    Climatic control of stand thinning in unmanaged spruce forests of the southern taiga in European Russia

Аннотация: The demography of Picea abies trees was studied over a period of about 30 yr on permanent plots in six forest types of an unmanaged forest located in a forest reserve of the Southern Taiga, NW of Moscow. This study encompassed a broad range of conditions that are typical for old growth spruce forests in the boreal region, including sites with a high water table and well drained sites, podzolic soils, acidic soils and organic soils. At all sites stand density, tree height, breast height diameter and age has been periodically recorded since 1968. Tree density ranged between 178 and 1035 trees ha(-1) for spruce and between 232 and 1168 trees ha-1 for the whole stand, including mainly Betula and Populus. Biomass ranged between 5.4 and 170 t(dw) ha(-1) for spruce and between 33 to 198 td, ha(-1) for the whole stand. Averaged over a long period of time, biomass did not change with stand density according to the self-thinning rule. in fact, on most sites biomass remained almost constant in the long term, while stand density decreased. The study demonstrates that the loss of living trees was not regulated by competitive interactions between trees, but by disturbances caused by climatic events. Dry years caused losses of minor and younger trees without affecting biomass. In contrast, periodic storms resulted in a loss of biomass without affecting density, except for extreme events, where the whole stand may fall. Dry years followed by wet years enhance the effect on stand density. Since mainly younger trees were lost, the apparent average age of the stand increased more than real time (20% for Picea). Average mortality was 2.8 +/- 0.5% yr(-1) for spruce. Thus, the forest is turned over once every 160-180 yr by disturbances. The demography of dead trees shows that the rate of decay depends on the way the tree died. Storm causes uprooting and stem breakage, where living trees fall to the forest floor and decay with a mean residence time (t(1/2)) of about 16 yr (decomposition rate constant k(d) = 0.042 yr(-1)). This contrasts with trees that die by drought or insect damage, and which remain as standing dead trees with a mean residence time of 3-13 yr until they are brought to ground, mainly by wind. These standing dead trees require an additional mean residence time of about 22 yr for decay on the ground (k(d) = 0.031). In conclusion, we demonstrate that, rather than competitive interactions, it is climate extremes, namely drought, rapid changes of dry years followed by wet years, and storm that determine stand structure, biomass and density, which then affect the net exchange with the atmosphere. The climatic effects are difficult to predict, because the sensitivity of a stand to climate extremes depends on the past history. This may range from no effect, if the stand was recovering from an earlier drought and exhibited a relatively low density, to a total collapse of canopies, if drought reduces stand density to an extent that other climatic extremes (especially wind) may cause further damage.

    Net ecosystem productivity and peat accumulation in a Siberian Aapa mire

Аннотация: Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was studied in a bog located in the middle taiga of Siberia using two approaches, the accumulation of peat above the hypocotyl of pine trees, and the eddy covariance flux methodology. NEP was 0.84 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using the peat accumulation method; it was 0.43-0.62 tC ha(-1) yr(-1) using eddy covariance over three growing seasons. These data were compared with NEP of the surrounding forest, which was 0.6 tC +/- 1.1 hat yr(-1). The trees growing on the bog reached a total height of about 3 m and an age of 80-120 yr when peat accumulation reached 0.5-0.6 m. At that stage the growth rate of the oldest trees declined. This indicates that there is a maximum age that can be reached by trees growing on hummocks (150 yr), depending on conditions. The data show that the determination of NEP in bogs by using the peat accumulation above the hypocotyl is a useful method which can be applied on a wide range of bog types, but it may systematically overestimate NEP. The total sink capacity for carbon assimilation of bogs is comparable to that of forest, although methane emissions and losses of dissolved organic carbon must be taken into account when assessing the regional carbon cycle.

