Estimates of regional surface carbon dioxide exchange and carbon and oxygen isotope discrimination during photosynthesis from concentration profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer
/ J.M. Styles et al, N. Tchebakova // Tellus. Series B: Chemical and physical meteorology. - 2002. - Vol. 54B, № 5. - С. 768-783

Аннотация: The integrating properties of the atmospheric boundary layer allow the influence of surface exchange processes on the atmosphere to be quantified and estimates of large-scale fluxes of trace gases and plant isotopic discrimination to be made. Five flights were undertaken over two days in and above the convective boundary layer (CBL) in a vegetated region in central Siberia. Vertical profiles Of CO2 and H2O concentrations, temperature and pressure were obtained during each flight. Air flask samples were taken at various heights for carbon and oxygen isotopic analysis Of CO2. Two CBL budget methods were compared to estimate regional surface fluxes Of CO2 and plant isotopic discrimination against (CO2)-C-13 and (COO)-O-18-O-16. Flux estimates were compared to ground-based eddy covariance measurements. The fluxes obtained for CO2 using the first method agreed to within 10% of fluxes measured in the forest at the study site by eddy covariance. Those obtained from the second method agreed to within 35% when a correction was applied for air loss out of the integrating column and for subsidence. The values for C-13 discrimination were within the range expected from knowledge Of C-3 plant discriminations during photosynthesis, while the inferred O-18 discrimination varied considerably over the two-day period. This variation may in part be explained by the enrichment of chloroplast water during the day due to evaporation from an initial signature in the morning close to source water. Additional potential complications arising from the heterogeneous nature of the landscape are discussed.

Аннотация: The genetic diversity and population structure of Siberian fir (Abies sibirica LEDEB.) in Middle Siberia were studied on the basis of allozyme variation analysis at 20 loci. The vegetatives buds collected from 260 trees in nine populations representing different geographical localities and altitudinal sites were used as materials for study. Horizsontal starch gel electrophoresis was applied to analyze the isozyme patterns of 11 enzyme systems. 20% of the gene loci assayed were revealed to be polymorphic at 95%, and 35% at a 99% criterion. The mean number of alleles per locus, the mean observed heterozygosity, the mean expected heterozygosity, and the effective number of alleles were equal. The obtained data indicates a low level of genetic diversity and a weak differentiation among the A. sibirica populations studied in Middle Siberia. The most significant difference in structure was that between Kozulka and Western Sayan.

Аннотация: A major focus of the study described here is an attempt to reveal the nature of local and any widespread tree-growth responses to the recent warming seen in the industrial observations. Namely, this chapter didcusses spatial variation in the trends of radial tree-ring growth in Siberia and Far EAST DURING DIFFERENT PERIODS OF THE 18TH CENTURIES. That distribution of trends is compared with spatial NDVI trends and temperature changes in the northern hemisphere over the past 20 years.

Аннотация: The problems of valuation of forest resources in Kyrgystan are shortly discussed. The woodlands which possess sorces of row materials of social and economic priority are maintained by local populations under the conditions of traditional forest utilization/ The prevalence of exploitatioin of side, not wood resources is the special feature of forestry in Kyrgystan. The suggestion is that the elaboration of special criteria for estimation of forest typological variation is urgenly required.

Isoenzyme diversity and differentiation of Marsh Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) population in the Western Siberia
: материалы временных коллективов / A. Ya. Larionova, A. K. Ekart // Eurasian Journal of Forest Research. - 2011. - Vol.14-1. - С. 21-28. - Библиогр. в конце ст.

Аннотация: Genetic diversity and defferentiation of Scotch pine populations situated on eutrophic, mesetrophic, oligotrophic swamps and on dry land in south-taiga subzone of Western Siberia lowland (Tomsk region) were srudied on the basis of allozyme variation analysis at 20 loci. The most essential distinctions in genetic structure were revealed between populations of Scotch pine growing under contrast conditions of water-mineral nutrition on eutrophic and oligotrophic swamps as well as between populations situated on the various oligotrophic swamps. The obtained results testify to considerable genetic heterogeneity studied in Tomsk region of marsh populations of Scotch pine.

