Climatic changes, successions of peatlands and zonal vegetation, and peat accumulation dynamics in the Holocene (the West-Siberia peat profile "Vodorosdel")
/ F.Z. Glebov // Climatic Change. - 2002. - Vol. 55, № 1-2. - С. 175-181

Аннотация: The developmental history of peatland and dry land vegetation within the Ob-Vasugan watershed of Western Siberia was characterized according to features of the plant communities and climatic changes which were revealed by stratigraphic, spore-pollen and C-14 (carbon) data obtained from a vertical peat profile 'Vodorasdel'. Changes in the paleoecological environment over the last 10000 years were divided into five periods. The climate was characterized in the Holocene according to these periods. At the watershed studied, peatland-forming processes started about 9510 years ago resulting in 550 cm of peat accumulation. The rate of peat accumulation within the watershed decreased over time from 1.9-0.3 mm year(-1).

Plant species composition dynamics on the initial stages of postfire progressive successions in Siberian cryolithic zone
: материалы временных коллективов / O. A. Zyryanova, T. N. Bugayenko, N. N. Bugayenko, Y. Matsuura // Proceedings of the seventh symposium on the joint Siberian permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1998 : Hokkaido University, 1999. - С. 59-66. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: In 3-4 years after the fire the number of the vascular plants is 1:2-1.3 times more as compared to that of radial larch association. Both the appearance of the new plant species and their families as well as the restitution on beforefire plants are responsible for the high level of species diversity on the initial stages of progressive successions. Temporal and spatial structure of the radical larch community is destroyed in two years after the fire.

Seasonal and annual variations in the photosynthetic productivity and carbon balance of a central Siberian pine forest
/ J. Lloyd, O. Shibistova et al // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 590-610

Аннотация: We present a first analysis of data (June 1998 to December 2000) from the long-term eddy covariance site established in a Pinus sylvestris stand near Zotino in central Siberia as part of the EUROSIBERIAN CARBONFLUX project. As well as examining seasonal patterns in netecosystem exchange (N-E), daily, seasonal and annual estimates of the canopy photosynthesis (or gross primary productivity, G(P)) were obtained using N-E and ecosystem respiration measurements. Although the forest was a small (but significant) source of CO2 throughout the snow season (typically mid-October to early May) there was a rapid commencement of photosynthetic capacity shortly following the commencement of above-zero air temperatures in spring: in 1999 the forest went from a quiescent state to significant photosynthetic activity in only a few days. Nevertheless, canopy photosynthetic capacity was observed to continue to increase slowly throughout the summer months for both 1999 and 2000, reaching a maximum capacity in early August. During September there was a marked decline in canopy photosynthesis which was only partially attributable to less favourable environmental conditions. This suggests a reduction in canopy photosynthetic capacity in autumn, perhaps associated with the cold hardening process. For individual time periods the canopy. photosynthetic rate was mostly dependent upon incoming photon irradiance. However, reductions in both canopy conductance and overall photosynthetic rate in response to high canopy-to-air vapour differences were clearly evident on hot dry days. The relationship between canopy conductance and photosynthesis was examined using Cowan's notion of optimality in which stomata serve to maximise the marginal evaporative cost of plant carbon gain. The associated Lagrangian multiplier (lambda) was surprisingly constant throughout the growing season. Somewhat remarkably, however, its value was markedly different between years, being 416 mol mol(-1) in 1999 but 815 mol mol(-1) in 2000. Overall the forest was a substantial sink for CO2 in both 1999 and 2000: around 13 Mol C m(-2) a(-1). Data from this experiment, when combined with estimates of net primary productivity from biomass sampling suggest that about 20% of this sink was associated with increasing plant biomass and about 80% with an increase in the litter and soil organic carbon pools. This high implied rate of carbon accumulation in the litter soil organic matter pool seems unsustainable in the long term and is hard to explain on the basis of current knowledge.

Soil and canopy CO2, 13CO2, H2O and sensible heat flux partitions in a forest canopy inferred from concentration measurements
/ J.M. Styles et al, O. Shibistova // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 655-676

Аннотация: A canopy scale model is presented that utilises Lagrangian dispersal theory to describe the relationship between source distribution and concentration within the canopy. The present study differs from previous studies in three ways: (1) source/sink distributions are solved simultaneously for CO2, (CO2)-C-13, H2O and sensible heat to find a solution consistent with leaf-level constraints imposed by photosynthetic capacity, stomatal and boundary layer conductance, available energy and carbon isotopic discrimination during diffusion and carboxylation; (2) the model is used to solve for parameters controlling the nonlinear source interactions rather than the sources themselves; and (3) this study used plant physiological principles to allow the incorporation of within- and above-canopy measurements of the C-13/C-12 ratios Of CO2 as an additional constraint. Source strengths Of CO2, H2O, sensible heat and (CO2)-C-13 within a Siberian mixed-coniferous forest were constrained by biochemical and energy-balance principles applied to sun and shaded leaves throughout the canopy. Parameters relating to maximum photosynthetic capacity, stomatal conductance, radiation penetration and turbulence structure were determined by the optimisation procedure to match modelled and measured concentration profiles, effectively inverting the concentration data. Ground fluxes Of CO2, H2O and sensible heat were also determined by the inversion. Total ecosystem fluxes predicted from the inversion were compared to hourly averaged above-canopy eddy covariance measurements over a ten-day period, with good agreement. Model results showed that stomatal conductance and maximum photosynthetic capacity were depressed due to the low temperatures experienced during snow melt; radiation penetrated further than simple theoretical predictions because of leaf clumping and penumbra, and stability effects were important in the morning and evening. The inversion was limited by little vertical structure in the concentration profiles, particularly of water vapour, and by co-dependence of canopy parameters.

