    Three years of trace gas observations over the EuroSiberian domain derived from aircraft sampling - a concerted action

Аннотация: A three-year trace gas climatology of CO2 and its stable isotopic ratios, as well as CH4, N2O and SF6, derived from regular vertical aircraft sampling over the Eurasian continent is presented. The four sampling sites range from about 1degreesE to 89degreesE in the latitude belt from 48N to 62degreesN. The most prominent features of the CO2 observations are an increase of the seasonal cycle amplitudes of CO2 and delta(13)C-CO2 in the free troposphere (at 3000 m a.s.l.) by more than 60% from Western Europe to Western and Central Siberia. delta(18)O-CO2 shows an even larger increase of the seasonal cycle amplitude by a factor of two from Western Europe towards the Ural mountains, which decreases again towards the most eastern site, Zotino. These data reflect a strong influence of carbon exchange fluxes with the continental biosphere. In particular, during autumn and winter delta(18)O-CO2 shows a decrease by more than 0.5parts per thousand from Orleans (Western Europe) to Syktyvkar (Ural mountains) and Zotino (West Siberia), mainly caused by soil respiration fluxes depleted in delta(18)O with respect to atmospheric CO2. CH4 mixing ratios in the free troposphere at 3000 m over Western Siberia are higher by about 20-30 ppb if compared to Western Europe. Wetland emissions seem to be particularly visible in July-September, with largest signals at Zotino in 1998. Annual mean CH4 mixing ratios decrease slightly from 1998 to 1999 at all Russian sites. In contrast to CO2 and CH4, which show significant vertical gradients between 2000 and 3000 m a.s.l., N2O mixing ratios are vertically very homogeneous and show no significant logitudinal gradient between the Ural mountains and Western Siberia, indicating insignificant emissions of this trace gas from boreal forest ecosystems in Western Siberia. The growth rate of N2O (1.2-1.3 ppb yr(-1)) and the seasonal amplitude (0:5-1.1 ppb) are similar at both aircraft sites, Syktyvkar and Zotino. For SF6 an annual increase of 5% is observed, together with a small seasonal cycle which is in phase with the N2O cycle, indicating that the seasonality of both trace gases are most probably caused by atmospheric transport processes with a possible contribution from stratosphere-troposphere exchange.

The runoff data were analysed by multiple regression analysis. Thus a change of runoff formation can be used as an environmental indicator for sustainable land use. The river runoff integrates changes of land surface/atmosphere exchange processes in the entire catchment. These processes can be drastically altered by human land use change.

Although larve sampling is an extremely expensive procedure, only its' results may be a basis for presribed insecticide spraying of pest population.

    Performance of various methods of fire weather danger rating in the South Lake Baikal forests

Аннотация: We tested Russian indices: Nesterov index (PN, 1968), Leningrad Research Institute index PV-1, 1975), Krasnoyarsk Forest Institute index (PVG, 1990) as well as Canadian index (FWI,1987) - in the South Lake Baikal area on the territory of the Sludyanka Forest Office (351 thousand ha). The performance criterion was the correlation between the index value and the average daily number of active fires (according to index gradations) within spring and summer-autumn periods of a fire season. Weight of every point was teken into account. None of the methods tested showed the superior overall performance. A new method of local scales elaborated in V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest, Krasnoyarsk was used.

Аннотация: Analyses demonstrate the far-reaching effects of a changing climate on vegetation cover. Hot spots of potential Siberian vegetation change are predicted for 1990. Observations of vegetation change in Siberia have already been documented in the literature. Vegetation habitats should be significantly perturbed by 2020, and markedly perturbed by 2080. Because of a dryer climate, forest-steppe and steppe-ecosystems, rather than forests, are predicted to dominate central Siberian landscapes. Despite the predicted increase in warming, permafrost is not predicted to thaw deep enough to support dark taiga over the Siberian plain, where the larch taiga will cntinue to be the dominant zonobiome. On the contrary, in the southern mountains in the absence of permafrost, dark taiga is predicted to remain the dominant orobiome.

Аннотация: A major focus of the study described here is an attempt to reveal the nature of local and any widespread tree-growth responses to the recent warming seen in the industrial observations. Namely, this chapter didcusses spatial variation in the trends of radial tree-ring growth in Siberia and Far EAST DURING DIFFERENT PERIODS OF THE 18TH CENTURIES. That distribution of trends is compared with spatial NDVI trends and temperature changes in the northern hemisphere over the past 20 years.

Аннотация: Siberia is currenly poorly represented in the system of global atmospheric observations. The lack of surface-based observations concerns the properties of atmospheric aerosol particles especially with respect to potential climate change. Here we report the first statistical analysis of the four years data observations at the ZOTTO observatory in Central Siberia aimed to assess the representative integral particle, seasonal variations of the aerosol, and possible sources of aerosol over the large Siberian forest area.

