The conservation and quality of Gmelin larch seeds in cryolithic zone of Central Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / A. P. Abaimov [и др.] // Proceedings of the eighth symposium on the joint Siberian permafrost studies between Japan and Russia in 1999. - Onogawa : National Institute for Environmental Studies, 2000. - С. 3-9. - рус. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The obtained experimental data testify that even in the case of stands mortality as a result of ground fires it is right to count on quite successful natural regeneration of Gmelin larch on burned areas. It is right to consider genetically conditioned ability of Larix gmelini to conserve a part of quality seeds in ripe cones for 3-4 years as an adaptive reaction of the species to periodical wildfire impacts which are the main destabilizing factor in high latitudes of real zone in Eurasia.

Modelling forest regeneration processes in clear-cut and burned areas in Angara Region
: материалы временных коллективов / V. A. Sokolov, S. K. Farber, I. M. Danilin // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 155-160. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: A method to select measures for enhancing natural forest-regeneration process in areas under extensive management is discussed. Using available information on geomorphological site characteristics and stand parameters, indices are determined using a specific criterion that describes the forest regeneration process. Using these indices as model inputs, cleacuts and burns can be classified; within each stratum the natural forest regeneration proces is similar. Analysing these strata, one can select a regime of forest treatment that is appropriate for a given stratum and, consequently, for the clearcuts (or burns) it includes.

The structure and biodiversity after fire disturbance
: материалы временных коллективов / O. A. Zyryanova, V. I. Zyryanov et al // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 19-29. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

Regeneration after forest fires in mixed conifer broad-leaved forests of the Amur region in Far Eastern Russia: the relationship between species specific traits against fire and recent fire regimes
: материалы временных коллективов / M. Kobayashi, Y. P. Nemilostiv, O. A. Zyryanova et al // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 51-58. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The number of forest fires has been increasing in the mixed conifer broad-leaved forests in the southern part of Far Eastern Russia. We should analyze the effect of this new fire regime on the vegetation and carbon budget in the forest ecosystem of this region. As each woody species develops specific traits to adapt to certain fire regimes, a change of fire regime affects each species differently. This can result in the alteration of the species composition of forest ecosystems. In the present study, we rewieded those adaptive traits exhibited by species in the region, and hypothesized a possible mechsnism for the changes of species composition and amount of biomass stock that would result from the new fire regime. The new fire regime described were an increased frequency of both intense canopy fires and low intensity surface fires. Both kinds of increased fire result in an increase of Betula platyphylla forests, but with different mechanisms. We proposed that an increase of Betula platyphylla forests due to either mechanism results in a decrease of biomass density.

Evidence of evergreen conifer invasion into larch dominated forests during recent decades in Central Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / V. I. Kharuk, K. Ranson, M. Dvinskaya // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-2. - С. 163-171. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Models of climate warming predict the migration of "warm-adapted' species to habitates of "cold-adapted" species. Here we show evidence of expansion of "dark-needle" conifers (DNC: Siberian pine, spruce and fir) into the habitat of larch, the leader in adaptation to harsh climatic conditions in Asia. The studies were made along two transects oriented from the western and southern borders of a larch dominated forest to its center. The invasion of DNC into the historical larch habitat was quantified as an increase of the proportion of those species both in the overstory and in regeneration. The age structure of regeneration showed that regeneration occurred mainly during the last 2-3 decades. In particular warm winter temperatures promote the survival regenerated Siberian pine. The results obtained indicate the climate-driven migration of Siberian pine, spruce and fir into traditional zone of larch dominance. Substitution of a deciduous conifer (larch) by evergreen conifers decreases the albedo and may provide positive feedback for temperature increases.

