Аннотация: A new type of nanoparticle-containing glasses based on borate glasses co-doped with low contents of iron and larger radius elements, Dy, Tb, Gd, Ho, Er, Y, and Bi, is studied. Heat treatment of these glasses results in formation of magnetic nanoparticles, radically changing their physical properties. Transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation-based techniques: x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, x-ray absorption near-edge structure, and small-angle x-ray scattering, show a broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes with characteristics depending on the treatment regime; a crystalline structure of these nanoparticles is detected in heat treated samples. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) studies of samples subjected to heat treatment as well as of maghemite, magnetite, and iron garnet allow to unambiguously assign the nanoparticle structure to maghemite, independently of co-dopant nature and of heat treatment regime used. Different features observed in the MCD spectra are related to different electron transitions in Fe3+ ions gathered in the nanoparticles. The static magnetization in heat treated samples has non-linear dependence on the magnetizing field with hysteresis. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves show that at higher temperatures the nanoparticles occur in superparamagnetic state with blocking temperatures above 100 K. Below ca. 20 K, a considerable contribution to both zero field-cooled and field-cooled magnetizations occurs from diluted paramagnetic ions. Variable-temperature electron magnetic resonance (EMR) studies unambiguously show that in as-prepared glasses paramagnetic ions are in diluted state and confirm the formation of magnetic nanoparticles already at earlier stages of heat treatment. Computer simulations of the EMR spectra corroborate the broad distribution of nanoparticle sizes found by "direct" techniques as well as superparamagnetic nanoparticle behaviour demonstrated in the magnetization studies. Аннотация: Co-Ti-O nanogranular films with different volume concentrations of a magnetic phase and Co/Ti-O layered structures with different numbers of layer pairs are studied by the magnetooptical Kerr effect. It is shown that, unlike the case of homogeneous metal films, the magnetooptical spectra of the nanogranular films exhibit resonance with a significant increase in the Kerr rotation angle in the wavelength range 500-700 nm. It is found that the Kerr rotation angle of the Co/Ti-O layer structures in the wavelength range 500-600 nm grows by an order of magnitude as compared to its value for ordinary Co films. Аннотация: The magnetic field dependences of the Faraday rotation of light and the magnetization of antiferromagnet TbFe3(BO3)(4) and paramagnet TbAl3(BO3)(4) compounds have been investigated. It is established that the main contribution to the Faraday rotation in the TbFe3(BO3)(4) is associated with the Tb3+ subsystem at low temperatures. Аннотация: The influence of the orientational order of molecules in a nematic liquid crystal on the mean value ?? and anisotropy ?? of the molecular polarizability has been studied in the framework of the molecular statistical approach with allowance for the perturbation of the electronic structure of molecules due to the change in the conformation of their aromatic core and intermolecular interactions. Experimental dependences of ?? and ?? on the molecular orientational order parameter S have been derived, and their specific features for the known objects have been explained. The possibility of separating the contributions of opposite signs to the dependence ??(S) due to the change in the conformation of molecules and intermolecular interactions has been shown using nematic MBBA as an example. © 2014 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Аннотация: The interaction of the conformational degrees of freedom of azomethines in the nematic phase, which is induced by electronic donor-acceptor properties of the terminal substituents of the benzylideneaniline core is studied. These degrees of freedom related to the rotation angles phi (k) around the bonds between the substituent and the aniline ring (phi(1)) and also between the CH=N bridge and the aniline ring (omega(2)) are characterized by the parameters Q (k) = aOE (c) cos(2)phi (k) >. It is found that the interaction of these degrees of freedom is manifested in the linear dependence Q (2)(Q (1)). Within the phenomenological theory the effect of this interaction on changes delta (k) in the Q (k) values during the nematic liquid crystal-isotropic liquid phase transition is revealed along with the temperature T (NI) and character of this transition. The derivation of previously established empirical dependences T (NI)(Q (k) ) is presented in the presence of direct and indirect steric effects of side substituents affecting the Q (k) values. A diverse combination of delta (k) signs in the nematic phase, which is a prerequisite for the conformational polymorphism of the nematic phases of azomethines, is shown.

Аннотация: Metallic nickel nanoparticles of various sizes are formed in a thin near-surface layer in an amorphous SiO2 matrix during 40-keV Ni+ ion implantation at a dose of (0.25-1.0) x 10(17) ions/cm(2). The micro-structure of the irradiated layer and the crystal structure, morphology, and sizes of nickel particles formed at various irradiation doses are studied by transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. The magnetooptical Faraday effect and the magnetic circular dichroism in an ensemble of nickel nanoparticles are studied in the optical range. The permittivity (epsilon) over cap tensor components are calculated for the implanted samples using an effective medium model with allowance for the results of magnetooptical measurements. The spectral dependences of the tensor (epsilon) over cap components are found to be strongly different from those of a continuous metallic nickel film. These differences are related to a disperse structure of the magnetic nickel phase and to a surface plasma resonance in the metal nanoparticles.