Аннотация: Premise of the study: Xylem structure determines the hydraulic and mechanical properties of a stem, and its plasticity is fundamental for maintaining tree performance under changing conditions. Unveiling the mechanism and the range of xylem adjustment is thus necessary to anticipate climate change impacts on vegetation. Methods: To understand the mechanistic process and the functional impact of xylem responses to warming in a cold-limited environment, we investigated the relationship between temperature and tracheid anatomy along a 312-yr tree-ring chronology of Larix sibirica trees from the Altay Mountains in Russia. Key results: Climate-growth analyses indicated that warming favors wider earlywood cell lumen, thicker laewood walls, denser maximum latewood, and wider rings. The temperature signal of the latewood was stronger (r > 0.7) and covered a longer and more stable period (from June to August) than that of earlywood and tree-ring width. Long-term analyses indicated a diverging trend between lumen and cell wall of early-and latewood. Conclusions: Xylem anatomy appears to respond to warming temperatures. A warmer early-growing season raises water conduction capacity by increasing the number and size of earlywood tracheids. The higher-performing earlywood tracheids promote more carbon fixation of the latewood cells by incrementing the rate of assimilation when summer conditions are favorable for growth. The diverging long-term variation of lumen and cell wall in earlywood vs. latewood suggests that xylem adjustments in latewood increase mechanical integrity and support increasing tree size under the ameliorated growing conditions.

Аннотация: Karyotypes of three Larix species (L. sibirica, L. gmelinii, and L. cajanderi) were analyzed using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with 45S and 5S ribosomal RNA gene probes and 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining. Two major 45S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) loci (per haploid genome) have been observed in the intercalary regions of two metacentric chromosomes, III and IV, of L. sibirica; in addition to them, minor nucleolus organizing regions (NORs) were mapped in pericentromeric regions of chromosomes I, II, VI, and XII. Two closely related species, L. gmelinii and L. cajanderi, showed similar hybridization patterns; both species possessed an additional major locus of 45S rDNA in the distal region of the long arm of submetacentric chromosome VII that is absent in L. sibirica. Only one locus of the 5S rDNA was found in all larch species we studied; it was located in the distal region of the chromosome III short arm, which also carried the major NOR in the opposite arm. This chromosome containing major loci of the two ribosomal RNA gene families can serve as a marker of the genus Larix. The intra- and interspecific karyotype diversity in the genus Larix is discussed.

Аннотация: The genetic diversity of SSR markers was studied in six populations of Siberian larch, two popu-lations of Gmelin larch, and four populations of Cajander larch. Seven pairs of nuclear microsatellite loci were used for this analysis. 103 allelic variants were detected in 365 individuals of three species of larch. According to the AMOVA results, the variability proportion that characterizes the differences between three Larix species was twice as higher (15%) than the proportion that accounts for among-population differences within the species (6%). The differentiation of the populations of three species of larch based on SSR markers exceeded 12% (F (ST) = 0.121). A significant correlation of the genetic distances with the geographic distances between populations was found (r = 0.835, P = 0.01).

variograms -- typological series -- water regime -- litter

Аннотация: A typological series of native Betula pubescens Ehrh. dendrocenoses along the channel of a river crossing a bog was studied. The variability of the mineral element reserves is described by geostatistical methods as the sum of a trend, autocorrelation, and random components. The contribution of deterministic and random components has been assessed in the years with average precipitation and in the year of 2007 with high and long-term flooding. The empirical variograms and the parameters of the model variograms are presented. The class of the spatial correlation of the ash reserves is described. A primary cause of the ash content's variability is the specific water regime, which is determined by the following: (i) the abundance and duration of the spring floods responsible for the silt mass brought by the river and (ii) the draining effect of the intrabog river, the distance from which provided the formation in the forest of the ground cover with the specific species composition and ash content. The falloff of the arboreal layer in the bog birch forests formed the fundamental mineral background of the litter.

Аннотация: Using AFLP analysis, the genetic variation in four population samples of Rhododendron ledebourii, three such samples of Rh. dauricum, two samples of Rh. sichotense, and one sample of Rh. mucronulatum was examined. Application of three selective primer pairs provided genotyping of 87 accessions from the four species at 213 loci. An analysis of molecular variance revealed a high level of differences between all four species (F (ST) = 0.172). Populations within the species were also differentiated: for Rh. dauricum F (ST) = 0.245; Rh. ledebourii F (ST) = 0.264; Rh. sichotense F (ST) = 0.034. The highest Nei distance was observed for Rh. mucronulatum with Rh. dauricum and Rh. ledebourii (D = 0.057 and 0.069, respectively). Similarity was observed between the species pairs of Rh. ledebourii-Rh. dauricum (0.032) and Rh. sichotense-Rh. mucronulatum (0.034). The Far Eastern species Rh. sichotense and Rh. mucronulatum were characterized by an elevated level of intrapopulation variation. The data from the AFLP-based analysis of differentiation and variation that were thus obtained were compared with the literature data on the morphological criteria that differentiate the species of interest and those regarding the history of the formation of their ranges. The independence of all the species we examined was confirmed.

