Biochemistry of carbon and nitrogen in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / E. F. Vedrova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 281-292. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We evaluated parameters (stock and flux) carbon, nitrogen and ash element cycling in the plant-soil system. The study was performed in arolla pine, Scots pine, Siberian larch, Norway spruce, aspen and birch plantations established on Kemchug upland, Chulym-Yenisei denudational plain, in 1968-1972. Young ecosystems (age class 2) that have developed under relatively similar environmental conditions have thus accumulated different amounts of organic and mineral matter in biomass and detritus, mainly due to differences in major woody species characteristics. All ecosystems are a net atmosperic carbon sink, with a pooling rate of 1.81-4.43 t C ha -1 yr -1. The sink (NEP) is made up by C accumulation in stand biomass production, vegetation detritus, and soil humus and accounts for 46-76% of the total C allocated in annual increment; the main componentt is net C flux to biomass. The rate of N-min flux from soil pool to NPP is in fact in balance with that soil N-min accumulation in the arolla pine, larch, spruce, and birch plots. In addition, the ecosystems are characterized by a transitional cycling regime evident through non-balanced controlling organic and mineral matter stored in "plant-soil" system blocks.

Height increments and suevival of Pinus sylvestris climatypes in provenance trials in the western Trans- Baikal region
: материалы временных коллективов / T. N. Novikova // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 11-2. - С. 73-79. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Scots pine provenance trials established in Buryatia (western Trans-Baikal region) in Siberia were studied. The features of linear increment of 57 progeniers representing a significant part of the total Scots pine area in Russia are shown. Interpopulation variability in Scots pine progenies' linear increment index was found to increase in provenances during optimal moisture conditions during growing seasons. The correlation coefficients, between the linear incremewnt idexes and the climatype survival rate, showed a mostly positive link based on the contrast in conditions of the originating material populations.

Evidence of evergreen conifers invasion into larch dominated forests during recent decades
: материалы временных коллективов / V. I. Kharuk, K. J. Ranson, M. L. Dvinskaya // Environmental change in Siberia: earth observation, field studies and modelling. - Dordrecht et. al. : Springer, 2010. - С. 53-65. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The results obtained indicate a DNC and birch invasion into a traditional larch domination zone, and the connection of this phenomenon with climatic trends during last decades. On the western and southern margions DNC regeneration formed a second layer in the forest canopies, which could eventually replace the larch in the overstory. Larch as a species also responds to climatic trends: its radial increment significantly increased during last 3 decades, and this increase correlates with summer temperatures and precipitation. The other larch response is the migration into the trundra zone and a crown closure increase, as was found on the key-sites "Polar Ural"and "Ary-Mas". The resulting effect of this process may be that larch could reach the Arctic shore, a phenomenon that has happened in a former epoch, whereas the traditional area of larch dominance will turn to mixed taiga forest.

Аннотация: The tree response to climate trends is most likely observable in the forest-tundra ecotone where temperature limits tree growth. Here we show that trees in the forest-tundra ecotone of the mid of the south Siberian Mountains responded strongly to wasrmer temperatures during the past two decades. There was a growth increment increase, stand densification, regeneration propogation into the alpine tundra, and transformation of prostrate Siberian pine, larch and fir into another arboreal forms.

Аннотация: Warming induced (1) tree upward and northward migration and (2) krummholz transformation in alpine and northern ecotones, (3) a "dark needle conifers (DNC)" migration within "mixed taiga - zone of larch dominance" ecotone, (4) growth increment increase and stand denisification, (4) DNC proportion increase, which should lead an albedo decrease, amplifying warming at local scale. Observed radial and apical growth increment increases were correlated with both, air temperatures and atmospheric CO2 concentration increases.

Аннотация: The objects of research were pine stands, formed naturally in the former agricultural lands in Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe. Trial and control plots were established in the stands, after thinning of different intensity (93% and 57% of number of stems). The work is based on the experimental data, obtained during the analysis of transverse slices images of model trees at the root collar. Realization of the potential productivity of individual trees as a result of thinning is mostly expressed in trees of higher ranks, and only afetr intensive thinning.

