Soil and canopy CO2, 13CO2, H2O and sensible heat flux partitions in a forest canopy inferred from concentration measurements
/ J.M. Styles et al, O. Shibistova // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 655-676

Аннотация: A canopy scale model is presented that utilises Lagrangian dispersal theory to describe the relationship between source distribution and concentration within the canopy. The present study differs from previous studies in three ways: (1) source/sink distributions are solved simultaneously for CO2, (CO2)-C-13, H2O and sensible heat to find a solution consistent with leaf-level constraints imposed by photosynthetic capacity, stomatal and boundary layer conductance, available energy and carbon isotopic discrimination during diffusion and carboxylation; (2) the model is used to solve for parameters controlling the nonlinear source interactions rather than the sources themselves; and (3) this study used plant physiological principles to allow the incorporation of within- and above-canopy measurements of the C-13/C-12 ratios Of CO2 as an additional constraint. Source strengths Of CO2, H2O, sensible heat and (CO2)-C-13 within a Siberian mixed-coniferous forest were constrained by biochemical and energy-balance principles applied to sun and shaded leaves throughout the canopy. Parameters relating to maximum photosynthetic capacity, stomatal conductance, radiation penetration and turbulence structure were determined by the optimisation procedure to match modelled and measured concentration profiles, effectively inverting the concentration data. Ground fluxes Of CO2, H2O and sensible heat were also determined by the inversion. Total ecosystem fluxes predicted from the inversion were compared to hourly averaged above-canopy eddy covariance measurements over a ten-day period, with good agreement. Model results showed that stomatal conductance and maximum photosynthetic capacity were depressed due to the low temperatures experienced during snow melt; radiation penetrated further than simple theoretical predictions because of leaf clumping and penumbra, and stability effects were important in the morning and evening. The inversion was limited by little vertical structure in the concentration profiles, particularly of water vapour, and by co-dependence of canopy parameters.

Birches as sap producing species of Russia: their distribution, ecophysiological features, utilization and sap productivity
: материалы временных коллективов / O. Zyryanova, M. Terazawa, T. Koike // Tree sap 3. Proceedings of the 3rd International symposium on sap utilization (ISSU) in Bifuka 2005, Hokkaido, Japan, April 15-17, 2005. - Sapporo : Hokkaido University Press, 2005. - С. 19-36. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Four birch species are traditionally used for the sap harvesting in Russia. In the report, we discuss their spatial and ecophysiological features as well as the exudation, tapping periods and sap productivity. Biochemical constituents of the living tissues of the birches such as the wood, outer and inner bark, twigs, leaves, buds, roots, and exudated birch sap are also reviewed. We show numerous useful wooden, medicinal, tanning, coloring as well as feeding and decorative properties. Chaga - a fungi-parasite developed on the stems of the birch trees, is mentioned to be famous due to its antitumor and/or especially anti-cancer activity. It is reported that the former birch sap production closed completely at the transition to a market-economy has restarted in the Russian Far East.

Аннотация: Estimates of carbon (C) storage for the forest vegetation of Russia vary to a considerable extent. In this paper we describe methods of estimating C storage of forest ecosystems and present estimates of C storage in the forest vegetationb of administrative territories and ecoregion of Russia. Estimates of C storage are based on National Forest Inventory data, estimates of the phytomass of trees and other vegetation of different forest ecosystems in various ecoregions of Russia, and mapped data for natural ecoregions. The forest ecosystems of Russia (771.1 Mha) have 118.8 Pg of C with 23.6% of the total in forest vegetation, 14.1% in the countries with temperate and boreal forest ecosystems.

