Carbon and water exchanges of regenerating forests in central Siberia
/ M. Meroni, N. Tchebakova // Forest Ecology and Management. - 2002. - Vol. 169, № 1-2. - С. 115-122

Аннотация: Direct measurements of CO2 and water vapour of regenerating forests after fire events (secondary succession stages) are needed to determine the role of such disturbances in the biome carbon and water cycles functioning. An estimation of the extension of burnt areas is also required in order to quantify NBP (net biome productivity), a variable that includes large-scale carbon losses (such as fire) bypassing heterotrophic respiration. Hence, eddy covariance measurements Of CO2 and water vapour were carried out in a natural regenerating forest after a fire event. Measurements were collected continuously over a Betula spp. stand in central Siberia during summer 1999. Minimum carbon exchange rate (NEE, net ecosystem exchange) exceeded -30 mumol m(-2) s(-1) (net flux negative indicating CO2 uptake by vegetation) and the partitioning of the available energy was mostly dominated by latent heat flux. Structure, age and composition of the forest were analysed to understand the secondary succession stages. The results were compared with previous studies on coniferous forests where biospheric exchanges of energy were dominated by sensible heat fluxes and small carbon uptake rates, thus indicating rather limiting growing conditions. A classification of a Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper scene has been carried out to determine the magnitude of burnt areas and the extension of broadleaf regenerating forests. Analysis of burnt areas spatial frequency and carbon exchanges of the regenerating forest stress the importance of considering large area disturbances for full carbon accounting.     Climatic control of stand thinning in unmanaged spruce forests of the southern taiga in European Russia
/ N.N. Vygodskaya, E.-D. Schulze, N.M. Tchebakova et al // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 443-461

Аннотация: The demography of Picea abies trees was studied over a period of about 30 yr on permanent plots in six forest types of an unmanaged forest located in a forest reserve of the Southern Taiga, NW of Moscow. This study encompassed a broad range of conditions that are typical for old growth spruce forests in the boreal region, including sites with a high water table and well drained sites, podzolic soils, acidic soils and organic soils. At all sites stand density, tree height, breast height diameter and age has been periodically recorded since 1968. Tree density ranged between 178 and 1035 trees ha(-1) for spruce and between 232 and 1168 trees ha-1 for the whole stand, including mainly Betula and Populus. Biomass ranged between 5.4 and 170 t(dw) ha(-1) for spruce and between 33 to 198 td, ha(-1) for the whole stand. Averaged over a long period of time, biomass did not change with stand density according to the self-thinning rule. in fact, on most sites biomass remained almost constant in the long term, while stand density decreased. The study demonstrates that the loss of living trees was not regulated by competitive interactions between trees, but by disturbances caused by climatic events. Dry years caused losses of minor and younger trees without affecting biomass. In contrast, periodic storms resulted in a loss of biomass without affecting density, except for extreme events, where the whole stand may fall. Dry years followed by wet years enhance the effect on stand density. Since mainly younger trees were lost, the apparent average age of the stand increased more than real time (20% for Picea). Average mortality was 2.8 +/- 0.5% yr(-1) for spruce. Thus, the forest is turned over once every 160-180 yr by disturbances. The demography of dead trees shows that the rate of decay depends on the way the tree died. Storm causes uprooting and stem breakage, where living trees fall to the forest floor and decay with a mean residence time (t(1/2)) of about 16 yr (decomposition rate constant k(d) = 0.042 yr(-1)). This contrasts with trees that die by drought or insect damage, and which remain as standing dead trees with a mean residence time of 3-13 yr until they are brought to ground, mainly by wind. These standing dead trees require an additional mean residence time of about 22 yr for decay on the ground (k(d) = 0.031). In conclusion, we demonstrate that, rather than competitive interactions, it is climate extremes, namely drought, rapid changes of dry years followed by wet years, and storm that determine stand structure, biomass and density, which then affect the net exchange with the atmosphere. The climatic effects are difficult to predict, because the sensitivity of a stand to climate extremes depends on the past history. This may range from no effect, if the stand was recovering from an earlier drought and exhibited a relatively low density, to a total collapse of canopies, if drought reduces stand density to an extent that other climatic extremes (especially wind) may cause further damage.