    Soil carbon inventories and carbon-13 on a latitude transect in Siberia

Аннотация: We present soil organic carbon (SOC) inventories and carbon isotope compositions from over 900 samples collected in areas of minimally disturbed mature vegetation on freely drained soils (excluding peatlands) on a 1000 km transect along the Yennisey River, central Siberia. Carbon inventories over 0-30 cm depth range widely from 1.71 to 7.05 kg m(-2). While an effect of changing climate or vegetation along the transect cannot be ruled out, the observed differences in SOC inventories are largely the result of variations in mineral soil texture, with inventories in fine-textured soils being approximately double those in coarse-textured soils. The delta(13)C values of SOC in the 0-5 cm interval ranged from -26.3 to -28.0parts per thousand, with delta(13)C values for the 5-30 cm interval being 0.9 +/- 0.8parts per thousand (1sigma) enriched in C-13 relative to the 0-5 cm samples. The average delta(13)C value for the 0-5 cm interval for all samples was -27.1 +/- 0.6parts per thousand (1sigma) and for the full 0-30 cm interval the average was -26.5 +/- 0.5parts per thousand (1sigma). In general, delta(13)C values were higher in coarse-textured soils and lower in fine-textured soils. The results of detailed sampling of soils in Pinus sylvestris forest growing on sand near the Zotino flux tower suggest an SOC inventory in these soils of 2.22 +/- 0.35 kg m(-2) over 30 cm and an average delta(13)C value of -26.3 +/- 0.2parts per thousand over the 0-5 cm depth interval and -25.9 +/- 0.3parts per thousand over 0-30 cm. Recent burning had no effect on SOC inventories, but clearing has led to an average 25% decrease on SOC inventories from 0-30 cm over 12 yr. Neither burning nor clearing had a discernible effect on the delta(13)C value of SOC.

    Three years of trace gas observations over the EuroSiberian domain derived from aircraft sampling - a concerted action

Аннотация: A three-year trace gas climatology of CO2 and its stable isotopic ratios, as well as CH4, N2O and SF6, derived from regular vertical aircraft sampling over the Eurasian continent is presented. The four sampling sites range from about 1degreesE to 89degreesE in the latitude belt from 48N to 62degreesN. The most prominent features of the CO2 observations are an increase of the seasonal cycle amplitudes of CO2 and delta(13)C-CO2 in the free troposphere (at 3000 m a.s.l.) by more than 60% from Western Europe to Western and Central Siberia. delta(18)O-CO2 shows an even larger increase of the seasonal cycle amplitude by a factor of two from Western Europe towards the Ural mountains, which decreases again towards the most eastern site, Zotino. These data reflect a strong influence of carbon exchange fluxes with the continental biosphere. In particular, during autumn and winter delta(18)O-CO2 shows a decrease by more than 0.5parts per thousand from Orleans (Western Europe) to Syktyvkar (Ural mountains) and Zotino (West Siberia), mainly caused by soil respiration fluxes depleted in delta(18)O with respect to atmospheric CO2. CH4 mixing ratios in the free troposphere at 3000 m over Western Siberia are higher by about 20-30 ppb if compared to Western Europe. Wetland emissions seem to be particularly visible in July-September, with largest signals at Zotino in 1998. Annual mean CH4 mixing ratios decrease slightly from 1998 to 1999 at all Russian sites. In contrast to CO2 and CH4, which show significant vertical gradients between 2000 and 3000 m a.s.l., N2O mixing ratios are vertically very homogeneous and show no significant logitudinal gradient between the Ural mountains and Western Siberia, indicating insignificant emissions of this trace gas from boreal forest ecosystems in Western Siberia. The growth rate of N2O (1.2-1.3 ppb yr(-1)) and the seasonal amplitude (0:5-1.1 ppb) are similar at both aircraft sites, Syktyvkar and Zotino. For SF6 an annual increase of 5% is observed, together with a small seasonal cycle which is in phase with the N2O cycle, indicating that the seasonality of both trace gases are most probably caused by atmospheric transport processes with a possible contribution from stratosphere-troposphere exchange.

