forest and bog mosses -- ecology -- geography

Аннотация: Some results of the ecocenotic analysis of forest and bog mosses, widespread or locally occurring in the taiga zone of West Siberia, are described. The species were compared with respect to their edaphic requirements, and a relationship was observed between geographic variation in cenotic parameters and changes in macroconditions of the physical environment, primarily in lithologic, geomorphological, and climatic conditions. The results of analysis confirmed the existence of such a relationship, but moss species proved to differ in their response to changes in physiographic conditions.

Аннотация: An introduction is given to the geography of Russian forests and to the specific conditions of the study sites located along the 60degrees latitude east of Moscow (Fyedorovskoe) near the Ural Mountains (Syktivkar) and in Central Siberia near the Yennisei river (Zotino). The climatic conditions were similar at all three sites. The main ecological parameter that changes between European Russia and Siberia is the length of the growing season (230 d above 0 degreesC NE Moscow to 170 d above 0 degreesC in Central Siberia) and to a lesser extent precipitation (580 mm NE Moscow to 530 mm in Central Siberia). The experimental sites were generally similar to the regional conditions,. although the Tver region has less forest and more grassland than the central forest reserve, and the Komi region has slightly less wetland than the study area. The Krasnoyarsk region reaches from the arctic ocean to and central Asia and contains a significant proportion of non-forest land. The boreal forest of west and east Yennisei differs mainly with respect to wetlands, which cover almost half of the land area on the west bank. All sites are prone to disturbance. Heavy winds and drought or surplus water are the main disturbance factors in European Russia (a 15-20 yr cycle), and fire is the dominating disturbance factor in Siberia (220-375 yr for stand replacing fires).

Transformation of soil-protective functions of mountain forests under the influence of forest fires in the central ecological zone of the Baikal natural territory
/ Y. N. Krasnoshchekov // Geography and Natural Resources. - 2013. - Vol. 34, Is. 4. - P356-363, DOI 10.1134/S1875372813040094 . - ISSN 1875-3728
Аннотация: An analysis is made of the data from experimental investigations into the influence of fires on changes in the soil-protective functions of Siberian stone pine and pine forests in the southern part of the central ecological zone of the Baikal natural territory. The study revealed a negative influence of ground fires of the litter-humus type on changes in reserves and qualitative functional composition of forest litter and its moisture retention capacity as well as in water-physical properties of soils. Quantitative indices are provided for the liquid and solid overland runoff forming in burnt-over areas, depending on slope steepness, and on the intensity and temporal remoteness of past fires. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Transformation of climatic response in radial increment of trees depending on topoecological conditions of their occurrence
/ E. A. Babushkina [et al.] // Geography and Natural Resources. - 2011. - Vol. 32, Is. 1. - P80-86, DOI 10.1134/S1875372811010148 . - ISSN 1875-3728
Аннотация: We report the research results derived from identifying the regional climatic signal contained in the coniferous tree ring-width variability for different topoecological conditions in the forest-steppe of the Republic of Khakassia. It is found that under different growth conditions for trees of the same species the climatic signal undergoes a significant transformation. We demonstrate the possibility of using a combination of tree-ring chronologies of different tree species for an adequate dendroclimatic reconstruction of the leading climatic variables. Аннотация: An ecologo-phytocenotic classification of forest types has been worked out for the mountainous areas of the Western Transbaikalia. Using the floristic and ecologo-geographical criteria and the DCA ordination method, we identified seven groups of forest types belonging to two altitudinal-belt complexes. The resulting classification refines the existing understanding of the phytocenotic structure of forest cover under sharply continental climate conditions in the contact zone with island steppes of the Transbaikalia and serves the vegetation cover monitoring and modeling purposes. Аннотация: We have investigated the seasonal-dynamics parameters of functioning of microbocenoses and invertebrate complexes on overburden heaps of different ages as well as the recultivation technology for of the Borodinskoye brown-coal mine. The 20-year-old overburden heap with typical natural reforestation and formation of a coarse-humus horizon was characterized by the largest balance of microbiological processes of organic matter destruction, and by high numbers and diversity of microarthropods. The youngest heaps are characterized by an unbalance between organic matter mineralization-immobilization processes and predominance of pioneer invertebrate groups in the community. В© 2010.

Аннотация: Data from the " Biome" information system were used to construct an ordination of zonal categories of vegetation cover in southern Siberia along the axes of heat supply and continentality. The changes of climate that occurred from the end of the 1960. s to 2007 are estimated. It is shown that they can lead to transformation of the composition of potential forest vegetation in a number of regions. We discuss the forecasted and observed variants of long-term successions in different sectoral-zonal classes of subtaiga and forest-steppe, including the risk of a reduction in the areas of separate forest-forming species. Аннотация: The paper analyses the wetland cover of the plains using medium-resolution space photographs. A list of interpretational features, including systematic features (relating to the geography, the climate zone and the lithology and geomorphology) and direct features (morphological, phytocenotic) is given. On images, the morphology of peat bogs has universal diagnostic properties and may be used to detect edges on photographs. The structural and morphological map obtained by interpretation, serves as a basis for geographical extrapolation of key ground characteristics and various types of interpretable images of wetland.

Climatic conditionality of radial increment of conifers and hardwoods in the middle taiga subzone of Central Siberia
/ M. V. Skomarkova [et al.] // Geogr. Nat. Resour. - 2009. - Vol. 30, Is. 2. - P167-172, DOI 10.1016/j.gnr.2009.06.014 . - ISSN 1875-3728
Аннотация: Presented are the dendroclimatic research results on annual growth rings of spruce, fir, pine, birch and aspen growing in the middle taiga subzone of Central Siberia. The study established the general annual growth ring variability patterns for the conifers (spruce and fir) as well as for the hardwoods (birch and aspen), with the correlation coefficients between their chronologies estimated at 0.38 and 0.46 (p < 0.001), respectively. It is shown that under the given conditions the influence of the climatic factors accounts not more than for 53.5% of the variability in radial increment. For pine this influence is less clearly pronounced because of the content of the more mixed (compared with the other species of this territory) climatic signal. It is found that the temperature conditions of June are of first importance for all species under investigation. For birch and aspen the dependence of radial increment on the amount of precipitation in June is explained by moisture depletion at the period of the most active growth. В© 2009.

Constructing the tree-ring chronology and reconstructing summertime air temperatures in southern Altai for the last 1500 years
/ V. S. Myglan [et al.] // Geogr. Nat. Resour. - 2012. - Vol. 33, Is. 3. - P200-207, DOI 10.1134/S1875372812030031 . - ISSN 1875-3728
Аннотация: We have constructed and analyzed the 1896-year-long tree-ring chronology for the territory of the Altai Republic. The chronology was based on wood of live trees and remains of trunks of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) from the upper timberline (2300 m) of the Dzhelo river valley. The chronology agrees well with palaeoclimatic data and reflects the main climatic changes in the northern hemisphere for the last two millennia: an extraordinary decrease in increment after the year 536, "mean secular warming", the "Little Ice Age", and current warming. By calculating the response function between the tree-ring chronology for the Dzhelo and data from weather stations, it was possible to reconstruct the series of June-July air temperature variability for the last 1500 years. The chronology can be used in dating archaeological wood, i. e. in determining the calendar time at which archaeological monuments were constructed. В© 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