Net ecosystem productivity and peat accumulation in a Siberian Aapa mire
/ E. -D. Schulze, A. S. Prokushkin, E. A. Vaganov // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 531-536

Аннотация: Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was studied in a bog located in the middle taiga of Siberia using two approaches, the accumulation of peat above the hypocotyl of pine trees, and the eddy covariance flux methodology. NEP was 0.84 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using the peat accumulation method; it was 0.43-0.62 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using eddy covariance over three growing seasons. These data were compared with NEP of the surrounding forest, which was 0.6 tC +/- 1.1 hat yr(-1). The trees growing on the bog reached a total height of about 3 m and an age of 80-120 yr when peat accumulation reached 0.5-0.6 m. At that stage the growth rate of the oldest trees declined. This indicates that there is a maximum age that can be reached by trees growing on hummocks (150 yr), depending on conditions. The data show that the determination of NEP in bogs by using the peat accumulation above the hypocotyl is a useful method which can be applied on a wide range of bog types, but it may systematically overestimate NEP. The total sink capacity for carbon assimilation of bogs is comparable to that of forest, although methane emissions and losses of dissolved organic carbon must be taken into account when assessing the regional carbon cycle.

Annual ecosystem respiration budget for a Pinus sylvestris stand in Central Siberia
/ O. Shibistova, G. Zrazhevskaya et al // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 568-589

Аннотация: Using a ground-based and an above-canopy eddy covariance system in addition to stem respiration measurements, the annual respiratory fluxes attributable to soil, stems and foliage were determined for a Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forest growing in central Siberia. Night-time foliar respiration was estimated on the basis of the difference between fluxes measured below and above the canopy and the stem respiration measurements. Comparison of the effects of night-time turbulence on measured CO2 fluxes showed flux loss above the canopy at low wind speeds, but no such effect was observed for the ground-based eddy system. This suggests that problems with flow homogeneity or flux divergence (both of which would be expected to be greater above the canopy than below) were responsible for above-canopy losses under these conditions. After correcting for this, a strong seasonality in foliar respiration was observed. This was not solely attributable to temperature variations, with intrinsic foliar respiratory capacities being much greater in spring and autumn. The opposite pattern was observed for stem respiration, with the intrinsic respiratory capacity being lower from autumn through early spring. Maximum respiratory activity was observed in early summer. This was not simply associated with a response to higher temperatures but seemed closely linked with cambial activity and the development of new xylem elements. Soil respiration rates exhibited an apparent high sensitivity to temperature, with seasonal data implying a Q(10) of about 7. We interpret this as reflecting covarying changes in soil microbial activity and soil temperatures throughout the snow-free season. Averaged over the two study years (1999 and 2000), the annual respiratory flux was estimated at 38.3 mol C m(-2) a(-1). Of this 0.61 was attributable to soil respiration, with stem respiration accounting for 0.21 and foliar respiration 0.18.

Seasonal and annual variations in the photosynthetic productivity and carbon balance of a central Siberian pine forest
/ J. Lloyd, O. Shibistova et al // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 590-610

Аннотация: We present a first analysis of data (June 1998 to December 2000) from the long-term eddy covariance site established in a Pinus sylvestris stand near Zotino in central Siberia as part of the EUROSIBERIAN CARBONFLUX project. As well as examining seasonal patterns in netecosystem exchange (N-E), daily, seasonal and annual estimates of the canopy photosynthesis (or gross primary productivity, G(P)) were obtained using N-E and ecosystem respiration measurements. Although the forest was a small (but significant) source of CO2 throughout the snow season (typically mid-October to early May) there was a rapid commencement of photosynthetic capacity shortly following the commencement of above-zero air temperatures in spring: in 1999 the forest went from a quiescent state to significant photosynthetic activity in only a few days. Nevertheless, canopy photosynthetic capacity was observed to continue to increase slowly throughout the summer months for both 1999 and 2000, reaching a maximum capacity in early August. During September there was a marked decline in canopy photosynthesis which was only partially attributable to less favourable environmental conditions. This suggests a reduction in canopy photosynthetic capacity in autumn, perhaps associated with the cold hardening process. For individual time periods the canopy. photosynthetic rate was mostly dependent upon incoming photon irradiance. However, reductions in both canopy conductance and overall photosynthetic rate in response to high canopy-to-air vapour differences were clearly evident on hot dry days. The relationship between canopy conductance and photosynthesis was examined using Cowan's notion of optimality in which stomata serve to maximise the marginal evaporative cost of plant carbon gain. The associated Lagrangian multiplier (lambda) was surprisingly constant throughout the growing season. Somewhat remarkably, however, its value was markedly different between years, being 416 mol mol(-1) in 1999 but 815 mol mol(-1) in 2000. Overall the forest was a substantial sink for CO2 in both 1999 and 2000: around 13 Mol C m(-2) a(-1). Data from this experiment, when combined with estimates of net primary productivity from biomass sampling suggest that about 20% of this sink was associated with increasing plant biomass and about 80% with an increase in the litter and soil organic carbon pools. This high implied rate of carbon accumulation in the litter soil organic matter pool seems unsustainable in the long term and is hard to explain on the basis of current knowledge.

