Enhanced light absorption with a cholesteric liquid crystal layer
/ I. V. Timofeev [et al.] // Opt. Mater. Express. - 2013. - Vol. 3, Is. 4. - P. 496-501DOI 10.1364/OME.3.000496
Перевод заглавия: Усиление поглощения света при помощи холестерического жидкокристаллического слоя

Аннотация: We discuss the trapping features of cholesteric liquid crystal as a self-organized photonic crystal and suggest it for absorption improvement. The imperfection of the absorbing surface is manifested by the reflection originating from the indispensable impedance mismatch. The reflection can be suppressed by an additional surface coating to reflect the light back to the absorber once again. In the simple consideration this reflection loop is possible only twice. For a right-handed CLC coating, the boundary reflection switches the light polarization from left to right circular in the first loop and it switches in the second loop back to the left circular polarization before the emerging light finally escapes from the absorbing process. The enhancement of light absorption is possible in the frequency range as large as the photonic bang gap of the cholesteric layer, which can be adjusted as desired.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in a directional photonic crystal waveguide that holds a nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes within the light propagation band. For the defect positioned on the center line of the waveguide, there are two ways to break the mirror symmetry with respect to either light intensity or light phase. The latter results in a giant vortex of the Poynting vector of the power current within the defect exceeding the input current by, at least, two orders of magnitude. We also consider the breaking of symmetry relative to the mirror reflection with respect to the cross-sectional axis of the waveguide when light is injected equally into both ends of the waveguide. This leads to different light outputs determined by the vorticity of the optical vortex.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in X- and T-shaped photonic crystal waveguides which hold nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes. By use of the coupled-mode theory and by numerical solution of the Maxwell equations for the transverse-magnetic (TM) light mode, we show two stable types of the solutions. The first type has no cross talk, while the second type does owe to nonlinearity of the defect. We show also that direct path transmission processes in the waveguides play an important role for breaking of symmetry.

Structural and luminescence properties of yellow-emitting NaScSi 2O6:Eu2+ phosphors: Eu2+ Site preference analysis and generation of red emission by codoping Mn2+ for white-light-emitting diode applications
/ Z. Xia [et al.] // J. Phys. Chem. C. - 2013. - Vol. 117, Is. 40. - P. 20847-20854DOI 10.1021/jp4062225. - Cover image: Artwork representing main idea of this article . -

Аннотация: The structural properties of clinopyroxene NaScSi2O6 have been investigated using the X-ray powder diffraction refinement, and the luminescence properties of Eu2+ and Eu2+/Mn 2+-activated NaScSi2O6 have been studied to explore the new materials for phosphor-converted white light ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs). Eu2+ was introduced into the NaScSi2O6 host in the reducing atmosphere, and the preferred crystallographic positions of the Eu2+ ions were determined based on the different structural models of the NaScSi2O6 host. The as-obtained NaScSi2O6:Eu2+ phosphor shows greenish yellow emission with the broad-band peak at 533 nm, and efficient energy transfer (ET) takes place between Eu2+ and Mn2+ in NaScSi2O6, leading to a series of color-tunable phosphors emitting at 533 and 654 nm for the designed NaScSi2O 6:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphors under excitation at 365 nm. The ET mechanism of Eu2+ and Mn2+ has also been evaluated. We have demonstrated that NaScSi2O6:Eu 2+ and NaScSi2O6:Eu2+,Mn 2+ materials exhibit great potential to act as the effective phosphors for UV-LEDs. В© 2013 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: We consider a microcavity with degenerate dipole or hexapole eigenmodes. If the cavity is positioned between waveguides, degeneracy is lifted. However, we show that in a nonlinear microcavity the degeneracy is recovered at certain injected power. In application we consider a two-dimensional photonic crystal of GaAs rods holding two parallel waveguides and one defect made of Kerr media. We show that 100% efficiency channel dropping can be attained without a necessity to tune the resonant frequencies of the microcavity. В© 2013 Optical Society of America.

Temperature and field dependence of exciton-magnon absorption of NaMnCl//3.
/ E. A. Popov, M. M. Kotlyarskii, I. S. Edelman // Physica Status Solidi B - Basic Research. - 1985. - Vol. 132, Is. 2. - P. 465-470 . - ISSN 0370-1972
Аннотация: The behaviour of the optical absorption bands of NaMnCl//3 is experimentally studied in the region of the **6A//1//g to **4A//1//g, **4E//g(**4G) transition of the Mn**2** plus ion in the temperature range 1. 8 to 20 K and in magnetic fields up to 20 T. Exciton and its 'hot' magnon sidebands are observed in the spectrum. The anomalous temperature dependence of the exciton-magnon bands intensity is explained by participation of magnons with wave vector K does not equal 0 in absorption. The low energy exciton-magnon band is supposed to be due to simultaneous creation of an exciton and annihilation of three thermally created magnons.

Аннотация: Magnetic linear dichroism (MLD) is observed in polycrystalline La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 films in transmitted light. The spectral and temperature dependences of the MLD are determined for the energy E of the light wave ranging from 1.5 to 3.5 eV. The experimental spectra are fitted by a sum of Lorentzian curves. The MLD spectrum exhibits more features in comparison to the spectra of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), which we measured earlier using the same film samples. Various temperature behaviors of the intensities of the Lorentzian components centered at different E values have been revealed. This can be related to the effect of the surface states on the magneto-optical characteristics of the samples.

Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of oriented liquid crystal (LC) droplets in polymer matrix is considered. A method for modeling transmittance and angular distribution of scattered light by a monolayer of LC droplets with cylindrical symmetry of the director configuration is developed. It is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations. The internal structures of nematic LC droplets are calculated on base of the free energy minimization problem solution using the relaxation method. The results for monolayers of spherical LC droplets with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions are obtained. It is shown that for monolayers containing droplets with inhomogeneous boundary conditions of the "tangential-normal" type there is an asymmetry of the angular structure of the transmitted light over the polar angle. Аннотация: Optical Tamm states localized at the edges of a photonic crystal bounded from one or both sides by a nanocomposite have been studied. The nanocomposite consists of metallic nanoinclusions, which have a spherical or orientationally ordered spheroidal shape and are dispersed in a transparent matrix, and is characterized by the resonant effective permittivity. The transmission, reflection, and absorption spectra have been calculated for waves with longitudinal and transverse polarizations in such structures at the normal incidence of light. The spectral manifestation of Tamm states that is due to the existence of negative values of the real part of the effective permittivity has been analyzed for the visible spectral range. It has been established that the characteristics of Tamm states localized at the edge of the photonic crystal depend strongly both on the concentration of nanoballs in the nanocomposite film and on its thickness. Modes formed by two coupled Tamm plasmon polaritons localized at the edges of the photonic crystal adjacent to two nanocomposite layers have been examined. It has been shown that, in the case of the anisotropic nanocomposite layer adjacent to the photonic crystal, each of two orthogonal polarizations of the incident wave corresponds to a specific frequency of the Tamm state localized at the edge; owing to this property, the transmission spectra of such a structure are polarization sensitive.

Аннотация: Tuning and optimizing luminescent properties of oxonitridosilicates phosphors are important for white light-emitting diode (WLED) applications. To improve the color rendering index, correlated color temperature and thermal stability of layer-structured MSi2O2N2:Eu (M = Sr, Ba) phosphors, cation substitutions have been used to adjust their luminescent properties. However, the underlying mechanisms are still unclear. In this research, a series of (Sr1-xBax)Si2O2N2:Eu (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) compounds were prepared by solid-state reaction, after which systematic emission variations were investigated. The crystal structures of (Sr1-xBax)Si2O2N2:Eu (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) are nominally divided into three sections, namely, Phase 1 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.65), Phase 2 (0.65 x 0.80), and Phase 3 (0.80 ≤ x ≤ 1) based on the X-ray diffraction measurements. These experimental results are further confirmed by optimizing the crystal structure data with first-principle calculations. Continuous luminescence adjustments from green to yellow are observed in Phase 1 with gradual replacement of Sr2+ with Ba2+, and the abnormal redshift is clarified through extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. Sr(Eu)-O/N bond length shrinkage in local structure causes the redshift emission, and the corresponding luminescence mechanism is proposed. Controllable luminescence in Phase 2 (from blue to white) and Phase 3 (from cyan to yellowish green) are observed. Based on the high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction analysis, the two kinds of luminescence tuning are attributed to phase segregation. This study serves as a guide in developing oxonitride luminescent materials with controllable optical properties based on variations in local coordination environments through cation substitutions.

Аннотация: Spectral properties of a 1D photonic crystal that is comprised of two multilayered dielectric mirrors and a nanocomposite layer between them as a structural defect are studied. The nanocomposite consists of silver nanoballs dispersed in a transparent matrix and is characterized by an effective resonant permittivity. The spectral manifestation of the defect mode splitting for the s-polarized waves is studied as a function of the angle of incidence and concentration of nanoballs. Specific features of the transmission spectra for the s- and p-polarized waves are established for the angle of incidence equal to the Brewster angle of the seeding photonic crystal. It is shown, in particular, that, in the region of the continuous transmission spectrum of the spolarized waves, there arises an additional bandgap caused by mixing of the resonant mode with photonic modes.

Аннотация: Propagation of a light through a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing a defect layer doped with a Raman gain medium is discussed. We demonstrate all-optically controlled switching from normal to anomalous dispersion in such a structure. A group delay for the transmitted probe (Raman) pulse is investigated. We show that the group velocity of a Raman pulse can be tuned from subluminal to superluminal by varying the intensity of the pump field. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Аннотация: A novel type of electromagnetically induced gratings based on the Raman nonlinearity in the field of standing pump waves are proposed. Unlike electromagnetically induced absorption gratings, these gratings are based on the spatial modulation of Raman susceptibility. We present a theoretical study of the optical response of such a spatial periodically modulated three-level atomic medium. It is shown that transmission and reflection of a probe Raman wave can be simultaneously amplified in the grating. Transmission and reflection spectra can be controlled by varying the pump field intensity. The basic mechanism responsible for all-optical control of transmission and reflection in the samples of Raman driven atoms are discussed. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America
