Intraspecific response of Scots pine (Pinus silvestris L.) to pathogens in a provenance trial in Middle Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / N. A. Kuzmina, Sergey R. Kuz'min // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2008. - Vol. 11-2. - С. 51-59. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: The results of assessing the resistance of 84 Scotch pine climatypes, growing in a provenance trial in a taiga zone of Middle Siberia, to pathogens of needle cast (Lophodermium pinastri Chev.), snow blight (Phacidium infestans Karst.), Cenangium diebak (Cenangium ferruginosum Fr.: Fr.) and rust (cronartium flaccidum (Alb. et Schw.) Wint and Peridermium pini (Pers.) Lew. et Kleb). The dynamics of the diseases caused by these pathogens are shown for 30-year period. The authors found that Scotch pine resistance to the pathogens in the provenance trial depended both on ecological regime of the growing site and on the genetic peculiarities of the climatypes determined by their site of origin. Differences in the resistance of the same Scotch pine climatypes to the pathogens showed itself when growing them on different ecological backgrounds (on sandy soil - the bear berry pine forest type, and on dark-grey forest soil - the tall-herb pine forest (type). Climatypes of "northern Lapponian" and "Siberian" pine subspecies are more tolerant to the pathogens.

The potential impact of CO2 and air temperature increases on krummholz transformation into arborescent form in the southern Siberian Mountains
: материалы временных коллективов / V. I. Kharuk, M. Dvinskaya, S.T. Im, K. Ranson // Arctic, Antarctic and Alpine Research. - 2011. - Vol. 43, № 4. - С. 593-600. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Trees in the southern Siberian Mountains forest-tundra ecotone have considerably increased their radial and apical growth increments during the last few decades. This leads to the widespread vertical transformation of mat and prostrate krummholz forms of larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb) and Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour). An analysis of the radial growth increments showed that these transformations began in the mid-1980s. Larch showed a greater resistance to the harsh alpine environment and attained a vertical growth form in areas where Siberian pine is still krummholz and etc.

climate warming -- bioclimatic models -- major conifer ranges -- Central Siberia

Аннотация: Regional studies have shown that winters warmed 2-3 degrees C while summers warmed 1-2 degrees C during the1960-2010 period in central Siberia. Increased warming predicted from general circulation models (GCMs) by the end of the century is expected to impact Siberian vegetation. Our goal is to evaluate the consequences of climate warming on vegetation, forests, and forest-forming tree species in central Siberia. We use our envelope-type bioclimatic models of the Siberian forests and major tree conifer species based on three climatic indices which characterise their warmth and moisture requirements and cold resistance, and on one soil factor that charactrises their tolerance to permafrost. Coupling our bioclimatic models with the climatic indices and the permafrost distributions, we predict the potential habitats of forests and forest-forming tree species in current climate conditions and also in the 2080 projected climate. In the 2080 drier climate conditions, Siberian forests are simulated to decrease significantly and shift northwards while forest-steppe and steppe would come to dominate 50 % of central Siberia. Permafrost is not predicted to thaw deep enough to sustain dark (Pinus sibirica, Abies sibirica, and Picea obovata) taiga. Dahurian larch (L. gmelinii+cajanderi), which is able to withstand permafrost, would remain the dominant tree species. Light conifers (Larix spp. and Pinus sylvestris) may gain an advantage over dark conifers in a predicted dry climate due to their resistance to water stress and wildfire. Habitats for new temperate broadleaf forests, non-existent in Siberia at present, are predicted by 2080.

Defense response of pine stem phloem to wounding and treatment with mycelial extracts from Ceratocystis laricicola

Аннотация: Ophiostomatoid fungi colonize the conducting tissues of conifer stems, the phloem and the xylem. These pathogenic fungi penetrate into the stem through injuries made by xylophagous insects vectoring these pathogens. In this study the response of the phloem of Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) to wounding (treatment 1) was compared with the response to wounding combined with application of high-molecular-weight compounds isolated from the mycelium of the ophiostomatoid fungus Ceratocystis laricicola Redfern & Minter (treatment 2). Both treatments induced the appearance of necrosis in the inner bark, the formation of periderm separating living and dead tissues, and formation of the callus alongside the wound perimeter. In addition, the bark accumulated lignin, bound proanthocyanidins, and resins, with a parallel decrease in the content of free proanthocyanidins, low-molecular-weight carbohydrates, and non-lignin components of the cell wall (P > 0.95). The size of necrotic spots, as well as changes in the content of most substances, were significantly higher in the treatment 2 than in the treatment 1 (P > 0.95). The accumulation of lignin in cell walls of phloem sieve cells was delayed in the treatment 2 as compared with that in the treatment 1. This suggested that the mycelial extract temporarily inhibited lignification at the early stage of the wound response. This disturbance of the cell wall protective transformation led to the hypothesis that the fungal suppressors retard the repair of inner bark injured by insects, thereby favoring the invasion of conifer tissues by ophiostomatoid fungi.