Genetic and environmental signals in tree rings from different provenances of PINUS SYLVESTRIS L. planted in the southern taiga, Central Siberia
/ Y. Savva, F. Schweingruber, L. I. Milyutin, E. Vaganov // Trees. Structure and Function. - 2002. - Vol. 16, № 4-5. - С. 313-324

Аннотация: Seeds of Scots pine provenances originating from all over Russia were planted in the Boguchany provenance trial at a central Siberian location (southern taiga) in 1974. Eight tree-ring density and width parameters for 16 different provenances were measured with densitometric techniques. The tree-ring data were recorded from 1982 to 1996. Correlation analysis calculated by raw series showed that tree-ring width decreases and percentage of latewood increases with an increase in the latitude of the seed source. High variability was found for raw tree-ring characteristics from tree to tree within each provenance for an observed period (individual variability). The age trend of each tree is well described by the chosen fitting curve, and is similar for the mean series of each provenance. As a consequence of these findings, the indexed chronology for each provenance mainly shows climatic signals. The SD of the indexed chronology (chronological variability) is low for each provenance, showing low sensitivity to climatic influences. A cluster analysis of provenances represented by tree-ring characteristics differentiated the provenances into three groups. However, the statistical distance between the groups was minor. So we can confirm that Scots pine provenances are highly adaptable to local ecological conditions and regional climatic influences.

Аннотация: It is marked, that during four year period of research soil respiration rate was essentially dependent on both microrelief elements (0.4-5.umol CO2/m2/s) and meteorological conditions of a year (1.0-3.77 umol CO2/m2/s). For the control plot, irrespectively for microrelief, the presence of powerfully developed litter and great number of roots have had the main direct effect on CO2-emission.

Genetic diversity, structure and differentiation of Gmelin Larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) populations from Central Evenkia and Eastern Zabaikalje
: материалы временных коллективов / N. V. Oreshkova [и др.] // Eurasian journal of forest research. - 2006. - Vol. 9-1. - С. 1-8

Аннотация: As a results of studies conducted it was established that genetic diversity and structure of L. gmelinii populations in Central Evenkia and in Eastern Zabaikalje are significantly distinguished. The mean genetic distance D between populations from these regions calculated on the basis of allelic frequencies 17 isoenzyme loci is equal to 0.03. The review of data at genetic diversity and intraspesific differentiation of conifer species showed that such extent of genetic differentiation is characteristic of geographical races of single species. On this basis we concluded that L. gmelinii populations from Central Evenkia and Eastern Zabaikalje are genetically isolated and can be regarded as geographical races. The data obtained confirm the supposition of Abaimov and Milyutin that L. gmelinii, growing in various on natural conditions regions within the limits of its vast area, has to subdivide into more small intraspecific taxons. Results of our studies represent only a part of the total work that is necessary to fully assess the variability of this species.

: материалы временных коллективов / I. Tretyakova, A. Vyazovetskova, A. I. Ivanova // Eurasian journal of forest research. - 2006. - Vol. 9-1. - С. 37-44

Аннотация: The male buds of Siberian larch do not have an organic dormancy in the fall-winter period and, under favorable conditions, they are able to complete the development of the male generative structures. Cultivation of microsporophylls on MS medium containing 0.2-0.5 mg/1 of hormone 2,4-D, during a month, resulted in the unduction of androgenesis in vitro of Siberian larch. The increase of hormone concentration caused the development of necrotic processes. Data on androgenesis in vitro of Siberian larch, from representative gymnosperms, was obtained for the first time. Two development type embryos were obtained by cultivating microsporophylls of Siberian larch on MS medium.

