Estimates of regional surface carbon dioxide exchange and carbon and oxygen isotope discrimination during photosynthesis from concentration profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer
/ J.M. Styles et al, N. Tchebakova // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 768-783

Аннотация: The integrating properties of the atmospheric boundary layer allow the influence of surface exchange processes on the atmosphere to be quantified and estimates of large-scale fluxes of trace gases and plant isotopic discrimination to be made. Five flights were undertaken over two days in and above the convective boundary layer (CBL) in a vegetated region in central Siberia. Vertical profiles Of CO2 and H2O concentrations, temperature and pressure were obtained during each flight. Air flask samples were taken at various heights for carbon and oxygen isotopic analysis Of CO2. Two CBL budget methods were compared to estimate regional surface fluxes Of CO2 and plant isotopic discrimination against (CO2)-C-13 and (COO)-O-18-O-16. Flux estimates were compared to ground-based eddy covariance measurements. The fluxes obtained for CO2 using the first method agreed to within 10% of fluxes measured in the forest at the study site by eddy covariance. Those obtained from the second method agreed to within 35% when a correction was applied for air loss out of the integrating column and for subsidence. The values for C-13 discrimination were within the range expected from knowledge Of C-3 plant discriminations during photosynthesis, while the inferred O-18 discrimination varied considerably over the two-day period. This variation may in part be explained by the enrichment of chloroplast water during the day due to evaporation from an initial signature in the morning close to source water. Additional potential complications arising from the heterogeneous nature of the landscape are discussed.

Reconstructing past stand density in even-aged Larix gmelinii monocultures: comparison of three approaches
: материалы временных коллективов / A. Osawa, A. P. Abaimov, O. A. Zyryanova // Proceedings of the seventh Symposium on the joint Seberian Permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1998. - Sapporo : Hokkaido University. - С. 21-24. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Three methods were compared for reconstructing stand densisty in the past of a naturally growing Larix gmelinii forest in central Siberia. The first method assumed that the stand has been developing along the self-thinning line. The second approach used structutal characteristics of trees in the stand. The third method estimated stand density by aging every dead stem that was present at the time of the study. We suggest that the third approach is most accurate, and current knowledge of the self-thinning relatioship is unsufficient for this species.

Growth dynamics of conifer tree rings. Images of past and future environments

Аннотация: Each tree ring contains an image of the time when the ring formed, projected onto the ring's size, structure, and composition. Tree rings thus are natural archives of past environments, and contain records of past climate. While dendrochronologists have investigated the impact of climate on tree-ring growth by empirical-statistical methods. This volume presents a process-based model complementing previous approaches. Basic ideas concerning the biology of tree-ring growth and its control by environmental factors are treated, especially for conifers. The use of the model is illustrated by means of several examples from widely differing environments, and possible future directions for model development and application are discussed. The volume provides an improved mechanistic basis for the interpretation of tree rings as records of past climate. It advances process understanding of the large-scale environmental control of wood growth. As forests are the main carbon sink on land, the results are of great importance for all global change studies.

Integrated approach to monitoring of the Siberian moth population density
: absracts / V. M. Pet'ko [и др.] // Enviromis. International conference on enviromental observations, modelling and information systems, Tomsk, Russia, July 1-8, 2006: program and abstracts. - 2006. - С. 95

Аннотация: The Siberian moth (SM), is the most destructive defoliator of conifers in Northern Asia. It could have a serious impact on native forests. The present day monitoring methods of SM populations density, based on trees shaking for larve sampling, are labor-intensive, expensive and require an optimization. Although larve sampling is an extremely expensive procedure, only its' results may be a basis for presribed insecticide spraying of pest population.

