The formation of soil invertebrate communities in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / I. N. Bezkorovaynaya // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 307-316. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: An estimation of formation of soil invertebrate complexes was carried out on a common-garden provenance test with major Siberian woody species: arolla pine, Scots pine, Siberian larch, Norway spruce, birch, and aspen. The experiment was established on a former agricultural field, so the formation of soil communities over 30 year period combined the effects of both the reestablishment of forest conditions for soil formation and the influence of each tree species.

Аннотация: The approach to the estimation of mountain forest ecosystems in Altai-Sayan ecoregion is developed using bioclimatic classification of altitudinal belt complexes (abc) of forest types. The main characteristics and distribution of climate facies (groups of cyclonic and anticyclonic regions) are presented. The data base on biodiversity, climate and soils is added with new remote sensing data. The approach is aimed to find the optimal balance between different ways of multiple forest management keeping high environmental and social function of ecosystems and biogeocoenoses.

Аннотация: Changes in the composition of microbial complexes and their biochemical activity in soil in the vicinity of a strong source of HF emission have been studied. A sharp decrease of the biomass, the number of asporous bacteria and actinomycetes, and a smaller decrease of the number of microscopic fungi has been revealed, along with a decrease in the enzymatic and respiratory activity of contaminated soil with the relative increase in the fraction of sporiferous bacteria. On the basis of the response of introduced population of Bacillus subtilis to different doses of HF, NaF, Na(2)SO(3) microbiological norm-fixing for technogenic soil ecosystems has been carried out.

Аннотация: The thermal degradation of organic matter was studied in cryogenic soils with methods of thermal analysis: differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry (DSC and TG, respectively). The DSC curves of most of the samples within the temperature range from 221-247A degrees C to 600A degrees C were characterized by the presence of one wide exothermic peak (at 311-373A degrees C) with a shoulder (or without it) on the descending branch at a temperature of about 400A degrees C. This was connected mostly with the destruction of thermolabile compounds (oligo- and polysaccharides) and with the oxidation of low-aromatic complexes of plant residues and humus substances. Two exothermic peaks at 337-373A degrees C and 448-492A degrees C were found for some samples from the organic horizons. The high-temperature peaks were caused by the thermal destruction of lignin. The fraction of the thermolabile organic matter of the soil (237-261aEuro broken vertical bar 331-377A degrees C) reached 59-73% in the organic and 52-59% in the organomineral and mineral horizons.

Аннотация: The postfire transformation of the functional activity of the microbial cenoses and the main soil properties under mixed larch forests were studied in the lower reaches of the Angara River. It was shown that the intensity of the postfire changes in the population density, biomass, and activity of the microorganisms in the dark podzolized brown forest soil depended on the degree of burning of the ground cover and the surface litter during the fire. The maximum effects of the fire on the microbial cenoses were observed in the litter and the upper 5-cm-thick layer of the dark-humus horizon in the areas of intense burning. The postfire restoration of the structural-functional activity of the microbial cenoses was determined by the degree of transformation of soil properties and by the postpyrogenic succession in the ground cover. The microbial complexes of the dark podzolized brown forest soils under mixed larch forests in the studied region restored their functional activity after the fires of different intensities quicker than the microbial cenoses of the sandy podzols in the pyrogenic lichen-green-moss pine forests of the same zone.

Аннотация: We studied post-fire transformations in functional characteristics of soil microbial communities and invertebrate complexes in the central-taiga pine forests of Central Siberia. The study revealed that fires of any severity reduce the density and diversity of soil invertebrates and adversely affect the structure and functioning of the sandy podzol microbial complexes. Post-fire recovery of the density and structure of soil invertebrate complexes and the functioning of sandy podzol microbial communities depend on fire duration and severity, as well as dynamics of hydrothermal and trophic properties of the pine forest soils.

Аннотация: The agrochemical properties and microbiological activity of the soils on dump rocks of different ages and degrees of cultivation in the area of the Borodinsk coal strip mine were studied. The technogenic soils of the dumps significantly differed from the native soils in their total nitrogen content. In the young soils (less than 5 years old), the total nitrogen was present in trace amounts; in the 20-year-old dumps, its content was lower than in the control soils by 2.5 times. It was found that a humus horizon 2-3 cm thick was formed on the surface of the dumps after 20 years regardless of the reclamation practice and that the intensity of the biological processes was comparable to that in the control soils, because the microbial complexes functioned under conditions typical for automorphic soils. It was shown that the ecophysiological status of the 3- to 10-year-old soils was unstable and their microbocenoses were at the development stage.

Аннотация: Specific features of the soil formation and soil cover patterns in the mountainous alpine tundra and forest landscapes of the Central Khangai Range are analyzed. It is shown that the specific mucky grayhumus permafrost-affected soils are only formed under larch forests within the tundra-alpine and forest zones. Other soils have a wider geographic area. The morphological, physicochemical, and chemical characteristics of the widespread soils are given. A medium-scale map of the soil cover patterns-soil complexes, combinations, and mosaics-has been developed for the studied area.

MICROBIAL BIOMASS

Аннотация: The paper focuses on investigating the densities of different ecological trophic groups of soil microorganisms, cellulose decomposition rates, and respiration of cryogenic forest soils in the north of Central Siberia and those of the southern taiga subzone, including those affected by surface wildfires. Psychrotolerant bacteria and micromycetes were found to dominate these soil complexes. The biological activity of the upper soil horizon in the north appeared to be close to that in the south, although the growing season in the former area is shorter compared to the latter.

