Реакции самцов соснового шелкопряда на половые аттрактанты в борах Сибири
[Текст] = Pine silk moth males' responsiveness to sex attractants in Siberian Scots pine forests : материалы временных коллективов / В. М. Петько, Н. В.

temperature anomalies -- sex dynamics -- sex structure of pine populations

Аннотация: The results of ten-year observations on fluctuations in the sex of individual trees and the sex structure of tree stands in two insular pine forests in the south of Central Siberia are presented. It is noted that the ratio of sex types of pine trees has markedly changed since 1998-1999. Significant correlations between the sex structure of stands and anomalies of the annual average air temperature have been recorded since the early 1990s. The male generative sphere of pine has changed to the greatest extent. Periodicity and delay in the change of shoot sexualization in response to changes in temperature are discussed.

and conditions -- adaptation -- sex differentiation -- sexual dimorphism

Аннотация: it has been determined that the sex structure of the population is of great importance for pine adaptation to extreme environmental conditions. As environmental conditions deteriorate, differentiation of populations with respect to sex becomes more apparent, the proportion of trees of mixed type decreases, and the number of male trees increases. A tendency toward correlation between tree habitus, needle and shoot sizes, and the sex structure of population is noted. The prevalence of male trees in populations exposed to increasing stress reflects the rearrangement of such populations aimed at the more efficient use of natural resources.

Syntheses of (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienol and (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienol, Lepidoptera pheromone components, via zinc reduction of enyne precursors. Test of pheromone efficacy against the Siberian moth

Аннотация: Efficient syntheses of (ZE)-5,7-dodecadienol, a pheromone component of the Siberian moth, Dendrolimus superans sibiricus, and (E,Z)-10,12-hexadecadienol, a pheromone component of various Lepidoptera pheromones, were accomplished by cis reduction of the corresponding enynols with activated zinc. The most energetic reagent was zinc galvanized with copper and silver (Zn/Cu/Ag) that achieved rapid and high-yield reduction in methanol-water. The stereoselectivity of semihydrogenation was greater than or equal to98%. A process whereby zinc dust was continuously activated throughout the reduction with an acid was also satisfactory (95-98% cis). Field evaluation of the 1:1 mixture of (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienol and (Z,E)-5,7-dodecadienal with the Siberian moth in Russia showed that the rubber septa pretreated with compound and stored at -80 degreesC were as effective as freshly treated septa. Moth responses to septa aged in open air indicated that lure effectiveness declined significantly after 2 weeks of aging. Thus, if rubber septa are used as pheromone dispensers in Siberian moth traps monitoring, they should be replaced biweekly with fresh septa for optimal trap effectiveness.

Weismannian concept of germ plasm - The main reason of inadequacy of neo-Darwinism

Аннотация: Neo-Darwinism is a result of synthesis of Darwinian concept of natural selection with Weismannian concept of germ plasm. The concept of germ plasm is based on a hypothesis that phenotypic traits are completely determined by genes. Hence, neo-Darwinism describes evolution as a process of alternation of ene frequencies under the effect of natural selection. This is an inadequate approach to the study of evolution. In the course of evolution, genes change their functions, whereas phenotypic characters change their corresponding genes. As a result, every step of evolutionary transformation changes the structure of phenotype-to-genotype correspondence. Therefore, phenotypic evolution cannot be described in genetic terms, the same as to human languages cannot be translated one into another whenever the meaning of words is constantly changing. Consequently, Weismannian germ-plasm concept adequately desribes the relation of characters to genes only during stasis, but is inapplicable to evolution.