Аннотация: The magnetic properties and magneto-optical effects in nanocomposites based on Co-Sm-O films prepared through pulsed plasma sputtering of a SmCo(5) target are investigated. It is shown that, depending on the technological conditions and regimes of subsequent annealing, the films can have different structures from cobalt nanoparticles distributed in the dielectric samarium oxide matrix with a magnetic phase volume of more than 60% to a continuous polycrystalline cobalt film with embedded samarium oxide nanoparticles. The evolution of the spectra of the magneto-optical Kerr effect and the field dependences of the magnetization is studied as a function of the film structure.

Аннотация: The scheme for obtaining the composite operator of the selective rotation from nonselective RF pulses separated by intervals of free evolution has been proposed for quadrupole nuclei. On an example of three levels, it, has been shown that the rotation by this operator is performed with accuracy comparable with the accuracy of a simple selective RF pulse, but in shorter time.

Аннотация: The Faraday effect (FE) was studied in Co-Sm-O composite films consisting of nanoparticles of metallic cobalt embedded in a samarium oxide dielectric matrix. The volume of the magnetic phase was similar to 60%. The FE spectral dependence for the condensates studied revealed a substantial change as compared to that for bulk cobalt samples, as well as for the films of nanocrystalline Co and CoSm films prepared in this study. An enhancement of the FE was also observed in the short-wavelength part of the optical spectrum. (c) 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Аннотация: Magnetic susceptibility, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and optical absorption have been studied in a glass system 20La(2)O(3)-22Al(2)O(3)-23B(2)O(3)-35(SiO2 + GeO2) with a part of La2O3 substituted by Gd2O3 in different concentrations. Positive Weiss constants have been found in more heavily doped glasses and ascribed to clustering of Gd3+ ions. Computer simulations of the EPR spectra show that the short-range ordering in the environment of the Gd3+ ions is well preserved. The relative distribution widths of the ligand coordinates are less than 2%. In the more heavily doped glasses the EPR spectra are superpositions of signals arising from isolated ions and ferromagnetic clusters. The increase of Gd3+ concentration is shown to change substantially the strong optical absorption edge while only small changes of f-f absorption band characteristics are observed. This difference is associated with the different effect of the Gd ion clustering on the mechanisms of the strong absorption in the ultraviolet region and the f-f absorption.

Аннотация: We study spin-dependent electron transmission through one- and two-dimensional curved waveguides and quantum dots with account of spin-orbit interaction. We prove that for a transmission through an arbitrary structure there is no spin polarization provided the electron transmits in an isolated energy subband and only two leads are attached to the structure. In particular there is no spin polarization in the one-dimensional wire, for which a spin-dependent solution is found analytically. The solution demonstrates the spin evolution as dependent on a length of wire. The numerical solution for transmission of electrons through the two-dimensional curved waveguides coincides with the solution for the one-dimensional wire if the energy of electron is within the first energy subband. In the vicinity of edges of the energy subbands there are sharp anomalies of spin flipping.

Аннотация: Faraday rotation (FR) spectral, field, and temperature dependencies in oxide glasses with small additions of paramagnetic elements are investigated. Formation of ferrite nanoparticles in amorphous glass matrices is revealed by X-ray diffraction. Particles have crystal structure similar to spinel structure, their dimensions are about 10-24 nm. The FR field dependencies are typical for ferrimagnetic or superparamagnetic substances depending on particle size. Strong FR increase at the samples cooling (more than twice for some samples) in the temperature interval 105-273 K is observed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: We report high-resolution X-ray diffraction, muon-spin-rotation spectroscopic and specific heat measurements in the double spin-chains compound LiCu2O2. The X-ray diffraction results show that the crystal structure of LiCu2O2 is orthorhombic down to T = 10 K. Anisotropic line-broadening of the diffraction peaks is observed, indicating disorder along the spin chains. Muon-spin relaxation and specific heat measurements show that LiCu2O2 undergoes a phase transition to a magnetic ordered state at T-1 similar to 24 K. The specific heat data exhibits a second lambda -like peak at T-2 similar to 32.5 K, which increases with increasing magnetic field in a similar way to that found in spin-ladder compounds. Аннотация: The electronic structures of all the possible isomers of endohedral and exohedral C(60) fullerene complexes with two lithium atoms are theoretically investigated. It is found that the electronic structures of these compounds are characterized by an impurity filled-level state determining the band gap. The location of the impurity state and, correspondingly, the band gap of the exohedral fullerene complexes depend on the coordination mode and the distance between the alkali metal ions. A similar dependence is observed for the total energy of the exohedral fullerene complex under investigation. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/ Interperiodica".

Аннотация: The results of absorption, Faraday rotation and magnetic circular dichroism measurements for glasses with the composition of LiB3O5 + Pr2O3 are presented. The effective wavelength of the transition giving the main contribution to Faraday rotation in these glasses is determined. The contributions of several f-f transitions to Faraday rotation are separated and their magnetooptical activities are evaluated in comparison with the activity of the f-d transition.
