Seasonal and annual variations in the photosynthetic productivity and carbon balance of a central Siberian pine forest
/ J. Lloyd, O. Shibistova et al // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 590-610

Аннотация: We present a first analysis of data (June 1998 to December 2000) from the long-term eddy covariance site established in a Pinus sylvestris stand near Zotino in central Siberia as part of the EUROSIBERIAN CARBONFLUX project. As well as examining seasonal patterns in netecosystem exchange (N-E), daily, seasonal and annual estimates of the canopy photosynthesis (or gross primary productivity, G(P)) were obtained using N-E and ecosystem respiration measurements. Although the forest was a small (but significant) source of CO2 throughout the snow season (typically mid-October to early May) there was a rapid commencement of photosynthetic capacity shortly following the commencement of above-zero air temperatures in spring: in 1999 the forest went from a quiescent state to significant photosynthetic activity in only a few days. Nevertheless, canopy photosynthetic capacity was observed to continue to increase slowly throughout the summer months for both 1999 and 2000, reaching a maximum capacity in early August. During September there was a marked decline in canopy photosynthesis which was only partially attributable to less favourable environmental conditions. This suggests a reduction in canopy photosynthetic capacity in autumn, perhaps associated with the cold hardening process. For individual time periods the canopy. photosynthetic rate was mostly dependent upon incoming photon irradiance. However, reductions in both canopy conductance and overall photosynthetic rate in response to high canopy-to-air vapour differences were clearly evident on hot dry days. The relationship between canopy conductance and photosynthesis was examined using Cowan's notion of optimality in which stomata serve to maximise the marginal evaporative cost of plant carbon gain. The associated Lagrangian multiplier (lambda) was surprisingly constant throughout the growing season. Somewhat remarkably, however, its value was markedly different between years, being 416 mol mol(-1) in 1999 but 815 mol mol(-1) in 2000. Overall the forest was a substantial sink for CO2 in both 1999 and 2000: around 13 Mol C m(-2) a(-1). Data from this experiment, when combined with estimates of net primary productivity from biomass sampling suggest that about 20% of this sink was associated with increasing plant biomass and about 80% with an increase in the litter and soil organic carbon pools. This high implied rate of carbon accumulation in the litter soil organic matter pool seems unsustainable in the long term and is hard to explain on the basis of current knowledge.

Аннотация: It is marked, that during four year period of research soil respiration rate was essentially dependent on both microrelief elements (0.4-5.umol CO2/m2/s) and meteorological conditions of a year (1.0-3.77 umol CO2/m2/s). For the control plot, irrespectively for microrelief, the presence of powerfully developed litter and great number of roots have had the main direct effect on CO2-emission.

Аннотация: Between 72 and 88% of carbon (C) loss in forest litter decomposition returns to the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide. The share of water-soluble organic products does not exceed 3-4%. Between 8% under spruce and 25% under aspen and pine of the total C loss from litter organic matter goes to the formation of humus. Decomposition intensity of the dead organic matter on the soil surface is close to annual litterfall income (except under cedar). The specific rate of decomposition processes among the coniferous litters is minimum for cedar (167 mg C g-1 yr-1) and maximum for larch (249 mg C-1 yr-1). The spicific rate of decomposition of organic residues under aspen and birch canopies are 344 and 362 mg C-1 yr-1.

We examine the data from experimental investigations into the post-fire dynamics of Siberian stone pine forests in Southern Cisbaikalia. The analysis revealed that creeping fires of the litter-humus type in dry years constitute the main destructive factor in the dynamics of Siberian stone pine forests. Creeping fires involve desiccation of trees, while viability of Siberian stone pine trees that have survived the fire depends on the character and severity of fire-related tree injuries. We provide a characteristic of the lower layers of vegetation and its dynamics under the influence of fires of different intensities. It is shown that creeping fires have a negative influence on changes in reserves, qualitative fiber length distribution of organogenic soil horizons, and on their chemical composition.