Аннотация: The integrating properties of the atmospheric boundary layer allow the influence of surface exchange processes on the atmosphere to be quantified and estimates of large-scale fluxes of trace gases and plant isotopic discrimination to be made. Five flights were undertaken over two days in and above the convective boundary layer (CBL) in a vegetated region in central Siberia. Vertical profiles Of CO2 and H2O concentrations, temperature and pressure were obtained during each flight. Air flask samples were taken at various heights for carbon and oxygen isotopic analysis Of CO2. Two CBL budget methods were compared to estimate regional surface fluxes Of CO2 and plant isotopic discrimination against (CO2)-C-13 and (COO)-O-18-O-16. Flux estimates were compared to ground-based eddy covariance measurements. The fluxes obtained for CO2 using the first method agreed to within 10% of fluxes measured in the forest at the study site by eddy covariance. Those obtained from the second method agreed to within 35% when a correction was applied for air loss out of the integrating column and for subsidence. The values for C-13 discrimination were within the range expected from knowledge Of C-3 plant discriminations during photosynthesis, while the inferred O-18 discrimination varied considerably over the two-day period. This variation may in part be explained by the enrichment of chloroplast water during the day due to evaporation from an initial signature in the morning close to source water. Additional potential complications arising from the heterogeneous nature of the landscape are discussed.

    The transformation of plant residues under different tree species in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment

Аннотация: The forest floor (O horizon) is a major pool of organic matter in many forests, comprised of a wide range of materials that vary in chemistry and morphology. The processing of fresh detritus progresses with gradual degradation under the influence of biotic and abiotic factors, leading to decreasing particle size and carbon:nitrogen ratios. The carbon contained in annual litterfall inputs equaled 20- 26% of the totral forest floor C content in conifer plots, compared with 48 to 55% in the aspen and birch plots. This material remains in the O1 layer for 2 to 12 months. The Of layer comprises 47 to 85% of the total C content of the forest floor, with residence times of 0.5 to 5 years.

    The structure and biodiversity after fire disturbance

Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

Аннотация: Research to monitor and document surface fire behavior characteristics in Scots pine forests of Central Siberia. Fifteen successful burns were conducted under a range of burning conditions (2000-2003). Fuel consumption, depth of burn, rate of spread, and fire line intensity were successfully modelled using the Russian Moisture Index (PV-1) or the Canadian Forest Fire Weather Index System as the independent variables, which should prove useful in suppression efforts undertaken by Russian fire agencies.

    Potential change in lodgepole pine site index and distribution under climatic change in Alberta

Аннотация: We estimated the impact of global climate change on lodgepole pine site productivity in Alberta based on the Alberts Climate Model and the A2 SRES climate change scenario projections from three global circulation models (CGCM2, HADCM3, and ECHAM4). Cosiderable warming ia apparent in all three models. On average, the increases in mean GDD5 (growing degree-day 5 degrees C) are 18%, 38%, and 65% by the 2020s, 2050s, respectively. Change in precipitation is essentially nil. This results in proportioanal increases in dryness index. We used the dryness index to predict the potential future range and GDD5 to predict its potential productivity.

Аннотация: This is a short review of our recent studies on trophic adaptation of a boreal forest pest, the Siberian moth in its native range, North Asia and in Central Europe where the species is believed to invade in a near future. In Europe, the hierarchy in suitability of host plant genera (increasing from two-needle pines, spruce, fir, to larch) remains similar to that in the pest range. Besides European plants, some North American conifers from genera which do not exist in the pest habitat can be served as potential hosts for the insect.

This resource will be addressed to a wide range of users: scientific, teachers, students and others interested in leaf miners and entomology in general.

