variograms -- typological series -- water regime -- litter

Аннотация: A typological series of native Betula pubescens Ehrh. dendrocenoses along the channel of a river crossing a bog was studied. The variability of the mineral element reserves is described by geostatistical methods as the sum of a trend, autocorrelation, and random components. The contribution of deterministic and random components has been assessed in the years with average precipitation and in the year of 2007 with high and long-term flooding. The empirical variograms and the parameters of the model variograms are presented. The class of the spatial correlation of the ash reserves is described. A primary cause of the ash content's variability is the specific water regime, which is determined by the following: (i) the abundance and duration of the spring floods responsible for the silt mass brought by the river and (ii) the draining effect of the intrabog river, the distance from which provided the formation in the forest of the ground cover with the specific species composition and ash content. The falloff of the arboreal layer in the bog birch forests formed the fundamental mineral background of the litter.

Forest litter -- ash stock -- western Siberia -- spatial statistics -- geostatistics -- Betula pubescens Ehrh

Аннотация: The ash stock in forest litter influences the fertility of forest soil and should be studied. Litter samples were taken at 70 locations within a 270x60 metre transect in 2004-2007 in the bog birch forest, western Siberia. A geostatistical model with external trend was applied to describe the spatial pattern of the ash mass (kg m(-2)) on the forest floor. Hydrological factors, used as explanatory variables in an external trend equation, account for the main portion of spatial variation (83% and 49% in the years of, respectively, low and high spring flooding). Covariance structure of the data, connected with patterns of vegetation and silt deposits, explains the smaller portion of spatial variation (12% and 38%). The unexplained variation is minor (5% and 13%). (c) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Selection and/or peer-review under responsibility of Spatial Statistics 2011

Correlation between the morphogenetic types of litter and their properties in bog birch forests

Аннотация: A formalized arrangement of morphogenetic types of litter according to the physicochemical parameters provided their significant grouping in three genetic associations. The litter group (highly decomposed + moderately decomposed) is confined to the tall-grass group of bog birch forests. The rhizomatous (roughly decomposed) litter is formed in the sedge-reed grass bog birch forests. The litter group (peaty + peatified + peat) is associated with the bog-herbaceous-moss group of forest types. The genetic associations of the litters (a) reliably characterize the edaphic conditions of bog birch forests and (b)correspond to formation of the peat of certain ecological groups. We found highly informative the acid-base parameters, the exchangeable cations (Ca(2+) + Mg(2+)) and the total potential acidity, which differentiated the genetic associations of litter practically with 100% probability. The expediency of studying litters under groups of forest types rather than under separate types of bog birch forests was demonstrated.

Аннотация: Results of measurements and calculations of carbon budget parameters of forests and swamps of Siberia are reported. The zonal variability of reserves (and an increment in reserves) of carbon in forest and swamp ecosystems is characterized, carbon dioxide fluxes are measured directly by means of microeddy pulsations, and an uncertainty brought into the calculation of carbon budget parameters by forest fires is estimated.

Аннотация: The specificity of the group and fraction composition of the organic matter in peat soils drained to a different extent that have developed for a 20-to 25-year period of hydro-and forest amelioration was characterized using the methods of multidimensional statistics. The differences in the organic matter of the soils studied are mainly determined by the contents of humic and fulvic acid of fractions 1 and 3, as well as of hemicelluloses and cellulose. The degree and depth of the humification are inversely related to the soil moisture and directly related to the peroxidase activity.

Аннотация: Multivariate analysis unambiguously demonstrated the differentiation of oxidoreductase activity (catalase, peroxidase, and dehydrogenase) in peat soils after a 20-25-year period of bog drainage and afforestation. The enzyme activity depended on the drainage depth. A statistical model has been developed to predict the degree of humification of peat organic matter from peroxidase activity and moisture of drained soils. Soil peroxidase activity can be an important indicator of the degree of biochemical transformation of drained and forested bogs.