Evidence of evergreen conifers invasion into larch dominated forests during recent decades
: материалы временных коллективов / V. I. Kharuk, K. J. Ranson, M. L. Dvinskaya // Environmental change in Siberia: earth observation, field studies and modelling. - Dordrecht et. al. : Springer, 2010. - С. 53-65. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The results obtained indicate a DNC and birch invasion into a traditional larch domination zone, and the connection of this phenomenon with climatic trends during last decades. On the western and southern margions DNC regeneration formed a second layer in the forest canopies, which could eventually replace the larch in the overstory. Larch as a species also responds to climatic trends: its radial increment significantly increased during last 3 decades, and this increase correlates with summer temperatures and precipitation. The other larch response is the migration into the trundra zone and a crown closure increase, as was found on the key-sites "Polar Ural"and "Ary-Mas". The resulting effect of this process may be that larch could reach the Arctic shore, a phenomenon that has happened in a former epoch, whereas the traditional area of larch dominance will turn to mixed taiga forest.

Siberian pine and larch response to climate warming in the Southern Siberian mountain forest: tundra ecotone

Аннотация: The tree response to climate trends is most likely observable in the forest-tundra ecotone where temperature limits tree growth. Here we show that trees in the forest-tundra ecotone of the mid of the south Siberian Mountains responded strongly to wasrmer temperatures during the past two decades. There was a growth increment increase, stand densification, regeneration propogation into the alpine tundra, and transformation of prostrate Siberian pine, larch and fir into another arboreal forms.

Аннотация: Soil and water protection functions of boreal forests in West Sayan and Northern Priangarye are greatly effected by forest industry, firstly, timber cutting. After concentrated timber felling all ecological forest functions are changing. On the base of long time forest and hydrology investigations on cuts and in secondary forest an estimation of water balance was made taking into account forest structure change during regeneration succsssion. Obtained data showed soil erosion rate depending on soil properties, topography, and moisture conditions, the latter determining surface runoff development.

Аннотация: Topo-ecological profile through the central part of Long ridge is described in 2006-2011. It demonstrates a complex pattern of spatial dastribution of the forest and steppe patches on the southern slope of the ridge. At about 320 m alt. abundant pine regeneration was found in surrounding of meadow-steppe. At about 460 m alt. on the northern sloppe some patches of sparse fir regeneration were revealed. The data are interesting for long-term monitoring of current state and dynamics of forest-steppe ecotone vegetation.

Аннотация: The relative role of fire and of climate in determining canopy species composition and aboveground carbon stocks were investigated. Measurements were made along a transect extending from the dark taiga zone of central Siberia, where Picea and Abies dominate the canopy, into the Larix zone of eastern Siberia. We test the hypotheses that the change in canopy species composition is based (1) on climate-driven performance only, (2) on fire only, or (3) on fire-performance interactions. We show that the evergreen conifers Picea obovata and Abies sibirica are the natural late-successional species both in central and eastern Siberia, provided there has been no fire for an extended period of time. There are no changes in performance of the observed species along the transect. Fire appears to be the main factor explaining the dominance of Larix and of soil carbon. Of lesser influence were longitude as a proxy for climate, local hydrology and active-layer thickness. We can only partially explain fire return frequency, which is not only related to climate and land cover, but also to human behavior. Stand-replacing fires decreased from 300 to 50 yrs between the Yenisei Ridge and the upper Tunguska. Repeated non-stand-replacing surface fires eliminated the regeneration of Abies and Picea. With every 100 yrs since the last fire, the percentage of Larix decreased by 20%. Biomass of stems of single trees did not show signs of age-related decline. Relative diameter increment was 0.41 +/- 0.20% at breast height and stem volume increased linearly over time with a rate of about 0.36 t C ha(-1) yr(-1) independent of age class and species. Stand biomass reached about 130 t C ha(-1)(equivalent to about 520 m(3) ha(-1)). Individual trees of Larix were older than 600 yrs. The maximum age and biomass seemed to be limited by fungal rot of heart wood. 60% of old Larix and Picea and 30% of Pinus sibirica trees were affected by stem rot. Implications for the future role of fire and of plant diseases are discussed.