Organic matter -- soil cover -- information system -- soils of Russia

Аннотация: An automated information system making it possible to estimate spatial distribution of soil organic carbon pool with a high spatial resolution (1 km(2)) has been developed. According to the obtained estimates, the total pool of organic carbon in the 1-m-deep soil layer on the territory of Russia reaches 317.1 Pg; the average organic carbon density in this layer for the entire Russia constitutes 19.2 kg C/m(2). Of this amount, 14.4 Pg (or 0.90 kg C/m(2)) is stored in the litter horizon. The developed algorithm allows us to refine the results with the acquisition of new data on soils, vegetation, and the degree of their disturbance, which is particularly important in the changing world.

Pyrogenic transformation -- taiga -- temperature -- moisture

Аннотация: Pyrogenic transformations of the physical state of cryogenic soils in the southern and middle taiga were investigated. The long-term dynamics of the microclimate on burns and the soil temperature and moisture to the depth of 120 cm were studied. Data on the postfire restoration of the ground cover are presented. Experiments on artificial sprinkling of burned areas differing in the degree of the burning out of the forest litter, the slope gradient, etc., have been performed. An experimental model demonstrating the relationships between the surface runoff and five environmental factors has been proposed. The pyrogenic destruction of the ground cover and the lower phytocenosis layers was accompanied by significant disturbances of the microclimate and anomalous thawing of the permafrost on the burns. In the pine stand on the colluvial fan after the intense fire, the soil temperature at the depth of 10 cm ( in the summer) exceeded the control value by 3-5 degrees C; in the larch forest on the southern slope of the Stanovoi Ridge, it increased by 1.5-2.0 times after the fire of medium intensity. On the mountain slopes, the surface runoff was significantly intensified, which resulted in drastic environmental and silvicultural consequences.

Аннотация: A typological series of native Betula pubescens Ehrh. dendrocenoses along the channel of a river crossing a bog was studied. The variability of the mineral element reserves is described by geostatistical methods as the sum of a trend, autocorrelation, and random components. The contribution of deterministic and random components has been assessed in the years with average precipitation and in the year of 2007 with high and long-term flooding. The empirical variograms and the parameters of the model variograms are presented. The class of the spatial correlation of the ash reserves is described. A primary cause of the ash content's variability is the specific water regime, which is determined by the following: (i) the abundance and duration of the spring floods responsible for the silt mass brought by the river and (ii) the draining effect of the intrabog river, the distance from which provided the formation in the forest of the ground cover with the specific species composition and ash content. The falloff of the arboreal layer in the bog birch forests formed the fundamental mineral background of the litter.

Аннотация: Warming of the permafrost accompanied by the release of ancient soil organic carbon is one of the most significant environmental threats within the global climate change scenario. While the main sites of permafrost carbon processing and its release to the atmosphere are thermokarst (thaw) lakes and ponds, the main carriers of carbon and related major and trace elements from the land to the Arctic ocean are Russian subarctic rivers. The source of carbon in these rivers is atmospheric C consumed by chemical weathering of rocks and amplified by plant uptake and litter decomposition. This multidisciplinary study describes results of more than a decade of observations and measurements of elements fluxes, stocks and mechanisms in the Russian boreal and subarctic zone, from Karelia region to the Kamchatka peninsula, along the gradient of permafrost-free terrain to continuous permafrost settings, developed on various lithology and vegetation types. We offer a comprehensive, geochemically-based view on the functioning of aquatic boreal systems which quantifies the role of the following factors on riverine element fluxes: (1) the specificity of lithological substrate; (2) the importance of organic and organo-mineral colloidal forms, notably during the snowmelt season; (3) the phenomenon of lakes seasonal overturn; (4) the role of permafrost within the small and large watersheds; and (5) the governing role of terrestrial vegetation in element mobilization from rock substrate to the river. Care of such a multiple approach, a first order prediction of the evolution of element stocks and fluxes under scenario of progressive warming in high latitudes becomes possible. It follows the increase of frozen peat thawing in western Siberia will increase the stocks of elements in surface waters by a factor of 3 to 10 whereas the increase of the thickness of active layer, the biomass and the primary productivity all over permafrost-affected zone will bring about a short-term increase of elements stocks in labile reservoir (plant litter) and riverine fluxes by a factor of 2. The change of the plant productivity and community composition under climate warming in central Siberia will be the most important factor of major and trace element fluxes increase (probably a factor of 2) from the soil to the river and, finally, to the Arctic Ocean. Аннотация: The peculiarities of organic carbon water soluble fraction content in the litters and soil profile in burned forests of different age under the cryolithozone conditions have been revealed. It has been shown that surface fires cause a decrease in the content of water-extractable organic carbon (WEOC) in the litters and upper 5 cm deep layer of soil. At the same time in microelevations these differences are more pronounced and the WEOC content in the upper organogenic horizons in burnt-out places is 2 times lower. In the deeper soil horizons there have been no differences detected in the WEOC content between intact plantations and postpyrogenic areas.

