Аннотация: An electrodynamic analysis of an optical resonator comprising a half-wavelength dielectric layer that is covered from both sides by quarter-wavelength layers with higher and lower refractive indices (RIs) is carried out.For such a resonator, the dependences of the external quality factor on number and RIs of the layers are obtained first. That allows one to determine minimum number of the layers in the structure to achieve the required quality factor at practically any contrast of the RIs. The results of this study provide an easy way to optimize the structures of 1D photonic crystal devices, particularly high-selectivity bandpass filters.

Аннотация: Co-Ti-O nanogranular films with different volume concentrations of a magnetic phase and Co/Ti-O layered structures with different numbers of layer pairs are studied by the magnetooptical Kerr effect. It is shown that, unlike the case of homogeneous metal films, the magnetooptical spectra of the nanogranular films exhibit resonance with a significant increase in the Kerr rotation angle in the wavelength range 500-700 nm. It is found that the Kerr rotation angle of the Co/Ti-O layer structures in the wavelength range 500-600 nm grows by an order of magnitude as compared to its value for ordinary Co films. Аннотация: Self-assembly of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots controlled solely by laser-induced interaction is demonstrated for the first time. Pairs of CdTe nanoparticles are formed under irradiation with nanosecond pulses at wavelengths 555 or 560 nm. Formation of pairs is justified by corresponding changes of absorption spectra. Conditions of the experiment are in excellent agreement with those predicted by the theory of laser-induced dipole-dipole interaction of QDs. The fraction of QDs assembled into pairs is up to 47%. Аннотация: Noncollinear frequency doubling in a random nonlinear photonic crystal of strontium tetraborate via nonlinear diffraction from virtual beam is investigated. This effect is shown to be useful for ultrashort pulses characterization in broad spectral range. Аннотация: The frequency dependences of the longitudinal and transverse permittivities of oriented nematic liquid crystals belonging to the alkylcyanobiphenyl group nCB (n = 5-8) are measured in the relaxation region in the meter and decimeter wavelength ranges. It is established that the dispersion of the longitudinal permittivity is well approximated by the sum of two Debye processes with different relaxation times. The frequency dependence of the transverse permittivity is represented by the dispersion relation with a continuous distribution of relaxation times in a specified time range. It is demonstrated that, in the high-frequency range (f 200 MHz), in which the dielectric spectra exhibit a number of weakly pronounced dispersion features, the total dispersion of the permittivity is adequately described by the sum of relaxation and resonance processes. Аннотация: The temperature dependences of the dielectric and optical parameters for a 5-propyl-2-(p-cyanophenyl)-pyridine (3CP) liquid crystal are investigated in the vicinity of the nematic-isotropic phase transition. The dielectric spectra of the 3CP compound in the crystalline, nematic, and isotropic phases are measured in the frequency range 1-1000 MHz, and the Debye approximations of the measured spectra are obtained. Analysis of the dependence of the static permittivity on the director orientation with respect to the direction of the electric pump field demonstrates that the angle between the dipole moment and the long axis of the molecule is approximately equal to 15degrees. Аннотация: The design of a resonant frequency-tunable high-sensitivity microstrip sensor is suggested. The permittivity dispersion of liquid crystals of two homologic series, alkylcyanobiphenyls (7CB and 8CB) and alkyloxycyanobiphenyls (7OCB and 8OCB), is studied