Аннотация: Dwarf and typical trees of Pinus silvestris L. in Shirinskaya forest-steppe are compared on variability of vegetative and generative organs and quantitative and qualitative characteristics of fruiting. Special attention is paid to investigation of the correlation structure of characters in the compared samples. It has been determined that the dwarf pines are characterized by high variability of dimensional and qualitative characteristics. In spite of generally low reproductive potential of dwarf trees some species are distinguished by regular and abundant fruiting. They are characterized by higher correlation of characteristics and tendency to gonochorism. In spite of generally small contribution of dwarf species into the reproduction of pine population, it is quite consistent with the small area occupied by rocks within the studied territory. Some species are distinguished by higher reproductive potential and may be used to solve the problems of selection.

Аннотация: Polymorphism of 11 enzyme systems has been studied in dwarf Scots pine trees occurring on sand dunes and crags in two populations of southern Central Siberia. High genotypic variability of dwarfs and their similarity to normal trees in basic indices of genetic diversity have been revealed. Both populations, including normal and dwarf trees, are in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The sample of dwarf trees has proved to differ from the "norm" in showing an age-related trend toward decreased heterozygosity. The observed linkage disequilibrium at some pairs of loci can be explained by unequal contributions of trees to population reproduction or by a recent bottleneck event. The populations studied are similar to other Scots pine populations from the Asian part of the species range. Increased frequencies of some rare alleles in the populations from Tuva provide evidence for the probable presence of a glacial refugium for pine in this region.

Аннотация: Parameters of reproduction of the Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica), including radial and apical tree increments, the age structure of stands, the amount of young growth, and its distribution along an altitudinal gradient, have been studied in the forest-tundra ecotone of the Western Sayan. The results show that, over the past 30 years, P. sibirica undergrowth has expanded to the mountain tundra belt, the apical and radial tree increments and stand density have increased, and the life form of many P. sibirica plants has changed from prostrate to erect (single-or multistemmed). These changes correlate with the dynamics of summer temperatures and monthly (in May and June) and annual precipitation. The rise of summer temperatures by 1 degrees C promotes the expansion of P. sibirica undergrowth for approximately 150 m up the altitudinal gradient.

Аннотация: A model of the population dynamics of insects has been developed, which takes into account the food consumption by insects and the reaction of food plants to the damage. Equations have been derived that describe the relationship between the coefficient of insect reproduction, the weight of females, the energetic effectiveness of the food consumption by insects, and the reaction of food plants. The scenarios of population outbreaks have been analyzed as a function of the weight of females in the stable state. The results of modeling have been compared with the data of natural observations.

Аннотация: The light-colored brown adipose tissue with the lowered thermogenic activity more frequently occurred in pregnant females than in non-reproductive females. The mass of brown fat congestions increased even at early pregnancy. The percentage of dry residue in the tissue positively correlated with the fetal size at the first half of pregnancy. At the late stage of pregnancy, it negatively correlated with the size and number of feta.

Аннотация: A quantum-chemical study has been made of the interactions of pheromones of some lepidopteran forest pests (Siberian moth Dendrolimus superans sibiricus Tschetv and gypsy moth Limantria dispar L.) with components of the ambient air, as well as the effect of electromagnetic radiation on the pheromones. It is found that the reactions of pheromones with substances contained in the forest air are irreversible and proceed with liberation of heat. Electromagnetic radiation quite strongly affects the structure of pheromones, whereby the pheromone molecule is activated and can readily enter into reactions. В© 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The development of male generative organs of the Siberian stone pine clones of different origin was analyzed in the Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe for many years. Geographical and individual variability was described as concerns the number of microstrobils and pollen variability. The beginning of "flowering", abundance of microstrobils, and their regular formation were shown to markedly vary and, all other conditions being equal, be determined by the presence of clones, their hereditary features, and environmental conditions, as well by the influence of stock.