Interpretation of radiocarbon data on the age of different structural elements of a naturally drained peatland

Аннотация: The degree of aggregation of peat substrate and the size of structural elements can be used to distinguish between different stages of a peatland evolution and characterize relic features in the profile of modern peat soil. Carbon fractions separated from different aggregates are indicative of the age of peat accumulated in the period of active growth of the peatland and of the age of peat transformed during the peatland drying. On the basis of these data, annual rates of peat growth at different evolution stages can be determined, as well as the rates of organic carbon sequestration and the amount of peat forming from plant remains.

Аннотация: No accumulation of heavy metals was revealed in the deep (7.5 m) central zone of a eutrophic peatbog. Ti and W are the most dispersed elements in the peat deposit; Fe, Mo, and Mn are the most accumulated elements. The distribution of heavy metals during peat genesis depends on the quality of sorption humus barriers, and the redox zonality of the peat deposit and, hence, is indicative of the redox stages of boo evolution. Mo is a universal indicator element; its distribution in the peat profile clearly differentiates the redox conditions in both oxidative and reductive environments.

Аннотация: The migration of Cs-137 into deep peat layers is mainly determined by long-term annual fluctuations in the ground-water level and depends considerably on the microrelief of the bog surface. Radiocesium was found to be retained selectively by humic and fulvic acids of the first (0.1 N NaOH-extractable) fraction. A close correlation of cesium retention with the ash content in peat was observed. The accumulation of Cs-137 in root-inhabited horizons is enhanced by soil biota. The level of contamination of oligotrophic peatbogs corresponds to the background cesium concentrations in mineral soils of Western Siberia.

Аннотация: The nitrogen pool in Russian peatlands reaches 4.69 x 10(9) t. Half of this amount is stored in humic substances (mainly, in humic acids) of peat. The nitrogen of relatively stable compounds (mainly, the humin nitrogen) constitutes about 1.8 x 10(9) t. Easily hydrolyzable and mineral nitrogen compounds constitute 9.7 and 1.8% of the total nitrogen pool, respectively. Most of the nitrogen in eutrophic bogs is bound with humic substances, while that of oligotrophic peat is represented by poorly hydrolyzable and nonhydrolyzable forms. The pool of water-soluble nitrogen constitutes 20.3 x 10(6) t, or 0.43% of the total nitrogen reserve. In the case of global warming, eutrophic and mesotrophic bogs can become an important source of ammonia emission to the atmosphere.

Аннотация: The reserves of carbon in peat deposits and peaty and peat bog soils of Russia comprise 44.2 Gt C of humic substances (37.3% of the total reserve of C), 44.7 Gt C (37.8%) of insoluble residue, and 21.1 Gt C (17.8%) of polysaccharides, The carbon pool of humic acids constitutes 25.0 Gt and that of fulvic acids reaches 19.1 Gt. Humic acids predominate in low-moor peat, whereas fulvic acids predominate in high-moor peat. Transitional pear deposits contain approximately equal amounts of fulvic and humic acids. About 89-91% of the carbon of humic substances in different types of peat is represented by heterogeneous complexes of the first and third fractions.

Pyrogenic transformation of organic matter in soils of forest bogs

Аннотация: Natural fires on forest bogs significantly affect all the groups and fractions of peat organic matter. The type and intensity of the fires are responsible for the depth of the pyrogenic transformation of peat. In the course of thermal destruction of peat organic matter, humus substances (humic acids in particular) are accumulated, which leads to changes in the type of humus; the humus reserves may increase by 1.5-8 times. Several ways of the formation of humus components related to the intensity of a fire are suggested. The regressive evolution of bog ecosystems caused by fires is a reversible process. The humus status of pyrogenically transformed horizons and their morphology are preserved within the peat deposit as a relic characteristic of the discrete metamorphosis of the soils.

