Аннотация: A set of polyhydroxyalkanoates are synthesized, and a comparative study of their physicochemical properties is performed. The molecular masses and polydispersities of polyhydroxyalkanoates are found to be independent of their chemical structures. It is shown that the temperature characteristics and degrees of crystallinity of polyhydroxyalkanoates are affected by the chemical compositions of the monomers and their quantitative contents in the polymers. The incorporation of 4-hydroxybutyrate, 3-hydroxyvalerate, and 3-hydroxyhexanoate units into the chain of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) decreases its melting point and thermal degradation temperature relative to these parameters of a homogeneous poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) sample (175 +/- 5A degrees C and 275 +/- 5A degrees C, respectively). The higher the content of the second monomer units in the poly(3-hydroxybutirate) chain, the greater the changes. The degrees of crystallinity of polyhydroxyalkanoate copolymers are generally lower than that of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (75 +/- 5%). The effect on the ratio of the amorphous and crystalline phases of the copolymer samples becomes more pronounced in the series 3-hydroxy-valerate-3-hydroxyhexanoate-4-hydroxybutyrate. The prepared samples exhibit different properties ranging from rigid thermoplastic materials to engineering elastomers.

Аннотация: A method to analyze coherent transmission coefficients and the small-angle light scattering structure of PDLC layer with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions on the droplets surface is discussed. For PDLC films with inhomogeneous boundary conditions at the polymer -- liquid crystal interface, asymmetry of the angular structure of light scattering with respect to the polar angle is revealed. Besides, experimental results on transmittance are presented.

Аннотация: Alignment of nematic liquid crystals on polycarbonate films obtained with the use of solvents with different solvations is studied. Domain structures occurring during the growth on the polymer surface against the background of the initial thread-like or schlieren texture are demonstrated. It is established by optical methods that the domains are stable formations visualizing the polymer surface structures. In nematic droplets, the temperature-induced transition from the domain structure with two extinction bands to the structure with four bands is observed. This transition is shown to be caused by reorientation of the nematic director in the liquid crystal volume from the planar alignment to the homeotropic state with the pronounced radial configuration of nematic molecules on the surface. The observed textures are compared with different combinations of the volume LC orientations and the radial distribution of the director field and the disclination lines at the polycarbonate surface.

Аннотация: Light scattering by a monolayer of oriented liquid crystal (LC) droplets in polymer matrix is considered. A method for modeling transmittance and angular distribution of scattered light by a monolayer of LC droplets with cylindrical symmetry of the director configuration is developed. It is based on the anomalous diffraction and interference approximations. The internal structures of nematic LC droplets are calculated on base of the free energy minimization problem solution using the relaxation method. The results for monolayers of spherical LC droplets with homogeneous and inhomogeneous boundary conditions are obtained. It is shown that for monolayers containing droplets with inhomogeneous boundary conditions of the "tangential-normal" type there is an asymmetry of the angular structure of the transmitted light over the polar angle. It is based on the anomalous diffraction approximation and an interference approximation. Аннотация: A setup and a technique for optical measurements intended for evaluating the content of unbound compounds in an epoxy polymer are described. The principle of operation of the setup is based on measurements of the spectra of absorption of infrared (IR) radiation by condensed products of evaporation of unbound components. The needed mass of a sample is about 0.01 g. The results of measurements of the IR radiation absorption as a function of the concentrations of the mixture components-ED-22 epoxy resin, isomethyltetrahydrophthalic anhydride (hardener), and a cure promoter (N integral D-606/2)-are presented. The relative content of chemically unbound components in the structure of a polymer matrix is evaluated as a function of the hardener concentration, thus allowing determination of the stoichiometric ratio of the initial components of an epoxy mixture. The obtained results are compared to those obtained by the extraction method.

Аннотация: The structural transition occurring in droplets of nematic liquid crystals formed in a polymer in magnetic field is studied. The transition is caused by field-driven weakening of tangential surface anchoring and develops following two scenarios: bipolar structure/homogeneous structure or bipolar structure/radial structure. The first scenario suggests a cyclic transition occurring upon thermal fluctuations without field. The structural transition is considered within a model of the biaxial liquid crystal/polymer interface. The model describes tendency of the nematic director to align tangentially on a droplet's surface, normally under the action of flexoelectric polarization, and axially along the magnetic-field-imposed easy orientation axis.

