    Remote sensing of photosynthetic-light-use efficiency of a Siberian boreal forest

Аннотация: The relationship between a physiological index called the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) and photosynthetic light-use-efficiency (LUE) of a Siberian boreal forest during the winter-spring transition, or green-up period, was investigated in 2000. During this time the photosynthetic apparatus was considered under stress as a result of extremes of temperature (from -20 to 35 degreesC) coupled with a high radiation load. Reflectance measurements of four stands were made from a helicopter-mounted spectroradiometer and PRI was calculated from these data. Eddy covariance towers were operating at the four stands and offered a means to calculate LUE. A significant linear relationship was apparent between PRI, calculated from the helicopter spectral data, and LUE, calculated from the eddy covariance data, for the four sites sampled. Reflectance measurements were also made of a Scots pine stand from the eddy covariance tower. Needles were also sampled during the time of spectral data acquisition for xanthophyll pigment determination. Strong linear relationships were observed among PRI, the epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle (EPS) and LUE over the green-up period and the diurnal cycle at the canopy scale.

    Performance of various methods of fire weather danger rating in the South Lake Baikal forests

Аннотация: We tested Russian indices: Nesterov index (PN, 1968), Leningrad Research Institute index PV-1, 1975), Krasnoyarsk Forest Institute index (PVG, 1990) as well as Canadian index (FWI,1987) - in the South Lake Baikal area on the territory of the Sludyanka Forest Office (351 thousand ha). The performance criterion was the correlation between the index value and the average daily number of active fires (according to index gradations) within spring and summer-autumn periods of a fire season. Weight of every point was teken into account. None of the methods tested showed the superior overall performance. A new method of local scales elaborated in V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk was used.

In addition, an evaluation of the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System is being carried out to assess its usefulness in Russian fire management operations.

Аннотация: Research to monitor and document surface fire behavior characteristics in Scots pine forests of Central Siberia. Fifteen successful burns were conducted under a range of burning conditions (2000-2003). Fuel consumption, depth of burn, rate of spread, and fire line intensity were successfully modelled using the Russian Moisture Index (PV-1) or the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System as the independent variables, which should prove useful in suppression efforts undertaken by Russian fire agencies.

    Potential change in lodgepole pine site index and distribution under climatic change in Alberta

Аннотация: We estimated the impact of global climate change on lodgepole pine site productivity in Alberta based on the Alberts Climate Model and the A2 SRES climate change scenario projections from three global circulation models (CGCM2, HADCM3, and ECHAM4). Cosiderable warming ia apparent in all three models. On average, the increases in mean GDD5 (growing degree-day 5 degrees C) are 18%, 38%, and 65% by the 2020s, 2050s, respectively. Change in precipitation is essentially nil. This results in proportioanal increases in dryness index. We used the dryness index to predict the potential future range and GDD5 to predict its potential productivity.

    Height increments and suevival of Pinus sylvestris climatypes in provenance trials in the western Trans- Baikal region

Аннотация: Scots pine provenance trials established in Buryatia (western Trans-Baikal region) in Siberia were studied. The features of linear increment of 57 progeniers representing a significant part of the total Scots pine area in Russia are shown. Interpopulation variability in Scots pine progenies' linear increment index was found to increase in provenances during optimal moisture conditions during growing seasons. The correlation coefficients, between the linear incremewnt idexes and the climatype survival rate, showed a mostly positive link based on the contrast in conditions of the originating material populations.

    Forest disturbance assessment using satellite data of moderate and low resolution

Аннотация: Envisat-MERIS and SPOT Vegetation satelitte data were tested for estimation of vegetation cover disturbance caused by fire and industrial pollution in central and northern Siberia test sites, respectively. MERIS data were used to assess forest disturbance levels on burned sites in Angara region. Chlorophyll indexes (REP and MTCI) were found to allow identifying up to five forest disturbance levels due to high space-borne sensor resolution and sensitivity to chlorophyll content of vegetation. The current vegetation condition was assessed using MTCI index in the northern (Norilsk) test region. The lowest index values calculated for the most severely disturbed vegetation near Norilsk were found to correlate with sulphur concentrations in larch and spruce needles. Another approach to estimating spatial and temporal trends of vegetation condition used the 1998-2005 SPOT-Vegetation satellite data. The relationships obtained between MTCI, NDVI values, and forest mortality were based upon to map the 1998-2005 forest degradation zone dynamics in the northern test site.