The structure and biodiversity after fire disturbance
: материалы временных коллективов / O. A. Zyryanova, V. I. Zyryanov et al // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 19-29. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

The difference in the lignification of earlywood and latewood in larch (Larix sibirica Ldb.)
: материалы временных коллективов / G. F. Antonova, T. N. Varaksina, V. V. Stasova // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-2. - С. 149-161. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The rate of lignin deposition, its content and composition, and molecular weight distribution of different stages of secondary wall thickening during tracheid development of both earlywood and latewood in Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ldb.) were studied in the stems of 25-year-old trees. The cells of early and late xylem at different stages of secondary wall development were obtaint in late June and early in August, respectively. Lignification of the two types of wood was found to involve different dynamics. The intensity of lignin synthesis during earlywood formation increases gradually, reaching the maximum at the last stage of tracheid maturation. In contrast, lignin deposition in the course of latewood development is the highest only in the first stage of lignification and declines by the end of tracheid maturation. There were differences in the composition of alkaline oxidation products of lignin preparations at different development stages of early and late xylem. The amount of cell wall substances deposited before lignification in earlywood is larger than that in latewood.

Wystepowanie pozarow lasu w Syberii Srodkowej w zalesznosci od geograficznej i ocena uszkodzenia lasow
= Geographic conditionality of wildfires and estimition of damages of forests of Central Siberia : материалы временных коллективов / E. I. Ponomarev // Lesne Prace Badawcze (Forest Research Papers). - Vol. 69, № 2. - С. 109-115

Аннотация: This database of forest wildfires that occurred in Central Siberia in the years 2006 and 2007 was created on the basis of satellite image analysis. The database allowed to construct an up-to-date map of fire hazards and depict the geographic distribution of forest and non-forest fires during fire season. The duration of the active burning phase for the majority (88%) of forests in the region was 1 day. The spatial-temporal distribution of forest fires indicates a maximum fire risk at the end of June and the begining of July and in southern regions - also in spring and autumn. The analysis of images with depicting damage to forestland allows to state that c.30-40% are the stands with different stands with different degree of damage of which less than c. 30% show weak signs of recovery.

Potential change in lodgepole pine site index and distribution under climatic change in Alberta
: материалы временных коллективов / Robert A. Monserud [и др.] // Canadian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 38, № 2. - С. 343-352. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We estimated the impact of global climate change on lodgepole pine site productivity in Alberta based on the Alberts Climate Model and the A2 SRES climate change scenario projections from three global circulation models (CGCM2, HADCM3, and ECHAM4). Cosiderable warming ia apparent in all three models. On average, the increases in mean GDD5 (growing degree-day 5 degrees C) are 18%, 38%, and 65% by the 2020s, 2050s, respectively. Change in precipitation is essentially nil. This results in proportioanal increases in dryness index. We used the dryness index to predict the potential future range and GDD5 to predict its potential productivity.

Аннотация: A major focus of the study described here is an attempt to reveal the nature of local and any widespread tree-growth responses to the recent warming seen in the industrial observations. Namely, this chapter didcusses spatial variation in the trends of radial tree-ring growth in Siberia and Far EAST DURING DIFFERENT PERIODS OF THE 18TH CENTURIES. That distribution of trends is compared with spatial NDVI trends and temperature changes in the northern hemisphere over the past 20 years.

Аннотация: Climatic and geographic patterns of the spatial precipitation distribution in Central Siberia are studied on a regional level. Computer models of spatiall precipitation distribution were developed for the Yenisei Mountain Chain, Eastern Sayan, and the South-eastern Trans-Baikal region. Owing to irregular spatial distribution of precipitaion three groups of landscapes were defined: (1) slopes of west, north-west aspect with orographic precipitation; (2) shadow slopes in mountain regions; (3) plain landscapes. Obtained equautions show correlations between the amount of precipitation and altitude, geographical latitude, distance from barrier ridge and other parameters.

The influence of density on distribution of biometric parameters in young pine forests of the natural origin
: материалы временных коллективов / D. S. Sobachkin, A. V. Benkova, R. S. Sobachkin // Boreal forests in a changing world: challenges and needs for action: Proceedings of the International conference August 15-21 2011, Krasnoyarsk, Russia. - Krasnoyarsk : V.N. Аннотация: iTree size (diameter, height, crown length) distributions in young pine forests of the natural origin (of the second- age class) developing in Central Siberia have been taken into consideration. Nineteen stands representing a series of density variants varied from 1826 to 33381 trees ha. With use of curve-fitting distribution by Pearson the analysis of density affecting stands structure was carried out. The denser stands are found to be thinner, shorter, with undeveloped crown and ,in general, more homogencous. Diameter of the stand is more sensitive to density increase than tree height and crown length.