Аннотация: Experimental data on the effect of surface fires on the organic matter transformation in the gray-humus soils of pine forests were obtained in the southwestern part of the Baikal region. The application of methods of thermal analysis (such as differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry) made it possible to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the decomposition (oxidation) of the components of the soil organic matter upon their heating. It was found that the organic matter content in the soils subjected to fires of high intensity decreased by 1.9 times in comparison with the control. In the litter horizons of the undisturbed soils, thermolabile components (mostly, oligo- and polysaccharides) comprised 61% of the organic matter, and the portion of thermostable components (aromatic compounds) was 39%. A significant decrease in the content of thermolabile components and an increase in the content of thermostable components (up to 62%) were observed in the organic matter of the postpyrogenic forest litter as a result of the charcoal formation during the fire.

Аннотация: The biomass of large invertebrates was studied in the soils of forest ecosystems in the forest-tundra and southern taiga of Central Siberia. Its formation is shown to be controlled by the integrated effect of the soil and climatic conditions. The distribution of the zoomass according to the main taxonomic groups testifies to the higher functional significance of the large saprophagous invertebrates in the ecosystems of the southern taiga compared to those of the forest-tundra. The quantitative contribution of the invertebrates-destroyers to the organic matter decomposition was assessed on the basis of field experiments; it was shown to be determined by the quality of the material decomposed irrespective of the conditions and time of its exposition. Every year, soil saprophages decompose 0.5-2.0% of the total phytodetritus reserves in the forest-tundra and 3-14% in the southern taiga amounting to 12-54% of its losses upon decomposition. Аннотация: The postfire transformation of the functional activity of the microbial cenoses and the main soil properties under mixed larch forests were studied in the lower reaches of the Angara River. It was shown that the intensity of the postfire changes in the population density, biomass, and activity of the microorganisms in the dark podzolized brown forest soil depended on the degree of burning of the ground cover and the surface litter during the fire. The maximum effects of the fire on the microbial cenoses were observed in the litter and the upper 5-cm-thick layer of the dark-humus horizon in the areas of intense burning. The postfire restoration of the structural-functional activity of the microbial cenoses was determined by the degree of transformation of soil properties and by the postpyrogenic succession in the ground cover. The microbial complexes of the dark podzolized brown forest soils under mixed larch forests in the studied region restored their functional activity after the fires of different intensities quicker than the microbial cenoses of the sandy podzols in the pyrogenic lichen-green-moss pine forests of the same zone.

Forest litter -- ash stock -- western Siberia -- spatial statistics -- geostatistics -- Betula pubescens Ehrh

Аннотация: The ash stock in forest litter influences the fertility of forest soil and should be studied. Litter samples were taken at 70 locations within a 270x60 metre transect in 2004-2007 in the bog birch forest, western Siberia. A geostatistical model with external trend was applied to describe the spatial pattern of the ash mass (kg m(-2)) on the forest floor. Hydrological factors, used as explanatory variables in an external trend equation, account for the main portion of spatial variation (83% and 49% in the years of, respectively, low and high spring flooding). Covariance structure of the data, connected with patterns of vegetation and silt deposits, explains the smaller portion of spatial variation (12% and 38%). The unexplained variation is minor (5% and 13%). (c) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Selection and/or peer-review under responsibility of Spatial Statistics 2011
