Аннотация: Larix gmelini is one of the most widespread larch species in northern Eurasia as a whole and in the Rissian Federation dominating here in both the distribution area and the growing stock. Owing to high adaptability and ecological plasticity it occupies different sites within its range and performs well under continuous permafrost conditions. Over an immense area Gmelin larch forests differ in species composition, ecosystem sytucture and the features of natural regeneration. Ground fires are the main force driving larch forest development. Depending upon site conditions, fire intensity and periodicity, fire regimes determine forest age structure, species diversity, spatial-temporal dimensions of larch ecosystems as well- as succession patterns in their trends and rates. Based on the results of long-term investigatiobs we discuss Gmelin larch forest post-fire dynamics in the central part of their distribution in Siberia versus the southeastern part in Priamurye in the Rissian Far East.

Аннотация: The results show that Siberian pine and spruce have high K1 values both along the margin and in the center of zones of absolute larch dominance.     Forest disturbance assessment using satellite data of moderate and low resolution

Аннотация: Envisat-MERIS and SPOT Vegetation satelitte data were tested for estimation of vegetation cover disturbance caused by fire and industrial pollution in central and northern Siberia test sites, respectively. MERIS data were used to assess forest disturbance levels on burned sites in Angara region. Chlorophyll indexes (REP and MTCI) were found to allow identifying up to five forest disturbance levels due to high space-borne sensor resolution and sensitivity to chlorophyll content of vegetation. The current vegetation condition was assessed using MTCI index in the northern (Norilsk) test region. The lowest index values calculated for the most severely disturbed vegetation near Norilsk were found to correlate with sulphur concentrations in larch and spruce needles. Another approach to estimating spatial and temporal trends of vegetation condition used the 1998-2005 SPOT-Vegetation satellite data. The relationships obtained between MTCI, NDVI values, and forest mortality were based upon to map the 1998-2005 forest degradation zone dynamics in the northern test site.

Аннотация: The results obtained indicate a DNC and birch invasion into a traditional larch domination zone, and the connection of this phenomenon with climatic trends during last decades. On the western and southern margions DNC regeneration formed a second layer in the forest canopies, which could eventually replace the larch in the overstory. Larch as a species also responds to climatic trends: its radial increment significantly increased during last 3 decades, and this increase correlates with summer temperatures and precipitation. The other larch response is the migration into the trundra zone and a crown closure increase, as was found on the key-sites "Polar Ural"and "Ary-Mas". The resulting effect of this process may be that larch could reach the Arctic shore, a phenomenon that has happened in a former epoch, whereas the traditional area of larch dominance will turn to mixed taiga forest.

Аннотация: The long-term wildfire dynamics, including fire return interval (FRI), in the zone of larch dominance and the "larch-mixed taiga" ecotone were examined. A wildfire chronology encopassing the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries was developoed by analyzing tree stem fire scars. Average FRI determined from stem fire scar dating was 82 +,- 7 years in the zone of larch dominance. FRI was found to be dependent on site topography. FRI on north-east facing slopes in the zone of larch dominance was 86 +,- 11 years. FRI was siignificantly less on south-west facing slopes at 61 +,- 8 years and flat terrain at 68 +,- 14 years. The implications of the observed trends on the larch community are discussed.

Аннотация: A major focus of the study described here is an attempt to reveal the nature of local and any widespread tree-growth responses to the recent warming seen in the industrial observations. Namely, this chapter didcusses spatial variation in the trends of radial tree-ring growth in Siberia and Far EAST DURING DIFFERENT PERIODS OF THE 18TH CENTURIES. That distribution of trends is compared with spatial NDVI trends and temperature changes in the northern hemisphere over the past 20 years.

Аннотация: The tree response to climate trends is most likely observable in the forest-tundra ecotone where temperature limits tree growth. Here we show that trees in the forest-tundra ecotone of the mid of the south Siberian Mountains responded strongly to wasrmer temperatures during the past two decades. There was a growth increment increase, stand densification, regeneration propogation into the alpine tundra, and transformation of prostrate Siberian pine, larch and fir into another arboreal forms.