Аннотация: Variation in radial increments of 28-year-old L. clones in response to changes in weather conditions during the period between 1986 and 2007 has been studied in the Sredneobskii Bor pine forest. Significant genotypic differences in the adaptive reaction norm of the clones have been revealed. It has been shown that the contribution of genotypic differences to the total variance of test characters is usually significant and depends both on the conditions of growing season and on a given increment character.

carbon budget -- logging -- phytomass -- coarse woody debris -- decomposition

Аннотация: Forest harvesting is a major human-caused disturbance affecting carbon budgets in forest ecosystems. This study was concerned with post-logging carbon pool changes in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Siberian fir (Abies sibirica) stands. To understand carbon budget recovery trends following logging, carbon stock and fluxes were measured in stands differing in time since logging. In both Scots pine and fir stands disturbed by logging, the tree phytomass contribution to the carbon budget decreased drastically, whereas the coarse woody debris (CWD) carbon pool exhibited a marked increase. Sixty years following logging, the Scots pine stand carbon storage was almost 70 % of that prior to logging and the ratio between the phytomass and soil organic matter was the same as before the disturbance. While the phytomass carbon showed a similar trend in the fir stand of the same age, it was less than on the control stand. In a 50-55-year-old fir stand, 26 years since harvesting, the phytomass carbon recovered only by 15 %. Siberian fir and Scots pine logging sites differed in CWD loading and decomposition rate. The phytomass dynamics and CWD loading values obtained suggest that Scots pine stands which have experienced logging are most likely carbon sinks, as was clear from the phytomass production exceeding organic matter decomposition-caused fluxes. Conversely, logged fir ecosystems are likely to be sources of carbon to the atmosphere due to a large CWD loading, faster rate of its decomposition, and slow phytomass increment.

Аннотация: The relative role of fire and of climate in determining canopy species composition and aboveground carbon stocks were investigated. Measurements were made along a transect extending from the dark taiga zone of central Siberia, where Picea and Abies dominate the canopy, into the Larix zone of eastern Siberia. We test the hypotheses that the change in canopy species composition is based (1) on climate-driven performance only, (2) on fire only, or (3) on fire-performance interactions. We show that the evergreen conifers Picea obovata and Abies sibirica are the natural late-successional species both in central and eastern Siberia, provided there has been no fire for an extended period of time. There are no changes in performance of the observed species along the transect. Fire appears to be the main factor explaining the dominance of Larix and of soil carbon. Of lesser influence were longitude as a proxy for climate, local hydrology and active-layer thickness. We can only partially explain fire return frequency, which is not only related to climate and land cover, but also to human behavior. Stand-replacing fires decreased from 300 to 50 yrs between the Yenisei Ridge and the upper Tunguska. Repeated non-stand-replacing surface fires eliminated the regeneration of Abies and Picea. With every 100 yrs since the last fire, the percentage of Larix decreased by 20%. Biomass of stems of single trees did not show signs of age-related decline. Relative diameter increment was 0.41 +/- 0.20% at breast height and stem volume increased linearly over time with a rate of about 0.36 t C ha(-1) yr(-1) independent of age class and species. Stand biomass reached about 130 t C ha(-1)(equivalent to about 520 m(3) ha(-1)). Individual trees of Larix were older than 600 yrs. The maximum age and biomass seemed to be limited by fungal rot of heart wood. 60% of old Larix and Picea and 30% of Pinus sibirica trees were affected by stem rot. Implications for the future role of fire and of plant diseases are discussed.

Changes in Content and Composition of Phenolic Acids during Growth of Xylem Cells of Scots Pine
[Text] / G. F. Antonova, T. V. Zheleznichenko, V. V. Stasova // Russ. J. Dev. Biol. - 2011. - Vol. 42, Is. 4. - P238-246, DOI 10.1134/S1062360411020032. - Cited References: 48. - This work was supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, project no. 06-04-49501. . - 9. - ISSN 1062-3604

Аннотация: The content and composition of alcohol soluble phenolic acids (PhAs) were studied during cell xylem growth in course of wood annual increment formation in the trunks of Scots pine. Cells of the cambium zone, two stages of expansion growth, and outset of secondary thickening zone (before lignification) within the period of formation of early wood xylem were subsequently isolated from trunk segments of 25-year-old trees with constant anatomical and histochemical control. The amount of free and bound forms of phenolic acids extracted from tissues by 80% ethanol, as well as their ethers and esters, were calculated both per dry weight and per cells. The substantial alteration in content, proportion of fractions and composition of acids has been found between the cambium zone and the outset of secondary thickening of tracheids, and the character of variation depended on the calculation method. The amount of free and bound PhAs and esters and especially ethers calculated per cell had increased at the first stage of extension growth, reduced at the second, and increased in the outset of secondary wall deposition. The pool of bound acids was more than acids by 2-5 times depending on the stage of development of the cells. Sinapic and ferulic acids dominate among free hydroxycinnamic acids. The composition and the content of hydroxycinnamic acids in esters and ethers also depended on the stage of development of the cells. p-Coumaric and sinapic acids were the main aglycons in ethers in the cambium and sinapic and caffeic acids were in the other stages. The esters from cambium included mostly p-coumaric acid and those at other stages of development were sinapic and ferulic acids. The esters included benzoic acid at the first stages of growth. The pool of these esters decreased from the first phase of growth until the outset of cell wall thickening. The level of free benzoic acid increased respectively.