permafrost zone forests -- larch -- pyrophytic properties -- life strategies

Аннотация: The pyrophytic properties of the larch Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. growing in the northern taiga of central Siberia have been studied. It has been found that, although the trees are highly combustible and fire resistance of tree stands is low, the species is highly pyrophytic, which allows it to retain its geographic range. At early stages of postfire successions, the larch exhibits characteristics of pyrogenic explerent and is subject to r-selection. When forest restoration is close to completion, the species passes into the patient state and acquires properties subject to K-selection.

Аннотация: Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) callus culture was treated with the mycelium extracts from six Fusarium strains. Previously, pine seedlings were infected with a spore suspension in order to test the pathogenicity of the used strains. Callus culture infection resulted in a decrease in the free proanthocyanidin (PA) and an increase in bound PA content. After treating the calli with all strains except F. oxysporum var. orthoceras, the lignin content became lower than the control one. The most considerable changes involved the p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) content, and its greatest change was observed after treating the calli with F. nivale, when the HBA concentration (1229 mug/g, dry wt) exceeded fourfold the control one. There was a positive correlation (R = 0.81) between the HBA content in the callus culture cells treated with a fungal extract and the virulence of Fusarium strains. At the same time, there was an inverse correlation (R = -0.80) between the lignin content in a callus culture and the fungal virulence; the latter did not affect the contents of both free and bound PA.

Аннотация: Callus cultures of Siberian larch (Lar ix sibirica Ledeb.) and Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.) were used to demonstrate the elicitor activity of two ophiostomatoid fungal species, Ceratocystis laricicola and Ceratocystis polonica, as the pioneer settlers on larch and spruce, respectively. The extract from C. laricicola mycelium stimulated the accumulation of lignin in larch cells by 37% and that of hound proanthocyanidins by 25%. In spruce callus cultures, C. laricicola and C. polonica increased the bound PA content by 25 and 46%, respectively. In the callus cultures of larch and spruce, the addition of extract of C. laricicola increased the concentration of p-hydroxybenzoic acid 13-fold and nearly 4-fold, respectively. The metabolic characteristics of accumulation of phenolic compounds in conifer cells are discussed.

Аннотация: Microbial respiration and biomass were evaluated in soils of the Ermak Tree Nursery and Pogorel'skii Forest under different coniferous species. The degree of disturbance of each biocenosis was determined from the metabolic coefficient (qCO(2)). The microbial investigation demonstrated a lower resistance to ecological factors of the tree nursery biocenosis as compared to those of the Pogorel'skii Forest.

Аннотация: Effect of defoliation on resistance response of Siberian fir, Abies sibirica Ledeb., to fungal inoculation was investigated within three even-aged fir stands damaged by Siberian moth, Dendrolimus superans sibiricus Tschetw., and located in the Krasnoyarsk Territory (Central Siberia). Histological changes in tissues, accompanying the resistance response were examined in 30 fir trees (90-130 years old) of different defoliation degree (50, 75, 100 %) six weeks after single inoculation with Leptographium sp, vectored by Monochamus urussovi Fisch. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). It was recorded that the rate and intensity of defence response of phloem and xylem tissues to inoculation as well as percent of trees infested by the insect-vector differed significantly in dependence of defoliation degree. Trees of 50 percent defoliation significantly differed from trees of more severe defoliation in all parameters of defence response and percentage of colonisation by the beetle. The trees defoliated to 75 and 100% did not differ significantly in defence response activity and the number of the trees attacked by M. urussovi Strong difference in resistance to inoculation and colonisation by the beetle was recorded between trees defoliated in the current year and in the previous year. All infested by M, urussovi trees were characterised by the epidemic level of frequency of blue-stain fungi associated with this insect. The tendency was recorded to a decreased frequency of the pathogenic Ophiostoma sp. and a more frequent occurrence of the saprophyte O. curvicollis in trees defoliated in previous year which lost ability to defend against wounding and fungal infection.