Аннотация: The dynamics of vegetation have been studied in forest-steppe pine (Pinus symvestris L.) forests affected by anthropogenic factors such as felling and fires. Gradient analysis has been used to reveal specific ecological features of plant communities and trace the main directions of succession. The results show that these forests are at different stages of progressive succession, with the development of theircommunities following similar trends over the past few decades.

Аннотация: Forest harvesting is a major human-caused disturbance affecting carbon budgets in forest ecosystems. This study was concerned with post-logging carbon pool changes in Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Siberian fir (Abies sibirica) stands. To understand carbon budget recovery trends following logging, carbon stock and fluxes were measured in stands differing in time since logging. In both Scots pine and fir stands disturbed by logging, the tree phytomass contribution to the carbon budget decreased drastically, whereas the coarse woody debris (CWD) carbon pool exhibited a marked increase. Sixty years following logging, the Scots pine stand carbon storage was almost 70 % of that prior to logging and the ratio between the phytomass and soil organic matter was the same as before the disturbance. While the phytomass carbon showed a similar trend in the fir stand of the same age, it was less than on the control stand. In a 50-55-year-old fir stand, 26 years since harvesting, the phytomass carbon recovered only by 15 %. Siberian fir and Scots pine logging sites differed in CWD loading and decomposition rate. The phytomass dynamics and CWD loading values obtained suggest that Scots pine stands which have experienced logging are most likely carbon sinks, as was clear from the phytomass production exceeding organic matter decomposition-caused fluxes. Conversely, logged fir ecosystems are likely to be sources of carbon to the atmosphere due to a large CWD loading, faster rate of its decomposition, and slow phytomass increment.

Аннотация: Frequent measurements of dissolved organic (DOC) and inorganic (DIC) carbon concentrations in rivers during snowmelt, the entire ice-free season, and winter were made in five large watersheds (15 000-174 000 km(2)) of the Central Siberian Plateau (Yenisey River basin). These differ in the degree of continuous permafrost coverage, mean annual air temperature, and the proportion of tundra and forest vegetation. With an annual DOC export from the catchment areas of 2.8-4.7 gC m(-2) as compared to an annual DIC export of 1.0-2.8 gC m(-2), DOC was the dominant component of terrigenous C released to rivers. There was strong temporal variation in the discharge of DOC and DIC. Like for other rivers of the pan-arctic and boreal zones, snowmelt dominated annual fluxes, being 55-71% for water runoff, 64-82% for DOC and 37-41% for DIC. Likewise, DOC and DIC exhibited also a strong spatial variation in C fluxes, with both dissolved C species decreasing from south to north. The rivers of the southern part of the plateau had the largest flow-weighted DOC concentrations among those previously reported for Siberian rivers, but the smallest flow-weighted DIC concentrations. In the study area, DOC and DIC fluxes were negatively correlated with the distribution of continuous permafrost and positively correlated with mean annual air temperature. A synthesis of literature data shows similar trends from west to east, with an eastward decrease of dissolved C concentrations and an increased proportion of DOC in the total dissolved C flux. It appears that there are two contemporary limitations for river export of terrigenous C across Siberia: (1) low productivity of ecosystems with respect to potentially mobilizable organic C, slow weathering rates with concomitant small formation of bicarbonate, and/or wildfire disturbance limit the pools of organic and inorganic C that can be mobilized for transport in rivers (source-limited), and (2) mobilization of available pools of C is constrained by low precipitation in the severe continental climate of interior Siberia (transport-limited). Climate warming may reduce the source limitation by enhancing primary production and weathering rates, while causes leading to surmounting the transport limitation remain debatable due to uncertainties in predictions of precipitation trends and other likely sources of reported increase of river discharges.