Аннотация: In deep peat soils of forest-swamp ecosystems of West Siberia, the structural, dynamic and functional features of microbial complexes are estimated. Data on biological and chemical activity of peat deposits in the context of processes of organic matter decomposition and humus accumulation are presented. Quantitative indicators of microbiological mineralization and soil oligotrophicity are given, and their coefficients are calculated. The pool of microorganisms of a 8 meter thick layer is calculated for estimating the degree to which the forest-swamp soils are enriched with microflora.

Аннотация: The influence of pine forests of different ages (from 25 to 85 years) restoring on old plow land soils is reflected in the biological processes proceeding in them. The drastic decrease in the absolute and relative number of actinomycetes, along with an increase of the fungal population in the microbial complexes of the soils (within the whole profiles), indicates that the microbocenoses acquire "forest" properties. In the soils under the younger pine forests, the processes of microbiological mineralization and specific respiration activity are more active than in the soils under the older pine forests. With the age of the pine forests, the soil profiles become more differentiated according to the eluvial-illuvial type.

nature reserves -- vascular plant species of the nature reserves -- phytochorological diversity -- alpha-diversity

Аннотация: The Sayano-Shushensky Nature Reserve is a standard primeval locus of high conservation value which remained undisturbed landscapes within the Altai-Sayan Mountain Land. In the plant cover the altitudinal belts are clearly expressed. The northern part of the Sayan-Shushensky reserve is included in moist areas of the Altai-Sayan forest vegetation zone and the Southern part of it is included in insufficiently moist areas of Central Asian forest zone. The ground vegetation of the reserve is presented by high-mountain tundra, meadows and shrub thicket sites, high-mountain open Pinus sibirica D u. T o u r. and Larix sibirica L e d e b. woodland, dark and light coniferous taiga, coniferous subtaiga, forest-steppe and steppe. As a whole forests occupy somewhat about 60% of the territory. Ecocenotic groups of species found in individual phytocoenoses in river basins of the northern part of the nature reserve are qualitatively different in composition and share from those ones found in the southern river basins. In the north, the high mountain ecocenotic species group enjoys the greatest abundance, and forest-meadow, taiga, and bog species are also represented substantially. Steppe and forest-steppe species are absent. Alpine, steppe, and forest-steppe species are found in equal shares in the southern part of the forest reserve. Invasive species are quite many. Taiga species contribution is three times less than in the north of the reserve. Conditions climatically optimal for the greatest species diversity are the result of a perfect balance of heat and moisture characteristics of subtaiga/forest-steppe altitudinal belt complexes (ABC). However, changes in phytochorological- and alpha-diversity of individual phyl.ocoenoses are influenced by ecological and phytocoenotic factors combined. The biggest number of species in the reserve occurs along the forest distribution boundaries - in subtaiga and high mountain open woodland whereas species are the fewest in mountain taiga. Conversely, phytomass loading is the greatest in mountain taiga and it decreases gradually towards alpine tundra and steppes.

Аннотация: New data on the structure, dynamics, and functioning of microbiological complexes in deep peat soils of Western Siberia are obtained. The highest population densities of microorganisms are registered in the zone of active peat accumulation with oxidizing conditions (I-Ox, 0-10 cm), in the zone with alternating reducing and oxidizing conditions (IIOx-Red, 50-100 cm), in the zone with permanently reducing conditions (IIIRed1, 250-350 cm), and in the zone with sharply reducing conditions (IVRed2, 550-675 cm). The oxidative type of microbial metabolism initiated by aerobic and facultative anaerobic microorganisms of the heterotrophic cycle is typical of the studied low-moor peat soils.

Аннотация: The effects of hydrothermal conditions on the complexes of soil invertebrates in 20-year-old cultures of Siberian stone pine, larch, Scotch pine, spruce, birch, and aspen are considered. The role of soil temperature and moisture content in determining the density of pedobionts and their vertical distribution is revealed. Seasonal fluctuations of hydrothermal parameters are shown to affect the vertical migrations of soil invertebrates and the dynamics of trophic structure of their complexes under forest cultures during the growing season.

The preferential development of complexes of psychrotolerant bacteria and micromycetes was found. During a short growing period, the biological activity of upper organic horizons in northern soils is comparable with that in southern taiga soils of Siberia. The microflora and biological activity of southern taiga soils in Central Siberia is understood rather completely. At the same time, information on the biogenic properties of forest soils in northern Siberian regions is scarce, though there are representative data on sylvicultural, soil, physiological, and biochemical studies of forest biogeocenoses.

Аннотация: The reserves of carbon in peat deposits and peaty and peat bog soils of Russia comprise 44.2 Gt C of humic substances (37.3% of the total reserve of C), 44.7 Gt C (37.8%) of insoluble residue, and 21.1 Gt C (17.8%) of polysaccharides, The carbon pool of humic acids constitutes 25.0 Gt and that of fulvic acids reaches 19.1 Gt. Humic acids predominate in low-moor peat, whereas fulvic acids predominate in high-moor peat. Transitional pear deposits contain approximately equal amounts of fulvic and humic acids. About 89-91% of the carbon of humic substances in different types of peat is represented by heterogeneous complexes of the first and third fractions.

Аннотация: The structure and functions of the microbial complexes in the soils after surface fires of different intensity were studied. The fires of high and medium intensity were found to lead to a significant decrease in the number and functional activity of microorganisms participating in the nitrogen-carbon cycle. The degree of changes in the postfire status of the soil microbocenoses was revealed to be related to the joint action of pyrogenesis and the hydrothermal conditions at the moment of the fire rather than to the fire intensity. The favorable combination of the elevated soil moisture and soil heating stimulates the microbiological processes of organic matter mineralization, thus, improving the forest-growing conditions for the pine forests. The microbial biomass, basal respiration, and the microbial metabolic coefficient are shown to adequately reflect the postfire status of the microbial complexes.