Аннотация: This paper presents an intercomparison of two burned area datasets, the L3JRC daily global burned area dataset derived from SPOT-VEGETATION and FFID burned area dataset from MODIS. Burned area dynamics are presented and the influence of climate on the fire regime is discussed. Feedbacks of the fire dynamics to the climate system are evaluated. The Russian fire danger index is presented and compared to satellite observation of fires.

Аннотация: An emperical fire study, using 2 to 4-ha experimental burn plots, was conducted in Central Siberia to obtain data to develop fire behaviour models for Scots pine forests. Fuel consumptiuon (depth of burn and fuel consumption) was predicted using the Russian Moisture Index (PV-1) or the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index (FWI) System. However, only the FWI System could be used to model fire behaviour characteristics (rate of spread and fireline intensity), as wind speed is an important input factor in its calculatiion and is not accounted for in the PV-1.

Аннотация: The complex investignation of fir-pine forest in Kuznetskii Alatau Mountains has been shown that in this region damaged forest biocenoses are dominated. The specific character of fir trees damage has been noted. The chemical analysis showd the accumulation in needle of low index biocenosis sulfates and mercury and decrease of zinc maintenance. We believe that complex character of causes of the decline has a regional specific. The plant biotecnologies for mass production genetically improved seedling of Siberian pine and fir for reforestation programs are developed.

Аннотация: The prediction results of large-scale forest fire development are given for Siberia. To evaluate the fire risks, the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System (CFFWIS) and the Russian moisture indices (MI1 and MI2) were compared on the basis of the data of a network of meteorological stations as input weather parameters. Parameters of active fires were detected daily from the NOAA satellite data for the period of 1996-2008. To determine the length of the fire danger season, the snow cover fractions from Terra/MODIS data (2001-2008) were used. The features of fire development on territories with different types of flammable fuel are considered. The statistical analysis of the areas and number of fires typical of each vegetation class is made with the use of the GLC2000 vegetation map. A positive correlation (similar to 0.45, p < 0.05) between the cumulative area of local fires and the MI1 and Canadian BUI and DMC indices is revealed. The Canadian ISI and FWI indices describe best the diurnal dynamics of fire areas. The above correlations are higher (similar to 0.62, p < 0.05) when we select the fires larger than 2000-10000 ha in size for the forested areas. Other cases point to the lack of a linear relation between the fire area and the values of all indices, because the fire spread depends on many natural and anthropogenic factors.

Аннотация: This study focused on structural analysis of ground carbon storage following fires in light conifer stands of the Lower Angara region (Siberia, Russia). Experimental fires of varying frontal intensity were conducted at Scots pine and mixed larch forests of southern taiga. Considerable amounts of surface and ground forest fuels (21-38 tC ha(-1)) enhanced low-to high-intensity fires. Post-fire carbon storage decreased by 16-49% depending on fire intensity and rate of spread, with depth of burn being 0.9-6.6 cm. Carbon emissions varied from 4.48 to 15.89 t ha(-1) depending on fire intensity and forest type. Depth of burn and carbon emissions for four major site types were correlated with a weather-based fire hazard index.

Аннотация: A spatial description of climatic changes along circumpolar regions is presented based on larch tree-ring width (TRW) index, latewood density (MXD), delta 13C, delta 18O of whole wood and cellulose chronologies from eastern Taimyr (TAY) and north-eastern Yakutia (YAK), Russia, for the period 1900-2006, in comparison with a delta 13C cellulose chronology from Finland (FIN) and a delta 18O ice core record from Greenland (GISP2). Correlation analysis showed a strong positive relationships between TRW, MXD, stable isotope chronologies and June, July air temperatures for TAY and YAK, while the precipitation signal was reflected differently in tree-ring parameters and stable isotope data for the studied sites. Negative correlations were found between July, August precipitation from TAY and stable isotopes and MXD, while May, July precipitations are reflected in MXD and stable isotopes for the YAK. No significant relationships were found between TRW and precipitation for TAY and YAK. The areas of significant correlations between July gridded temperatures and TRW, MXD and stable isotopes show widespread dimension from east to west for YAK and from north to south for TAY. The climate signal is stronger expressed in whole wood than in cellulose for both Siberian regions. The comparison analysis between delta 13C cellulose chronologies from FIN and TAY revealed a similar declining trend over recent decades, which could be explained by the physiological effect of the increasing atmospheric CO(2). TRW, MXD and delta 13C chronologies from TAY and YAK show a negative correlation with North Atlantic Oscillation index, while the delta 18O chronologies show positive correlations, confirming recent warming trend at high latitudes. The strong correlation between GISP2 and delta 18O of cellulose from YAK chronologies reflects the large-scale climatic signal connected by atmospheric circulation patterns expressed by precipitation.