Performance of various methods of fire weather danger rating in the South Lake Baikal forests
: abstract / T. M. Sofronova // Enviromis. International conference on environmental observations, modelling and information systems, Tomsk, Russia, July 1-8, 2006: program and abstracts. - 2006. - С. 97

Аннотация: We tested Russian indices: Nesterov index (PN, 1968), Leningrad Research Institute index PV-1, 1975), Krasnoyarsk Forest Institute index (PVG, 1990) as well as Canadian index (FWI,1987) - in the South Lake Baikal area on the territory of the Sludyanka Forest Office (351 thousand ha). The performance criterion was the correlation between the index value and the average daily number of active fires (according to index gradations) within spring and summer-autumn periods of a fire season. Weight of every point was teken into account. None of the methods tested showed the superior overall performance. A new method of local scales elaborated in V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk was used.

Аннотация: Premise of the study: Xylem structure determines the hydraulic and mechanical properties of a stem, and its plasticity is fundamental for maintaining tree performance under changing conditions. Unveiling the mechanism and the range of xylem adjustment is thus necessary to anticipate climate change impacts on vegetation. Methods: To understand the mechanistic process and the functional impact of xylem responses to warming in a cold-limited environment, we investigated the relationship between temperature and tracheid anatomy along a 312-yr tree-ring chronology of Larix sibirica trees from the Altay Mountains in Russia. Key results: Climate-growth analyses indicated that warming favors wider earlywood cell lumen, thicker laewood walls, denser maximum latewood, and wider rings. The temperature signal of the latewood was stronger (r > 0.7) and covered a longer and more stable period (from June to August) than that of earlywood and tree-ring width. Long-term analyses indicated a diverging trend between lumen and cell wall of early-and latewood. Conclusions: Xylem anatomy appears to respond to warming temperatures. A warmer early-growing season raises water conduction capacity by increasing the number and size of earlywood tracheids. The higher-performing earlywood tracheids promote more carbon fixation of the latewood cells by incrementing the rate of assimilation when summer conditions are favorable for growth. The diverging long-term variation of lumen and cell wall in earlywood vs. latewood suggests that xylem adjustments in latewood increase mechanical integrity and support increasing tree size under the ameliorated growing conditions.

Аннотация: Boreal forests constitute the world's largest terrestrial carbon pools. The main natural disturbance in these forests is wildfire, which modifies the carbon budget and atmosphere, directly and indirectly. Wildfire emissions in Russia contribute substantially to the global carbon cycle and have potentially important feedbacks to changing climate. Published estimates of carbon emissions from fires in Russian boreal forests vary greatly depending on the methods and data sets used. We examined various fire and vegetation products used to estimate wildfire emissions for Siberia. Large (up to fivefold) differences in annual and monthly area burned estimates for Siberia were found among four satellite-based fire data sets. Official Russian data were typically less than 10% of satellite estimates. Differences in the estimated proportion of annual burned area within each ecosystem were as much as 40% among five land-cover products. As a result, fuel consumption estimates would be expected to vary widely (3%-98%) depending on the specific vegetation mapping product used and as a function of weather conditions. Verification and validation of burned area and land-cover data sets along with the development of fuel maps and combustion models are essential for accurate Siberian wildfire emission estimates, which are central to balancing the carbon budget and assessing feedbacks to climate change.

Аннотация: A typological series of native Betula pubescens Ehrh. dendrocenoses along the channel of a river crossing a bog was studied. The variability of the mineral element reserves is described by geostatistical methods as the sum of a trend, autocorrelation, and random components. The contribution of deterministic and random components has been assessed in the years with average precipitation and in the year of 2007 with high and long-term flooding. The empirical variograms and the parameters of the model variograms are presented. The class of the spatial correlation of the ash reserves is described. A primary cause of the ash content's variability is the specific water regime, which is determined by the following: (i) the abundance and duration of the spring floods responsible for the silt mass brought by the river and (ii) the draining effect of the intrabog river, the distance from which provided the formation in the forest of the ground cover with the specific species composition and ash content. The falloff of the arboreal layer in the bog birch forests formed the fundamental mineral background of the litter.

