Carbon and water exchanges of regenerating forests in central Siberia
/ M. Meroni, N. Tchebakova // Forest Ecology and Management. - 2002. - Vol. 169, № 1-2. - С. 115-122

Аннотация: Direct measurements of CO2 and water vapour of regenerating forests after fire events (secondary succession stages) are needed to determine the role of such disturbances in the biome carbon and water cycles functioning. An estimation of the extension of burnt areas is also required in order to quantify NBP (net biome productivity), a variable that includes large-scale carbon losses (such as fire) bypassing heterotrophic respiration. Hence, eddy covariance measurements Of CO2 and water vapour were carried out in a natural regenerating forest after a fire event. Measurements were collected continuously over a Betula spp. stand in central Siberia during summer 1999. Minimum carbon exchange rate (NEE, net ecosystem exchange) exceeded -30 mumol m(-2) s(-1) (net flux negative indicating CO2 uptake by vegetation) and the partitioning of the available energy was mostly dominated by latent heat flux. Structure, age and composition of the forest were analysed to understand the secondary succession stages. The results were compared with previous studies on coniferous forests where biospheric exchanges of energy were dominated by sensible heat fluxes and small carbon uptake rates, thus indicating rather limiting growing conditions. A classification of a Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper scene has been carried out to determine the magnitude of burnt areas and the extension of broadleaf regenerating forests. Analysis of burnt areas spatial frequency and carbon exchanges of the regenerating forest stress the importance of considering large area disturbances for full carbon accounting.     Net ecosystem productivity and peat accumulation in a Siberian Aapa mire
/ E. -D. Schulze, A. S. Prokushkin, E. A. Vaganov // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 531-536

Аннотация: Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was studied in a bog located in the middle taiga of Siberia using two approaches, the accumulation of peat above the hypocotyl of pine trees, and the eddy covariance flux methodology. NEP was 0.84 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using the peat accumulation method; it was 0.43-0.62 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using eddy covariance over three growing seasons. These data were compared with NEP of the surrounding forest, which was 0.6 tC +/- 1.1 hat yr(-1). The trees growing on the bog reached a total height of about 3 m and an age of 80-120 yr when peat accumulation reached 0.5-0.6 m. At that stage the growth rate of the oldest trees declined. This indicates that there is a maximum age that can be reached by trees growing on hummocks (150 yr), depending on conditions. The data show that the determination of NEP in bogs by using the peat accumulation above the hypocotyl is a useful method which can be applied on a wide range of bog types, but it may systematically overestimate NEP. The total sink capacity for carbon assimilation of bogs is comparable to that of forest, although methane emissions and losses of dissolved organic carbon must be taken into account when assessing the regional carbon cycle.

Seasonal and annual variations in the photosynthetic productivity and carbon balance of a central Siberian pine forest
/ J. Lloyd, O. Shibistova et al // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 590-610

Аннотация: We present a first analysis of data (June 1998 to December 2000) from the long-term eddy covariance site established in a Pinus sylvestris stand near Zotino in central Siberia as part of the EUROSIBERIAN CARBONFLUX project. As well as examining seasonal patterns in netecosystem exchange (N-E), daily, seasonal and annual estimates of the canopy photosynthesis (or gross primary productivity, G(P)) were obtained using N-E and ecosystem respiration measurements. Although the forest was a small (but significant) source of CO2 throughout the snow season (typically mid-October to early May) there was a rapid commencement of photosynthetic capacity shortly following the commencement of above-zero air temperatures in spring: in 1999 the forest went from a quiescent state to significant photosynthetic activity in only a few days. Nevertheless, canopy photosynthetic capacity was observed to continue to increase slowly throughout the summer months for both 1999 and 2000, reaching a maximum capacity in early August. During September there was a marked decline in canopy photosynthesis which was only partially attributable to less favourable environmental conditions. This suggests a reduction in canopy photosynthetic capacity in autumn, perhaps associated with the cold hardening process. For individual time periods the canopy. photosynthetic rate was mostly dependent upon incoming photon irradiance. However, reductions in both canopy conductance and overall photosynthetic rate in response to high canopy-to-air vapour differences were clearly evident on hot dry days. The relationship between canopy conductance and photosynthesis was examined using Cowan's notion of optimality in which stomata serve to maximise the marginal evaporative cost of plant carbon gain. The associated Lagrangian multiplier (lambda) was surprisingly constant throughout the growing season. Somewhat remarkably, however, its value was markedly different between years, being 416 mol mol(-1) in 1999 but 815 mol mol(-1) in 2000. Overall the forest was a substantial sink for CO2 in both 1999 and 2000: around 13 Mol C m(-2) a(-1). Data from this experiment, when combined with estimates of net primary productivity from biomass sampling suggest that about 20% of this sink was associated with increasing plant biomass and about 80% with an increase in the litter and soil organic carbon pools. This high implied rate of carbon accumulation in the litter soil organic matter pool seems unsustainable in the long term and is hard to explain on the basis of current knowledge.