Аннотация: Arctic environments, where surface temperatures increase and sea ice cover and permafrost depth decrease, are very sensitive to even slight climatic variations. Placing recent environmental change of the high-northern latitudes in a long-term context is, however, complicated by too short meteorological observations and too few proxy records. Driftwood may represent a unique cross-disciplinary archive at the interface of marine and terrestrial processes. Here, we introduce 1445 driftwood remains from coastal East Greenland and Svalbard. Macroscopy and microscopy were applied for wood anatomical classification; a multi-species subset was used for detecting fungi; and information on boreal vegetation patterns, circumpolar river systems, and ocean current dynamics was reviewed and evaluated. Four conifer (Pinus, Larix, Picea, and Abies) and three deciduous (Populus, Salix, and Betula) genera were differentiated. Species-specific identification also separated Pinus sylvestris and Pinus sibirica, which account for similar to 40% of all driftwood and predominantly originate from western and central Siberia. Larch and spruce from Siberia or North America represents similar to 26% and similar to 18% of all materials, respectively. Fungal colonization caused different levels of driftwood staining and/or decay. Our results demonstrate the importance of combining wood anatomical knowledge with insight on boreal forest composition for successfully tracing the origin of Arctic driftwood. To ultimately reconstruct spatiotemporal variations in ocean currents, and to better quantify postglacial uplift rates, we recommend consideration of dendrochronologically dated material from many more circumpolar sites. Аннотация: The Trans-Baikal (or Zabailkal'e) region includes the forest-steppe ecotones south and east of Lake Baikal in Russia and has experienced drought for several years. The decline and mortality of birch (Betula pendula) stands within the forest-steppe ecotone Trans-Baikal region was studied based on a temporal series of satellite data, ground measurements, and tree ring analysis. During the first decade of the 21st century birch stands decline and mortality were observed on about 5% of the total area of stands within our 1250 km(2) study area. Birch forest decline and mortality occurs mainly at the margins of stands, within the forest-steppe ecotone on slopes with direct insolation. During the first decade of the 21st century summer (June-August) precipitation was about 25% below normal. Soil water content measurements were lowest within dead stands and highest within healthy stands and intermediate within damaged stands. Drought impact on stands was amplified by an increase in summer air temperatures (+0.9 degrees C) in comparison with the previous decade. Tree ring data of "surviving" and "dead" tree groups showed a positive correlation with summer/annual precipitation and negative correlation with summer air temperatures. Temperature and precipitation extreme anomalies tend to occur in the region with a period of about 27 years. The observed anomaly was the most severe since the beginning of meteorological observations in the year 1900. Data for the other sites showed a positive climate impact on the growth and expansion of Siberian forests. That is, the same species (B. pendula) showed considerable increase (1.4 times both in height and stem volume) during 20th-21st centuries as temperature increased but precipitation remained at adequate levels. Аннотация: Warming of the permafrost accompanied by the release of ancient soil organic carbon is one of the most significant environmental threats within the global climate change scenario. While the main sites of permafrost carbon processing and its release to the atmosphere are thermokarst (thaw) lakes and ponds, the main carriers of carbon and related major and trace elements from the land to the Arctic ocean are Russian subarctic rivers. The source of carbon in these rivers is atmospheric C consumed by chemical weathering of rocks and amplified by plant uptake and litter decomposition. This multidisciplinary study describes results of more than a decade of observations and measurements of elements fluxes, stocks and mechanisms in the Russian boreal and subarctic zone, from Karelia region to the Kamchatka peninsula, along the gradient of permafrost-free terrain to continuous permafrost settings, developed on various lithology and vegetation types. We offer a comprehensive, geochemically-based view on the functioning of aquatic boreal systems which quantifies the role of the following factors on riverine element fluxes: (1) the specificity of lithological substrate; (2) the importance of organic and organo-mineral colloidal forms, notably during the snowmelt season; (3) the phenomenon of lakes seasonal overturn; (4) the role of permafrost within the small and large watersheds; and (5) the governing role of terrestrial vegetation in element mobilization from rock substrate to the river. Care of such a multiple approach, a first order prediction of the evolution of element stocks and fluxes under scenario of progressive warming in high latitudes becomes possible. It follows the increase of frozen peat thawing in western Siberia will increase the stocks of elements in surface waters by a factor of 3 to 10 whereas the increase of the thickness of active layer, the biomass and the primary productivity all over permafrost-affected zone will bring about a short-term increase of elements stocks in labile reservoir (plant litter) and riverine fluxes by a factor of 2. The change of the plant productivity and community composition under climate warming in central Siberia will be the most important factor of major and trace element fluxes increase (probably a factor of 2) from the soil to the river and, finally, to the Arctic Ocean. Аннотация: In this article we review the use of tree saps in northern and eastern Europe. Published accounts by travellers, ethnologists and ethnobotanists were searched for historical and contemporary details. Field observations made by the authors have also been used. The presented data shows that the use of tree sap has occurred in most north and eastern European countries. It can be assumed that tree saps were most used where there were extensive stands of birch or maple trees, as these two genera generally produce the largest amount of sap. The taxa most commonly used have been Betula pendula, B. pubescens, and Acer platanoides, but scattered data on the use of several other taxa are presented. Tree sap was used as a fresh drink, but also as an ingredient in food and beverages. It was also fermented to make light alcoholic products like ale and wine. Other folk uses of tree saps vary from supplementary nutrition in the form of sugar, minerals and vitamins, to cosmetic applications for skin and hair and folk medicinal use. Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the only countries where the gathering and use of sap (mainly birch sap) has remained an important activity until recently, due to the existence of large birch forests, low population density and the incorporation of sap into the former Soviet economic system. It is evident that gathering sap from birch and other trees was more widespread in earlier times. There are records indicating extensive use of tree saps from Scandinavia, Poland, Slovakia and Romania, but it is primarily of a historical character. The extraction of tree sap in these countries is nowadays viewed as a curiosity carried out only by a few individuals. However, tree saps have been regaining popularity in urban settings through niche trading.

Аннотация: Methodological bases of optimization modeling approach are considered in regard to describing critical phenomena in forest ecosystems. Models of insects' outbreaks, forest successions, forest fires as second order phase transitions are proposed. It is shown that there is fair correlation between model calculations and observations data.
