Аннотация: Premise of the study: Xylem structure determines the hydraulic and mechanical properties of a stem, and its plasticity is fundamental for maintaining tree performance under changing conditions. Unveiling the mechanism and the range of xylem adjustment is thus necessary to anticipate climate change impacts on vegetation. Methods: To understand the mechanistic process and the functional impact of xylem responses to warming in a cold-limited environment, we investigated the relationship between temperature and tracheid anatomy along a 312-yr tree-ring chronology of Larix sibirica trees from the Altay Mountains in Russia. Key results: Climate-growth analyses indicated that warming favors wider earlywood cell lumen, thicker laewood walls, denser maximum latewood, and wider rings. The temperature signal of the latewood was stronger (r > 0.7) and covered a longer and more stable period (from June to August) than that of earlywood and tree-ring width. Long-term analyses indicated a diverging trend between lumen and cell wall of early-and latewood. Conclusions: Xylem anatomy appears to respond to warming temperatures. A warmer early-growing season raises water conduction capacity by increasing the number and size of earlywood tracheids. The higher-performing earlywood tracheids promote more carbon fixation of the latewood cells by incrementing the rate of assimilation when summer conditions are favorable for growth. The diverging long-term variation of lumen and cell wall in earlywood vs. latewood suggests that xylem adjustments in latewood increase mechanical integrity and support increasing tree size under the ameliorated growing conditions.

Аннотация: Thanks to acclimation, trees overcome environmental changes and endure for centuries. The anatomy of water conducting cells is an important factor determining plant success. Forming cells are coupled with the environment and their properties are naturally archived in the wood. Its variability across tree rings can thus provide a retrospective of plant's hydraulic adjustments. In this work, we measured lumen and wall thickness of tracheids along tree-rings to explore how trees regulate their conducting system under variable plant-water conditions. Tracheids were measured along 51 dated rings of five mature Larix decidua and Picea abies trees from a low elevation site. Anatomical-based chronologies of annual growth performance, hydraulic conductance and safety, and construction costs were built. Similarities among chronologies and the relation to monthly climate data were analyzed. Most parameters displayed high annual plasticity which was partly coherent among trees and mostly associated with radial growth. In general, summer drought reduced growth and potential hydraulic conductivity of the forming ring, and increased hydraulic safety and construction costs. To evaluate the functional relevance of the annual acclimation, the conductivity of the forming ring relative to the entire sapwood needs to be assessed.

Аннотация: The Trans-Baikal (or Zabailkal'e) region includes the forest-steppe ecotones south and east of Lake Baikal in Russia and has experienced drought for several years. The decline and mortality of birch (Betula pendula) stands within the forest-steppe ecotone Trans-Baikal region was studied based on a temporal series of satellite data, ground measurements, and tree ring analysis. During the first decade of the 21st century birch stands decline and mortality were observed on about 5% of the total area of stands within our 1250 km(2) study area. Birch forest decline and mortality occurs mainly at the margins of stands, within the forest-steppe ecotone on slopes with direct insolation. During the first decade of the 21st century summer (June-August) precipitation was about 25% below normal. Soil water content measurements were lowest within dead stands and highest within healthy stands and intermediate within damaged stands. Drought impact on stands was amplified by an increase in summer air temperatures (+0.9 degrees C) in comparison with the previous decade. Tree ring data of "surviving" and "dead" tree groups showed a positive correlation with summer/annual precipitation and negative correlation with summer air temperatures. Temperature and precipitation extreme anomalies tend to occur in the region with a period of about 27 years. The observed anomaly was the most severe since the beginning of meteorological observations in the year 1900. Data for the other sites showed a positive climate impact on the growth and expansion of Siberian forests. That is, the same species (B. pendula) showed considerable increase (1.4 times both in height and stem volume) during 20th-21st centuries as temperature increased but precipitation remained at adequate levels. Аннотация: The content and fractional composition of alcohol soluble phenolic acids (PhA) in cells with different degree maturation and lignification in the course of early and late wood formation in the pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stem during vegetation were studied. Phenolic compounds (PhC), extracted by 80% ethanol, were divided into free and bound fractions of PhA. In turn, the esters and ethers were isolated from bound PhA. The contents of all substances were calculated per dry weight and per cell. Considerable differences have been found to exist in both the contents and the composition of the fractions PhA on successive stages of tracheid maturation of early and late xylem. Early wood tracheids at all secondary wall thickening steps contained PhC less and free PhA more than late wood tracheids. Throughout earlywood tracheid maturation, the pool of free PhA per cell declined at the beginning of lignification and then increased gradually while that of bound PhA decreased. The maturation of late wood tracheids were accompanied by the rise of free PhA pool and the diminution of bound PhA pool. In the composition of bound PhA, the ethers were always dominant, and the amount of that in earlywood cells was less than in latewood cells. The cells of early xylem at all steps of maturation contained more of esters. The sum total of free hydroxycinnamic acids, precursors of monolignols, gradually decreased during early xylem lignification as the result of the reduction of the pools of p-coumaric, caffeic, ferulic and synapic acids, while that of their esters rised. In the course of late xylem lignification, the pools of free p-coumaric, ferulic and, especially, synapic acids increased. Simultaneously, the amount of ferulic acid ester and synapic acid ether increased too. According to the data, lignin biosynthesis in early xylem and late xylem occurs with different dynamics and the structure of lignins of two xylem types might be different too.

