Аннотация: We measured annual ring with of larch trees growing on the contrasing north-and south-facing slopes. Moreover, we also examined wood anatomy of stems of larch seedlings raised under high CO2 in phytotron for two years. Based on these results, we can predict the effect of greenhouse condition on the annual ring formation of larch species.

Nitrogen dynamics in leaves of deciduous broad-leaved tree seedlings grown in summer green forests in Northern Japan
: материалы временных коллективов / K. Takayoshi, K. Satoshi, O. V. Masyagina // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2007. - Vol. 10-1. - С. 115-119. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Dynamics of nitrogen in leaves of trees and seedlings of deciduous broad-leaf species were studied for improving forest management. The photosynthetic traits of canopy leaves of diciduous broad-leaved trees were measured using a canopy tower. There was a clear positive correlation between leaf nitrogen content and light saturated photosynthetic rate at sunny canopy. As reflecting the shoot development pattern, leaf senescence began from the inner part of the crown in early successional species, by contrast leaf senescence process commences from either the outer or top portion of the crown in late successional species. For regenerated seedlings in forest floor, seasonal change in the allocation pattern of leaf nitrogen coincided with the changing of light conditions through the leaf phenology of upper canopy. In light limited condition, nitrogen was allocated to chlorophyll while it allocated to more to photosynthetic carbon fixation, i.e. Rubisco in strong light condition. Nitrogen allocated was affected more by light to CO2 condition that was found in birch and beech seedlings with a FACE system.

Mixed-power scaling of whole-plant respiration from seedlings to giant trees

Аннотация: The scaling of respiratory metabolism with body mass is one of the most pervasive phenomena in biology. Using a single allometric equation to characterize empirical scaling relationships and to evaluate alternative hypotheses about mechanisms has been controversial. We developed a method to directly measure respiration of 271 whole plants, spanning nine orders of magnitude in body mass, from small seedlings to large trees, and from tropical to boreal ecosystems. Our measurements include the roots, which have often been ignored. Rather than a single power-law relationship, our data are fit by a biphasic, mixed-power function. The allometric exponent varies continuously from 1 in the smallest plants to 3/4 in larger saplings and trees. Therefore, our findings support the recent findings of Reich et al. [Reich PB, Tjoelker MG, Machado JL, Oleksyn J (2006) Universal scaling of respiratory metabolism, size, and nitrogen in plants. Nature 439: 457-461] and West, Brown, and Enquist [West GB, Brown JH, Enquist BJ (1997) A general model for the origin of allometric scaling laws in biology. Science 276: 122 - 126.]. The transition from linear to 3/4-power scaling may indicate fundamental physical and physiological constraints on the allocation of plant biomass between photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic organs over the course of ontogenetic plant growth.

Аннотация: The introduction of Trichoderma viride spores (10(8) CFU per 1 cm(2)) essentially changed the structure of micromycetes in the soils of tree nurseries in Krasnoyarsk region. During the first 20 days, in the variants with dark gray forest soils and podzolized chernozems, the total number of fungi decreased by 3-4 and 1.5 times, respectively, as compared to that in the control plots. During the intense development of the introduced microbes, the species composition of the soil fungi changed considerably. The treatment of Scots pine seeds with metabolites of Trichoderma fungi, as well as Pseudomonas and Bacillus bacteria, in the form of water suspensions, biopreparations, and dry spores promoted an increase in the yield of seedlings and improve their morphometric parameters. At the end of the growing period, the treatment with Trichoderma and the biopreparation on its basis increased these parameters, on average, by 18-70%, and the treatment with bacteria increased the same parameters by 13-15%. The application of microbial preparations improved the phytosanitary state of the soils in the studied tree nurseries. The use of the strains of indigenous microorganisms might be feasible for solving bioremediation problems more successfully in particular regions.