Estimates of regional surface carbon dioxide exchange and carbon and oxygen isotope discrimination during photosynthesis from concentration profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer
/ J.M. Styles et al, N. Tchebakova // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 768-783

Аннотация: The integrating properties of the atmospheric boundary layer allow the influence of surface exchange processes on the atmosphere to be quantified and estimates of large-scale fluxes of trace gases and plant isotopic discrimination to be made. Five flights were undertaken over two days in and above the convective boundary layer (CBL) in a vegetated region in central Siberia. Vertical profiles Of CO2 and H2O concentrations, temperature and pressure were obtained during each flight. Air flask samples were taken at various heights for carbon and oxygen isotopic analysis Of CO2. Two CBL budget methods were compared to estimate regional surface fluxes Of CO2 and plant isotopic discrimination against (CO2)-C-13 and (COO)-O-18-O-16. Flux estimates were compared to ground-based eddy covariance measurements. The fluxes obtained for CO2 using the first method agreed to within 10% of fluxes measured in the forest at the study site by eddy covariance. Those obtained from the second method agreed to within 35% when a correction was applied for air loss out of the integrating column and for subsidence. The values for C-13 discrimination were within the range expected from knowledge Of C-3 plant discriminations during photosynthesis, while the inferred O-18 discrimination varied considerably over the two-day period. This variation may in part be explained by the enrichment of chloroplast water during the day due to evaporation from an initial signature in the morning close to source water. Additional potential complications arising from the heterogeneous nature of the landscape are discussed.

Аннотация: The results of this study thus provides evidence that the BC stocks are strongly related to the OC stocks in general and to the environmental variables that control the OC stocks. A similar result was obtained by Glaser and Amelung for BC in North American native grassland soils. They concluded that the BC storage in soils is controlled by higher BC productiion at sites with high plant biomass and by shorter BC residence time in soils showing favourable conditions for OC decomposition. The data also show that if permafrost degradation is taking place by some kind of disturbance, in particular the bogs will loose BC to a large extent. It is proportionally even more pronounced than for OC in general. Hence, BC in permafrost soils is highly susceptible to permafrost thawing and cannot be considered as a refractory carbon species in such ecosystem. Also it is discussed another questions.

Biochemistry of carbon and nitrogen in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / E. F. Vedrova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 281-292. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We evaluated parameters (stock and flux) carbon, nitrogen and ash element cycling in the plant-soil system. The study was performed in arolla pine, Scots pine, Siberian larch, Norway spruce, aspen and birch plantations established on Kemchug upland, Chulym-Yenisei denudational plain, in 1968-1972. Young ecosystems (age class 2) that have developed under relatively similar environmental conditions have thus accumulated different amounts of organic and mineral matter in biomass and detritus, mainly due to differences in major woody species characteristics. All ecosystems are a net atmosperic carbon sink, with a pooling rate of 1.81-4.43 t C ha -1 yr -1. The sink (NEP) is made up by C accumulation in stand biomass production, vegetation detritus, and soil humus and accounts for 46-76% of the total C allocated in annual increment; the main componentt is net C flux to biomass. The rate of N-min flux from soil pool to NPP is in fact in balance with that soil N-min accumulation in the arolla pine, larch, spruce, and birch plots. In addition, the ecosystems are characterized by a transitional cycling regime evident through non-balanced controlling organic and mineral matter stored in "plant-soil" system blocks.

: материалы временных коллективов / L. V. Mukhortova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 316-336. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The forest floor (O horizon) is a major pool of organic matter in many forests, comprised of a wide range of materials that vary in chemistry and morphology. The processing of fresh detritus progresses with gradual degradation under the influence of biotic and abiotic factors, leading to decreasing particle size and carbon:nitrogen ratios. The carbon contained in annual litterfall inputs equaled 20- 26% of the totral forest floor C content in conifer plots, compared with 48 to 55% in the aspen and birch plots. This material remains in the O1 layer for 2 to 12 months. The Of layer comprises 47 to 85% of the total C content of the forest floor, with residence times of 0.5 to 5 years.

Аннотация: This is a short review of our recent studies on trophic adaptation of a boreal forest pest, the Siberian moth in its native range, North Asia and in Central Europe where the species is believed to invade in a near future. In Europe, the hierarchy in suitability of host plant genera (increasing from two-needle pines, spruce, fir, to larch) remains similar to that in the pest range. Besides European plants, some North American conifers from genera which do not exist in the pest habitat can be served as potential hosts for the insect.