Аннотация: Some indices of individual variability in annual growth of Siberian larch in open woodlands of Khakassia are compared. In the Shira forest-steppe the Siberian larch exhibits high sensitivity of annual growth and diverse responses to changes in vegetative conditions. Stabilizing selection maintains dominance of trees with moderately sensitive annual growth. Such trees are the most vital. It has been shown that the adaptive norm of population's response and the individual variability of annual growth positively correlate with the total annual precipitation. The sensitivity index of annual growth is a better indicator of the genetic structure of the population than the coefficient of variability of annual growth indices.

Аннотация: Gmelin larch ( Larix gmelinii) forests are representative vegetation in the continuous permafrost region of Central Siberia. Information on the carbon budget is still limited for this Siberian larch taiga in comparison to boreal forests in other regions, while the larch forests are expected to play a key role in the global carbon balance due to their wide distribution over North-East Eurasia. The authors reported results of eddy covariance CO2 flux measurements at a mature Gmelin larch stand in Central Siberia, Russia (64 degrees 16'N, 100 degrees 12'E, 250m a.s.l.). The measurements were conducted during one growing season (June-early September in 2004). CO2 uptake was initiated in early June and increased sharply until late June, which was closely related to the phenology of the larch trees (i.e., bud-break and needle flush). Maximum half-hourly net CO2 uptake was similar to 6 mu mol m(-2) s(-1). Maximum daily net uptake of similar to 2 g C m(-2) day(-1) occurred at the end of June and in mid-July. Cumulative net uptake was 76-78 g C m(-2), indicating that the mature larch forest acted as a net sink for CO2 during the growing season (91 days). In comparison with other boreal forests, however, the magnitude of net CO2 uptake and night-time release of the forest, and cumulative net CO2 uptake were lower. We suggest that lower net ecosystem CO2 uptake of the study stand was primarily associated with low leaf area index.

Аннотация: The elicitor activity of compounds extracted from the mycelia of six species of phytopathogenic fungi was assessed from the sizes of necrotic lesions on the external surface of the living trunk phloem of five coniferous species inhabiting Siberia: Siberian larch (Larix sibirica L.), Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.), Siberian fir (Abies sibirica L.), and cedar pine (Pinus sibirica (Rupr.) Mayr.). The compounds for inoculation were extracted from the mycelium of ascomycetes imperfect, and basidium fungi; the living mycelia of these fungi were also used. The fungal extract or mycelium was placed into the hollows 7 mm in diameter in the trunk bark. Infection triggered the formation of hypersensitivity necrotic lesions in the inner bark exceeding in size those appeared after control wounding of four tree species (larch, pine, spruce, and cedar); fir was an exclusion. In experiments with tree trunks and conifer calluses, a dependence of immune response parameters (the sizes of necrotic lesions and the content of lignin and bound proanthocyanidins) on the quantity of the fungal preparation was elucidated. The largest necrotic lesions appeared after injection of 500 mu g of the fungal preparation into the hollow in the trunk, and its higher quantities did not increase the indices measured. The size of the necrotic lesion on the trunk bark is supposed to be used as a promising index characterizing the level of tree immunity and tolerance under various ecological conditions.

Аннотация: A comparison of two Siberian moth populations from the Altai Republic (feeding on Siberian fir) and the Tyva Republic (feeding on Siberian larch) has revealed no differences between them with respect to ecophysiological parameters of larval growth and feeding on needles of the same conifer species under laboratory conditions. The index of appropriateness of food plants for the larvae from both populations decreases in the series larch > fir > spruce > pine. The age-related dynamics of parameters characterizing the feeding and growth of larvae are independent of the population to which the insects belong.