Invertebrate response to the fragmentation of boreal forests: edge effects
: материалы временных коллективов / A. V. Gurov, A. Battisti, A. Rowues // Boreal forests in a changing world: challenges and needs for action: Proceedings of the International conference August 15-21 2011, Krasnoyarsk, Russia. - Krasnoyarsk : V.N. Аннотация: The difinition of the fenomenoin of forest fragmentation is shortlly discussed. The opinion is to examine this phenomenon both as a result and the process. It is proposed to consider the nowaday level of Siberian forest fragmentation as the initial stage of this process. The primary distributioin patterns of invertebrates across the forest edges are described There is a suggestion to regard the "indifferent response" as the absence of response. The presence of common distribution patterns among different groups of arthropods under rather diverse environmental conditions is significant also from practical viewpoint.

Аннотация: This is a short review of our recent studies on trophic adaptation of a boreal forest pest, the Siberian moth in its native range, North Asia and in Central Europe where the species is believed to invade in a near future. In Europe, the hierarchy in suitability of host plant genera (increasing from two-needle pines, spruce, fir, to larch) remains similar to that in the pest range. Besides European plants, some North American conifers from genera which do not exist in the pest habitat can be served as potential hosts for the insect.

Аннотация: The approach to the estimation of mountain forest ecosystems in Altai-Sayan ecoregion is developed using bioclimatic classification of altitudinal belt complexes (abc) of forest types. The main characteristics and distribution of climate facies (groups of cyclonic and anticyclonic regions) are presented. The data base on biodiversity, climate and soils is added with new remote sensing data. The approach is aimed to find the optimal balance between different ways of multiple forest management keeping high environmental and social function of ecosystems and biogeocoenoses.

Possible change in distribution of vegetation, tree species and their climatypes in Siberia in a warming climate
: материалы временных коллективов / N. M. Tchebakova // Workshop on climate change, the tree growth response, and reconstruction of climate 25-29 January 2006, V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest SB RAS, Krasnoyarsk, Russia. - Krasnoyarsk : V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest SB RAS, 2006. - С. 28

Аннотация: The results show enormous changes in the vegetation cover of Siberia for a warmed climate. Southern vegetation types such as southen taiga, subtaiga, and forest-steppe are expected to expand from about 10% to 70% coverage. This increase in coverage would be largely at the expense of northern and middle taiga each of which would then occupy less than 20%. Some contemporary climatypes are projected to diappear from Siberia while others common elsewhere would evolve. To mitigate these effects, climatypes should be transferred today to the expected future location of their climatic optima, a distance that is likely to approach 700-1200 km for Siberian species of larches.

Аннотация: In this work tree cores of Siberian Larch (Larix Sibirica) from the Altai mountains, Russia were used. We assume that the distribution of chemical elements within the tree-rings is the same as the distribution found in the local environment of the tree. The main goal of this work is to recover a year-to-year biochemical, geochemical and climatic history of a tree's local environment.

We examine the data from experimental investigations into the post-fire dynamics of Siberian stone pine forests in Southern Cisbaikalia. The analysis revealed that creeping fires of the litter-humus type in dry years constitute the main destructive factor in the dynamics of Siberian stone pine forests. Creeping fires involve desiccation of trees, while viability of Siberian stone pine trees that have survived the fire depends on the character and severity of fire-related tree injuries. We provide a characteristic of the lower layers of vegetation and its dynamics under the influence of fires of different intensities. It is shown that creeping fires have a negative influence on changes in reserves, qualitative fiber length distribution of organogenic soil horizons, and on their chemical composition.