Аннотация: Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) callus culture was treated with the mycelium extracts from six Fusarium strains. Previously, pine seedlings were infected with a spore suspension in order to test the pathogenicity of the used strains. Callus culture infection resulted in a decrease in the free proanthocyanidin (PA) and an increase in bound PA content. After treating the calli with all strains except F. oxysporum var. orthoceras, the lignin content became lower than the control one. The most considerable changes involved the p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA) content, and its greatest change was observed after treating the calli with F. nivale, when the HBA concentration (1229 mug/g, dry wt) exceeded fourfold the control one. There was a positive correlation (R = 0.81) between the HBA content in the callus culture cells treated with a fungal extract and the virulence of Fusarium strains. At the same time, there was an inverse correlation (R = -0.80) between the lignin content in a callus culture and the fungal virulence; the latter did not affect the contents of both free and bound PA.

Аннотация: Twelve-day-old seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were infected with a virulent spore suspension of the fungus Fusarium sporotrichiella var. sporotrichioides Bilai. 72 h after infection, the seedlings were divided into infection-susceptible and infection-resistant ones, and phenolic compounds in the seedling hypocotyls were analyzed. Susceptible seedlings contained 4.3-fold less lignins, 1.4-fold less free and bound proanthocyanidins, 12.7-fold less free hydroxybenzoic acids, 56.6-fold less bound hydroxybenzoic acids, 2-fold less quinic acid, and 5.1-fold less shikimic acid as compared to the resistant seedlings. At the same time, L-phenylalanine content was increased 3-fold and that of L-tyrosine, 1.3-fold. The activity of quinate:NAD(P)(+) oxidoreductase and L-phenylalanine ammonia-lyase in the hypocotyls of susceptible seedlings was 2.3-fold and 1.4-fold lower, respectively, whereas the activity of shikimate:NAD(P)(+) oxidoreductase remained unchanged.

Growth and annual ring structure of Larix sibirica grown at different carbon dioxide concentrations and nutrient supply rates

Аннотация: We compared effects of ambient (360 vpm) and elevated (720 vpm) carbon dioxide concentration ([CO(2)]) and high and low nutrient supply rates on stem growth, annual ring structure and tracheid anatomy of Siberian larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) seedlings over two growing seasons. Elevated [CO(2)] had no significant effect on either stem height or diameter growth; however, both stem height and diameter growth were enhanced by the high nutrient supply rate, and these increases were stimulated by elevated [CO(2)]. Elevated [CO(2)] tended to increase the width of the annual xylem ring, the number of cells in a radial file spanning the ring, and tracheid lumen diameter, whereas it tended to reduce cell wall thickness, although there were no statistically significant CO(2) effects on tracheid anatomy. Changes in tracheid cell morphology seemed to be dependent on changes in shoot elongation rates.

Аннотация: Soils in the tree nurseries studied were characterized by a lower species diversity of fungi than adjacent virgin soils. In particular, the relative abundances of representatives of the genera Mucor Chaetomium, and Trichoderma in the nursery soil were two times lower than in adjacent virgin soils. On the other hand, the nursery soil exhibited greater abundances of fungi of the genus Fusarium, which are causative agents of many diseases of conifer seedlings. To appreciate the efficiency of biocontrol of the infectious diseases of conifer seedlings, we introduced several indigenous Trichoderma strains into the nursery soil and found that this affected the species composition of soil microflora considerably. Changes in the species composition of mycobiota beneficially influenced the phytosanitary state of soils and reduced the infectious lodging of conifer seedlings.

Аннотация: The impact of long-term seasonal soil freezing, drought, and waterlogging on the rhizosphere of young Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L., age class 1) has been simulated in experiments. The results have shown that cold stress exposure leads to reduction of the rates of linear and radial tree growth and of chlorophyll content in needles, a shift in the peak of starch content, and initiation of free amino acid deposition in the aboveground plant parts. Drought activates utilization of carbohydrate reserves and amino acid accumulation in the root bast, whereas soil waterlogging stimulates deposition of carbohydrates but causes a decrease in the levels of chlorophyll and amino acids in all plant tissues.

Аннотация: The mineralization of organic matter in the soils under the six main Siberian forest-forming species was studied. The nitrogen mineralization and nitrification were the most affected by the different tree species. The rate of the CO(2) formation was similar in the soils under the different tree species. The factors affecting the variation of the data characterizing the microbiological processes were revealed. The nitrogen mineralization and nitrification correlated with the contents of the soil carbon, nitrogen, and NH (4) (+) and the soil acidity, while the carbon mineralization correlated only with the NH (4) (+) concentration and the C/N ratio.