Аннотация: The application of multiparametric statistical methods has confirmed that peat soils are different in the degree of their drainage and properties because of their modification during a 20 - 25 year period of artificial drainage operation. The following sequence represents the relative significance of the contribution to the soil changes of the parameters studied: groundwater table air capacity pH T-0 Eh water-soluble: C Fe3+ and the activity of soil oxidoreductases in the following sequence: peroxidase catalase dehydrogenase. The necessity to supplement the substantive - genetic principle of the classification of drained peat soils with characterization of their water regime is substantiated.

Аннотация: In the litters (peaty, weakly decomposed, and strongly decomposed) of bog birch forests, the biochemical transformation of plant material includes several discrete stages. The best prediction of the decomposition stages is the set of indices characterizing the humus status of the soils: the C/N ratio, (I HA pound + I FA) pound/C(polysaccharides), and the contents of humic and fulvic acids of fraction 1 in the groups of plant debris of different sizes. The discrimination of the litters according to the level of the biochemical transformation of the organic residues was observed when using the (I HA pound + I FA) pound/C(polysaccharides) ratio, which is 6.3 in the peaty litter and 11.2 and 18.4 in the weakly decomposed and strongly decomposed litters, respectively. The biochemical classification of litters in the bog birch forests is in agreement with the morphological classification of litters.

marsh birch forests -- litter types -- fraction-group composition of the organic matter

Аннотация: There are six morphogenetic types of forest ground litter in the gradient of big grass-sphagnous-dead litter marsh birch forest: deeply degraded litter, half degraded litter, rhizomatous litter (coarsely degraded), peaty litter, turfy-formed litter, and turfy litter. The specificity of their biochemical transformations is caused by the accumulation of humic acids (HA), especially of the first fraction (HA-1), alongside the relatively steady background formation of fulvic acids. The C/N value suggests that the intensity of HA-1 formation is closely associated with the biological activity of the substrate. However, the indistinct difference of these parameters in the forestry-morphological types of litters limits their diagnostic reliability. Grouped biochemical types of litters, such as "soft" (half- and deeply degraded), "intermediate" (rhizomatous, peaty and turfy-formed), and "coarse" (mossy), are considerably discriminated by both the C/N ratio (20, 30, 40) and the level of HA-1 (14, 10, and 6%) respectively.

Аннотация: Under the conditions of southern taiga in West Siberia, the seasonal activities of catalase and anaerobic dehydrogenase in the reclaimed forest peat soil are the highest within the moisture range 20-70% SW, with the optimal values recorded for 40-50 (60)% in the soil heated to 10-20 degrees C. At a temperature of 10-15 degrees C, which is prevailing during the warm season, a parabolic-type relationship between the enzymatic activity and moisture content (10-100% SW) specifies a slow change in the oxidoreductase capacity of soil under these hydrothermal conditions. The seasonal catalase and anaerobic dehydrogenase activities of peat soil are linearly positively correlated with each other by 90-98%.

Аннотация: Biogeochemical migration of heavy metals in the course of marsh formation is mainly determined by physical-chemical processes, such as the oxidation-reduction zonality of the peatbog thickness and the state of humous substances (the quality of humus adsorptive barriers). In the process of peatbog formation V, U, Ta are the weakly captured elements while Mo is captured to a relatively higher extent. Elements as Ti and W are found in separate layers. No technogenic degradation of the marsh ecosystem in the Ob and Tom has been observed.

Аннотация: An accumulation of Cu and As is found in the peat deposit of an eutrophic marsh together with anomalously high concentrations of Ga in some layers. The element dispersed in the peatbog depth in the greatest extent is Zn, and in equally small portions there is dispersed In and Au. The main factors of the biogeochemical migration of Cu, Zn, In, Au, As, Ga in peatbog formation are: the lithological peculiarities of the territory, the oxidation-reduction zonality of the deposit depth within the limits of oxidation and the reduction background, the quality of the humus sorbing barriers, the carbonate equilibrium of marsh waters, and anthropogenic factors. A tendency to accumulate Zn migration streams in the bedding of marsh forests in South West Siberian taiga is observed.
