As predicted by the enemy release hypothesis, plants are supposedly less attacked by herbivores in their introduced range than in their native range. However, the nature of the natural enemies, in particular their degree of specificity may also affect the level of enemy escape. It is therefore expected that ectophagous invertebrate species, being generally considered as more generalists than endophagous species, are more prompt to colonise alien plants. In Swiss, Siberian and Russian Far East arboreta, we tested whether alien woody plants are less attacked by native herbivorous insects than native congeneric woody plant species. We also tested the hypothesis that leaf miners and gall makers show stronger preference for native woody plants than external leaf chewers. In all investigated regions, leaf miners and gall makers were more abundant and showed higher species richness on native woody plants than on congeneric alien plants. In contrast, external leaf chewers did not cause more damage to native plants than to alien plants, possibly because leaf chewers are, in general, less species specific than leaf miners and gall makers. These results, obtained over a very large number of plant-enemy systems, generally support the hypothesis that alien plants partly escape from phytophagous invertebrates but also show that different feeding guilds may react differently to the introduction of alien plants.

Defense response of pine stem phloem to wounding and treatment with mycelial extracts from Ceratocystis laricicola

Аннотация: Ophiostomatoid fungi colonize the conducting tissues of conifer stems, the phloem and the xylem. These pathogenic fungi penetrate into the stem through injuries made by xylophagous insects vectoring these pathogens. In this study the response of the phloem of Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) to wounding (treatment 1) was compared with the response to wounding combined with application of high-molecular-weight compounds isolated from the mycelium of the ophiostomatoid fungus Ceratocystis laricicola Redfern & Minter (treatment 2). Both treatments induced the appearance of necrosis in the inner bark, the formation of periderm separating living and dead tissues, and formation of the callus alongside the wound perimeter. In addition, the bark accumulated lignin, bound proanthocyanidins, and resins, with a parallel decrease in the content of free proanthocyanidins, low-molecular-weight carbohydrates, and non-lignin components of the cell wall (P > 0.95). The size of necrotic spots, as well as changes in the content of most substances, were significantly higher in the treatment 2 than in the treatment 1 (P > 0.95). The accumulation of lignin in cell walls of phloem sieve cells was delayed in the treatment 2 as compared with that in the treatment 1. This suggested that the mycelial extract temporarily inhibited lignification at the early stage of the wound response. This disturbance of the cell wall protective transformation led to the hypothesis that the fungal suppressors retard the repair of inner bark injured by insects, thereby favoring the invasion of conifer tissues by ophiostomatoid fungi.

Аннотация: A model of the population dynamics of insects has been developed, which takes into account the food consumption by insects and the reaction of food plants to the damage. Equations have been derived that describe the relationship between the coefficient of insect reproduction, the weight of females, the energetic effectiveness of the food consumption by insects, and the reaction of food plants. The scenarios of population outbreaks have been analyzed as a function of the weight of females in the stable state. The results of modeling have been compared with the data of natural observations.

Аннотация: A comparison of two Siberian moth populations from the Altai Republic (feeding on Siberian fir) and the Tyva Republic (feeding on Siberian larch) has revealed no differences between them with respect to ecophysiological parameters of larval growth and feeding on needles of the same conifer species under laboratory conditions. The index of appropriateness of food plants for the larvae from both populations decreases in the series larch > fir > spruce > pine. The age-related dynamics of parameters characterizing the feeding and growth of larvae are independent of the population to which the insects belong.

Аннотация: During 1993-1996, in central Siberia, a silkmoth (Dendrolimus superans sibiricus Tschetw.) infestation damaged approximately 700 000 ha of fir, Siberian pine and spruce stands. Temporal (1995-1997) Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images were used for pest outbreak monitoring of this event. Damaged stands were detected, with heavy (50-75% dead and dying trees) plus very heavy (75%) levels of damage classified. Summer and winter images were used for delineation of the northern border of the region of pest outbreaks. The Siberian taiga insects were classified with respect to their harmfulness to forests, based on the frequency Of Outbreaks, the size of the damaged territory, and the available food sources based on forest type.