Аннотация: Results of measurements and calculations of carbon budget parameters of forests and swamps of Siberia are reported. The zonal variability of reserves (and an increment in reserves) of carbon in forest and swamp ecosystems is characterized, carbon dioxide fluxes are measured directly by means of microeddy pulsations, and an uncertainty brought into the calculation of carbon budget parameters by forest fires is estimated.

Аннотация: A 1138-year tree-ring chronology has been constructed for the region of the Bol'shoi Avam River (the Putoran Plateau). Its comparison with millennial chronologies for the Taimyr Peninsula and Mangazeya has shown that all these chronologies are fairly synchronous with respect to both high-frequency (annual) and low-frequency (long-term) components, although each has its specific regional features. The results of dendroclimatic analysis provide evidence for the prevailing influence of air temperature in July (compared to that in June) on the radial growth of larch in the middle reaches of the Bol'shoi Avam. Consistent long-term changes in radial tree increment (and in summer air temperature) in a large sector of the Subarctic over the past 1000 years have been revealed.

Аннотация: The pools of nitrogen in different blocks of forest ecosystems and its cycle in the soil are considered. It is shown that the bulk of nitrogen concentrates in the soil and dead organic matter (necromass) of an ecosystem. The nitrogen pool of forest litters and soils consists by 83-93% of the inert compounds that cannot be involved in the biological cycle. Mineralization of organic nitrogen-containing substances in the litters and soils usually yields ammonium as an end product. The amount of nitrogen mineralized over the growing season is partially expended for annual plant increment (30-65%) and immobilization (12-17%), with its large proportion being found in the soil.

Аннотация: Radial increment and tree-ring structure were studied in the progenies of 16 climatypes growing in the southern taiga subzone. The coefficients of correlation between tree-ring parameters of the local and other climatypes were as high as 0.7-0.9, and the synchronism coefficients were higher than 0.7. Climatypes of northern origin were an exception. The sensitivity of the parameters of the tree ring late wood decreased with an increase in the latitude at which the seeds for establishing the cultures were collected. Estimation of Euclidean distances in the space of tree-ring parameters showed that the northern climatypes differed from the southern taiga types by no more than 15%. The climatypes from the middle taiga and the forest-steppe exhibited smaller differences (10-11%).

Аннотация: A method was proposed for quantitatively reconstructing structural development over time of even-aged monospecific forests and was applied to a larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) stand in Siberia. It relies on samples obtained at one-time observation and some simple assumptions considered general in even-aged stands. Tree-ring data taken from breast height of a group of the largest trees and those measured at various stem heights of several individuals representing the range of tree sizes in the plot are used for the estimation. Stand density and parameters of stem volume distribution at a given time in the past were calculated with the "stem slenderness index," and with an assumption of the -3/2 power distribution for the distribution function of stem size, respectively. By developing time-dependent allometric relationships for individual tree attributes, the whole-stand values of stem volume and its increment were reconstructed for several decades of stand development. Estimated history of the changes in stand density, total stem volume, and stem volume growth for the dense larch stand examined, mostly agreed with a separate estimation by the self-thinning assumption.

Аннотация: We assessed above- and belowground biomass and net primary production (NPP) of a mature Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. forest (240-280 years old) established on permafrost soils in central Siberia. Specifically, we investigated annual carbon budgets in roots in relation to root system development and availability of soil resources. Total stand biomass estimated by allometry was about 39 Mg ha(-1). Root biomass (17 Mg ha(-1)) comprised about 43% of total biomass. Coarse root (greater than or equal to 5 mm in diameter) biomass was about twice that of fine roots (< 5 mm). The aboveground biomass/root biomass ratio (T/R) of the larch stand was about unity, which is much less than that of other boreal and subalpine conifer forests. The proportion of fine roots in total root biomass (35%) was relatively high compared with other cold-climate evergreen conifer forests. Total NPP, defined as the sum of annual biomass increment of woody parts and needle biomass, was estimated to be 1.8 Mg ha(-1) year(-1). Allocation of total NPP to needle production was 56%. The proportion of total NPP in belowground production (27%) was less than for evergreen taiga forests. However, belowground NPP was probablyunderestimatedbecauserootmortalitywasexcluded. We conclude that L. gmelinii trees invested annual carbon gains largely into needle production or roots, or both, at the expense of growth of aboveground woody parts. This carbon allocation pattern, which resulted in the construction of exploitative root networks, appeared to be a positive growth response to the nutrient-poor permafrost soil of central Siberia.