Birches as sap producing species of Russia: their distribution, ecophysiological features, utilization and sap productivity
: материалы временных коллективов / O. Zyryanova, M. Terazawa, T. Koike // Tree sap 3. Proceedings of the 3rd International symposium on sap utilization (ISSU) in Bifuka 2005, Hokkaido, Japan, April 15-17, 2005. - Sapporo : Hokkaido University Press, 2005. - С. 19-36. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Four birch species are traditionally used for the sap harvesting in Russia. In the report, we discuss their spatial and ecophysiological features as well as the exudation, tapping periods and sap productivity. Biochemical constituents of the living tissues of the birches such as the wood, outer and inner bark, twigs, leaves, buds, roots, and exudated birch sap are also reviewed. We show numerous useful wooden, medicinal, tanning, coloring as well as feeding and decorative properties. Chaga - a fungi-parasite developed on the stems of the birch trees, is mentioned to be famous due to its antitumor and/or especially anti-cancer activity. It is reported that the former birch sap production closed completely at the transition to a market-economy has restarted in the Russian Far East.

Productivity of six tree species plantations for three decades in the Siberian afforestation experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / V. V. Kuzmichev, L. S. Pshenichnikova, V. A. Tretyakova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 269-280. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Measurements were made of height, diameter and number of trees in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment for monoculture plots with six tree species, established in the central part of the Krasnoyarsk region. Almost 150 felled trees were measured to evaluate aboveground biomass fractions determine biomass dynamics through stand development. Local uncertainties in needle mass dynamics were revealed for Scots and arolla pine stands. Carbon storage was evaluated for live trees and in biomass of dead trees and fall of branches and needles. Over the 35 years of stand development, these species accumulated 100 to 300 m3/ha of wood, with a likely carbon content about 25 to 75 Mg/ha. The trees also added a large amount of C to the soil in fallen leaves, branches, and dead roots. In this region, Norway spruce and arolla pine form the longest-lived forests, and may have higher productivities than the other species later in stand development.

Aspen bark photosynthesis and its significance to remote sensing and carbon budget estimates in the boreal ecosystem
: материалы временных коллективов / V. I. Kharuk // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 483-497. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Our findings have shown that the spectral characteristics of aspen bark differ considerably from the "grey body" representations typically utilised in radiative transfer models. Also, since the bark and leaf canopy fractions have different C assimilation capacities, the partitioning of canopy Chl into leaf and bark strata should improve C assimilation estimates. Remote sensing technology must be relied upon, especially in vast and largely in accessible regions such as the boreal biome, for landscape- and regional-scale studies of C budgets. In these studies, estimates of forest productivity and C exchange currently rely on spectral indices obtained from remote satellite/aircraft sensors; these spectral ratios are used to indirectly estimate C assimilation through correlation with chlorophyll and photosynthetic capacity.

Potential change in lodgepole pine site index and distribution under climatic change in Alberta
: материалы временных коллективов / Robert A. Monserud [и др.] // Canadian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 38, № 2. - С. 343-352. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We estimated the impact of global climate change on lodgepole pine site productivity in Alberta based on the Alberts Climate Model and the A2 SRES climate change scenario projections from three global circulation models (CGCM2, HADCM3, and ECHAM4). Cosiderable warming ia apparent in all three models. On average, the increases in mean GDD5 (growing degree-day 5 degrees C) are 18%, 38%, and 65% by the 2020s, 2050s, respectively. Change in precipitation is essentially nil. This results in proportioanal increases in dryness index. We used the dryness index to predict the potential future range and GDD5 to predict its potential productivity.

Аннотация: Larch stand structure and vegetation changes along the longitudinal transect in the Putorana Mountains, Northen Siberia were studied to assess how forest-tundra ecotone has shifted during the last century in an extremely remote and untouched area in Eurasia. In summary, our study demonstrates that ongoing climatic changes led to an upslope expansion of forests in the remote Putorana Mountains, which alters the stand structure and productivity of forest-tundra ecotone. However, these vegetation changes are very likely of minor importance for aboveground carbon sequestration.

Аннотация: Annual dissolved organic (DOC) and inorganic (DIC) carbon concentrations and fluxes in rivers were obtained for 5 large-scale watersheds (15,000-174,000 km2) within Central Siberian Plateau (Yenisey River basin). There are two contamporary limitations of terrigenic C export across Siberia: (1) mobilization of available pools of C is constrained by low precipitation in severe climate of interior Siberia, and (2) low productivity of ecosystems, show weathering rates and/or wildfire disturbance lessen the mobilezeable pools of organic and inorganic C.

Аннотация: The objects of research were pine stands, formed naturally in the former agricultural lands in Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe. Trial and control plots were established in the stands, after thinning of different intensity (93% and 57% of number of stems). The work is based on the experimental data, obtained during the analysis of transverse slices images of model trees at the root collar. Realization of the potential productivity of individual trees as a result of thinning is mostly expressed in trees of higher ranks, and only afetr intensive thinning.
