Carbon and water exchanges of regenerating forests in central Siberia
/ M. Meroni, N. Tchebakova // Forest Ecology and Management. - 2002. - Vol. 169, № 1-2. - С. 115-122

Аннотация: Direct measurements of CO2 and water vapour of regenerating forests after fire events (secondary succession stages) are needed to determine the role of such disturbances in the biome carbon and water cycles functioning. An estimation of the extension of burnt areas is also required in order to quantify NBP (net biome productivity), a variable that includes large-scale carbon losses (such as fire) bypassing heterotrophic respiration. Hence, eddy covariance measurements Of CO2 and water vapour were carried out in a natural regenerating forest after a fire event. Measurements were collected continuously over a Betula spp. stand in central Siberia during summer 1999. Minimum carbon exchange rate (NEE, net ecosystem exchange) exceeded -30 mumol m(-2) s(-1) (net flux negative indicating CO2 uptake by vegetation) and the partitioning of the available energy was mostly dominated by latent heat flux. Structure, age and composition of the forest were analysed to understand the secondary succession stages. The results were compared with previous studies on coniferous forests where biospheric exchanges of energy were dominated by sensible heat fluxes and small carbon uptake rates, thus indicating rather limiting growing conditions. A classification of a Landsat-4 Thematic Mapper scene has been carried out to determine the magnitude of burnt areas and the extension of broadleaf regenerating forests. Analysis of burnt areas spatial frequency and carbon exchanges of the regenerating forest stress the importance of considering large area disturbances for full carbon accounting. Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

Аннотация: The Siberian moth is the main ecological factor that initiates succession in the dark coniferous forest in taiga subzone of Southern Siberia. Subsequent wildfires only further modify the process of reforestation in "shelkopryadniks". A review of investignations of the Siberian moth outbreak of 1989-1997 demonstrates different ecological and economic consequences of the global ecological phenomenon.

Аннотация: The influence of ground fires varying intensity on ground vegetation has been studied in pine forests of middle taiga in Central Siberia. These fires lead to reduction of a percent cover and biomass of the ground vegetation regardless of their intensity. Mosses and lichens are killed. Post-fire recovery of the ground vegetatiion is determined by the fire intensity, litter burning depth and initial forest type.

Аннотация: The dynamics of vegetation have been studied in forest-steppe pine (Pinus symvestris L.) forests affected by anthropogenic factors such as felling and fires. Gradient analysis has been used to reveal specific ecological features of plant communities and trace the main directions of succession. The results show that these forests are at different stages of progressive succession, with the development of theircommunities following similar trends over the past few decades.

Аннотация: The postfire transformation of the functional activity of the microbial cenoses and the main soil properties under mixed larch forests were studied in the lower reaches of the Angara River. It was shown that the intensity of the postfire changes in the population density, biomass, and activity of the microorganisms in the dark podzolized brown forest soil depended on the degree of burning of the ground cover and the surface litter during the fire. The maximum effects of the fire on the microbial cenoses were observed in the litter and the upper 5-cm-thick layer of the dark-humus horizon in the areas of intense burning. The postfire restoration of the structural-functional activity of the microbial cenoses was determined by the degree of transformation of soil properties and by the postpyrogenic succession in the ground cover. The microbial complexes of the dark podzolized brown forest soils under mixed larch forests in the studied region restored their functional activity after the fires of different intensities quicker than the microbial cenoses of the sandy podzols in the pyrogenic lichen-green-moss pine forests of the same zone.

Аннотация: We studied the ecological conditions forming on the solifluction areas often occurring in cryolithic zone of Central Evenkia. A significant change of microenvironment was registered on some solifluction "microecosystems" that differ sharply form the control ones in plantation. The ecological conditions formed in these areas result in the change of species composition of vegetation and its diversity. However, we revealed no significant differences of separate ecological groups depending on hydrothermal and trophic conditions.

Аннотация: Comprehensive stratigraphic analyses of a standard peat profile laid on a large oligotrophic bog in the interfluve of Kas and Sym rivers, left tributaries of the Yenisei River, allowed reconstruction of local vegetation change and hydrological regime over a period of seven thousand years. The established three stages in vegetation succession in a local bog correspond to different degree of humidification. The development of bog ecosystem is found to be scarcely affected by regional climate. The process and rate of peat accumulation varied in different periods of the Holocene. The average rate of peat accumulation in the profile was 0.88 mm/year.

Аннотация: The dynamics of organic matter accumulated in the soil and main vegetation elements was analyzed for post-logging forest ecosystem succession series in eastern Baikal region. The phytomass was found to allocate up 63 and 50% of carbon in undisturbed Scots pine and fir stands, respectively. The post-logging phytomass contribution to the total carbon pool appeared to decrease down to 16% in Scots pine and 6% in fir stands. In Scots pine stands, carbon storage was determined to account for almost 70% of the initial carbon 60 years after logging. In 50- to 55-year-old fir stands, carbon recovered its initial pool only by 10%. Soil carbon recorded in recently logged Scots pine and fir sites appeared to be 5 and 16 times that accumulated in the phytomass, respectively. The ratio between phytomass carbon and soil organic matter recovered back to the prelogging level in Scots pine stands by the age of 50-60 years. While phytomass carbon also increased in fir stand of the same age, it did not reach the level of the control stand.

Аннотация: The estimates of the carbon pool in the organic matter of gray soils of the southern taiga, the intensity of destruction of its components, and participation of the latter in the formation of the mineralized carbon flux to the atmosphere are presented for different stages of succession of deciduous (birch) and coniferous (fir) forests. The carbon pool varies from 139.7 to 292.7 t/ha. It is distributed between phytodetritus, mobile and stabile humus (32, 19, and 49%, respectively). The intensity of the mineralization carbon flux to the atmosphere amounts to 3.93-4.13 t C per year. Phytodetritus plays the main role in the formation of this flux. In the soils under the forests studied, 4-6% of the carbon flux are formed owing to mineralization of the newly formed soil humus. In birch forests, 2-6% (0.1-0.2% of the humus pool in the 0-20-cm layer) is the contribution to the flux due to mineralization of soil humus. In fir forests, the mineralized humus is compensated by humus substances synthesized in the process of humification during phytodetritus decomposition.