Аннотация: A game theory model of insect population dynamics is proposed. In the simplest case-when a population can be in one of two states, in one of which the physiological processes in an individual are aimed at enhancing the growth and reproduction, and in the other the physiological processes are aimed at activating defense reactions of an individual-outbreaks of insect propagation occur when both the population and the habitat have a certain kind of memory, specifically, when the current states of the population and the habitat depend on their states at the preceding moment of time. Аннотация: Siberian forest occupy a significant part of the Asian continent. Their role as an essential component of the Earth's surface, biomass and oxygen producer is increasing annually. Expanded reproduction of taiga forests necessitated by the intensive development of Siberian productive forces, results in an evergrowing need of forest productivity constancy and increase. Proper forest exploitation is a crucial part of the solution of such important problems as the rational use of land and water resources, stable crop yields, and the creation of favourable conditions for human life. To solve these important economic problems, the Siberian branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences has devised a long-term programme of ecological monitoring of Siberian forest resources using aerospace techniques. The programme provides for the establishment and improvement of ecogeographical and physicotechnological principles of the remote sensing of forest and the development of fundamental forest-biological research based on new methodologies, the results of which are used to solve urgent forestry and nature protection problems. The research is carried out in the following major directions: studying spectral characteristics of forest vegetation for forest-state indication; thematic mapping of taiga territories; assessing biological productivity of natural complexes; environmental state monitoring; fire protection of forest; pest and disease control; developing instruments and methods for automatized aerospace data processing for real-time use. We consider forest-state monitoring to be one of the crucial tools in providing the optimum use of forest ecosystems for resource and ecological functions.

Аннотация: The introduction of Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH), requires companies to register and risk assess all substances produced or imported in volumes of >1 tonne per year. Extrapolation methods which use existing data for estimating the effects of chemicals are attractive to industry, and comparative data are therefore increasingly in demand. Data on natural toxic chemicals could be used for extrapolation methods such as read-across. To test this hypothesis, the toxicity of natural chemicals and their synthetic analogues were compared using standardised toxicity tests. Two chemical pairs: the napthoquinones, juglone (natural) and 1,4-naphthoquinone (synthetic); and anthraquinones, emodin (natural) and quinizarin (synthetic) were chosen, and their comparative effects on the survival and reproduction of collembolans, earthworms, enchytraeids and predatory mites were assessed. Differences in sensitivity between the species were observed with the predatory mite (Hypoaspis aculeifer) showing the least sensitivity. Within the chemical pairs, toxicity to lethal and sub-lethal endpoints was very similar for the four invertebrate species. The exception was earthworm reproduction, which showed differential sensitivity to the chemicals in both naphthoquinone and anthraquinone pairs. Differences in toxicity identified in the present study may be related to degree of exposure and/or subtle differences in the mode of toxic action for the chemicals and species tested. It may be possible to predict differences by identifying functional groups which infer increased or decreased toxicity in one or other chemical. The development of such techniques would enable the use of read-across from natural to synthetic chemicals for a wider group of compounds. В© 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Temperature-induced recruitment pulses of Arctic dwarf shrub communities