Аннотация: Variation in radial increments of 28-year-old L. clones in response to changes in weather conditions during the period between 1986 and 2007 has been studied in the Sredneobskii Bor pine forest. Significant genotypic differences in the adaptive reaction norm of the clones have been revealed. It has been shown that the contribution of genotypic differences to the total variance of test characters is usually significant and depends both on the conditions of growing season and on a given increment character.

Аннотация: The soil formation was studied in the 21- to 35-year-old pine plantations created on the overburden dumps of the Nazarovskaya Depression without applying the material of the humus horizon. The surface technogenic formations under the pine plantations belong to the group of naturfabricats (surface formations devoid of the humus horizon and composed of natural substrate). The morphological characteristics, bulk chemical and particle-size compositions, and labile properties of the soils indicate that the accumulation and transformation of organic matter are dominant processes in the artificially planted forests. The accumulation of organic residues and destruction and humification are tightly related to the environmental conditions transformed by the technogenesis and conceal other processes forming the soil profiles. Quasizems created for agricultural production purposes were the objects of the study. They were formed by covering the technically planned overburden rocks with the material of humus layers. The thickness of the humus horizons of the quasizems varies greatly (25-64%); the variation of the humus reserves in them is 34-122%. Middle-profile horizons have not been formed by the present time.

Аннотация: Frequent measurements of dissolved organic (DOC) and inorganic (DIC) carbon concentrations in rivers during snowmelt, the entire ice-free season, and winter were made in five large watersheds (15 000-174 000 km(2)) of the Central Siberian Plateau (Yenisey River basin). These differ in the degree of continuous permafrost coverage, mean annual air temperature, and the proportion of tundra and forest vegetation. With an annual DOC export from the catchment areas of 2.8-4.7 gC m(-2) as compared to an annual DIC export of 1.0-2.8 gC m(-2), DOC was the dominant component of terrigenous C released to rivers. There was strong temporal variation in the discharge of DOC and DIC. Like for other rivers of the pan-arctic and boreal zones, snowmelt dominated annual fluxes, being 55-71% for water runoff, 64-82% for DOC and 37-41% for DIC. Likewise, DOC and DIC exhibited also a strong spatial variation in C fluxes, with both dissolved C species decreasing from south to north. The rivers of the southern part of the plateau had the largest flow-weighted DOC concentrations among those previously reported for Siberian rivers, but the smallest flow-weighted DIC concentrations. In the study area, DOC and DIC fluxes were negatively correlated with the distribution of continuous permafrost and positively correlated with mean annual air temperature. A synthesis of literature data shows similar trends from west to east, with an eastward decrease of dissolved C concentrations and an increased proportion of DOC in the total dissolved C flux. It appears that there are two contemporary limitations for river export of terrigenous C across Siberia: (1) low productivity of ecosystems with respect to potentially mobilizable organic C, slow weathering rates with concomitant small formation of bicarbonate, and/or wildfire disturbance limit the pools of organic and inorganic C that can be mobilized for transport in rivers (source-limited), and (2) mobilization of available pools of C is constrained by low precipitation in the severe continental climate of interior Siberia (transport-limited). Climate warming may reduce the source limitation by enhancing primary production and weathering rates, while causes leading to surmounting the transport limitation remain debatable due to uncertainties in predictions of precipitation trends and other likely sources of reported increase of river discharges.

Аннотация: The content and composition of alcohol soluble phenolic acids (PhAs) were studied during cell xylem growth in course of wood annual increment formation in the trunks of Scots pine. Cells of the cambium zone, two stages of expansion growth, and outset of secondary thickening zone (before lignification) within the period of formation of early wood xylem were subsequently isolated from trunk segments of 25-year-old trees with constant anatomical and histochemical control. The amount of free and bound forms of phenolic acids extracted from tissues by 80% ethanol, as well as their ethers and esters, were calculated both per dry weight and per cells. The substantial alteration in content, proportion of fractions and composition of acids has been found between the cambium zone and the outset of secondary thickening of tracheids, and the character of variation depended on the calculation method. The amount of free and bound PhAs and esters and especially ethers calculated per cell had increased at the first stage of extension growth, reduced at the second, and increased in the outset of secondary wall deposition. The pool of bound acids was more than acids by 2-5 times depending on the stage of development of the cells. Sinapic and ferulic acids dominate among free hydroxycinnamic acids. The composition and the content of hydroxycinnamic acids in esters and ethers also depended on the stage of development of the cells. p-Coumaric and sinapic acids were the main aglycons in ethers in the cambium and sinapic and caffeic acids were in the other stages. The esters from cambium included mostly p-coumaric acid and those at other stages of development were sinapic and ferulic acids. The esters included benzoic acid at the first stages of growth. The pool of these esters decreased from the first phase of growth until the outset of cell wall thickening. The level of free benzoic acid increased respectively.