Аннотация: The transmittance anisotropy of a composite polymer-liquid-crystal film has been studied as it varies with the degree to which it is elongated. The composite film includes polyvinyl alcohol, the nematic liquid crystal 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl, and the surfeiting cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, which initiates homeotropic adhesion of the nematic to the surface of the polymer. It is shown that, when the film is uniaxially stretched, the transmittance of the orthogonally polarized component of directly transmitted radiation and accordingly the degree of polarization abruptly increase, reaching saturation when it is stretched to twice its length. Such variation of the film's macroscopic optical properties can be caused by an orientational-structural transition to a homogeneous configuration of the director in deformed droplets of the nematic and makes it possible to substantially improve the optical characteristics of light polarizers based on such composite media. Аннотация: IIn this study, electrospinning was used to prepare ultrafine fibers from PHAs with different chemical compositions: P(3HB) and copolymers: P(3HB-co-4HB), P(3HB-co-3HV), and P(3HB-co-3HHx). The main process parameters that influence ultrafine fiber diameter and properties (polymer concentration, solution feeding rate, working distance, and applied voltage) have been investigated and their effects evaluated. The study revealed electrospinning parameters for the production of high-quality ultrafine fibers and determined which parameters should be varied to tailor the properties of the products. This study is the first to compare biological and physical-mechanical parameters of PHAs with different chemical compositions as dependent upon the fractions of monomers constituting the polymers and ultrafine fiber orientation. Mechanical strength of aligned ultrafine fibers prepared from different PHAs is higher than that of randomly oriented ones; no significant effect of ultrafine fiber orientation on surface properties has been found. None of the fibrous scaffolds produced by electrospinning from PHAs had any adverse effects on attachment, growth, and viability of NIH 3T3 mouse fibroblast cells, and all of them were found to be suitable for tissue engineering applications.

Аннотация: This paper investigates the spectral properties of a one-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) containing an inhomogeneous polymer- dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) as a defect layer. Experimental results indicate that the voltage-induced reorientation of LC molecules between the light-scattering and transparent states in the PDLC enables the electrical tuning of the transmittance of defect-mode peaks in the spectrum of the PC/PDLC cell. Specifically, owing to the unique configuration of the spatial distribution of LC droplet sizes in the defect layer, a concept concerning the spatial switching in the wavelength of defect modes is proposed. As a result, the PC/PDLC hybrid cell is suggested as a potential element for realizing an electrically tunable and spatially switchable photonic bandgap device, which is polarizer-free and requires no alignment layers in the fabrication process.

Аннотация: Complex [Eu2(HTBA)6(H2O)6] n (I), where H2TBA is 2-thiobarbituric acid C4H4N2O2S, is synthesized. Its structure is determined by X-ray diffraction analysis (CIF file CCDC 987519). The crystals of complex I are monoclinic: a = 14.1033(4) Å, b = 10.0988(4) Å, c = 15.4061(5) Å, β = 110.003(1)°, V = 2061.9(1) Å3, space group P2/n, Z = 2. All three independent ligands HTBA− are coordinated to Eu3+ through oxygen atoms. Six HTBA− ions (two terminal and four bridging) and two water molecules are coordinated to one of the independent Eu3+ ions. The second Eu3+ ion is bound to four bridging HTBA− ions and four water molecules. The coordination polyhedra are square antiprisms. The bridging HTBA− ions join the antiprisms into layers. The structure is stabilized by numerous hydrogen bonds and the π-π interaction between HTBA−.

Аннотация: Изучены морфология, поверхностные свойства и биосовместимость пленок, полученных из смесей поли-3-гидроксибутирата с поли-ε-капролактоном, поли-DL-лактидом, полиэтиленгликолем и крахмалом. С использованием электронной микроскопии выявлены различия микроструктуры поверхности пленок: у композитов П(3ГБ) с ПЭГ и ПКЛ формируется более крупнопористая поверхность по сравнению с чистым П(3ГБ). Добавление ПЭГ приводило к существенному возрастанию гидрофильности поверхности. В культуре фибробластов мыши NIH 3T3 отмечено отсутствие цитотоксического действия, наличие адгезии и пролиферации клеток. Таким образом, показана биосовместимость исследованных композитов и их пригодность для получения полимерных изделий для клеточных технологий.
The morphology, surface properties and biocompatibility of mixtures of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate with poly-ε-caprolactone, poly-DL-lactide, polyethylene glycol and starch were studied. Differences in the Ÿlm surface microstructure were revealed using electron microscopy: composites of P(3HB) with PEG and PCL had a more coarse-pored surface compared to the pure P(3HB). Addition of PEG led to a signiŸcant increase in surface hydrophilicity. In the culture of mouse NIH 3T3 Ÿbroblasts the following effects were observed: the absence of cytotoxic effect, the presence of cell adhesion and proliferation. Thus, the biocompatibility of the studied composites and their suitability for production of polymer products for cellular technologies was shown.

