Evaluating an improved parameterization of the soil emission in L-MEB
/ J. P. Wigneron [et al.] // IEEE Trans. Geosci. Remote Sensing. - 2011. - Vol. 49, Is. 4. - P. 1177-1189, DOI 10.1109/TGRS.2010.2075935. - Cited References: 26 . - ISSN 0196-2892
Аннотация: In the forward model [L-band microwave emission of the biosphere (L-MEB)] used in the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity level-2 retrieval algorithm, modeling of the roughness effects is based on a simple semiempirical approach using three main "roughness" model parameters: H-R, Q(R), and N-R. In many studies, the two parameters Q(R) and N-R are set to zero. However, recent results in the literature showed that this is too approximate to accurately simulate the microwave emission of the rough soil surfaces at L-band. To investigate this, a reanalysis of the PORTOS-93 data set was carried out in this paper, considering a large range of roughness conditions. First, the results confirmed that Q(R) could be set to zero. Second, a refinement of the L-MEB soil model, considering values of N-R for both polarizations (namely, N-RV and N-RH), improved the model accuracy. Furthermore, simple calibrations relating the retrieved values of the roughness model parameters H-R and (N-RH - N-RV) to the standard deviation of the surface height were developed. This new calibration of L-MEB provided a good accuracy (better than 5 K) over a large range of soil roughness and moisture conditions of the PORTOS-93 data set. Conversely, the calibrations of the roughness effects based on the Choudhury approach, which is still widely used, provided unrealistic values of surface emissivities for medium or large roughness conditions.

Аннотация: We consider light transmission in X- and T-shaped photonic crystal waveguides which hold nonlinear defect with two resonant dipole modes. By use of the coupled-mode theory and by numerical solution of the Maxwell equations for the transverse-magnetic (TM) light mode, we show two stable types of the solutions. The first type has no cross talk, while the second type does owe to nonlinearity of the defect. We show also that direct path transmission processes in the waveguides play an important role for breaking of symmetry.

Аннотация: The correlation between experimental magnetic field dependences of magnetoresistance and magnetization hysteresis in granular YBa2Cu3O7 is established. Within the proposed approach, magnetoresistance is assumed to be determined by the effective field in the intergrain boundaries the ensemble of which is considered to be a Josephson medium. The effective field in the intergrain medium can be written in the form B (eff)(H)=H-4 pi M(H)x alpha, where alpha is the parameter of averaged demagnetizing factors of grains and the degree of flux compression. A comparison of experimental magnetoresistance R(H) and magnetization M(H) hysteresis dependences obtained at different external magnetic field sweep rates yields the value alpha similar to 10, which is caused by the flux compression between grains. The proposed model describes well most of the features of the magnetoresistance hysteresis in granular high-T (C) superconductors.

Аннотация: An increase in the cobalt concentration in Pr-Dy-Fe-Co-B alloys leads to the substitution of Co atoms for Fe atoms in the atomic positions, which are the nearest neighbors with the rare-earth metal atoms, and to the formation of a significant number of boron-rich phases. At the highest (limiting) cobalt concentrations, boron can be substituted for the transition metals. As a result, the exchange interaction between magnetic sublattices of the rare-earth and transition metals is weakened. In turn, this leads to a decrease in the contribution from the rare-earth ions to the magnetic anisotropy, the temperature stability of which increases.

Аннотация: This paper reports on a joint theoretical and experimental study of the Pauli quantum-mechanical stress tensor T(alpha beta)(x,y) for open two-dimensional chaotic billiards. In the case of a finite current flow through the system the interior wave function is expressed as psi=u + iv. With the assumption that u and v are Gaussian random fields we derive analytic expressions for the statistical distributions for the quantum stress tensor components T(alpha beta). The Gaussian random field model is tested for a Sinai billiard with two opposite leads by analyzing the scattering wave functions obtained numerically from the corresponding Schrodinger equation. Two-dimensional quantum billiards may be emulated from planar microwave analogs. Hence we report on microwave measurements for an open two-dimensional cavity and how the quantum stress tensor analog is extracted from the recorded electric field. The agreement with the theoretical predictions for the distributions for T(alpha beta)(x,y) is quite satisfactory for small net currents. However, a distinct difference between experiments and theory is observed at higher net flow, which could be explained using a Gaussian random field, where the net current was taken into account by an additional plane wave with a preferential direction and amplitude.