Regeneration patterns in boreal Scots pine glades linked to cold-induced photoinhibition
[Text] / M. . Slot [et al.] // Tree Physiol. - 2005. - Vol. 25, Is. 9. - P1139-1150. - Cited References: 37 . - 12. - ISSN 0829-318X

Аннотация: Regeneration patterns of Pinus sylvestris L. juveniles in central Siberian glades were studied in relation to cold-induced photoinhibition. Spatial distribution of seedlings in different height classes revealed higher seedling densities beneath the canopy than beyond the canopy, and significantly higher densities of seedlings < 50 cm tall on the north side of the trees. These patterns coincided with differences in light conditions. Compared with plants on the north side of canopy trees (north-exposed), photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) received by plants on the south side of canopy trees (south-exposed) was always higher, making south-exposed plants more susceptible to photoinhibition, especially on cool mornings. Chlorophyll fluorescence data revealed lower photochemical efficiency and increased non-photochemical quenching of small (20-50 cm in height), south-exposed seedlings from spring to early autumn, indicating increased excitation pressure on photosynthesis. Maximum rate of oxygen evolution was less in south-exposed plants than in north-exposed plants. Increased pools of xanthophyll cycle pigments and formation of the photoprotective zeaxanthin provided further evidence for the higher susceptibility to photoinhibition of south-exposed seedlings. A linear mixed model analysis explained many of the physiological differences observed in seedlings according to height class and aspect with early morning temperature and PPF as predictors. The link between photoinhibition and differential distribution of seedlings by height class suggests that photoinhibition, together with other environmental stresses, decreases the survival of small, south-exposed P sylvestris seedlings, thereby significantly affecting the regeneration pattern of central Siberian pine glades.

Аннотация: Data are presented on the karyotype structure of the Siberian fir (Abies sibirica Ledeb.) from five populations of the Central Siberia. The chromosome set (2n = 24) contains seven pairs of metacentric (I-VII), four pairs of submetacentric (VIII and X-XII), and one pair of intercentric (IX) chromosomes. The morphometric parameters of the identified chromosome groups had close values in the studied populations. The variation coefficients of chromosomal parameters of the Siberian fir correspond to very low and low variability. The intraspecific chromosome polymorphism of the Siberian fir is connected mainly to variations in the number and peculiarities of the nucleolar organizing regions of chromosomes. In the territory with technogenic loading, a wide spectrum of genomic mutations of the mixoploidy type was observed in the seed off-spring of the Siberian fir; triploid seedlings, as well as rare cases of somatic reduction of chromosomes, were revealed.     Specific features of the development of Siberian stone pine megagametophytes and embryos in vitro

Аннотация: Seedlings were grown in vitro from fertilized eggs and immature embryos of the Siberian stone pine. Cultivation of megagametophytes on a hormone-containing Murashige-Skoog medium from the egg formation until the globular embryo stage made it possible to manipulate fertilization and embryogenesis. Immature embryos are the most promising for in vitro cultivation. Their maturation and germination proceed within seven days of cultivation. When zygotic embryos were cultivated, adventitious buds were formed from cells at the cotyledon base and tips. When adventitious buds were subcultivated on a medium containing benzylaminopurine and naphthylacetic acid, organogenic callus and shoots were formed. Thus, cultivation of megagametophytes and embryos of the Siberian stone pine led to the completion of embryogenesis and formation of viable of seedlings.

Аннотация: Morphological, physical, and chemical characteristics of the studied soil are given; its type is classified as loamy podzolized chernozem. The investigations show that the main nutrients necessary for growth and development of seedlings of conifers are in balance. Microbiological processes in the soil of the nursery proceed intensively owing to the activity of different physiological groups of microorganisms that take part in destruction and synthesis of organic matter. Phytopathogenic micromycetes with a predominance of species from the Fusarium, Alternaria, and Verticillium genera are the main factor interfering with the production of high-quality seedlings of conifers.
