Climatic factors influencing fluxes of dissolved organic carbon from the forest floor in a continuous-permafrost Siberian watershed
: материалы временных коллективов / A. S. Prokushkin [и др.] // Canadian Journal of Forest Research. - 2005. - Vol. 35, : 9. - С. 2130-2140

Аннотация: Fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in forested watersheds underlain by permafrost are likely to vary with changes in climatic regime that increase soil moisture and temperature. It was examined the effects of temporal and spatial variations in soil temperature and moisture on DOC fluxes from the forest floor contrasting north- and south-facing slopes in central Siberia.

Biochemistry of carbon and nitrogen in the Siberian Afforestation Experiment
: материалы временных коллективов / E. F. Vedrova // Tree species effects on soils: implications for global change. - 2005. - С. 281-292. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: We evaluated parameters (stock and flux) carbon, nitrogen and ash element cycling in the plant-soil system. The study was performed in arolla pine, Scots pine, Siberian larch, Norway spruce, aspen and birch plantations established on Kemchug upland, Chulym-Yenisei denudational plain, in 1968-1972. Young ecosystems (age class 2) that have developed under relatively similar environmental conditions have thus accumulated different amounts of organic and mineral matter in biomass and detritus, mainly due to differences in major woody species characteristics. All ecosystems are a net atmosperic carbon sink, with a pooling rate of 1.81-4.43 t C ha -1 yr -1. The sink (NEP) is made up by C accumulation in stand biomass production, vegetation detritus, and soil humus and accounts for 46-76% of the total C allocated in annual increment; the main componentt is net C flux to biomass. The rate of N-min flux from soil pool to NPP is in fact in balance with that soil N-min accumulation in the arolla pine, larch, spruce, and birch plots. In addition, the ecosystems are characterized by a transitional cycling regime evident through non-balanced controlling organic and mineral matter stored in "plant-soil" system blocks.

Modelling forest regeneration processes in clear-cut and burned areas in Angara Region
: материалы временных коллективов / V. A. Sokolov, S. K. Farber, I. M. Danilin // Water, air & soil pollution. - 1995. - Vol. 82, № 1-2. - С. 155-160. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: A method to select measures for enhancing natural forest-regeneration process in areas under extensive management is discussed. Using available information on geomorphological site characteristics and stand parameters, indices are determined using a specific criterion that describes the forest regeneration process. Using these indices as model inputs, cleacuts and burns can be classified; within each stratum the natural forest regeneration proces is similar. Analysing these strata, one can select a regime of forest treatment that is appropriate for a given stratum and, consequently, for the clearcuts (or burns) it includes.

Regeneration after forest fires in mixed conifer broad-leaved forests of the Amur region in Far Eastern Russia: the relationship between species specific traits against fire and recent fire regimes
: материалы временных коллективов / M. Kobayashi, Y. P. Nemilostiv, O. A. Zyryanova et al // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 51-58. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The number of forest fires has been increasing in the mixed conifer broad-leaved forests in the southern part of Far Eastern Russia. We should analyze the effect of this new fire regime on the vegetation and carbon budget in the forest ecosystem of this region. As each woody species develops specific traits to adapt to certain fire regimes, a change of fire regime affects each species differently. This can result in the alteration of the species composition of forest ecosystems. In the present study, we rewieded those adaptive traits exhibited by species in the region, and hypothesized a possible mechsnism for the changes of species composition and amount of biomass stock that would result from the new fire regime. The new fire regime described were an increased frequency of both intense canopy fires and low intensity surface fires. Both kinds of increased fire result in an increase of Betula platyphylla forests, but with different mechanisms. We proposed that an increase of Betula platyphylla forests due to either mechanism results in a decrease of biomass density.