Аннотация: The development of research into the history of tree growth and inferred summer temperature changes in Yamaha spanning the last 2000 years is reviewed. One focus is the evolving production of tree-ring width (TRW) and tree-ring maximum-latewood density (MXD) larch (Larix sibirica) chronologies, incorporating different applications of Regional Curve Standardisation (RCS). Another focus is the comparison of independent data representing past tree growth in adjacent Yamaha areas: Yamal and Polar Urals, and the examination of the evidence for common growth behaviour at different timescales. The sample data we use are far more numerous and cover a longer time-span at Yamal compared to the Polar Urals, but Yamal has only TRW, while there are both TRW and MXD for the Polar Urals. We use more data (sub-fossil and from living trees) than in previous dendroclimatic studies in this region. We develop a new TRW chronology for Yamal, more than 2000 years long and running up to 2005. For the Polar Urals we develop new TRW and MXD chronologies that show good agreement at short (<15 years) and medium (15-100 years) timescales demonstrating the validity of attempts to reconcile the evidence of longer-timescale information that they provide. We use a "conservative" application of the RCS approach (two-curve signal-free RCS), guarding against the possibility of "modern sample bias": a possible inflation of recent chronology values arising out of inadvertent selection of mostly relatively fast-growing trees in recent centuries. We also transform tree indices to have a normal distribution to remove the positive chronology skew often apparent in RCS TRW chronologies. This also reduces the apparent magnitude of 20th century tree-growth levels. There is generally good agreement between all chronologies as regards the major features of the decadal to centennial variability. Low tree-growth periods for which the inferred summer temperatures are approximately 2.5 degrees C below the 1961-90 reference are apparent in the 15-year smoothed reconstructions, centred around 1005, 1300, 1455, 1530, particularly the 1810s where the inferred cooling reaches -4 degrees C or even -6 degrees C for individual years, and the 1880s. These are superimposed on generally cool pre-20th century conditions: the long-term means of the pre-1900 reconstructed temperature anomalies range from -0.6 to -0.9 degrees C in our alternative reconstructions. There are numerous periods of one or two decades with relatively high growth (and inferred summer temperatures close to the 1961-1990 level) but at longer timescales only the 40-year period centred at 250 CE appears comparable with 20th century warmth. Although the central temperature estimate for this period is below that for the recent period, when we take into account the uncertainties we cannot be highly confident that recent warmth has exceeded the temperature of this earlier warm period. While there are clear warm decades either side of 1000 CE, neither TRW nor MXD data support the conclusion that temperatures were exceptionally high during medieval times. One previous version of the Polar Urals TRW chronology is shown here to be in error due to an injudicious application of RCS to non-homogeneous sample data, partly derived from root-collar samples that produce spuriously high chronology values in the 11th and 15th centuries. This biased chronology has been used in a number of recent studies aimed at reconstructing wider scale temperature histories. All of the chronologies we have produced here clearly show a generally high level of growth throughout their most recent 80 years. Allowing for chronology and reconstruction uncertainty, the mean of the last 100 years of the reconstruction is likely warmer than any century in the last 2000 years in this region. Аннотация: Based on the concept of competition for resources, the distribution of trees upon reforestation in windfall areas is studied. As a theoretical model for competition, a Zipf-Pareto model of ranking the distribution of resources is used. Analysis shows that the processes resulting from competitive interactions between the trees of different species proceed slowly in a windfall area where coniferous species get replaced by deciduous ones. In the territory where deciduous species initially dominated, competitive interactions between trees of different species turn out to be formed almost immediately upon natural reforestation after the windfall. By the time the ratio of species stabilizes and becomes a steady state, the ranks of individual species also stabilize. This result is obtained on the basis of a quantitative assessment of the change in leadership between competing species in time using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.

Аннотация: An automated information system making it possible to estimate spatial distribution of soil organic carbon pool with a high spatial resolution (1 km(2)) has been developed. According to the obtained estimates, the total pool of organic carbon in the 1-m-deep soil layer on the territory of Russia reaches 317.1 Pg; the average organic carbon density in this layer for the entire Russia constitutes 19.2 kg C/m(2). Of this amount, 14.4 Pg (or 0.90 kg C/m(2)) is stored in the litter horizon. The developed algorithm allows us to refine the results with the acquisition of new data on soils, vegetation, and the degree of their disturbance, which is particularly important in the changing world.
