    Integrated approach to monitoring of the Siberian moth population density

Аннотация: The Siberian moth (SM), is the most destructive defoliator of conifers in Northern Asia. It could have a serious impact on native forests. The present day monitoring methods of SM populations density, based on trees shaking for larve sampling, are labor-intensive, expensive and require an optimization. Although larve sampling is an extremely expensive procedure, only its' results may be a basis for presribed insecticide spraying of pest population.

    Siberian moth - a relentless modifier of taiga forest ecosystems in Northern Asia

Аннотация: The Siberian moth is the main ecological factor that initiates succession in the dark coniferous forest in taiga subzone of Southern Siberia. Subsequent wildfires only further modify the process of reforestation in "shelkopryadniks". A review of investignations of the Siberian moth outbreak of 1989-1997 demonstrates different ecological and economic consequences of the global ecological phenomenon.

Аннотация: This is a short review of our recent studies on trophic adaptation of a boreal forest pest, the Siberian moth in its native range, North Asia and in Central Europe where the species is believed to invade in a near future. In Europe, the hierarchy in suitability of host plant genera (increasing from two-needle pines, spruce, fir, to larch) remains similar to that in the pest range. Besides European plants, some North American conifers from genera which do not exist in the pest habitat can be served as potential hosts for the insect.

Аннотация: Выявлен основной состав полового аттрактанта для самцов соснового шелкопряда Dendrolimus pini L. (Lepidoptera, lasiocampidae) в азиатской части ареала вида. Это смесь Z5, E7-додекадиеналя и Z5, Е7 - додекадиенола в соответствии 1000:500, соответственно. Смесь оказалась аттрактивной для самцов алтайской и приенисейской популяции шелкопряда. Z5, E7-додекадиенилацетат и Z5, Е7 - додекадиенилпропионат являются, по-видимому, ингибиторами полового поведения самцов шелкопряда. Добавление их к основной смеси уже в малых дозах резко снижает привлекательность ловушек.

Аннотация: The results of experimental studies on the contribution of zoogenic debris to transformation of soil properties in the southern taiga subzone of Central Siberia are analyzed. They show that water-soluble carbon outflow from the forest litter increases by 21-26% upon a Siberian moth invasion, with this value decreasing to 14% one year later. The burning of forest in an area completely defoliated by the pest leads to changes in the stock, fractional composition, actual acidity, and ash element contents of the litter. The litter-dwelling invertebrate assemblage is almost completely destroyed by fire and begins to recover only after two years.

Аннотация: A comparison of two Siberian moth populations from the Altai Republic (feeding on Siberian fir) and the Tyva Republic (feeding on Siberian larch) has revealed no differences between them with respect to ecophysiological parameters of larval growth and feeding on needles of the same conifer species under laboratory conditions. The index of appropriateness of food plants for the larvae from both populations decreases in the series larch > fir > spruce > pine. The age-related dynamics of parameters characterizing the feeding and growth of larvae are independent of the population to which the insects belong.

Аннотация: The results of studying the dynamics of forest litter properties in the loci of a Siberian moth (Dendrolimus sibiricus) mass outbreak are considered. As a fir forest defoliated by this pest burns, the reserves and fractional composition of the forest litter, its actual acidity, and its chemical composition drastically change. Upon the burning out of such forests, the litter complex of invertebrates is fully destroyed and begins restoring only two years after the fire.

Аннотация: Data on the postfire dynamics of soil properties in the foci of Siberian moth population outbreaks are considered. It has been shown that controlled fires set in pest-defoliated forests result in the loss of approximately 75% of carbon and 50% of nitrogen from the forest litter through their emission into the atmosphere and in the enrichment of the upper soil horizons with potassium and phosphorus (this concerns both total and movable forms). Microbiological processes in the organogenic horizon undergo significant transformation, the density of microarthropods decreases, and the abundance of mites becomes hundreds of times lower.