Intraspecific response of Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.) to pathogens in a provenance trial in Middle Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / N. A. Kuzmina, Sergey R. Kuz'min // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 11-2. - С. 51-59. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The results of assessing the resistance of 84 Scotch pine climatypes, growing in a provenance trial in a taiga zone of Middle Siberia, to pathogens of needle cast (Lophodermium pinastri Chev.), snow blight (Phacidium infestans Karst.), Cenangium diebak (Cenangium ferruginosum Fr.: Fr.) and rust (cronartium flaccidum (Alb. et Schw.) Wint and Peridermium pini (Pers.) Lew. et Kleb). The dynamics of the diseases caused by these pathogens are shown for 30-year period. The authors found that Scotch pine resistance to the pathogens in the provenance trial depended both on ecological regime of the growing site and on the genetic peculiarities of the climatypes determined by their site of origin. Differences in the resistance of the same Scotch pine climatypes to the pathogens showed itself when growing them on different ecological backgrounds (on sandy soil - the bear berry pine forest type, and on dark-grey forest soil - the tall-herb pine forest (type). Climatypes of "northern Lapponian" and "Siberian" pine subspecies are more tolerant to the pathogens.

Pyrogenic transformation -- taiga -- temperature -- moisture

Аннотация: Pyrogenic transformations of the physical state of cryogenic soils in the southern and middle taiga were investigated. The long-term dynamics of the microclimate on burns and the soil temperature and moisture to the depth of 120 cm were studied. Data on the postfire restoration of the ground cover are presented. Experiments on artificial sprinkling of burned areas differing in the degree of the burning out of the forest litter, the slope gradient, etc., have been performed. An experimental model demonstrating the relationships between the surface runoff and five environmental factors has been proposed. The pyrogenic destruction of the ground cover and the lower phytocenosis layers was accompanied by significant disturbances of the microclimate and anomalous thawing of the permafrost on the burns. In the pine stand on the colluvial fan after the intense fire, the soil temperature at the depth of 10 cm ( in the summer) exceeded the control value by 3-5 degrees C; in the larch forest on the southern slope of the Stanovoi Ridge, it increased by 1.5-2.0 times after the fire of medium intensity. On the mountain slopes, the surface runoff was significantly intensified, which resulted in drastic environmental and silvicultural consequences.

Аннотация: While the forest-tundra zone in Siberia, Russia has been dendroclimatologically well-studied in recent decades, much less emphasis has been given to a wide belt of northern taiga larch forests located to the south. In this study, climate and local site conditions are explored to trace their influence on radial growth of Gmelin larch (Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr.) trees developed on permafrost soils in the northern taiga. Three dendrochronological sites characterized by great differences in thermo-hydrological regime of soils were established along a short (ca. 100 m long) transect: on a river bank (RB), at riparian zone of a stream (RZ) and on a terrace (TER). Comparative analysis of the rate and year-to-year dynamics of tree radial growth among sites revealed considerable difference in both raw and standardized tree-ring width (TRW) chronologies obtained for the RZ site, characterized by shallow soil active layer depth and saturated soils. Results of dendroclimatic analysis indicated that tree-ring growth at all the sites is mostly defined by climatic conditions of a previous year and precipitation has stronger effect on TRW chronologies in comparison to the air temperatures. Remarkably, a great difference in the climatic response of TRW chronologies has been obtained for trees growing within a very short distance from each other. The positive relation of tree-ring growth with precipitation, and negative to temperature was observed in the dry site RB. In contrary, precipitation negatively and temperature positively influenced tree radial growth of larch at the water saturated RZ. Thus, a complicate response of northern Siberian larch forest productivity to the possible climate changes is expected due to great mosaic of site conditions and variability of environmental factors controlling tree-ring growth at different sites. Our study demonstrates the new possibilities for the future dendroclimatic research in the region, as various climatic parameters can be reconstructed from tree-ring chronologies obtained for different sites. variograms -- typological series -- water regime -- litter

Аннотация: A typological series of native Betula pubescens Ehrh. dendrocenoses along the channel of a river crossing a bog was studied. The variability of the mineral element reserves is described by geostatistical methods as the sum of a trend, autocorrelation, and random components. The contribution of deterministic and random components has been assessed in the years with average precipitation and in the year of 2007 with high and long-term flooding. The empirical variograms and the parameters of the model variograms are presented. The class of the spatial correlation of the ash reserves is described. A primary cause of the ash content's variability is the specific water regime, which is determined by the following: (i) the abundance and duration of the spring floods responsible for the silt mass brought by the river and (ii) the draining effect of the intrabog river, the distance from which provided the formation in the forest of the ground cover with the specific species composition and ash content. The falloff of the arboreal layer in the bog birch forests formed the fundamental mineral background of the litter.