The specific character of fir trees damage has been noted. The chemical analysis showd the accumulation in needle of low index biocenosis sulfates and mercury and decrease of zinc maintenance. We believe that complex character of causes of the decline has a regional specific. The plant biotecnologies for mass production genetically improved seedling of Siberian pine and fir for reforestation programs are developed.

Аннотация: As predicted by the enemy release hypothesis, plants are supposedly less attacked by herbivores in their introduced range than in their native range. However, the nature of the natural enemies, in particular their degree of specificity may also affect the level of enemy escape. It is therefore expected that ectophagous invertebrate species, being generally considered as more generalists than endophagous species, are more prompt to colonise alien plants. In Swiss, Siberian and Russian Far East arboreta, we tested whether alien woody plants are less attacked by native herbivorous insects than native congeneric woody plant species. We also tested the hypothesis that leaf miners and gall makers show stronger preference for native woody plants than external leaf chewers. In all investigated regions, leaf miners and gall makers were more abundant and showed higher species richness on native woody plants than on congeneric alien plants. In contrast, external leaf chewers did not cause more damage to native plants than to alien plants, possibly because leaf chewers are, in general, less species specific than leaf miners and gall makers. These results, obtained over a very large number of plant-enemy systems, generally support the hypothesis that alien plants partly escape from phytophagous invertebrates but also show that different feeding guilds may react differently to the introduction of alien plants.

Аннотация: Stable Ca and radiogenic Sr isotope compositions were measured in different compartments (stream water, soil solutions, rocks, soils and soil leachates and vegetation) of a small permafrost-dominated watershed in the Central Siberian Plateau. The Sr and Ca in the area are supplied by basalt weathering and atmospheric depositions, which significantly impact the Sr isotopic compositions. Only vegetation significantly fractionates the calcium isotopes within the watershed. These fractionations occur during Ca uptake by roots and along the transpiration stream within the larch trees and are hypothesised to be the result of chromatographic processes and Ca oxalate crystallisations during Ca circulation or storage within plant organs. Biomass degradation significantly influences the Ca isotopic compositions of soil solutions and soil leachates via the release of light Ca, and organic and organo-mineral colloids are thought to affect the Ca isotopic compositions of soil solutions by preferential scavenging of Ca-40. The imprint of organic matter degradation on the delta Ca-44/40 of soil solutions is much more significant for the warmer south-facing slope of the watershed than for the shallow and cold soil active layer of the north-facing slope. As a result, the available stock of biomass and the decomposition rates appear to be critical parameters that regulate the impact of vegetation on the soil-water system in permafrost areas. Finally, the obtained delta Ca-44/40 patterns contrast with those described for permafrost-free environments with a much lower delta Ca-44/40 fractionation factor between soils and plants, suggesting specific features of organic matter decomposition in permafrost environments. The biologically induced Ca isotopic fractionation observed at the soil profile scale is not pronounced at the scale of the streams and large rivers in which the delta Ca-44/40 signature may be controlled by the heterogeneity of lithological sources. Аннотация: Thanks to acclimation, trees overcome environmental changes and endure for centuries. The anatomy of water conducting cells is an important factor determining plant success. Forming cells are coupled with the environment and their properties are naturally archived in the wood. Its variability across tree rings can thus provide a retrospective of plant's hydraulic adjustments. In this work, we measured lumen and wall thickness of tracheids along tree-rings to explore how trees regulate their conducting system under variable plant-water conditions. Tracheids were measured along 51 dated rings of five mature Larix decidua and Picea abies trees from a low elevation site. Anatomical-based chronologies of annual growth performance, hydraulic conductance and safety, and construction costs were built. Similarities among chronologies and the relation to monthly climate data were analyzed. Most parameters displayed high annual plasticity which was partly coherent among trees and mostly associated with radial growth. In general, summer drought reduced growth and potential hydraulic conductivity of the forming ring, and increased hydraulic safety and construction costs. To evaluate the functional relevance of the annual acclimation, the conductivity of the forming ring relative to the entire sapwood needs to be assessed.

Аннотация: The dynamics of vegetation have been studied in forest-steppe pine (Pinus symvestris L.) forests affected by anthropogenic factors such as felling and fires. Gradient analysis has been used to reveal specific ecological features of plant communities and trace the main directions of succession. The results show that these forests are at different stages of progressive succession, with the development of theircommunities following similar trends over the past few decades.

Space-time impact of fire events on swamp-forest ecosystems of the west Siberian Plain

Аннотация: An analysis of information on the groundwater dynamics, frequency of fire events, and postfire progressive-age stages of vegetation in the swamp-forest ecosystems of the southern taiga and forest-steppe zone of the West Siberian Plain has shown that fire events are a permanent factor that controls the scales and dynamics of the forest and swamp formation processes under these specific conditions in the modern era. The greatest influence on the dynamics of ecosystems is exerted by the frequency of fires. The scope and depth of the transformation of swamp ecosystems affected by the pyrogenic factor are due to their environmental regimes and have their own properties in different landscapes.