Аннотация: The experimental data on the transformation of properties of soddy-deeply podzolic soils and raw humus burozems under fir forests defoliated by the Siberian moth Dendrolimus sibiricus are analyzed. In the first two months after the addition of Siberian moth excrements to the forest litter, the population of all ecological-trophic groups of microorganisms was shown to increase by 13 times, that of ammonifying phototrophs and microorganisms, taking part in humus mineralization, by 42 and 9 times, respectively. The leaching of water-soluble carbon from litters in forests defoliated by the Siberian moth was by 21-26% higher than that from litters of control ones. A year later, it was reduced to 14%. The content of exchangeable hydrogen and total acidity decreased, and the degree of base saturation increased. Within 5-6 years after the Siberian moth invasion, the transformation of physicochemical, chemical, and microbiological properties of soils was specified by succession development of the plant cover.

Аннотация: Food energy expenditures by gypsy moth at different developmental stages under conditions of feeding on larch needles are described. The distribution of total food energy (%) for metabolism, the formation of exuvia (throughout ontogeny), and the formation of an adult insect is assessed. The proportion of food energy lost with excrements over the entire period of feeding is the same (58%) in females and males. The assimilated part of food energy is distributed differently: energy expenditures for the formation of exuvia and adult insects are greater in females than in males. The proportion of food energy expended for metabolism throughout the insect life span is approximately 30% in both females and males.

Аннотация: Experimental data are analyzed that concern the effect of zoogenic debris on the properties of soddy deep podzolic soils and raw-humus brown soils characteristic of southern taiga forests in the Yenisei region of Siberia. It is shown that the influence of excrements of Siberian moth larvae on the soil microflora lasts for two or, at most, three growing seasons. Zoogenic plant debris failing on the ground surface during tree stand defoliation is a short-acting but powerful stimulant of biological activity in the litter; hence, it has a considerable effect on soil properties. This effect is enhanced by changes in ecological conditions that occur upon defoliation. The influence of the cenotic factor on biogenic soil properties is manifested more strongly in the organogenic horizons. The communities of microorganisms involved in the nitrogen and carbon cycles are dominated by prototrophic forms in the normal fir forest and by pedotrophic forms in the forest defoliated by pests.

Аннотация: In the southern-taiga low grass-green moss fir forest completely defoliated by the Siberian moth, the rate of soil respiration in the third year after the pest population outbreak was 1.5 times higher than in an undisturbed tree stand. This was explained by a significant increase in the abundance and activity of soil microorganisms in the pest-defoliated forest, which occurred due to the qualitative changes in the litter composition and the increased temperature and moisture in the upper soil layers. The rate of carbon emission from the soil in the defoliated forest was 41.7 kg/ha per day, compared to 28.3 kg/ha per day in the undisturbed fir forest.

Аннотация: Efficient syntheses of (ZE)-5,7-dodecadienol, a pheromone component of the Siberian moth, Dendrolimus superans sibiricus, and (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienol, a pheromone component of various Lepidoptera pheromones, were accomplished by cis reduction of the corresponding enynols with activated zinc. The most energetic reagent was zinc galvanized with copper and silver (Zn/Cu/Ag) that achieved rapid and high-yield reduction in methanol-water. The stereoselectivity of semihydrogenation was greater than or equal to98%. A process whereby zinc dust was continuously activated throughout the reduction with an acid was also satisfactory (95-98% cis). Field evaluation of the 1:1 mixture of (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienol and (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienal with the Siberian moth in Russia showed that the rubber septa pretreated with compound and stored at -80 degreesC were as effective as freshly treated septa. Moth responses to septa aged in open air indicated that lure effectiveness declined significantly after 2 weeks of aging. Thus, if rubber septa are used as pheromone dispensers in Siberian moth traps monitoring, they should be replaced biweekly with fresh septa for optimal trap effectiveness.

Аннотация: In field studies in the Russian Far East, five types of illuminating devices were evaluated for attracting adult gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar (L.), pink gypsy moth, L. mathura Moore, and nun moth, L. monacha (L.). Our objective was to determine if light from commercial lamps suited to out-of-doors floodlighting could be modified to reduce their attractiveness to moths without a reduction of illumination. During 17 nights of tests, fluorescent blacklight lamps captured significantly more adults than either phosphor mercury or high-pressure sodium lamps, Captures were slightly higher for phosphor mercury than high-pressure sodium lamps but both were unattractive to all three lymantriids after the addition of filters that blocked spectral emissions <480 nm. Daily temporal periodicity, based on adult captures at lights, resulted in distinct activity patterns for the three lymantriids. Peak activity for L. dispar was between 2300 and 0100 hours; for L. mathura, 0100-0300 hours; and 0300-0500 hours for L. monacha. Temporal activity patterns suggest that L. dispar and L. monacha possess nonoverlapping diel rhythms, whereas L. mathura overlaps broadly with both L. dispar and L. monacha.