Аннотация: We examined effect of soil temperature and mineral soil water content on soil respiration regarding to CO2 conditions and soil type. Only a few correlations between soil respiration and ecological factors had been found. Thus, there was one negative significant correlation between soil respiratiion and Tsoil of volcanic soil at elevated CO2 in July (r2=-0.67, p=0.002, N=18). We found negative correlations between Rsoil and MSWC in volcanic soil at elevated CO2 in July (r2=-0.57, p=0.015, N=18), in brown forest soil at elevaedt CO2 in August (r2=-0.53, p=0.023, N=18), and in brown forest soil at ambient CO2 in October (r2=-0.59, p=0.010, N=18). We did not find any effect of soil type on soil respiration during vegetative period.

Аннотация: The results of this study thus provides evidence that the BC stocks are strongly related to the OC stocks in general and to the environmental variables that control the OC stocks. A similar result was obtained by Glaser and Amelung for BC in North American native grassland soils. They concluded that the BC storage in soils is controlled by higher BC productiion at sites with high plant biomass and by shorter BC residence time in soils showing favourable conditions for OC decomposition. The data also show that if permafrost degradation is taking place by some kind of disturbance, in particular the bogs will loose BC to a large extent. It is proportionally even more pronounced than for OC in general. Hence, BC in permafrost soils is highly susceptible to permafrost thawing and cannot be considered as a refractory carbon species in such ecosystem. Also it is discussed another questions.

Biochemistry of carbon and nitrogen in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / E. F. Vedrova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 281-292. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We evaluated parameters (stock and flux) carbon, nitrogen and ash element cycling in the plant-soil system. The study was performed in arolla pine, Scots pine, Siberian larch, Norway spruce, aspen and birch plantations established on Kemchug upland, Chulym-Yenisei denudational plain, in 1968-1972. Young ecosystems (age class 2) that have developed under relatively similar environmental conditions have thus accumulated different amounts of organic and mineral matter in biomass and detritus, mainly due to differences in major woody species characteristics. All ecosystems are a net atmosperic carbon sink, with a pooling rate of 1.81-4.43 t C ha -1 yr -1. The sink (NEP) is made up by C accumulation in stand biomass production, vegetation detritus, and soil humus and accounts for 46-76% of the total C allocated in annual increment; the main componentt is net C flux to biomass. The rate of N-min flux from soil pool to NPP is in fact in balance with that soil N-min accumulation in the arolla pine, larch, spruce, and birch plots. In addition, the ecosystems are characterized by a transitional cycling regime evident through non-balanced controlling organic and mineral matter stored in "plant-soil" system blocks.

: материалы временных коллективов / O. A. Zyryanova, V. I. Zyryanov et al // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 19-29. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

Nitrogen dynamics in leaves of deciduous broad-leaved tree seedlings grown in summer green forests in Northern Japan
: материалы временных коллективов / K. Takayoshi, K. Satoshi, O. V. Masyagina // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 115-119. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Dynamics of nitrogen in leaves of trees and seedlings of deciduous broad-leaf species were studied for improving forest management. The photosynthetic traits of canopy leaves of diciduous broad-leaved trees were measured using a canopy tower. There was a clear positive correlation between leaf nitrogen content and light saturated photosynthetic rate at sunny canopy. As reflecting the shoot development pattern, leaf senescence began from the inner part of the crown in early successional species, by contrast leaf senescence process commences from either the outer or top portion of the crown in late successional species. For regenerated seedlings in forest floor, seasonal change in the allocation pattern of leaf nitrogen coincided with the changing of light conditions through the leaf phenology of upper canopy. In light limited condition, nitrogen was allocated to chlorophyll while it allocated to more to photosynthetic carbon fixation, i.e. Rubisco in strong light condition. Nitrogen allocated was affected more by light to CO2 condition that was found in birch and beech seedlings with a FACE system.