Аннотация: Field trapping experiments were conducted against the Siberian moth, Dendrolimus superans sibiricus Butler, in Siberia, Russia, using traps baited with a virgin female moth or 100 ?g synthetic mixtures of C 12 straight chain-length aldehydes, alcohols, and acetates alone or in combinations on rubber septa. Traps baited with a 1:1 blend of aldehydes and alcohols captured many males. The capture rate was similar to the rate of capture seen in traps baited with virgin females. The mixture of aldehydes and alcohols (64% Z,E-5,7-dodecadienal, 10% Z-5-dodecenal, 18% E-7-dodecenal, 8% E-6-dodecenal) and (64% Z,E-5,7-dodecadien-1-ol, 10% Z-5-dodecen-1-ol, 18% E-7-dodecen-1-ol, 8% E-6-dodecen-1-ol) can be used as a sex attractant to monitor endemic Siberian moth populations in Asia, and for surveillance and detection of the moth in countries where the insect might be accidentally introduced.

Correlations of heterozygosity with sexual type and sensitivity of Pinus sylvestris L. Trees to the influence of environmental factors

correlations -- heterozygosity -- Scots pine -- sensitivity -- sex -- Pinus sylvestris

Аннотация: The correlations of genotype heterozygosity with sex and sensitivity of a tree to the influence of ecological factors are considered. A rather close triple correlation between the considered treats is noted. The wave character of correlation of sex and heterozygosity level with sensitivity of trees to growing conditions can testify to the existence of optimal combinations of alleles of homo- and heterozygous loci for the given conditions. They are manifested in the lowering of sensitivity of trees to environmental factors at values of heterozygosity of 0.125 and 0.375. The influence of heterozygosity of trees on the stability of their sexual type in time is revealed. The pines characterized by the greatest hormonal reorganizations in reply to a change in environmental conditions have lower values of heterozygosity. © 2015, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

biological invasions -- bark beetles and borers -- biological features -- invasion patterns -- data mining

Аннотация: Simple Summary Biological invasions are one of the most critical problems today. Invaders have been damaging tree- and shrub-dominated ecosystems. Among these harmful species, a notable role belongs to bark beetles and borers. Extensive phytosanitary measures are needed to prevent their penetration into new regions. However, the lists of quarantine pests should be reasonably brief for more effective prevention of invasion of potentially harmful insects. Our goal is to reveal the set of biological traits of invasive bark beetles and borers that are currently known. We identified four invasion strategies. Inbred, the first one is characterized by inbreeding, parthenogenesis, polyvoltinism, xylomycetophagy, flightless males, polyphagy, to less extent by association with pathogenic fungi. For the second, polyphagous, typical traits are polyphagy, feeding on wood, high fecundity, distance sex pheromones presence, development for one year or more. The third strategy, intermediate, possesses such features as mono- or olygophagy, feeding on inner-bark, short (one year or less) life cycle. Aggressive, the last one includes monophagous species using aggregation pheromones, associated pathogens, short life cycle, and consuming inner-bark. The main traits contributing to significant damage are high fecundity, polyvoltinism, symbiotic plant pathogens, long-range or aggregation pheromones. The present study attempts to identify the biological characteristics of invasive (high-impact in the secondary area) bark beetles and borers species, contributing to their success in an invaded area. We selected 42 species based on the CABI website data on invasive species and information on the most studied regional faunas. Four groups of species with different invasion strategies were identified based on the cluster and factor analysis. The first one (inbred strategy) is characterized by flightless males, xylomycetophagy, low fecundity (similar to 50 eggs), inbreeding, polyvoltinism, and polyphagy. Species with an aggressive strategy are poly- or monovoltine, feeds on a limited number of hosts, larval feeding on the inner bark, are often associated with phytopathogens, and produce aggregation pheromones. Representatives of the polyphagous strategy have a wide range of hosts, high fecundity (similar to 150 eggs), larval feeding on wood, and their life cycle is at least a year long. For the intermediate strategy, the typical life cycle is from a year or less, medium fecundity, feed on inner bark tissues, mono- or oligophagy. Comparison with low-impact alien species showed that the most significant traits from the viewpoint of the potential danger of native plant species are high fecundity, polyvoltinism, presence of symbiotic plant pathogens, long-range or aggregation pheromones.