Аннотация: Regional Siberian studies have already registered climate warming over the last several decades. We evaluated ongoing climate change in central Siberia between 1991 and 2010 and a baseline period, 1961-1990, and between 1991 and 2010 and Hadley 2020 climate change projections, represented by the moderate B1 and severe A2 scenarios. Our analysis showed that winters are already 2-3A degrees C warmer in the north and 1-2A degrees C warmer in the south by 2010. Summer temperatures increased by 1A degrees C in the north and by 1-2A degrees C in the south. Change in precipitation is more complicated, increasing on average 10% in middle latitudes and decreasing 10-20% in the south, promoting local drying in already dry landscapes. Hot spots of possible forest shifts are modeled using our Siberian bioclimatic vegetation model and mountain vegetation model with respect to climate anomalies observed pre-2010 and predicted 2020 Hadley scenarios. Forests are predicted to shift northwards along the central Siberian Plateau and upslope in both the northern and southern mountains. South of the central Siberian Plateau, steppe advancement is predicted that was previously non-existent north of 56A degrees N latitude. South of 56A degrees N, steppe expansion is predicted in the dry environments of Khakasiya and Tyva. In the southern mountains, it is predicted that the lower tree line will migrate upslope due to increased dryness in the intermontane Tyvan basins. The hot spots of vegetation change that are predicted by our models are confirmed by regional literature data.

Аннотация: Polymorphism of 11 enzyme systems has been studied in dwarf Scots pine trees occurring on sand dunes and crags in two populations of southern Central Siberia. High genotypic variability of dwarfs and their similarity to normal trees in basic indices of genetic diversity have been revealed. Both populations, including normal and dwarf trees, are in the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The sample of dwarf trees has proved to differ from the "norm" in showing an age-related trend toward decreased heterozygosity. The observed linkage disequilibrium at some pairs of loci can be explained by unequal contributions of trees to population reproduction or by a recent bottleneck event. The populations studied are similar to other Scots pine populations from the Asian part of the species range. Increased frequencies of some rare alleles in the populations from Tuva provide evidence for the probable presence of a glacial refugium for pine in this region.

Аннотация: Tree ring width, density, and ratio of stable isotopes (C-13/C-12 and O-18/O-16) in wood and cellulose were determined for larch (Larix sibirica Ledeb.) growing under water deficit conditions in the forest steppe zone in central Siberia (54 degrees 24'N, 89 degrees 57'E) for the period 1850-2005. Dendroclimatic analysis of the chronologies indicated precipitation to be the most important factor determining indicated parameters. Precipitation of June is significantly correlated with tree ring width and maximum density (r = 0.36 and 0.43, p 0.05, respectively). Аннотация: A spatial description of climatic changes along circumpolar regions is presented based on larch tree-ring width (TRW) index, latewood density (MXD), delta 13C, delta 18O of whole wood and cellulose chronologies from eastern Taimyr (TAY) and north-eastern Yakutia (YAK), Russia, for the period 1900-2006, in comparison with a delta 13C cellulose chronology from Finland (FIN) and a delta 18O ice core record from Greenland (GISP2). Correlation analysis showed a strong positive relationships between TRW, MXD, stable isotope chronologies and June, July air temperatures for TAY and YAK, while the precipitation signal was reflected differently in tree-ring parameters and stable isotope data for the studied sites. Negative correlations were found between July, August precipitation from TAY and stable isotopes and MXD, while May, July precipitations are reflected in MXD and stable isotopes for the YAK. No significant relationships were found between TRW and precipitation for TAY and YAK. The areas of significant correlations between July gridded temperatures and TRW, MXD and stable isotopes show widespread dimension from east to west for YAK and from north to south for TAY. The climate signal is stronger expressed in whole wood than in cellulose for both Siberian regions. The comparison analysis between delta 13C cellulose chronologies from FIN and TAY revealed a similar declining trend over recent decades, which could be explained by the physiological effect of the increasing atmospheric CO(2). TRW, MXD and delta 13C chronologies from TAY and YAK show a negative correlation with North Atlantic Oscillation index, while the delta 18O chronologies show positive correlations, confirming recent warming trend at high latitudes. The strong correlation between GISP2 and delta 18O of cellulose from YAK chronologies reflects the large-scale climatic signal connected by atmospheric circulation patterns expressed by precipitation.

