Аннотация: Boreal forests constitute the world's largest terrestrial carbon pools. The main natural disturbance in these forests is wildfire, which modifies the carbon budget and atmosphere, directly and indirectly. Wildfire emissions in Russia contribute substantially to the global carbon cycle and have potentially important feedbacks to changing climate. Published estimates of carbon emissions from fires in Russian boreal forests vary greatly depending on the methods and data sets used. We examined various fire and vegetation products used to estimate wildfire emissions for Siberia. Large (up to fivefold) differences in annual and monthly area burned estimates for Siberia were found among four satellite-based fire data sets. Official Russian data were typically less than 10% of satellite estimates. Differences in the estimated proportion of annual burned area within each ecosystem were as much as 40% among five land-cover products. As a result, fuel consumption estimates would be expected to vary widely (3%-98%) depending on the specific vegetation mapping product used and as a function of weather conditions. Verification and validation of burned area and land-cover data sets along with the development of fuel maps and combustion models are essential for accurate Siberian wildfire emission estimates, which are central to balancing the carbon budget and assessing feedbacks to climate change.

Аннотация: It is shown that the diagnostics of the stage of woodland soils affected by wildfires and forest cuts can be determined by the evaluation indexes of the range of the scale of abundance of typical ecologic-and-trophic groups of microorganisms (ECTGM), microbiological activity coefficients, reserve and abundance fluctuations, and metabolism. The degree of impact of the technogenic emissions on the forest cover, soil, and phyllosphere according to ECTGM abundance on the diagnostic environments and their fermentative activity is expressed with the help of an advisability functional relation.

dwarfism of growth -- adaptation -- morphological variability -- fruiting

Аннотация: Dwarf and typical trees of Pinus silvestris L. in Shirinskaya forest-steppe are compared on variability of vegetative and generative organs and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruiting. Special attention is paid to investigation of the correlation structure of characters in the compared samples. It has been determined that the dwarf pines are characterized by high variability of dimensional and qualitative characteristics. In spite of generally low reproductive potential of dwarf trees some species are distinguished by regular and abundant fruiting. They are characterized by higher correlation of characteristics and tendency to gonochorism. In spite of generally small contribution of dwarf species into the reproduction of pine population, it is quite consistent with the small area occupied by rocks within the studied territory. Some species are distinguished by higher reproductive potential and may be used to solve the problems of selection.

Аннотация: Problem of wildfires has not been resolved anywhere in the world. Mere increase of technical power does not lead to desirable results. Forests of developed countries burn as actively as those in Africa or in Russia. The main reasons of wildfire problem are as follows: (1) Constant wandering of dry seasons over the planet causing outbreaks of wildfires. (2) Unpredicted self-development of ordinary wildfires into awful fire disasters. (3) Difficulties in delivery and use of heavy machines on hardly accessible territories. (4) Absence of a perfect technique for economic evaluation of how effectively the wildfire control system works. (5) Absence of the system of payments encouraging wildfire fighters. To solve the problem of wildfires in Russia it is necessary to: (1) Create the Russian wildfire behaviour and fire effects prediction system on the basis of the developed classification of vegetation fuels and methods of their mapping as well as maximum utilization of forest inventory information and Geographic Information System (GIS). (2) Elaborate a technique of proper wildfire monitoring including estimation of vegetation damage. (3) Improve daily rating of regional fire danger. (4) Improve fire-preventive arrangement of the territory covered by vegetation, the main goal being creation of favourable conditions for active fire management. (5) Choose the main direction in elaboration of fire-fighting means and methods taking into account their universality, simplicity, reliability, etc. (6) Elaborate an improved technique for estimation of economic effectiveness of the wildfire control system. (7) Develop international cooperation of scientists and professionals in fire management.

BLUE-STAIN FUNGI

Аннотация: Two methods for evaluation of pine stand vigor were tested on permanent sample plots near Krasnoyarsk City: visual evaluation and exposure to fungal metabolites. In the first case, forest vigor was estimated using the six-point system of the Sanitary Regulations of the Russian Federation as the mean score for 200 trees on the sample plots. In the second case, the vigor was evaluated from the size of the necrotic spot on inner bark of the tree after inoculation of 22-25 randomly chosen pines with the extract of fungus Ceratocystis laricicola Redfern and Minter. The necrotic spot size was significantly larger in pines from polluted forest as compared to background one. This points to the decrease in infection protection of trees affected by pollution, although visual evaluation of the stand vigor could not distinguish the polluted and background stands.