at frequencies of 100-900 MHz. The dielectric spectra are shown to be the sum of the Debye relaxation and dielectric resonances observed at f approximate to 160, 280, 360, 450, 550, and 650 MHz. The dielectric resonances are present in the spectra of all the samples in both the nematic and isotropic phase. The substitution of an oxygen atom (series nOCB) for a carbon atom (series nCB) in liquid crystal molecules has a minor effect on the dielectric resonance frequencies but changes the resonance intensities and splits some of the resonance lines. Аннотация: The results of absorption, Faraday rotation and magnetic circular dichroism measurements for glasses with the composition of LiB3O5 + Pr2O3 are presented. The effective wavelength of the transition giving the main contribution to Faraday rotation in these glasses is determined. The contributions of several f-f transitions to Faraday rotation are separated and their magnetooptical activities are evaluated in comparison with the activity of the f-d transition. Аннотация: Parallel and perpendicular components of the dielectric constant for 5CB nematic liquid crystal are measured in a relaxation region. Two frequencies f(1) approximate to 30 and f(2) approximate to 350 MHz are determined at which the inversion of the dielectric anisotropy sign is observed. It is shown that the observed sizable high-frequency shift of f(2) with respect to the value calculated according the Debye theory is caused by the dielectric resonance near the relaxation region. Аннотация: The high-frequency dielectric spectra of liquid crystals of the alkylcyanobiphenyl group with various length of the mobile alkyl chain CnH2n+1 (n = 5-8) are experimentally studied. It is established that a resonance feature is observed in the frequency range of 300 MHz for all the crystals on the high-frequency branch of the orientational part of dielectric spectra. It is shown that the position of the dielectric resonance is virtually independent of the temperature and the degree of crystal dilution by benzene, but its intensity essentially depends on both factors. The nature of the dielectric resonance found is probably caused by the intramolecular motion of methylene fragments, which are strongly bound with a rigid core of molecules. Аннотация: The dispersion and anisotropy of the permittivity of the liquid crystal 5CB in the solid, nematic, and isotropic phases are investigated at frequencies ranging from 50 to 1000 MHz using discretely tunable hybrid microstrip cavities, Resonance features which grow with increasing temperature are observed in the dielectric spectra. It is found that the section of the dispersion which is due to oriented vibrations of the mesophase molecules covers the frequency range almost up to 300 MHz, and the resonances found could be due to conformational vibrations of the molecules. Аннотация: A technique for reconstructing the distribution function of relaxation times from the dielectric spectra measured over a wide range of frequencies is proposed and tested using 7CB and 7OCB liquid crystals as examples. The objective function, which is the sum of the squares of the differences between the calculated and measured permittivities, is minimized with the Mathcad program package. It is demonstrated that, in the case of parallel orientation of the molecular director with respect to the polarization of the ac electric field, the distribution function of relaxation times is consistent with the Debye relaxation model; however, there are insignificant deviations in the short-time interval corresponding to the high-frequency portion of the dielectric spectrum. For perpendicular orientation of the director, the distribution function of relaxation times exhibits specific features that are most pronounced for the 7OCB liquid crystal and probably reflect intramolecular motions of the rigid core and fragments of the alkyl chain.