Аннотация: The scaling of respiratory metabolism with body mass is one of the most pervasive phenomena in biology. Using a single allometric equation to characterize empirical scaling relationships and to evaluate alternative hypotheses about mechanisms has been controversial. We developed a method to directly measure respiration of 271 whole plants, spanning nine orders of magnitude in body mass, from small seedlings to large trees, and from tropical to boreal ecosystems. Our measurements include the roots, which have often been ignored. Rather than a single power-law relationship, our data are fit by a biphasic, mixed-power function. The allometric exponent varies continuously from 1 in the smallest plants to 3/4 in larger saplings and trees. Therefore, our findings support the recent findings of Reich et al. [Reich PB, Tjoelker MG, Machado JL, Oleksyn J (2006) Universal scaling of respiratory metabolism, size, and nitrogen in plants. Nature 439: 457-461] and West, Brown, and Enquist [West GB, Brown JH, Enquist BJ (1997) A general model for the origin of allometric scaling laws in biology. Science 276: 122 - 126.]. The transition from linear to 3/4-power scaling may indicate fundamental physical and physiological constraints on the allocation of plant biomass between photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic organs over the course of ontogenetic plant growth.

Аннотация: We present the first and longest (413 years) dataset on stable carbon isotope ratios in tree-ring cellulose (delta C-13), tree-ring width (TRW), and maximum latewood density (MXD) obtained from larch trees growing on permafrost under continental climate in the Suntar Khayata mountain ridge in Eastern Siberia (Russia). With this first study we calibrate tree-ring parameters against climate quantities, and based on these results assess the potential added value of MXD and especially of delta C-13 complementing TRW analysis for future climate reconstruction purposes. delta C-13 chronologies were corrected for human induced changes in atmospheric CO2 since AD 1800. Two different approaches were compared i) a correction referring merely to the decline in atmospheric delta C-13 (delta C-13(atm)) and ii) a correction additionally accounting for the increase in atmospheric partial pressure of CO2. delta C-13 chronologies are characterized by strong signal strength with only 4 trees representing the population signal at the site (mean inter-series correlation = 0.71 and EPS = 0.90). delta C-13 variation shows low similarity to TRW and MXD, while correlation between TRW and MXD is highly significant. Correlation analysis of tree-ring parameters with gridded instrumental data (Climate Research Unit, CRU TS 2.1) over the AD 1929-2000 calibration period demonstrates that TRW and MXD react as reported from other sites at cold and humid northern latitudes: precipitation plays no significant role, but strong dependencies on monthly mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, particularly of the current summer (June to August), are found (up to r=0.60, p<0.001). Combining instrumental data to a summer season mean (JJA) and TRW and MXD to a growth parameter mean (TRW+MXD), clearly shows the importance of the number of frost days and minimum temperatures during summer (r=0.67, p <0.001) to dominate tree growth and highlights the potential for climate reconstruction. Carbon isotope fixation in tree rings is obviously less controlled by temperature variables. In particular, the frost days and minimum temperature have a much smaller influence on delta C-13 than on tree growth. delta C-13 strongly reacts to current-year July precipitation (r=-0.44, p<0.05) and June-July maximum temperature (r=0.46, p<0.001). All significant (p<0.05) correlation coefficients are higher when using the corrected delta C-13 chronology considering an additional plant physiological response on increasing atmospheric CO2 concentration, than using the chronology corrected for delta C-13(atm) changes alone. Spatial distribution of correlations between tree-ring data and climate variables for Eastern Siberia indicates that the summer temperature regime in the studied region is mostly influenced by Arctic air masses, but precipitation in July seems to be brought out from the Pacific region. Both the combined TRW+MXD record and the (513 C record revealed a high reconstruction potential for summer temperature and precipitation, respectively, particularly on decadal and longer-term scales. Аннотация: Somatic embryogenesis was induced in Siberian larch by in vitro culturing zygotic embryos at different developmental stages. Cultures were grown in modified Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with hormones 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2 mg/l) and 6-benzylaminopurine (0.5-1 mg/l). The success of somatic embryogenesis in this species depended on the tree genotype and developmental stage of embryos used for culturing. Somatic embryogenesis from immature zygotic embryos at the stage of cotyledon initiation was most active. After 5-10 days, such embryos formed the embryogenic tissue including two cell types-elongated highly vacuolated embryonic tubes and small embryonic cells. Somatic embryos were isolated from proliferating embryogenic tissues after 2 months of culture.