Аннотация: A computer system for evaluating current forest state and predicting stand resistance to strong wind was tested in a case study of pine stands in the southern part of Central Siberia disturbed by a hurricane in 1994. The use of a local geographical information system (GIS) enabled determination of a combination of natural and human factors that increase the risk of windthrow. The factors were analyzed at three levels: landscape, stand, and single toe. Specific site conditions and human-caused disturbances of the natural vegetation community structure were found to be the major factors accounting for decreasing stand resistance to wind.     VARIATION AMONG AND WITHIN MOUNTAIN BIRCH TREES IN FOLIAGE PHENOLS, CARBOHYDRATES, AND AMINO-ACIDS, AND IN GROWTH OF EPIRRITA-AUTUMNATA LARVAE

Аннотация: Leaf quality of the mountain birch (Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa) for herbivores was studied at several hierarchical levels: among trees, among ramets within trees, among branches within ramets, and among short shoots within branches. The experimental units at each level were chosen randomly. The indices of leaf quality were the growth rate of the larvae of a geometrid, Epirrita autumnata, and certain biochemical traits of the leaves (total phenolics and individual phenolic compounds, total carbohydrates and individual sugars, free and protein-bound amino acids). We also discuss relationships between larval growth rate and biochemical foliage traits. Larval growth rates during two successive years correlated positively at the level of tree, the ramet, and the branch, indicating that the relationships in leaf quality remained constant between seasons both among and within trees. The distribution of variation at different hierarchical levels depended on the trait in question. In the case of larval growth rate, ramets and short shoots accounted for most of the explained variation. In the case of biochemical compounds, trees accounted for most of the variance in the content of total phenolics and individual low-molecular-weight phenolics. In the content of carbohydrates (total carbohydrates, starch, fructose, glucose, and sucrose) and amino acids, variation among branches was generally larger than variation among trees. Variation among ramets was low for most compounds. No single leaf trait played a paramount role in larval growth. Secondary compounds, represented by phenolic compounds, or primary metabolites, particularly sugars, may both be important in determining the suitability of birch leaves for larvae. If phenols are causally more important, genet-specific analyses of foliage chemistry are needed. If sugars are of primary importance, within-genet sampling and analysis of foliage chemistry are necessary.

Аннотация: A model for predicting the spatial distribution of the major vegetation zones in Siberia is developed from bioclimatological considerations. Driving variables are growing degree-days (5 degrees C base), Budyko's dryness index, and Conrad's continentality index. Because these indices reflect the underlying climatic factors determining plants' requirements for warmth, drought resistance, and cold tolerance, they define the main features of vegetation zonation. Climatic inputs (monthly mean temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure, cloudiness, and albedo) are obtained from a global climatic database, supplemented by additional weather stations in Siberia; resolution is 0.5 degrees longitude by 0.5 degrees latitude. The performance of the model is examined by comparing our Siberian vegetation predictions with the landscape map of the USSR by Isachenko, a map that was not used for model development. The patterns of vegetation predicted by the Siberian vegetation model generally match well with the vegetation patterns on Isachenko's map. The general locations of all vegetation zones are predicted correctly. This visual impression is also borne out statistically, with K-statistics for judging agreement between the maps showing good agreement (0.55 kappa 0.7) at all scales of comparison (from 0.5 degrees by 0.5 degrees pixels to 5 degrees by 5 degrees blocks of pixels). The model is also useful for estimating the change in equilibrium conditions due to hypothesized events such as CO2-induced global warming, for retrospective comparisons using the paleorecord, and for carbon budget assessment.