Аннотация: This paper analyzes variations in the isotope composition of growth rings in coniferous and deciduous species (Picea obovata L., Pinus sylvestris L., Populus tremula L., Betula pubescens Ehrh.) growing in the extremely continental climate of Central Siberia. The seasonal variation in carbon isotopes in tree rings is shown to differ significantly in different species (with significant synchrony in interannual variability. Species differences are found in the use of reserve assimilates in the formation of tree rings in the early growing season.

Аннотация: Variability of soil CO2 efflux strongly depends on soil temperature, soil moisture and plant phenology. Separating the effects of these factors is critical to understand the belowground carbon dynamics of forest ecosystem. In Ethiopia with its unreliable seasonal rainfall, variability of soil CO2 efflux may be particularly associated with seasonal variation. In this study, soil respiration was measured in nine plots under the canopies of three indigenous trees (Croton macrostachys, Podocarpus falcatus and Prunus africana) growing in an Afromontane forest of south-eastern Ethiopia. Our objectives were to investigate seasonal and diurnal variation in soil CO2 flux rate as a function of soil temperature and soil moisture, and to investigate the impact of tree species composition on soil respiration. Results showed that soil respiration displayed strong seasonal patterns, being lower during dry periods and higher during wet periods. The dependence of soil respiration on soil moisture under the three tree species explained about 50% of the seasonal variability. The relation followed a Gaussian function, and indicated a decrease in soil respiration at soil volumetric water contents exceeding a threshold of about 30%. Under more moist conditions soil respiration is tentatively limited by low oxygen supply. On a diurnal basis temperature dependency was observed, but not during dry periods when plant and soil microbial activities were restrained by moisture deficiency. Tree species influenced soil respiration, and there was a significant interaction effect of tree species and soil moisture on soil CO2 efflux variability. During wet (and cloudy) period, when shade tolerant late successional P. falcatus is having a physiological advantage, soil respiration under this tree species exceeded that under the other two species. In contrast, soil CO2 efflux rates under light demanding pioneer C. macrostachys appeared to be least sensitive to dry (but sunny) conditions. This is probably related to the relatively higher carbon assimilation rates and associated root respiration. We conclude that besides the anticipated changes in precipitation pattern in Ethiopia any anthropogenic disturbance fostering the pioneer species may alter the future ecosystem carbon balance by its impact on soil respiration. Аннотация: This paper analyses aerosol particle number size distributions, particulate absorption at 570 nm wavelength and carbon monoxide (CO) measured between September 2006 and January 2010 at heights of 50 and 300 m at the Zotino Tall Tower Facility (ZOTTO) in Siberia (60.8 degrees N; 89.35 degrees E). Average number, surface and volume concentrations are broadly comparable to former studies covering shorter observation periods. Fits of multiple lognormal distributions yielded three maxima in probability distribution of geometric mean diameters in the Aitken and accumulation size range and a possible secondary maximum in the nucleation size range below 25 nm. The seasonal cycle of particulate absorption shows maximum concentrations in high winter (December) and minimum concentrations in mid-summer (July). The 90th percentile, however, indicates a secondary maximum in July/August that is likely related to forest fires. The strongly combustion derived CO shows a single winter maximum and a late summer minimum, albeit with a considerably smaller seasonal swing than the particle data due to its longer atmospheric lifetime. Total volume and even more so total number show a more complex seasonal variation with maxima in winter, spring, and summer. A cluster analysis of back trajectories and vertical profiles of the pseudo-potential temperature yielded ten clusters with three levels of particle number concentration: Low concentrations in Arctic air masses (400-500 cm(-3)), mid-level concentrations for zonally advected air masses from westerly directions between 55 degrees and 65 degrees N (600-800 cm(-3)), and high concentrations for air masses advected from the belt of industrial and population centers in Siberia and Kazakhstan (1200 cm(-3)). The observational data is representative for large parts of the troposphere over Siberia and might be particularly useful for the validation of global aerosol transport models.