Аннотация: This paper studies the structure and dynamics of the major pools of organic matter in clearings in the lichen pine forests of the middle taiga subzone of Yenisei Siberia, in the range of measurements of the international observatory Zotto, a high-tech research platform for long-term ( 30 years) monitoring of the atmosphere and climate changes. The contribution of phytocenoses at different stages of post-clearing succession in the process of deposition of atmospheric carbon is analyzed. In conjunction with the data on atmospheric measurements of a wide range of greenhouse gases carried out at the base of the observatory, the results of this work will be used for modeling the stocks and flows of carbon in forest ecosystems of Central Siberia. Аннотация: As predicted by the enemy release hypothesis, plants are supposedly less attacked by herbivores in their introduced range than in their native range. However, the nature of the natural enemies, in particular their degree of specificity may also affect the level of enemy escape. It is therefore expected that ectophagous invertebrate species, being generally considered as more generalists than endophagous species, are more prompt to colonise alien plants. In Swiss, Siberian and Russian Far East arboreta, we tested whether alien woody plants are less attacked by native herbivorous insects than native congeneric woody plant species. We also tested the hypothesis that leaf miners and gall makers show stronger preference for native woody plants than external leaf chewers. In all investigated regions, leaf miners and gall makers were more abundant and showed higher species richness on native woody plants than on congeneric alien plants. In contrast, external leaf chewers did not cause more damage to native plants than to alien plants, possibly because leaf chewers are, in general, less species specific than leaf miners and gall makers. These results, obtained over a very large number of plant-enemy systems, generally support the hypothesis that alien plants partly escape from phytophagous invertebrates but also show that different feeding guilds may react differently to the introduction of alien plants.

Аннотация: The development of research into the history of tree growth and inferred summer temperature changes in Yamaha spanning the last 2000 years is reviewed. One focus is the evolving production of tree-ring width (TRW) and tree-ring maximum-latewood density (MXD) larch (Larix sibirica) chronologies, incorporating different applications of Regional Curve Standardisation (RCS). Another focus is the comparison of independent data representing past tree growth in adjacent Yamaha areas: Yamal and Polar Urals, and the examination of the evidence for common growth behaviour at different timescales. The sample data we use are far more numerous and cover a longer time-span at Yamal compared to the Polar Urals, but Yamal has only TRW, while there are both TRW and MXD for the Polar Urals. We use more data (sub-fossil and from living trees) than in previous dendroclimatic studies in this region. We develop a new TRW chronology for Yamal, more than 2000 years long and running up to 2005. For the Polar Urals we develop new TRW and MXD chronologies that show good agreement at short (<15 years) and medium (15-100 years) timescales demonstrating the validity of attempts to reconcile the evidence of longer-timescale information that they provide. We use a "conservative" application of the RCS approach (two-curve signal-free RCS), guarding against the possibility of "modern sample bias": a possible inflation of recent chronology values arising out of inadvertent selection of mostly relatively fast-growing trees in recent centuries. We also transform tree indices to have a normal distribution to remove the positive chronology skew often apparent in RCS TRW chronologies. This also reduces the apparent magnitude of 20th century tree-growth levels. There is generally good agreement between all chronologies as regards the major features of the decadal to centennial variability. Low tree-growth periods for which the inferred summer temperatures are approximately 2.5 degrees C below the 1961-90 reference are apparent in the 15-year smoothed reconstructions, centred around 1005, 1300, 1455, 1530, particularly the 1810s where the inferred cooling reaches -4 degrees C or even -6 degrees C for individual years, and the 1880s. These are superimposed on generally cool pre-20th century conditions: the long-term means of the pre-1900 reconstructed temperature anomalies range from -0.6 to -0.9 degrees C in our alternative reconstructions. There are numerous periods of one or two decades with relatively high growth (and inferred summer temperatures close to the 1961-1990 level) but at longer timescales only the 40-year period centred at 250 CE appears comparable with 20th century warmth. Although the central temperature estimate for this period is below that for the recent period, when we take into account the uncertainties we cannot be highly confident that recent warmth has exceeded the temperature of this earlier warm period. While there are clear warm decades either side of 1000 CE, neither TRW nor MXD data support the conclusion that temperatures were exceptionally high during medieval times. One previous version of the Polar Urals TRW chronology is shown here to be in error due to an injudicious application of RCS to non-homogeneous sample data, partly derived from root-collar samples that produce spuriously high chronology values in the 11th and 15th centuries. This biased chronology has been used in a number of recent studies aimed at reconstructing wider scale temperature histories. All of the chronologies we have produced here clearly show a generally high level of growth throughout their most recent 80 years. Allowing for chronology and reconstruction uncertainty, the mean of the last 100 years of the reconstruction is likely warmer than any century in the last 2000 years in this region. Аннотация: Premise of the study: Xylem structure determines the hydraulic and mechanical properties of a stem, and its plasticity is fundamental for maintaining tree performance under changing conditions. Unveiling the mechanism and the range of xylem adjustment is thus necessary to anticipate climate change impacts on vegetation. Methods: To understand the mechanistic process and the functional impact of xylem responses to warming in a cold-limited environment, we investigated the relationship between temperature and tracheid anatomy along a 312-yr tree-ring chronology of Larix sibirica trees from the Altay Mountains in Russia. Key results: Climate-growth analyses indicated that warming favors wider earlywood cell lumen, thicker laewood walls, denser maximum latewood, and wider rings. The temperature signal of the latewood was stronger (r > 0.7) and covered a longer and more stable period (from June to August) than that of earlywood and tree-ring width. Long-term analyses indicated a diverging trend between lumen and cell wall of early-and latewood. Conclusions: Xylem anatomy appears to respond to warming temperatures. A warmer early-growing season raises water conduction capacity by increasing the number and size of earlywood tracheids. The higher-performing earlywood tracheids promote more carbon fixation of the latewood cells by incrementing the rate of assimilation when summer conditions are favorable for growth. The diverging long-term variation of lumen and cell wall in earlywood vs. latewood suggests that xylem adjustments in latewood increase mechanical integrity and support increasing tree size under the ameliorated growing conditions.