Аннотация: We consider the nodal points (NPs) u=0 and v=0 of the in-plane vectorial displacements u=(u,v) which obey the Navier-Cauchy equation. Similar to the Berry conjecture of quantum chaos, we present the in-plane eigenstates of chaotic billiards as the real part of the superposition of longitudinal and transverse plane waves with random phases. By an average over random phases we derive the mean density and correlation function of NPs. Consequently we consider the distribution of the nearest distances between NPs.

Аннотация: We have studied the resistivity and thermoelectromotive force (thermo emf) in a temperature range of T = 80-1000 K, the magnetic susceptibility and magnetization in a temperature range of T= 4.2-300 K at an external magnetic field of up to 70 kOe, and the structural characteristics of CoxMn1 - S-x sulfides (0 <= x <= 0.4). Anomalies in the transport properties of these compounds have been found in the temperature intervals Delta T-1 = 200-270 K and Delta T-2 = 530-670 K and at T-3 similar to T-N. The temperature dependences of the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and resistivity, as well as the current-voltage characteristics, exhibit hysteresis. In the domain of magnetic ordering at temperatures below the Neel temperature (TN), the anti ferromagnetic CoxMn1 - xS sulfides possess a spontaneous magnetic moment that is explained using a model of the orbital ordering of electrons in the t(2g) bands. The influence of the cobalt-ion-induced charge ordering on the transport and magnetic properties of sulfides has been studied. The calculated values of the temperatures corresponding to the maxima of charge susceptibility, which are related to a competition between the on-site Coulomb interaction of holes in various subbands and their weak hybridization, agree well with the experimental data.

Аннотация: The electrical properties and the Hall effect in the FexMn1-xS magnetic semiconductors (0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.5) have been experimentally studied in the range 77-300 K in magnetic fields of up to 15 kOe. The cation-substituted sulfides with 0.25less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.3 possessing colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) were established to be narrow-gap semiconductors with carrier concentrations nsimilar to10(11)-10(15) cm(-3) and high carrier mobilities musimilar to 10(2)-10(4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1). It is believed that the CMR effect in these sulfides can be explained in terms of the model of magnetic and electron phase separation, which is analogous to the percolation theory in the case of heavily doped semiconductors. Аннотация: The quasienergy spectrum of a Bloch electron affected by dc-ac fields is known to have a fractal structure as a function of the so-called electric matching ratio, which is the ratio of the ac field frequency and the Bloch frequency. This paper studies a manifestation of the fractal nature of the spectrum in the system "atom in a standing laser wave", which is a quantum-optical realization of a Bloch electron. It is shown that for an appropriate choice of the system parameters the atomic survival probability (a quantity measured in laboratory experiments) also develops a fractal structure as a function of the electric matching ratio. Numerical simulations under classically chaotic scattering conditions show good agreement with theoretical predictions based on random matrix theory.

Аннотация: We study the dynamics of the classical homogeneous SU(2) x U(1) gauge theory in the spontaneously broken phase. A transition from regular to chaotic dynamics is shown to occur for energy densities epsilon 0.3m(w)2/G(F) almost-equal-to 2 x 10(10) GeV/fm3. The regular regime is characterized by a sharp frequency spectrum for the Yang-Mills fields. The frequency spectrum in the chaotic regime is continuous and the sharp frequency lines of the regular regime are dispersed. In the early universe or at high energy densities in a Yang-Mills plasma this transition may have observable effects that can be studied by analyzing the frequency spectrum and the time correlation functions. In the chaotic regime these time correlation functions decay considerably faster than in the regular regime.

Аннотация: The method of numerical micromagnetic simulation was used to study the magnetization dynamics of a thin film with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy during ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) excitation in it on the local sites by a linearly polarized high-frequency magnetic field emitted from the 1 mm opening in the metallic screen of the transmission line. It was established that non-uniformities of demagnetizing fields emerging near the film edges lead not only to the change in the FMR field, but also to the change in the value and direction of the uniaxial anisotropy field. The distribution of non-uniformities of the magnetic anisotropy characteristics over the area of 60 nm thick permalloy film that was measured on the scanning FMR spectrometer agrees well with the micromagnetic simulation results. Demagnetizing fields were proved to be the main cause for the edge effects in magnetic films.