Аннотация: We present results of individual-based root system measurement and analysis applied for Larix gmelinii trees growing on the continuous permafrost region of central Siberia. The data of root excavation taken from the three stands were used for the analyses; young (26 years old), mature (105 years old), and uneven-aged over-mature stand (220 years old). In this article, we highlight two topics: (1) factors affecting spatio-temporal pattern of root system development, and (2) interactions between aboveground (i.e., crown) and belowground (i.e., root) competition. For the first topic, the detailed observation of lateral roots was applied to one sample tree of the overmature stand. The tree constructed a superficial (< 30 cm in depth) and rather asymmetric root system, and each lateral root expanded mainly into elevated mounds rather than depressed troughs. This indicated that spatial development of an individual root system was largely affected by microtopography (i.e., earth hummocks). For these lateral roots, elongation growth curves were reconstructed using annual-ring data, and annual growth rates and patterns were compared among them. The comparison suggested that temporal root system development is associated with differences in carbon allocation among the lateral roots. For the second topic, we examined relationships between individual crown projection area (CA) and horizontal rooting area (RA) for the sample trees of each stand. RA was almost equal to CA in the young stand, while RA was much larger (three or four times) than CA in the mature and overmature stands. Two measures of stand-level space occupation, crown area index (aboveground: CAI; sum of CAs per unit land area) and rooting area index (belowground: RAI; sum of RAs), were estimated in each stand. The estimates of RA1 (1.3-1.8 m(2) m(-2)) exceeded unity in all stands. In contrast, CAI exceeded unity (1.3 m(2) m(-2)) only in the young stand, and was much smaller (< 0.3 m(2) m(-2)) in the two older stands. These between-stand differences in RAI-CAI relationships suggest that intertree competition for both aboveground and belowground spaces occurred in the young stand, but only belowground competition still occurred in the two older stands. Based on this finding, we hypothesized that competition below the ground may become predominant as a stand ages in L. gmelinii forests. Methodological limitations of our analysis are also discussed, especially for the analysis using the two indices of space occupation (CAI, RAI).

    Impact of the Arctic Oscillation pattern on interannual forest fire variability in Central Siberia

Аннотация: Russia's forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle. Because of their scale and interannual variability, forest fires can change the direction of the net carbon flux over Eurasia. 2002 and 2003 were the first two consecutive years in the atmospheric record in which the carbon content rose by more than 2 ppm per year. Northern Hemisphere fires could be the reason. We show that 2002 and 2003 were the two years with the largest fire extent in Central Siberia since 1996 using new measurements of burned forest area in Central Siberia derived from remote sensing. To quantify the relationship between Siberian forest fires and climate variability, we compare these measurements with time-series of large-scale climatic indices for the period 1992-2003. This paper is amongst the first studies that analyse statistical relationships between interannual variability of forest fires in Russia and climate indices. Significant relationships of annual burned forest area with the Arctic Oscillation, summer temperatures, precipitation, and the El Nino index NINO4 were found (p0.1). In contrast, we find no significant relation with the El Nino indices NINO1, NINO3 or SOI (p0.1). Interannual forest fire variability in Central Siberia could best be explained by a combination of the Arctic Oscillation index and regional summer temperatures (r(2)=0.80).

Аннотация: A method was proposed for quantitatively reconstructing structural development over time of even-aged monospecific forests and was applied to a larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) stand in Siberia. It relies on samples obtained at one-time observation and some simple assumptions considered general in even-aged stands. Tree-ring data taken from breast height of a group of the largest trees and those measured at various stem heights of several individuals representing the range of tree sizes in the plot are used for the estimation. Stand density and parameters of stem volume distribution at a given time in the past were calculated with the "stem slenderness index," and with an assumption of the -3/2 power distribution for the distribution function of stem size, respectively. By developing time-dependent allometric relationships for individual tree attributes, the whole-stand values of stem volume and its increment were reconstructed for several decades of stand development. Estimated history of the changes in stand density, total stem volume, and stem volume growth for the dense larch stand examined, mostly agreed with a separate estimation by the self-thinning assumption.