Аннотация: The elevational tree-line change within the transitional zone between boreal forest and Mongolian steppes was quantified for the last millennium. The basic approach included studies along transects and measurements of tree-line positions to identify current, historical, refugee and regeneration tree lines. Tree mortality and natality were determined based on dendrochronology analysis. Tree mortality in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries coincided with the Little Ice Age, while tree establishment was stimulated by warming at the end of nineteenth century. Downward shifts in tree line varied by an order of magnitude. The current tree-line position reoccupied the historical tree line in some transects, and was below or above the historical line in others. The regeneration line surpassed the historical tree line by 91 +/- 46 m (mean +/- SD). Such a heterogeneous response was attributed to local topoclimatic conditions and sapling recruitment efficiency. A mean annual 1 degrees C increase in temperature was associated with an upward shift of the tree line by about 70 m. The upward migration rate of the current tree line was about 0.8 m year-1 during the last century. The regeneration migration rate was about 2.3 m year-1 over the past three decades. Finally, the transformation of krummholz forms of larch and Siberian pine into arborescent form was documented.

Аннотация: The southern coast of Baikal is characterized by the most humid climate in the Baikal region. Precipitation falls mainly on summer, thus reducing the actual of fire occurrence in mountain forests of the region. However, since 1989 the fire occurrence has been increased and disastrous crown fires have become more frequent, especially in the west. It is shown that fire occurrence is a function of the number, duration of rainless periods and monthly sums of rain precipitation, which have large amplitude of changes from year to year. Progressive pyrogenic successions in dark coniferous forests take place mostly without usual replacement by small-leaved tree species at the expense of successful regeneration of Pinus sibirica (in the western Khamar-Daban mountains) and Abies sibirica (in the central part) on the burnt areas during 15-25 years.

Аннотация: Landsat data were used to examine the effect of large-scale insect outbreaks in the forests of southern Siberia. Two insect outbreaks were studied: Ket-Chulym, similar to1.5 million hectares of forest damaged between 1954 and 1957; and Priangar'e, similar to0.5-0.7 million hectares of forest damaged between 1994 and 1996. Landsat scenes from 1980 to 2000 were analyzed. The optimal Landsat channels combination for detecting damage classes were bands 2 (0.525-0.605 mum), 4 (0.750-0.900 mum), 5 (1.55-1.75 mum), and 6 (10.40-12.50 mum). The damage to the forests caused an increase inradiometric temperature (20.20 +/- 0.04degreesC for damaged forests versus 19.47 +/- 0.02degreesC for healthy forests). The following pattern of forest succession was observed in the outbreak areas: dead stands with dense grass and shrub communities, burn scars, grass and shrub formations, open woodlands, closed young and middle-age birch stands, mature birch stands, and mixed conifer-deciduous stands. Forest regeneration goes through long-term species-change successions, and the rate depends on the size of the outbreak area. On-ground mapping after the outbreak and later Landsat analysis showed that even 45 years after the Ket-Chulym outbreak the area of forests did not increase. In the Priangar'e area approximately 45% of damaged forests have recovered.

Аннотация: Seven Hylobius species are known from Siberia, while the occurrence of three of them is doubtful. Information available about the supplementary feeding of adult weevils is reviewed. It is likely that H. abietis and H. albosparsus are the only species of economic significance in this territory. In the northern forest-steppe zone, adult weevils usually prefer to feed separately on isolated or border young trees under the canopy of light Scots pine stands, but avoid the undercanopy regeneration in the dense stands. In the southern taiga zone, adults are abundant on cutover areas where they feed in clumps of young regeneration. Tn fresh clearcuts, up to 100% of juvenile trees may be damaged by the feeding of weevils, whereas the damage intensity declines sharply with the distance to the clearcut. An edge effect in the distribution of adult weevils needs verification and, probably, is time-dependent. Inside the stands, the crowns of mature trees may constitute an additional food niche for adults if the usual sources and preferred environmental conditions are not available.
