A trace-gas climatology above Zotino, central Siberia
/ J. Lloyd, N. Tchebakova, O. Shibistova // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 749-767

Аннотация: Using light aircraft and at intervals of approximately 14 days, vertical profiles of temperature, humidity, CO2 concentration and C-13/C-12 and O-18/O-16 ratio, as well as concentrations of CH4, CO, H-2 and N2O, from about 80 to 3000 m above ground level have been determined for the atmosphere above a flux measurement tower located near the village of Zotino in central Siberia (60degrees45'N, 89degrees23'E). As well as being determined from flask measurements (typically at heights of 100, 500, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 m) continuous CO2 concentration profiles at 1 Hz have also been obtained using an infrared gas analyser. This measurement program is ongoing and has been in existence since July 1998. Data to November 2000 are presented and show a seasonal cycle for CO2 concentration of about 25 mumol mol(-1) within the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and about 15 mumol mol(-1) in the free troposphere. Marked seasonal cycles in the isotopic compositions Of CO2 are also observed, with that of oxygen-18 in CO2 being unusual: always being depleted in the ABL with respect to the free troposphere above. This is irrespective of whether the CO2 concentration is higher or lower in the free troposphere. We interpret this as indicating a net negative discrimination being associated with the net terrestrial carbon exchange, irrespective of whether photosynthesis or respiration dominates the net carbon flux in this region. During winter flights, large fluctuations in CO2 concentration with height are often observed both within and above the stable ABL. Usually (but not always) these variations in CO2 concentrations are associated with more or less stoichiometrically constant variations in CO and CH4 concentrations. We interpret this as reflecting the frequent transport of polluted air from Europe with very little vertical mixing having occurred, despite the large horizontal distances traversed. This notion is supported by back-trajectory analyses. Vertical profiles Of CO2 concentration with supplementary flask measurements allow more information on the structure and composition of an air mass to be obtained than is the case for flask measurements or for ground-based measurements only. In particular, our data question the notion that there is usually anything like "well mixed background air" in the mid-to-high northern latitudes during the winter months.

Particulate emissions from fires in central Siberian Scots pine forests
: материалы временных коллективов / Yu. N. Samsonov [и др.] // Canadian Journal of Forest Research. - 2005. - Vol. 35, : 9. - С. 2207-2217

Аннотация: Siberian boreal forest fires burn large areas annually, resulting in smoke that release large amounts of particulate emission into the atmospere. We sampled aerosol emissions from experimental fires of three Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forest sites of central Siberia. Emissions from ground-based aerosol samples were 0.1-0.7 t/ha. This value represented 1%- 7% of the total biomass (10-30 t/ha) consumed during the experimental fires. We were able classify the chemical composition of 77%-90% of the mass of particulate the emissions. Chemical analysis indicated that an average of 8%-17% of the particulate composition was of mineral emission.

Productivity of six tree species plantations for three decades in the Siberian afforestation experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / V. V. Kuzmichev, L. S. Pshenichnikova, V. A. Tretyakova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 269-280. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Measurements were made of height, diameter and number of trees in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment for monoculture plots with six tree species, established in the central part of the Krasnoyarsk region. Almost 150 felled trees were measured to evaluate aboveground biomass fractions determine biomass dynamics through stand development. Local uncertainties in needle mass dynamics were revealed for Scots and arolla pine stands. Carbon storage was evaluated for live trees and in biomass of dead trees and fall of branches and needles. Over the 35 years of stand development, these species accumulated 100 to 300 m3/ha of wood, with a likely carbon content about 25 to 75 Mg/ha. The trees also added a large amount of C to the soil in fallen leaves, branches, and dead roots. In this region, Norway spruce and arolla pine form the longest-lived forests, and may have higher productivities than the other species later in stand development.

Аннотация: The complex investignation of fir-pine forest in Kuznetskii Alatau Mountains has been shown that in this region damaged forest biocenoses are dominated. The specific character of fir trees damage has been noted. The chemical analysis showd the accumulation in needle of low index biocenosis sulfates and mercury and decrease of zinc maintenance. We believe that complex character of causes of the decline has a regional specific. The plant biotecnologies for mass production genetically improved seedling of Siberian pine and fir for reforestation programs are developed.

variograms -- typological series -- water regime -- litter

Аннотация: A typological series of native Betula pubescens Ehrh. dendrocenoses along the channel of a river crossing a bog was studied. The variability of the mineral element reserves is described by geostatistical methods as the sum of a trend, autocorrelation, and random components. The contribution of deterministic and random components has been assessed in the years with average precipitation and in the year of 2007 with high and long-term flooding. The empirical variograms and the parameters of the model variograms are presented. The class of the spatial correlation of the ash reserves is described. A primary cause of the ash content's variability is the specific water regime, which is determined by the following: (i) the abundance and duration of the spring floods responsible for the silt mass brought by the river and (ii) the draining effect of the intrabog river, the distance from which provided the formation in the forest of the ground cover with the specific species composition and ash content. The falloff of the arboreal layer in the bog birch forests formed the fundamental mineral background of the litter.

Аннотация: A change in the mass and composition of organic matter in the phytomass and soil of pine forests affected by mid-intensity and high-intensity fires is considered. It is shown that a mid-intensity fire did not catastrophically affect the pool of carbon in the middle-aged pine forests of the subtaiga forest-steppe and the taiga higher belt areas in the southwest of the Baikal region. Five years after a high-intensity fire, the carbon reserves in a mature taiga pine forest remain 20% lower than in an unaffected pine forest. Compared with the reference figures, the mass of C and soil cover in the stand phytomass decreased by 18 and 63%, respectively. In the easily mineralizable fraction of organic matter, the reserves of carbon decreased by half owing to burnout of waste wood (by 64%) and root detritus (by 50% compared with the reference tree stand figures).