Аннотация: Electrodynamical interaction between excited NPs is rather universal and allows formation of wide variety of nanostructures both of homo- and heterogeneous content. Experimental results are obtained for CdTe QDs with the excitonic resonance at 520 nm. Six different samples of the same colloid solution were irradiated at wavelengths from 540 to 570 nm. Modifications of absorption spectra of solutions after irradiation was detected, being most prominent at 555 and 560 nm irradiation wavelengths. Analysis of spectra shows that up to 47% of QDs were assembled into pairs. Therefore, possibility of precise QDs manipulation via laser-induced electrodynamical interaction is demonstrated.

Аннотация: Tetragonal CsScF4 crystals doped with (5 at.%) Er and Er/Yb (0.5 at.%/5 at.%) are grown and their crystal structure is determined to belong to Pmmn space group. Er and Yb ions are shown to occupy distorted octahedral Sc sites with the center of inversion. Bright visible upconversion luminescence was observed under 970-980 nm pumping with red (4F9/2), yellow (4S3/2) and green (2H11/2) bands of comparable intensity. UCL tuning curves maximize at 972 nm (CSF:Er) and at 969.7 nm (CSF:Er,Yb) pumping wavelengths. Different ratios between yellow-green and red luminescence intensities in CSF:Er and CSF:Er, Yb are explained by contribution of cross-relaxation in CSF:Er UCL UC in CSF:Er is a three stage process while UC in CSF:Er, Yb is a two stage process. The peculiarities of power dependences are explained by the power-dependent repopulation between starting levels of UC. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Аннотация: Production of nanostructures consisting of semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) is of interest for number of applications. Development of new methods of NPs' manipulation and aggregation of NPs into nanostructures with pre-defined geometry is also of considerable interest from the fundamental point of view. Under laser irradiation with properly chosen wavelengths excitonic excitations of semiconductor NPs will be induced. Electrodynamical interaction between excited NPs is rather universal and allows formation of wide variety of nanostructures both of homo- and heterogeneous content. Theoretical approach for study of interaction of NPs' ensembles with laser light includes dipole-dipole approximation for NPs' attraction. Experimental results are obtained for TGA stabilized CdTe QDs with the excitonic resonance at 520 nm. Six different samples of the same colloid solution were irradiated at wavelengths from 540 to 570 nm. Modifications of absorption spectra of solutions after irradiation was detected, being most prominent at 555 and 560 nm irradiation wavelengths. Analysis of spectra shows that up to 47% of QDs were assembled into pairs with 10 nm inter-QD distance. Therefore, possibility of precise QDs manipulation via laser-induced electrodynamical interaction is demonstrated.

Аннотация: In the present work on the base of modified energy approach a behavior of the frequency-dependent coupling coefficient of pair microstrip stepped-impedance quarter-wavelength resonators was investigated. It is revealed that at a certain gap between the resonators the total coefficient of coupling becomes zero due to mutual compensation of coefficients describing inductive and capacitive interactions between the resonators.

Аннотация: This study experimentally demonstrates infrared wavelength selective thermal emission based on Tamm plasmon polaritons (TPPs). Unlike conventional TPP structures, which have a thin metal layer on a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR), the proposed structure has a thick metal under a DBR that is more robust for thermal radiation. The number of DBR pairs is a critical factor in maximizing the narrowband emission needed to satisfy the impedance matching condition, which varies with the choice of metal film. Optimum designs for four different metals, aluminum, gold, molybdenum, and tungsten, are presented. The temporal coupled-mode theory was introduced to explain the origin of the high Q-factor of the proposed structure, which can achieve a twice higher Q-factor for the measured emissivity compared to typical plasmonic thermal emitters. The structure is one-dimensional, consisting of only multilayers and free from nanopatterning, offering a practical design in applications such as gas sensing, narrowband IR sources, and thermophotovoltaics. © 2017 American Chemical Society.

Аннотация: Eu2+ local environments in various crystallographic sites enable the different distributions of the emission and excitation energies and then realize the photoluminescence tuning of the Eu2+ doped solid state phosphors. Herein we report the Eu2+-doped Ca10M(PO4)7 (M = Li, Na, and K) phosphors with β-Ca3(PO4)2-type structure, in which there are five cation crystallographic sites, and the phosphors show a color tuning from bluish-violet to blue and yellow with the variation of M ions. The difference in decay rate monitored at selected wavelengths is related to multiple luminescent centers in Ca10M(PO4)7:Eu2+, and the occupied rates of Eu2+ in Ca(1), Ca(2), Ca(3), Na(4), and Ca(5) sites from Rietveld refinements using synchrotron power diffraction data confirm that Eu2+ enters into four cation sites except for Ca(5). Since the average bond lengths d(Ca-O) remain invariable in the Ca10M(PO4)7:Eu2+, the drastic changes of bond lengths d(M-O) and Eu2+ emission depending on the variation from Li to Na and K can provide insight into the distribution of Eu2+ ions. It is found that the emission band at 410 nm is ascribed to the occupation of Eu2+ in the Ca(1), Ca(2), and Ca(3) sites with similar local environments, while the long-wavelength band (466 or 511 nm) is attributed to Eu2+ at the M(4) site (M = Na and K). We show that the crystal-site engineering approach discussed herein can be applied to probe the luminescence of the dopants and provide a new method for photoluminescence tuning.