Landsat-7 -- oilfields reconnaissance and exploitation -- anthropogenic disturbances -- wildfires -- Siberian taiga

Аннотация: This paper study considers the effects of oil exploration and development in the oilfields of Evenkiya, Central Siberia (60degrees30'N/96degrees30'E). The drilling in this area was initiated in 1970, and the first oil was extracted in 1977. Image data from the US' Landsat - 7, the Russian "Resours", and the European ERS-2 remote sensing satellites were analyzed. The information value of the Landsat-7channels was evaluated. In particular, the fresh oil drilling sites effectively differ from old ones in the third (0.63-0.69 mum) and fourth (0.75-0.90 mum) channels. Recently burned areas are detectable in the middle IR (1.55-1.75, 2.08-2.35 mum). The classification accuracy depends on the number of channels used, but does not improve greatly using more than 4 or 5 channels. Landsat - 7 scenes enable the detection of patterns for parallel strips (5 - 10 in in width) of cut forest, the first sign of the oil reconnaissance. Alongside the direct impacts of oil-exploitation, fire frequency was increased. The "big" fires (area > 200 ha) caused similar to90% of the total damage, but only accounted for 10% of total firescars. The area of human-caused impact is similar to20% of territory, which is similar to2.5 higher than average for known oil development areas within the Landsat scene. The ERS-2 scenes were found to be effective for mapping fresh drilling sites only. The comparative analysis of "Resours" KFA-1000 camera scene (June 1984) and Landsat-7 (October 1999) showed that during this period the number of oilrigs increased nearly 5 times. Generally, the Landsat-7 data are effective for early detection of the anthropogenic impact on the Siberian larch-dominated communities.

Аннотация: Efficient syntheses of (ZE)-5,7-dodecadienol, a pheromone component of the Siberian moth, Dendrolimus superans sibiricus, and (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienol, a pheromone component of various Lepidoptera pheromones, were accomplished by cis reduction of the corresponding enynols with activated zinc. The most energetic reagent was zinc galvanized with copper and silver (Zn/Cu/Ag) that achieved rapid and high-yield reduction in methanol-water. The stereoselectivity of semihydrogenation was greater than or equal to98%. A process whereby zinc dust was continuously activated throughout the reduction with an acid was also satisfactory (95-98% cis). Field evaluation of the 1:1 mixture of (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienol and (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienal with the Siberian moth in Russia showed that the rubber septa pretreated with compound and stored at -80 degreesC were as effective as freshly treated septa. Moth responses to septa aged in open air indicated that lure effectiveness declined significantly after 2 weeks of aging. Thus, if rubber septa are used as pheromone dispensers in Siberian moth traps monitoring, they should be replaced biweekly with fresh septa for optimal trap effectiveness.

Аннотация: Forest areas can intercept surface runoff from upslope bare areas and transfer it to interflow. Therefore, planting protective forests along the banks of rivers, reservoirs, and lakes preserves natural water sources from pollution. Depending on the particular landscape conditions, the streamside forest shelterbelt (SFS) width is often either wider or narrower than the ecologically substantiated width. As a result, either water quality worsens or the ecologically unjustified prohibition of forest use leads to economic losses. The assessment of SFS width using GIS technologies allows considerable simplification of evaluation procedures and their application in practice. DEM processing is integrated into most modern GIS software packages. For example, the popular ESRI ArcGIS package with its Spatial Analyst module provides extra options for calculating a series of relief-based hydrological features, which include calculation procedures for surface flow direction, length of flow-producing slopes and surface flow accumulations. Two algorithms for GIS-based SFS construction were tested for several rivers of the Yenisei basin and Krasnoyarsk Reservoir, Siberia. The first algorithm is technically simple and based on empirical equations of runoff slope length, slope steepness and soil infiltration. The second one includes a three-dimensional flow accumulation procedure and thus it is more sensitive to real surface structure. Both algorithms are ready to be used in practice. The results obtained indicate that, on average, the SFS width along banks of large rivers might be reduced, while in some cases it should be widened along the banks of small streams. Аннотация: The evaluation of biospheric role of the boreal forests in the accumulation of carbon is connected with the evaluation of organic matter (OM) pool in soils. The research sites were larch forests, they are situated on Nizhne-Tungusskoe Plateau. Larch forests of feather-moss and lichen types (110 and 380 years old) were formed on 'ochric podbur' soils. Litter stocks are 3.5-4.5 kg m-2 with thickness 10-25 cm. Cryomezomorphic northern taiga soils contains 38-73 t (carbon) ha-1. Pool of fast mineralized OM has average value 38.1 t (carbon) ha-1, including 20.5 and 6.4 t (Carbon) ha-1 of labile compounds on surface and in the soil, and 11.2 t (carbon) ha-1 of mobile OM. Microbial mass reaches 1.78-3.47 t (carbon) ha-1, its proportion is 3.6-4.9% of the total OM carbon. Zoomass of feather-moss larch forest is 0.20-0.61 * 10-2, in lichen larch forest -0.01-0.07 * 10-2 t (carbon) ha -1. A pool of resistant to biological decomposition and bonded to mineral soil matrix OM is 17.7 t (carbon) ha-1 and it varies from 18.6 to 29.0 in feather-moss larch forest, and from 6.4 to 17.0 t (carbon) ha-1 in lichen larch forest. Two-years field experiment has been performed to determine transformation rates of various plant litter fractions and to clarify the role of soil biota in these processes. The results showed participation of all biota groups in the decomposition of plant residues caused weight loss of larch-needles and root mortmass. Isolation of organic matter from all-size invertebrate groups leads to some decrease of decomposition activity. В© Springer 2006.