Аннотация: Summary: The effects of climate change on Arctic ecosystems can range between various spatiotemporal scales and may include shifts in population distribution, community composition, plant phenology, primary productivity and species biodiversity. The growth rates and age structure of tundra vegetation as well as its response to temperature variation, however, remain poorly understood because high-resolution data are limited in space and time. Anatomical and morphological stem characteristics were recorded to assess the growth behaviour and age structure of 871 dwarf shrubs from 10 species at 30 sites in coastal East Greenland at 70°N. Recruitment pulses were linked with changes in mean annual and summer temperature back to the 19th century, and a literature review was conducted to place our findings in a pan-Arctic context. Low cambial activity translates into estimated average/maximum plant ages of 59/204 years, suggesting relatively small turnover rates and stable community composition. Decade-long changes in the recruitment intensity were found to lag temperature variability by 2 and 6 years during warmer and colder periods, respectively (r = 0.851961-2000 and 1881-1920). Synthesis. Our results reveal a strong temperature dependency of Arctic dwarf shrub reproduction, a high vulnerability of circumpolar tundra ecosystems to climatic changes, and the ability of evaluating historical vegetation dynamics well beyond the northern treeline. The combined wood anatomical and plant ecological approach, considering insights from micro-sections to community assemblages, indicates that model predictions of rapid tundra expansion (i.e. shrub growth) following intense warming might underestimate plant longevity and persistence but overestimate the sensitivity and reaction time of Arctic vegetation. Our results reveal a strong temperature dependency of Arctic dwarf shrub reproduction, a high vulnerability of circumpolar tundra ecosystems to climatic changes, and the ability of evaluating historical vegetation dynamics well beyond the northern treeline. Аннотация: While phylogeographic patterns of organisms are often interpreted through past environmental disturbances, mediated by climate changes, and geographic barriers, they may also be strongly influenced by species-specific traits. To investigate the impact of such traits, we focused on two Eurasian spruce bark beetles that share a similar geographic distribution, but differ in their ecology and reproduction. Ips typographus is an aggressive tree-killing species characterized by strong dispersal, whereas Dendroctonus micans is a discrete inbreeding species (sib mating is the rule), parasite of living trees and a poor disperser. We compared genetic variation between the two species over both beetles' entire range in Eurasia with five independent gene fragments, to evaluate whether their intrinsic differences could have an influence over their phylogeographic patterns. We highlighted widely divergent patterns of genetic variation for the two species and argue that the difference is indeed largely compatible with their contrasting dispersal strategies and modes of reproduction. In addition, genetic structure in I.typographus divides European populations in a northern and a southern group, as was previously observed for its host plant, and suggests past allopatric divergence. A long divergence time was estimated between East Asian and other populations of both species, indicating their long-standing presence in Eurasia, prior to the last glacial maximum. Finally, the strong population structure observed in D. micans for the mitochondrial locus provides insights into the recent colonization history of this species, from its native European range to regions where it was recently introduced.

    From east to west across the Palearctic: Phylogeography of the invasive lime leaf miner Phyllonorycter issikii (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) and discovery of a putative new cryptic species in East Asia

Аннотация: Knowing the phylogeographic structure of invasive species is important for understanding the underlying processes of invasion. The micromoth Phyllonorycter issikii, whose larvae damage leaves of lime trees Tilia spp., was only known from East Asia. In the last three decades, it has been recorded in most of Europe, Western Russia and Siberia. We used the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene region to compare the genetic variability of P. issikii populations between these different regions. Additionally, we sequenced two nuclear genes (28S rRNA and Histone 3) and run morphometric analysis of male genitalia to probe for the existence of cryptic species. The analysis of COI data of 377 insect specimens collected in 16 countries across the Palearctic revealed the presence of two different lineages: P. issikii and a putative new cryptic Phyllonorycter species distributed in the Russian Far East and Japan. In P. issikii, we identified 31 haplotypes among which 23 were detected in the invaded area (Europe) and 10 were found in its putative native range in East Asia (Russian Far East, Japan, South Korea and China), with only two common haplotypes. The high number of haplotypes found in the invaded area suggest a possible scenario of multiple introductions. One haplotype H1 was dominant (119 individuals, 67.2%), not only throughout its expanding range in Europe and Siberia but, intriguingly, also in 96% of individuals originating from Japan. We detected eight unique haplotypes of P. issikii in East Asia. Five of them were exclusively found in the Russian Far East representing 95% of individuals from that area. The putative new cryptic Phyllonorycter species showed differences from P. issikii for the three studied genes. However, both species are morphologically undistinguishable. They occur in sympatry on the same host plants in Japan (Sendai) and the Russian Far East (Primorsky krai) without evidence of admixture. © 2017 Kirichenko et al. Аннотация: A model that implies highly inertial regulation of phytophage numbers by entomophages has been applied for the analysis of phytophage–entomophage interactions during different phases of the gradation cycle of phyllophagous insects. The data on population dynamics and the degree of parasite infestation in pupae of the pine looper Bupalus piniarius L. and fir looper Ectropis (=Boarmia) bistortata Gz are used to verify the model. The results of field studies apparently are in good agreement with the model of highly inertial regulation in the “phytophage–entomophage” system. The model that is proposed explains the decisive roles of different factors (entomophages, predators, or diseases) in the population dynamics of phytophages under different conditions. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