Аннотация: We determine the net land to atmosphere flux of carbon in Russia, including Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan, using inventory-based, eddy covariance, and inversion methods. Our high boundary estimate is -342 TgC yr(-1) from the eddy covariance method, and this is close to the upper bounds of the inventory-based Land Ecosystem Assessment and inverse models estimates. A lower boundary estimate is provided at -1350 TgC yr(-1) from the inversion models. The average of the three methods is -613.5 TgC yr(-1). The methane emission is estimated separately at 41.4 Tg C yr(-1). These three methods agree well within their respective error bounds. There is thus good consistency between bottom-up and top-down methods. The forests of Russia primarily cause the net atmosphere to land flux (-692 TgC yr(-1) from the LEA. It remains however remarkable that the three methods provide such close estimates (-615, -662, -554 TgC yr(-1)) for net biome production (NBP), given the inherent uncertainties in all of the approaches. The lack of recent forest inventories, the few eddy covariance sites and associated uncertainty with upscaling and undersampling of concentrations for the inversions are among the prime causes of the uncertainty. The dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) suggest a much lower uptake at -91 TgC yr(-1), and we argue that this is caused by a high estimate of heterotrophic respiration compared to other methods.

tree-ring chronologies -- climate reconstruction -- Altai-Sayan region

Аннотация: Studies in Central Asia (Altai-Sayan region, northwest and central Mongolia) have shown that trees growing in arid conditions of mountain forest-steppes have a mixed and unstable climatic response. It is obvious that this nature of the climatic response of trees prevents the use of tree-ring chronologies for climate reconstruction. In this connection, it is necessary to separate the climatic signal of tree-ring chronologies, i.e., extract the signal for moisture. This paper proposes a method for separating the climatic signal of tree-ring chronologies of mountain forest-steppes, and reports estimates of its reliability by two independent methods. Analysis of the chronologies obtained after separation of the signal, based on meteorological and hydrological data, has shown that these chronologies can be used for climate reconstructions.

Аннотация: The symbiotic fixation of atmospheric nitrogen by leguminous plants in the alpine community of a lichen heath at the Teberda State Biosphere Reserve is well adapted to low soil temperature characteristic for the altitude of 2800 m a.s.l. For the determination of the N fixation by isotopic methods (the method of the natural (15)N abundance and the method of isotopic (15)N dilution), Trifolium polyphyllum was taken as the control plant. This plant was used as it does not form symbiosis with the nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the highlands of the Northern Caucasus Region. The contribution of the N fixation to the N nutrition of different leguminous plant species as determined by the natural (15)N abundance method amounted to 28-73% at delta(15)N(0) = 0aEuro degrees and 46-117% at delta(15)N(0) = -1aEuro degrees; for the determination of the N fixation by the method of the isotopic label's dilution, it was 34-97%. The best correlation of the results obtained by these two isotopic methods was observed for the natural fractionation of the N isotopes in the course of the N fixation in the range of -0.5 to -0.7aEuro degrees. The determination of the nitrogenase activity of the roots by the acetylene method confirmed the absence of N fixation in T. polyphyllum and its different contribution to the N nutrition of different species of leguminous plants.

Аннотация: Experimental data on the effect of surface fires on the organic matter transformation in the gray-humus soils of pine forests were obtained in the southwestern part of the Baikal region. The application of methods of thermal analysis (such as differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry) made it possible to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the decomposition (oxidation) of the components of the soil organic matter upon their heating. It was found that the organic matter content in the soils subjected to fires of high intensity decreased by 1.9 times in comparison with the control. In the litter horizons of the undisturbed soils, thermolabile components (mostly, oligo- and polysaccharides) comprised 61% of the organic matter, and the portion of thermostable components (aromatic compounds) was 39%. A significant decrease in the content of thermolabile components and an increase in the content of thermostable components (up to 62%) were observed in the organic matter of the postpyrogenic forest litter as a result of the charcoal formation during the fire.