Аннотация: The sowing qualities of the seeds of Abies sibirica Ledeb. from trees of I to V Kraft grades and the total content of nitrogen in the seeds were determined. The best qualities are found in the seeds taken from the middle part of the cones growing in the upper part of crowns of trees of I and II Kraft grades. The nitrogen content in the seeds varies within the range 2.7-3.46 mg/g and depends on the growth and development of the trees. The correlation between these characteristics was found to be 0.81-0.94.

Аннотация: A fire history of northern larch forests was studied. These larch forests are found near the northern limit of their range at similar to 71 degrees N, where fires are predominantly caused by lightning strikes rather than human activity. Fire-return intervals (FRIs) were calculated based on fire scars and dates of tree natality. Tree natality was used as an approximation of the date of the last fire. The average FRI was found to be 295 +/- 57 years, which is the longest reported for larch-dominated stands. Prior studies reported 80-90-year FRIs at 64 degrees N and similar to 200 years near the latitude of the Arctic Circle. Comparing data from fires that occurred in 1700-1849 (end of the Little Ice Age, LIA) and 1850-1999 (post-LIA warming) indicates approximately twice as many fires occurred during the latter period. This agrees with the hypothesis that observed climatic warming will result in an increase in fire frequency. Our results also indicate that fires that did not leave visible fire scars on the tree stem may be identified based on the date of growth release revealed from dendrochronology.

Аннотация: The microbial activity of peat soils was studied in boggy larch forests and in an oligo-mesotrophic bog in the basins of the Kochechum and Nizhnaya Tunguska rivers (central Evenkia). It was found that the organic matter transformation in the peat soils of all the plots is mainly performed by oligotrophic bacteria composing 88-98% of the total bacterial complex. The major contribution to the organic matter destruction belonged to the heterotrophic microorganisms, the activity of which depended on the permafrost depth and the soil temperature, the soil acidity, and the botanical composition of the peat. Peat soils were characterized by different activities as judged from their microbiological and biochemical parameters. The functioning of microbial communities in the studied ecotopes of the permafrost zone was within the range of natural variations, which pointed to their ecological stability.