Аннотация: Investigating the tolerance of plant reproductive systems to environmental changes has become a research priority under current climate change scenarios. Successful plant conservation requires knowledge of plant reproductive biology, particularly the meiotic characteristics of planted species. Meiosis, as part of microsporogenesis, is a critical plant developmental stage controlling future pollen quality. Meiosis in a Siberian fir (Abies sibirica) plantation, established in the Forest Arboretum of the Sukachev Institute, Russia, was studied from 2002 to 2004. The microsporogenesis pattern found for the Siberian fir appeared to be largely similar to that exhibited by other conifer species. Meiosis in the Siberian fir has the following characteristics: asynchrony, rapid progression of telophases I and II, and parallel and linear spindle arrangements at different meiosis II stages. General and specific meiosis irregularities were recorded at each stage. Some specific features of meiosis and the specific development of some irregularities were revealed. Pollen development analysis showed that irregular pollen grains made up less than 1% of all grains. The specific features of meiosis identified in fir trees growing in the Arboretum indicated low resistance of male reproductive structures to climatic changes and might account for high fir pollen sterility in this new environment. Аннотация: The causes and resulting spatial patterns of Siberian pine mortality in eastern Kuznetzky Alatau Mountains, Siberia were analyzed based on satellite (Landsat, MODIS) and dendrochronology data. Climate variables studied included temperature, precipitation and Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) drought index. Landsat data analysis showed that stand mortality was first detected in the year 2006 at an elevation of 650m, and extended up to 900m by the year 2012. Mortality was accompanied by a decrease in MODIS-derived vegetation index (EVI). The area of dead stands and the upper mortality line were correlated with increased drought. The uphill margin of mortality was limited by elevational precipitation gradients. Dead stands (i.e., >75% tree mortality) were located mainly on southern slopes. With respect to slope, mortality was observed within a 7-20В° range with greatest mortality occurring on convex terrain. Tree radial increment measurements correlate and were synchronous with SPEI (r2=0.37, rs=80). The results also showed the primary role of drought stress on Siberian pine mortality. A secondary role may be played by bark beetles and root fungi attacks. The observed Siberian pine mortality is part of a broader phenomenon of "dark needle conifers" (DNC, i.e., Siberian pine, fir and spruce) decline and mortality in European Russia, Siberia, and the Russian Far East. All locations of DNC decline coincided with areas of observed drought increase. The results obtained are one of the first observations of drought-induced decline and mortality of DNC at the southern border of boreal forests. Meanwhile if model projections of increased aridity are correct DNC within the southern part of its areal may be replaced by drought-resistant Pinus silvestris and Larix sibirica.     Evaluation of micrometeoroid substance effect on artificial space objects
/ A. B. Lobanov, E. A. Pavlichenko // Cosmic Research. - 1998. - Vol. 36, Is. 5. - P501-506 . - ISSN 0010-9525

Аннотация: The most important features of the attack of one of the hazardous space factors, a micrometeoroid substance, on artificial space objects are evaluated. It is shown that the danger of through piercing of spacecraft body at collision with a micrometeoroid is absent under natural operation conditions. However, the possibility of initiating electrical breakdown of high-voltage equipment in the open space is of principal significance, and the rate of spacecraft collision with micrometeoroids is estimated under these conditions. The estimate of erosion of thermo-regulating coating (TRC) materials does not exceed 4.5% for 10 years of spacecraft lifetime and allows one to conclude that all applied TRCs retain their operational performances under the micrometeoroid effect and possess high resistance under natural operation conditions. It should be noted here that the coatings of solar batteries and high-sensitivity optical devices are liable to the greatest danger. As a result, the solar batteries become less efficient. Аннотация: The study of damage to tree stands and of levels of mineral substances and essential oil in needles attests to the resistance of Krasnoyarsk suburban pine forests to emissions. The chemical composition of mineral and organic compounds can be used as an indicator of the state of pine phytocenoses. В© 1996 MAHK Hayka/Interperiodica Publishing.

ROLE OF PROANTHOCYANIDINS AND LIGNIN IN THE DEFENSE RESPONSE OF SIBERIAN FIR TO INOCULATION WITH MICROMYCETES
[Text] / G. G. POLYAKOVA [et al.] // Russ. J. Plant Physiol. - 1995. - Vol. 42, Is. 4. - P552-557. - Cited References: 21 . - 6. - ISSN 1021-4437

Аннотация: The rate of accumulation and location of proanthocyanidins and lignin was studied in fir (Abies sibirica Ledeb.) trunk phloem inoculated with two species of pathogenic micromycetes Verticillium sp. and Thysanophora sp., the usual associates of the sawyer Monochamus urussovi Fisch. Greater accumulation of the phenolic substances and more rapid localization of pathogen as a result of a hypersensitivity reaction were detected in firs infected with Verticillium sp. It was concluded that accumulation of proanthocyanidins and lignin is a part of nonspecific immune response of fir to the pathogen action and that the pathogen specific of fir can inhibit induced synthesis of defensive substances by the host plant.