Аннотация: Using electro- and magneto-optical techniques, we investigated orientational transitions in the ensembles of domains in a nematic liquid crystal on the polycarbonate film surface under the conditions of competing surface forces that favor radial and uniform planar alignment of nematic molecules. Having analyzed field dependences of the intensity of light passed through a sample, we established the threshold character of the orientational effects, plotted the calculated intensity versus magnetic coherence length, and compared the latter with the equilibrium length that characterizes the balance of forces on the polymer surface.

Аннотация: We investigate orientational nematic liquid crystal structures that form at the polymer surface due to adsorption, their stability against the schlieren texture and features of point and linear singularities in them. We demonstrate that surface disclination lines, which also occur due to molecular adsorption, can lead to azimuthal anchoring of a bulk layer and make the singularities with the charge m=+/- 1 stable. We consider the director field distribution in a nematic layer as a result of the combination of two aligning factors, which are the linear disclination that tend to impose uniform planar ordering and point defects that impart the radial configuration to the director. With the use of the calculation, we analyse the energies of elastic distortions of the director field for the radial-planar, radial-homeotropic and radial-radial configurations, depending on the nematic layer thickness.

Аннотация: Экспериментально исследованы двухслойные структуры нематического жидкого кристалла в ячейках с ограничивающими поверхностями поликарбоната при ориентационных переходах из планарно- и гомеотропно-доменных конфигураций в однородное гомеотропное состояние. Переориентация директора осуществлялась с помощью электрического или магнитного полей. Упорядочение жидкого кристалла в двухслойной структуре описано с использованием эффективного параметра порядка. Проведено сопоставление с моделью, следующей из теории упругости жидких кристаллов.
Two-layer structures of a nematic liquid crystal were experimentally studied in cells with interfacial polycarbonate surfaces under orientational transitions from planar- and homeotropicdomain configurations to the homogeneous homeotropic state. Director reorientation was initiated by electric or magnetic fields. The effective order parameter was used to describe the liquid crystal alignment in two-layer structure. Comparison with a model based on the elasticity theory of liquid crystals was carried out.

Аннотация: Методом молекулярной динамики исследовано распределение молекул сегнетоэлектрического смектического жидкого кристалла 4-децилоксибензилиден-4''-амино-2-метилбутилциннамата в нанокапсуле с фиксированным приграничным слоем при воздействии внешнего электрического поля. Получена температурная зависимость параметра порядка (P 2) как при наличии внешнего электрического поля, так и без него. Вычислена температура перехода из смектической фазы С* в смектическую фазу A в капсуле при наличии поля. Обсуждается изменение распределения молекул и их конформации при воздействии поля.
A molecular dynamics method is used to study the distribution of molecules of a ferroelectric smectic liquid crystal 4-decyloxybenzylidene 4''-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate in a nanocapsule with a fixed near-boundary layer under an externally applied electric field. The temperature dependence of the order parameter is obtained both in the presence and in the absence of the external electric field. The temperature of the smectic-C* to smectic-A phase transition in the capsule in the presence of the electric field is calculated. The variation of molecule distribution and molecule conformation under an applied electric filed is discussed.

Аннотация: A structure based on porous anodic alumina with through pores is synthesized. This structure may be of some interest in terms of fabricating electrically switchable membranes. Conducting tubulenes connected to a common input electrode are located in the pores of the structure. It is hypothesized that enhancement of the electric field nonuniformity associated with the indicated structure morphology should help raise the degree of ionic selectivity of the membrane and broaden the range of permissible concentrations of ions in the processed solution. An suggestion regarding the structure of synthesized tubulenes in the context of the problem of suppressing the physical sorption of ions on the pore surface and raising the hydrogen and oxygen reduction potentials relative to those of state-of-the-art field-switchable membranes is also made.