Аннотация: Tree ring width, density, and ratio of stable isotopes (C-13/C-12 and O-18/O-16) in wood and cellulose were determined for larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) growing under water deficit conditions in the forest steppe zone in central Siberia (54 degrees 24'N, 89 degrees 57'E) for the period 1850-2005. Dendroclimatic analysis of the chronologies indicated precipitation to be the most important factor determining indicated parameters. Precipitation of June is significantly correlated with tree ring width and maximum density (r = 0.36 and 0.43, p 0.05, respectively). Аннотация: Estimates of past climate and future forest biomass dynamics are constrained by uncertainties in the relationships between growth and climatic variability and uncertainties in the instrumental data themselves. Of particular interest in this regard is the boreal-forest zone, where radial growth has historically been closely connected with temperature variability, but various lines of evidence have indicated a decoupling since about the 1960s. We here address this growth-vs.-temperature divergence by analyzing tree-ring width and density data from across Siberia, and comparing 20th century proxy trends with those derived from instrumental stations. We test the influence of approaches considered in the recent literature on the divergence phenomenon (DP), including effects of tree-ring standardization and calibration period, and explore instrumental uncertainties by employing both adjusted and nonadjusted temperature data to assess growth-climate agreement. Results indicate that common methodological and data usage decisions alter 20th century growth and temperature trends in a way that can easily explain the post-1960 DP. We show that (i) Siberian station temperature adjustments were up to 1.3 degrees C for decadal means before 1940, (ii) tree-ring detrending effects in the order of 0.6-0.8 degrees C, and (iii) calibration uncertainties up to about 0.4 degrees C over the past 110 years. Despite these large uncertainties, instrumental and tree growth estimates for the entire 20th century warming interval match each other, to a degree previously not recognized, when care is taken to preserve long-term trends in the tree-ring data. We further show that careful examination of early temperature data and calibration of proxy timeseries over the full period of overlap with instrumental data are both necessary to properly estimate 20th century long-term changes and to avoid erroneous detection of post-1960 divergence.

Аннотация: The abundance distribution of different ecological groups of lichens depending on bark pH has been studied on 1- to 24-year shoots of Siberian fir in the mountains of southern Siberia. Along with acidophytic lichens commonly found on the Siberian fir (Usnea sp., Bryoria sp., etc.), its young shoots are also colonized by nitrophytic species (Physcia tenella, Melanelia exasperatula, etc.), which is evidence for the increasing pH of shoot bark. The proportion of thalli of nitrophytic lichen species shows a significant positive correlation with the pH of the upper (dusted) bark layer and is greater in the Eastern Sayan (at bark pH averaging 5.4) than in the Western Sayan (pH 4.7). The trends revealed in this study may be used for indication of pollution and ecological monitoring of forest ecosystems.

Аннотация: This paper describes variability in trends of annual tree growth at several locations in the high latitudes of Eurasia, providing a wide regional comparison over a 2000-year period. The study focuses on the nature of local and widespread tree-growth responses to recent warming seen in instrumental observations, available in northern regions for periods ranging from decades to a century. Instrumental temperature data demonstrate differences in seasonal scale of Eurasian warming and the complexity and spatial diversity of tree-growing-season trends in recent decades. A set of long tree-ring chronologies provides empirical evidence of association between inter-annual tree growth and local, primarily summer, temperature variability at each location. These data show no evidence of a recent breakdown in this association as has been found at other high-latitude Northern Hemisphere locations. Using Kendall's concordance, we quantify the time-dependent relationship between growth trends of the long chronologies as a group. This provides strong evidence that the extent of recent widespread warming across northwest Eurasia, with respect to 100- to 200-year trends, is unprecedented in the last 2000 years. An equivalent analysis of simulated temperatures using the HadCM3 model fails to show a similar increase in concordance expected as a consequence of anthropogenic forcing.

Аннотация: The twentieth century saw fundamental shifts in northern Eurasian political and land-management paradigms, in Russia culminating in the political transition of 1991, We used the 1972 to 2001 Landsat archive bracketing this transition to observe change trends in southern central Siberian Russia in primarily forested study sites. Landsat resolved conifer, mixed, deciduous and young forest; cuts, burns, and insect disturbance; and wetland, agriculture, bare, urban, and water land covers. Over 70 percent of forest area in the three study sites was likely disturbed prior to 1974. Conifer forest decreased over the 1974 to 2001 study period, with the greatest decrease 1974 to 1990. Logging activity (primarily in conifers) declined more during the 1991 to 2001 post-Soviet period. The area of Young forest increased more during the 1974 to 1990 time period. Deciduous forest increased over both time periods. Agriculture declined over both time periods contributing to forest regrowth in this region.
