the growth variability in the forest-steppe of southern Siberia.

Аннотация: Eight tree-ring characteristics (tree ring width, latewood and earlywood widths and densities, maximum and minimum densities and latewood percentage) were measured densitometrically in 16 Scots pine provenances in the southern taiga, Central Siberia. Age trends were excluded by standardization. It was found that the sensitivity coefficient of latewood width, latewood and maximum densities and latewood percentage has a tendency to decrease in relation to the increasing latitude of seed sources. Northern provenances utilise only the energy resources (heat and light) during the first half of the growing season effectively. The correlation of tree ring series between the local provenance and the other provenances decreases in relation to the increasing latitude difference between seed origins. As a whole, the values of the normalized Euclidean distance, correlation and synchronicity coefficients between the local provenance and the other provenances prove that, for most of the provenances, the interannual variability of the chosen tree ring characteristics reflects the prevailing influence of weather conditions (even for the populations from the northern taiga and forest-tundra zone). The variability of weather conditions determines up to 85% the variability of radial growth and wood density.

All stands were found to have a multi-aged structure. The average coefficient of variation for age is about 48%. The range of tree ages exceed 400 years in the oldest forests. The patterns of age distribution change for different age groups. For the youngest stands (40-80 years old) the age distribution was leptokurtic and positively skewed, whereas for middle-aged forests (80-180 years old) it tended to be more mesokurtic and symmetric. In the oldest stands (more than 180 years old) the distribution had a platykurtic form. A high correlation was found between the Weibull function coefficients and the coefficient of age variation and for the mean age. The oldest forests were found in river valleys. Middle-aged forests occur more commonly on middle slopes and the youngest forests occupy top slopes and uplands. A more normal tree age distribution assumes a study area less damaged by forest fires than in the more southern parts of the boreal forest.