Аннотация: Peculiarities of the dynamics and productivity of the pine forests growing under the conditions of the Transbaikalia arid climate are considered. Their high inflammability is noted. Fires sharpen the limiting role of moisture in tree growth. The post-fire annual ring fluctuations on longitudinal sections of young pines are illustrated. Outward diagnostic signs characterizing the xylogenesis state in trees damaged by fire have been analyzed: the char height on trunks, thermal damage to crowns, reduction and change in the tint of needle coloring. The process of digression dynamics of pyrogenic tree stands has been traced. Their reparation potential has been found to become weaker with ageing. As a result of the permanent effect of the pyrogenic factor, the productivity of pine forests in Transbaikalia is 1.5-2 times lower than of those in Priangarie.

Аннотация: Consideration is given to the results of studies on the postfire dynamics of Transbaikal forests, which are formed under conditions of highly arid climate and extreme pyrological regime. Data are presented on tree die-off and recruitment in naturally burned forests and in test stands affected by creeping fires differing in intensity. The hydrothermal regime of soils, precipitation runoff, and its multifactor models are discussed. It is shown that fires aggravate moisture deficiency on mountain slopes, impair the productivity of tree stands, and cause their digression. The statistics of forest fires and the risk of lightning fires are analyzed.

Аннотация: Comprehensive stratigraphic analyses of a standard peat profile laid on a large oligotrophic bog in the interfluve of Kas and Sym rivers, left tributaries of the Yenisei River, allowed reconstruction of local vegetation change and hydrological regime over a period of seven thousand years. The established three stages in vegetation succession in a local bog correspond to different degree of humidification. The development of bog ecosystem is found to be scarcely affected by regional climate. The process and rate of peat accumulation varied in different periods of the Holocene. The average rate of peat accumulation in the profile was 0.88 mm/year.

dendrochronology -- forest fires -- Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) -- Tuva -- Siberia -- Russia

Аннотация: Forest fires resulting from long periods of drought cause extensive forest ecosystem destruction and can impact on the carbon balance and air quality and feed back to the climate system, regionally and globally. Past fire frequency is reconstructed for Tuvan Scots pine stands using dendrochronology and statistics. Central Tuvan Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris) stands are subject to annual fire regimes; however high intensity fires are rare but they are responsible for most of the damage. Low, medium, and high severity fires have shaped the multi-story Scots pine communities, locally and regionally. Fire type and frequency are directly related to weather and climate and are also dependent on anthropogenic influences. The primary dry period, which promotes fire ignition and spread, in Tuva occurs in April and May. In some years, the precipitation deficit combined with high air temperatures induces long periods of drought. Unlike the typical surface fire regime, forest fires that burn during these extreme droughts often become crown fires that result in substantial forest damage and carbon release. The mean fire interval (MFI) is found to be 10.4 years in Balgazyn stands, and the landscape-scale MFI is 22.4 years. High severity, stand-replacing crown fires have a longer MFI. The warmer and dryer weather that is predicted by global climate models is evident in Tuva, and we believe that these changes in weather and climate have resulted in increased fire intensity and severity, rather than fire frequency in the Tuvan region.

Аннотация: Siberian Rivers account for a great part of water discharge into the Arctic Ocean. Along with the regional climate and the presence permafrost, hydrological processes occurring in catchments of the boreal taiga rivers are controlled by forest harvesting levels. Forests of the Lower Angara region have been harvested extensively over the past fifty years. As a result, forest area has been reduced and forest age structure and composition have changed. These changes are reflected in the natural water budget structure and hydrological regimes of areas. The study revealed that hydrological effects of forest logging conducted in Siberia characterized by a highly continental climate and, hence, severe forest growing conditions differ from those observed for the European Russia.