Аннотация: 1 The native range of the Siberian moth extends from the Pacific Ocean (Russian Far East, Japan and Northern Korea) across Siberia, Northern China and Mongolia to the Ural Mountains. At the beginning of the 21st Century, this species was documented west of the Ural Mountains in the Republic of Mari El, indicating range extension toward the west. 2 The Siberian moth has recently been suggested for regulation as a quarantine pest for European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization member countries. However, no specific report on European host plants for this pest has been published so far. 3 In the present study, larval host plant choice and performance was tested for the first time on coniferous tree species that are widely distributed and of commercial value in Europe. 4 Based on dual-choice tests on neonates and mortality, developmental duration and relative growth rates of the first- to sixth-instar larvae, we found European larch Larix decidua to be the most suitable host for the moth larvae, whereas European black pine Pinus nigra and Scots pine Pinus sylvestris were the poorest hosts. The remaining conifer species tested, European silver fir Abies alba, Nordmann fir Abies nordmanniana, and Norway spruce Picea abies, were intermediate host plants. Douglas-fir Pseudotsuga menziesii, originating from North America, was chosen by the larvae to the same extend as European larch, and was also highly suitable for larval development. 5 If the moth is introduced to European countries, it will become damaging in stands of European larch and Douglas-fir, mixed stands of fir and spruce; however, it will be less damaging in forests dominated by two-needle pines. 6 We predict that Dendrolimus superans sibiricus will be able to survive and develop on the main European coniferous tree species, including non-native coniferous tree species, resulting in severe damage to large areas of forests.

Аннотация: The state of microbial cenoses in the soils of forest ecosystems damaged by fires of different strengths and gypsy moth outbreaks (Central Siberia) was assessed by the intensity of the basal respiration, the content of carbon of the microbial biomass, and the microbial metabolic quotient. The degree of the disturbance of the microbial cenoses in the soils under pine forests after fires was higher than that in the soils under the forests defoliated by gypsy moths. The greatest changes of the microbial complexes were recorded after the fires of high and medium intensity. In the litters, the content of the microbial biomass, the intensity of basal respiration, and the microbial metabolic quotient value were restored on the fifth year after the fires, whereas in the upper (0-10 cm) soil layer, these parameters still differed from those in the control variant, especially after the highly intense fires. After the weak fires, the ecophysiological state of the microbial complexes was restored within two-three years.

Аннотация: The optimal density of larvae in Siberian moth (Dendrolimus superans sibiricus) kept in chambers varied in ontogenesis: the larvae living in grups predominated in the I-st-IVth instars, whereas those living alone, in the VIth instar. The critical moment equalizing feeding and growth parameters in single larvae and those grown in groups was observed in the V-th instar. The larval aggregation favored the survival rate in the I-st-IIIrd instars and the developmental intensity in the IIIth-IVth instars due to the higher efficiency of using food (ingested and digested) for growth. The relative growth rate and digestibility of food did not depend on the density of larval populations. The effects of density on feeding and growth parameters, as well as on the survival rate, were displayed even when three larvae were kept in one chamber. The increase of the number of larvae up to 20 did not change these effects.

Аннотация: The importance of summer diapause in Siberian moth larvae in the intrapopulation synchronization of hatching imago is estimated. The larval stage becomes longer due to reducing food consumption and efficiency of its utilization by larvae, despite favorable conditions of their development. The summer diapause in larvae of the IVth instar increases the developmental period up to 3 weeks and lowers significantly a relative rate of food consumption as compared to the control specimens. The diapausing larvae digested food by 20% less than the control ones. The efficiency of using the food for the growth of insects was 2 times lower. As a result, the relative growth rate in the diapausing larvae has reduced by 8 times (0.009 vs. 0.073 mg/mg per day).