    Биологические особенности плодовых древесных и древовидных растений тропической зоны

Аннотация: Сделан обзор основных плодовых древесных и древовидных растений тропической зоны. Дана их характеристика, рассмотрены биологические особенности, приведены данные о местах их происхождения, о регионах, где они культивируются. Представлена информация о результатах кариологических исследований этих видов, использовании методов молекулярной цитогенетики, сравнительной геномики и транскриптомики для некоторых из них. В тропических странах выращиваются такие культуры, как манго индийское - один из самых вкусных и популярных фруктов, хлебное дерево, индийское хлебное дерево (джекфрут), дынное дерево (папайя), сырное дерево (моринда цитрусолистная), томатное дерево (тамарилло), огуречное дерево (билимби), широко употребляемые в пищу. Приведена информация по таким интересным плодовым растениям, как дуриан, мангостин, питахайя, лонган, личи, рамбутан, пулазан, канистель, аки и др. Проведен обзор видов плодовых растений родов Annona , Psidium, Syzygium, Averrhoa, Ziziphus, Passiflora. Огромное значение в плодоводстве тропиков и субтропиков имеют разные виды цитрусовых и сорта бананов. Установлено, что среди тропических плодовых древесных и древовидных растений имеются ди-, три- и тетраплоиды, в кариотипах некоторых видов встречаются В-хромосомы. Многие тропические плодовые являются полиплоидными (манго, хлебное дерево, джекфрут, виды родов Psidium, Syzygium и Ziziphus ). Некоторые виды, возможно, древние полиплоиды, об этом свидетельствуют результаты секвенирования их геномов. У ряда тропических плодовых древесных растений наблюдаются явления каули- и рамифлории (джекфрут, чемпедак, папайя, дуриан), когда цветы и затем плоды образуются на стволе и крупных ветвях. Содержание лигнина, крахмала, конденсированных дубильных веществ (проантоцианидинов) во флоэме определено в начале опыта (0 сут), через 7 и 14 сут. Mycelium of the ophiostomoid fungus Ceratocystis laricicola Redfern & Minter, its extractive and protein fraction obtained from the extractive were used as a fungal inductor. The content of lignin, starch, condensed tannins (proanthocyanidins) in the phloem was determined at the beginning of the experiment (0 days), after 7 and 14 days. Аннотация: Conifer decline (Abies sibirica Ledeb. stands) as a result of complex biotic effects on the territory of Krasnoyarsk krai by 2018 reached an area of 541 400 ha; the potential area of further death of A. sibirica is up to 10 million ha. The main reason is the phytopathogenic fungi Armillaria mellea s.l. and Heterobasidion annosum s.l. combined with bark beetle Polygraphus proximus. Trees affected by root pathogens are centers of forest dieback, from which pathological outbreaks spread, including the effects of P. proximus and its phytopathogenic mycoassociates. Neonectria fuckeliana (C. Booth) Castl & Rossman is among the concomitant pathogens in the scale of the lesion, which causes a resin flow that is similar to the effects of P. proximus attack. The phytopathogenicity of pure cultures of the dominant root pathogens of Armillaria borealis Marxm. & Korhonen and Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref., as well as the stem pathogen of N. fuckeliana, has been confirmed by a series of experiments in vitro. Promising natural agents for the regulation of P. proximus abundance are highly virulent aboriginal strains of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.-Criv.) Vuill., resulting in maximum insect death (up to 100%) for 7-11 days and retaining activity in the temperature range of 16-24 +/- 1 degrees C.