Scots pine -- composition of terpenoids -- individual variability

Аннотация: The results of the study of the qualitative composition and relative content of highly volatile compounds from the needles in two natural pine populations located in the forest-steppe zone in the south of Central Siberia are presented. Altogether, 89 components were isolated. Analysis of intra- and interpopulation variability of 31 terpenoids (mono- and sesquiterpene fractions) was conducted. The spatial structure of the variance of features was analyzed. Significant interpopulation differences in the content of most compounds were registered. It was determined that, as growing conditions deteriorate, the mass fraction of lighter monoterpene compounds (especially alpha-pinene) is increased within populations, and qualitative diversity of the components of essential oils is decreased. The groups of terpenoids, the relative content of which is to a different degree associated with interpopulation differences and variety of the growing conditions of trees within populations, were isolated.

Аннотация: The Northern Eurasian land mass encompasses a diverse array of land cover types including tundra, boreal forest, wetlands, semi-arid steppe, and agricultural land use. Despite the well-established importance of Northern Eurasia in the global carbon and climate system, the distribution and properties of land cover in this region are not well characterized. To address this knowledge and data gap, a hierarchical mapping approach was developed that encompasses the study area for the Northern Eurasia Earth System Partnership Initiative (NEESPI). The Northern Eurasia Land Cover (NELC) database developed in this study follows the FAO-land Cover Classification System and provides nested groupings of land cover characteristics, with separate layers for land use, wetlands, and tundra. The database implementation is substantially different from other large-scale land cover datasets that provide maps based on a single set of discrete classes. By providing a database consisting of nested maps and complementary layers, the NELC database provides a flexible framework that allows users to tailor maps to suit their needs. The methods used to create the database combine empirically derived climate-vegetation relationships with results from supervised classifications based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The hierarchical approach provides an effective framework for integrating climate-vegetation relationships with remote sensing-based classifications, and also allows sources of error to be characterized and attributed to specific levels in the hierarchy. The cross-validated accuracy was 73% for the land cover map and 73% and 91% for the agriculture and wetland classifications, respectively. These results support the use of hierarchical classification and climate-vegetation relationships for mapping land cover at continental scales. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Forest litter -- ash stock -- western Siberia -- spatial statistics -- geostatistics -- Betula pubescens Ehrh

Аннотация: The ash stock in forest litter influences the fertility of forest soil and should be studied. Litter samples were taken at 70 locations within a 270x60 metre transect in 2004-2007 in the bog birch forest, western Siberia. A geostatistical model with external trend was applied to describe the spatial pattern of the ash mass (kg m(-2)) on the forest floor. Hydrological factors, used as explanatory variables in an external trend equation, account for the main portion of spatial variation (83% and 49% in the years of, respectively, low and high spring flooding). Covariance structure of the data, connected with patterns of vegetation and silt deposits, explains the smaller portion of spatial variation (12% and 38%). The unexplained variation is minor (5% and 13%). (c) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Selection and/or peer-review under responsibility of Spatial Statistics 2011

Аннотация: The scaling of respiratory metabolism with body mass is one of the most pervasive phenomena in biology. Using a single allometric equation to characterize empirical scaling relationships and to evaluate alternative hypotheses about mechanisms has been controversial. We developed a method to directly measure respiration of 271 whole plants, spanning nine orders of magnitude in body mass, from small seedlings to large trees, and from tropical to boreal ecosystems. Our measurements include the roots, which have often been ignored. Rather than a single power-law relationship, our data are fit by a biphasic, mixed-power function. The allometric exponent varies continuously from 1 in the smallest plants to 3/4 in larger saplings and trees. Therefore, our findings support the recent findings of Reich et al. [Reich PB, Tjoelker MG, Machado JL, Oleksyn J (2006) Universal scaling of respiratory metabolism, size, and nitrogen in plants. Nature 439: 457-461] and West, Brown, and Enquist [West GB, Brown JH, Enquist BJ (1997) A general model for the origin of allometric scaling laws in biology. Science 276: 122 - 126.]. The transition from linear to 3/4-power scaling may indicate fundamental physical and physiological constraints on the allocation of plant biomass between photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic organs over the course of ontogenetic plant growth.

Кл.слова (ненормированные):
Siberian moth -- larvae -- host plants -- withdrawn food

Аннотация: Experimental evaluation of the mass of food withdrawn by larvae of the Siberian moth during their development on larch, cedar pine, fir, spruce, and common pine was carried out. The obtained dependences between the masses of larvae and food withdrawn by them can be directly used to determine the withdrawn food rate of Siberian moth on each of the Siberian conifer species.

Аннотация: The estimates of the carbon pool in the organic matter of gray soils of the southern taiga, the intensity of destruction of its components, and participation of the latter in the formation of the mineralized carbon flux to the atmosphere are presented for different stages of succession of deciduous (birch) and coniferous (fir) forests. The carbon pool varies from 139.7 to 292.7 t/ha. It is distributed between phytodetritus, mobile and stabile humus (32, 19, and 49%, respectively). The intensity of the mineralization carbon flux to the atmosphere amounts to 3.93-4.13 t C per year. Phytodetritus plays the main role in the formation of this flux. In the soils under the forests studied, 4-6% of the carbon flux are formed owing to mineralization of the newly formed soil humus. In birch forests, 2-6% (0.1-0.2% of the humus pool in the 0-20-cm layer) is the contribution to the flux due to mineralization of soil humus. In fir forests, the mineralized humus is compensated by humus substances synthesized in the process of humification during phytodetritus decomposition.