Аннотация: An analysis was performed on the climatic responses of the radial growth of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. on contrasting north-facing and south-facing slopes in Tura, central Siberia. We developed chronologies of tree-ring width for four plots, designated as north-upper, northlower, south-upper, and south-lower. Both residual and standard chronologies of tree-ring widths exhibited a significant positive correlation with temperature from the end of May until early June in all four plots. The chronologies of ring width did not reveal any major difference in the response to temperature among the four plots. The standard chronologies of ring widths on the north-facing slope were negatively correlated with precipitation during the winter (October-April) and in early and mid-May, whereas the residual chronologies did not reveal clear relationships with precipitation during the winter and May. The significant correlation between ring width and temperature from the end of May until early June indicates that temperatures in springtime play a significant role in the radial growth of L. gmelinii. The negative correlations between standard chronologies of tree-ring width and precipitation in the winter and in May on the north-facing slope indicate that lowfrequency fluctuations in snowfall have negative effects on the radial growth. However, these effects vary and depend on the microscale topography.

Аннотация: Spatial distributions of root systems of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. trees were examined in two stands in central Siberia: an even-aged stand (ca. 100 yrs-old) and a mature, uneven-aged (240-280 yrs-old) stand. Five larch trees of different sizes were sampled by excavating coarse roots (diameter > 5 mm) in each stand. Dimensions and ages of all first-order lateral roots were measured. Micro-scale conditions of soil temperature and soil water suction ( each 10 cm deep) were also examined in relation to earth hummock topography (mound vs. trough) and/or ground floor vegetation types (moss vs. lichens). All larch trees developed superficial root systems, consisting of the aborted short tap root (10-40 cm in soil depth) and some well-spread lateral roots (n = 4-13). The root network of each tree was asymmetric, and its rooting area reached about four times the crown projection area. Lateral roots generally expanded into the upper soil layers of the mounds where summer soil temperature was 1-6degreesC higher than inside nearby troughs. Chronological analysis indicated that lateral root expansion started successively from lower to upper parts of each aborted tap root, and some lateral roots occurred simultaneously at several decades after tree establishment. The process of root system development was likely to be primarily linked with post-fire dynamics of rhizosphere environment of the permafrost soils.

Аннотация: Theoretical morphology should include methods that allow to determine limits of discrete variability of organisms of the given taxon. it is possible to determine the multitude of possible factors based on the demands of natural selection to the given structure under given conditions. The author presents a number of such multitudes that describe the variability of salamander tongue apparatus, kinematics of flapping night in insects and wing shape of birds from the order Ciconiiformes. Another approach is based on mechanisms that rule the morphogenesis of individuals of the given taxon in particulate environment. Examples of morphogenetic multitude are illustrated by the variability of location of organs on plant stems, morphology of mollusc shells and colonies of hydroids polyps. All examples show that existing phenotypes occupy a compact area in the space of theoretically possible forms so the multitude of realized phenotypes does not have free space. If some free space is discovered it means that corresponding forms of life exist in nature but still are not registered and investigated.

Аннотация: Growth and survival of eight populations of Larix sukaczewii Dylis and one of both Larix sibirica Ledeb. and Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. were used to assess the effectiveness of climate transfer functions for predicting the 13-year performance of Eurasian provenances introduced to Alberta. Quadratic regression models showed that transfer distances for five climate variables (mean annual temperature, degree-days 0 C, mean temperature in the coldest month, ratio of the mean annual temperature to mean annual precipitation, and the summer-winter temperature range) were particularly effective in predicting height and survival. Optimal transfer distances did not differ significantly from zero, and as a result, the best growth and survival in Alberta should be obtained by matching the provenance climate to that of the planting site for the five variables. Verification of the climate transfer functions with independent data from Russian provenance tests were strongly supportive. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of climate transfer functions for describing the response of plant populations to the environment and thereby have practical implications in reforestation.