Аннотация: Food energy expenditures by gypsy moth at different developmental stages under conditions of feeding on larch needles are described. The distribution of total food energy (%) for metabolism, the formation of exuvia (throughout ontogeny), and the formation of an adult insect is assessed. The proportion of food energy lost with excrements over the entire period of feeding is the same (58%) in females and males. The assimilated part of food energy is distributed differently: energy expenditures for the formation of exuvia and adult insects are greater in females than in males. The proportion of food energy expended for metabolism throughout the insect life span is approximately 30% in both females and males.

Аннотация: A game theory model of insect population dynamics is proposed. For the case when the population may be in one of two states: when physiological processes are directed to growth and reproduction, and when physiological processes are directed to the development of defense reactions, outbreaks of mass reproduction of insect populations may occur in conditions when population and environment have the <>, and the state of population and environment depends on their state at the previous time moment. In the framework of the model, the well known effect of insect phase variation during the outbreak of reproduction is explained.

Аннотация: Species of Leptographium are well-known inhabitants of conifers in the Northern Hemisphere, in which they cause a blue-stain. They are also known to be associated with insects, especially bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). Surveys of dying stands of Siberian fir (Abies sibirica) have resulted in the consistent isolation of an unknown Leptographium from the galleries of the fir sawyer beetle, Monochamus urussovi (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). This fungus is responsible for the blue-stain in living trees. Comparison with known species of Leptographium led to the conclusion that it had not been previously described, and the name Leptographium sibiricum sp. nov, is introduced here.

Аннотация: Theoretical morphology should include methods that allow to determine limits of discrete variability of organisms of the given taxon. it is possible to determine the multitude of possible factors based on the demands of natural selection to the given structure under given conditions. The author presents a number of such multitudes that describe the variability of salamander tongue apparatus, kinematics of flapping night in insects and wing shape of birds from the order Ciconiiformes. Another approach is based on mechanisms that rule the morphogenesis of individuals of the given taxon in particulate environment. Examples of morphogenetic multitude are illustrated by the variability of location of organs on plant stems, morphology of mollusc shells and colonies of hydroids polyps. All examples show that existing phenotypes occupy a compact area in the space of theoretically possible forms so the multitude of realized phenotypes does not have free space. If some free space is discovered it means that corresponding forms of life exist in nature but still are not registered and investigated.

The models ''resource-consumer'' taking into consideration the quantitative changes of resource
[Текст] / O. V. Tarasova, V. G. Suhovolsky // Zhurnal Obshchei Biol. - 1997. - Vol. 58, Is. 3. - С. 94-106. - Cited References: 9 . - 13. - ISSN 0044-4596

Аннотация: The authors consider three interaction models ''resource - consumer''. ''Null model'' is basic for the rest ones because in its frame the antibiosis of feeding objects does not take into consideration. According to reparation model feeding objects be either accessible for consumption or exist in reparation state if the high concentration of protection substances does not allow the population of consumers to continue feeding. Complicated model includes three states of feeding object: it is accessible and not attacked by insects, it is accessible and attacked and feeding object exists in reparation state. This model takes into consideration a set of different effects, for instance the effect of slow development of reparation processes. The changes taking place under pollution influence with different parameters of ''resource - consumer''interaction are characterised. The authors suggest the classification of different ''resource - consumer'' models based on resource characters. All models show the exponential decrease in the portion of non-damaged feeding objects while they contact with consumers. Change of this portion allows to measure the rate of consumer attack, whereas the dynamic of total number of damages characterizes the reparation characteristics. The authors investigate the damage of Populus leaves by insects in plots situated in Krasnoyarsk in regions with different antropogenic influence. The dynamic of damages shows the high degree of consent with the models. They can be useful for entomological indication to evaluate the state of separate trees or the whole stand.