Аннотация: The development of certain form depends on natural selection and morphogenesis. The former process is resulted in analogies - characters of convergent similarity, while the latter can lead to non-adaptive parallel similarity of relatives (homologous series of N.I. Vavilov). Morphogenetic factor is shaped by past selection but does not depend on it at each new evolution act: spectrum of forms that can be produced is totally determined by embryological mechanisms and precedes the beginning of an evolutionary change. Mutual independence of two factors allows to use Bohr's correspondence principle. According to this principle any explanation is not full: it has its own competence area with its own rules for conclusions; there is no rules for logic transition between groups of accidental events; interaction of factors is expressed only as a limitation of their pattern formation abilities. To diminish uncertainty one can use the principle of evolution stabilisation of function by N.V. Kokshaisky, i.e. statement that functions of organism level are kept stable in the process of evolution while some changes at the lower levels are possible. The higher level of changes, the more complete reconstruction takes place in organism. The direction of evolution is minimisation of total sum of changes. As a consequence, the higher hierarchical level of function, more adaptive characters are belonged to its structures. And opposite, the lower hierarchical level, the more freedom for morphogenetic changes, the form of structures becomes indifferent for selection. Therefore the characters of high hierarchical levels can be explained in terms of adaptation, while the features of low level - on the base of morphogenetic peculiarities.

Аннотация: Climate-related changes that occurred in the Ary-Mas larch forests (the world's northernmost forest range) in the last three decades of the 20th century have been analyzed. An analysis of remote-sensing images made by Landsat satellites in 1973 and 2000 has provided evidence for an increase in the closeness of larch forest canopy (by 65%) and the expansion of larch to the tundra (for 3-10 in per year) and to areas relatively poorly protected from wind due to topographic features (elevation, azimuth, and slope). It has also been shown that the radial tree increment correlates with summer temperatures (r = 0.65, tau = 0.39) and the amounts of precipitation in summer (r = -0.51, tau = 0-41) and winter (r = -0.70, tau = -0.48), decreases with an increase in the closeness of forest canopy (r = -0.52, p > 0.8; tau = -0.48, p > 0.95), and increases with an increase in the depth of soil thawing (r = 0.63, p > 0.9; tau = 0.46, p > 0.9). The density of undergrowth depends on temperatures in winter(tau = 0.53, p > 0.8) and summer (r = 0.98, p > 0.99, tau = 0.9, p > 0.99) and the date of the onset of the growing period (r = -0.60, p > 0.99; T = -0.4, p > 0.99) and negatively correlates with the amount of precipitation in summer (r = -0.56, p > 0.99, T = -0.38, p > 0.99).

Аннотация: The deposition of cellulose, matrix polysaccharides and lignin during secondary cell wall development of early- and latewood in larch (Larix sibirica Ldb.) were studied using biochemical and histochemical methods. Active tissues at successive stages of secondary cell wall development were sampled from larch trunk and characterized by morphological parameters and the content of cellulose, lignin and matrix hemicelluloses, being the structural base for lignification. Matrix polysaccharides were divided by their solubility in 4 % and 24 % KOH and neutral medium. All data were accounted per dry weight and per cell. The amount of biomass (as cell wall cross-section area) deposited before lignification was more in earlywood tracheids than in latewood ones. In contrast. the amount of cellulose at this stage was more in latewood tracheids. The intensity of cellulose synthesis was the highest at the initial stage of lignin deposition in both earlywood and latewood and then declined towards to mature xylem. The intensity of lignin deposition was the highest at the last stage of secondary cell wall development during earlywood formation and from the outset of latewood lignification, dropping towards mature xylem. The contents of A and B hemicellulose fractions linked or not with cellulose, before and after beginning of lignification were different during earlywood and latewood formation. Before lignin deposition, the content of B-4 fraction in both earlywood and latewood was practically equal as well as of B-24, while the amount of A-4 fraction before lignification of early xylem was two times more than that of latewood. This shows different matrix base for the beginning of lignification. All together can be the reason for different physicochemical properties of two types of wood in larch.

Аннотация: The impact of long-term seasonal soil freezing, drought, and waterlogging on the rhizosphere of young Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris L., age class 1) has been simulated in experiments. The results have shown that cold stress exposure leads to reduction of the rates of linear and radial tree growth and of chlorophyll content in needles, a shift in the peak of starch content, and initiation of free amino acid deposition in the aboveground plant parts. Drought activates utilization of carbohydrate reserves and amino acid accumulation in the root bast, whereas soil waterlogging stimulates deposition of carbohydrates but causes a decrease in the levels of chlorophyll and amino acids in all plant tissues.
