Аннотация: The Bi2Sn2O7 compound existing simultaneously in two polymorphic modifications, namely, orthorhombic and cubic, has been synthesized for the first time by solid-phase synthesis. The dielectric and electrical properties of the compound have been studied in the temperature range 100 K ˂ T ˂ 500 K. Anomalies in the temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity and the permittivity (imaginary and real parts) have been found at both low and high temperatures. These features are explained in terms of the model of martensitic phase transitions.

Аннотация: A ferromagnetic Fe–In2O3 nanocomposite thin film has been synthesized by the thermite reaction Fe2O3+In→Fe–In2O3. Measurements of the Hall carrier concentration, Hall mobility and magnetoresistance have been conducted at room temperature. The nanocomposite Fe–In2O3 thin film had n=1.94·1020 cm−3, μ=6.45 cm2/Vs and negative magnetoresistance. The magnetoresistance for 8.8 kOe was ~−0.22%.The negative magnetoresistance was well described by the weak localization and model proposed by Khosla and Fischer.

Аннотация: A systematic study of the iron–silicon interfaces formed upon preparation of (Fe/Si) multilayers has been performed by the combination of modern and powerful techniques. Samples were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy under ultrahigh vacuum onto Si wafers or single crystalline Ag(100) buffer layers grown on GaAs(100). The morphology of these films and their interfaces was studied by a combination of scanning transmission electron microscopy, X-ray reflectivity, angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Si-on-Fe interface thickness and roughness were determined to be 1.4(1) nm and 0.6(1) nm, respectively. Moreover, determination of the stable phases formed at both Fe-on-Si and Si-on-Fe interfaces was performed using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy on multilayers with well separated Si-on-Fe and Fe-on-Si interfaces. It is shown that while a fraction of Fe remains as α-Fe, the rest has reacted with Si, forming the paramagnetic FeSi phase and a ferromagnetic Fe rich silicide. We conclude that there is an identical paramagnetic c-Fe1−xSi silicide sublayer in both Si-on-Fe and Fe-on-Si interfaces, whereas an asymmetry is revealed in the composition of the ferromagnetic silicide sublayer.

Аннотация: This paper introduces a semi-analytical method for calculating the Hall conductivity in the single-band approximation. The method goes beyond the linear response theory and thus, it formally imposes no limitation on the electric-field magnitude. It is shown that, when the Bloch frequency exceeds the cyclotron frequency, the Hall current decreases with increasing electric field. The obtained results can be directly applied to the cold Bose atoms in a 2D optical lattice, where the single-band approximation is well justified. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2011

Аннотация: The magnetic properties and magneto-optical effects in nanocomposites based on Co-Sm-O films prepared through pulsed plasma sputtering of a SmCo(5) target are investigated. It is shown that, depending on the technological conditions and regimes of subsequent annealing, the films can have different structures from cobalt nanoparticles distributed in the dielectric samarium oxide matrix with a magnetic phase volume of more than 60% to a continuous polycrystalline cobalt film with embedded samarium oxide nanoparticles. The evolution of the spectra of the magneto-optical Kerr effect and the field dependences of the magnetization is studied as a function of the film structure.

Relaxation of the remanent resistance of granular HTSC Y-Ba-Cu-O plus CuO composites after magnetic field treatment

Аннотация: The hysteresis of magnetoresistance R(H) and relaxation of the remanent resistance R-rem with time after magnetic field treatment of HTSC (Y-Ba-Cu-O) + CuO composites are studied. Such a composite constitutes a network of Josephson junctions wherein the nonsuperconducting component (CuO) forms Josephson barriers between HTSC grains. By comparing the experimental R-rem(t) and R(H) dependences, it is shown that the relaxation of the remanent resistance is caused by the decreased magnetic field in the intergrain medium due to relaxation of magnetization. The reason is uncovered for the differences between the published values of pinning potentials determined by measuring the relaxation of magnetization or resistance and fitting them by the Anderson law.

The magnetic-field-driven effect of microwave detection in a manganite granular system

Аннотация: We demonstrate the microwave detection effect in a granular La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 sample. Dc voltage generated by the sample in response to microwave irradiation below the Curie temperature is found to be dependent on the applied magnetic field. The magnetic field dependence of the dc voltage has a broad peak resembling an absorption line. The detection effect depends substantially on the magnetic history of the sample; however, identical measurement conditions provide reproducibility of the experimental results. The detected dc voltage increases linearly with microwave power and strongly depends on a bias current through the sample. According to the results of systematic measurements, there exist two contributions to a value of the detected output signal. The first is magneto-independent; it can be explained in the framework of a mechanism used traditionally for description of the rectification effect in metal-insulator-metal junctions with nonmagnetic metals. The other is magneto-dependent; it originates from the interplay between the spin-dependent current through magnetic tunnel junctions and spin dynamics of the grains, which form these junctions in the sample.

Аннотация: We have experimentally studied the magnetic properties of manganite films obtained for first time using an extraction-pyrolysis technique. It is established that the characteristics of samples significantly depend on the conditions of final annealing. The annealing at temperatures T-a 970 K is accompanied by strong thermomagmetic effects. and the resulting films possess properties similar to those of spin glasses. When the annealig temperature is increased to T-a = 1020 K, the films exhibit magnetic properties typical of ferromagnetic systems.

Аннотация: The electrical properties and the Hall effect in the FexMn1-xS magnetic semiconductors (0less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.5) have been experimentally studied in the range 77-300 K in magnetic fields of up to 15 kOe. The cation-substituted sulfides with 0.25less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.3 possessing colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) were established to be narrow-gap semiconductors with carrier concentrations nsimilar to10(11)-10(15) cm(-3) and high carrier mobilities musimilar to 10(2)-10(4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1). It is believed that the CMR effect in these sulfides can be explained in terms of the model of magnetic and electron phase separation, which is analogous to the percolation theory in the case of heavily doped semiconductors. Аннотация: The electrical resistivity of single crystal alpha-MnS in crystallographic directions [111] and [100] was found to be anisotropic in the temperature interval 77-300 K. The change in activation energy below the Neel temperature was determined. Magnetoresistance was revealed, and reversal of its sign in the (111) plane above the Neel point was found. The experimental data are analyzed in terms of the s-d model, with the manganese ion holes interacting with localized spins assumed to be free carriers. (C) 2004 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Аннотация: In situ stress measurements have been performed during the deposition of epitaxial Ag monolayers on a Fe whisker. A compressive stress of -0.6 GPa is measured above a 5-ML Ag thickness which is ascribed to the epitaxial misfit of -0.8% between Ag and Fe. Back-extrapolation of the coverage dependent stress measurements to zero coverage reveals an Ag-induced change of the surface stress of Fe(100) of -1.23 N/m. Comparing this surface stress change with the calculated surface stress for Ag(100) suggests a tensile surface stress of +2.05 N/m for clean Fe(100). The deposition of 2 - 5 layers of Ag does not change the stress induced by the first layer significantly. This almost stress free growth is assigned to a rougher surface morphology which is most likely caused by a surface alloy formation.

Аннотация: Using a nonequilibrium diagram technique for Hubbard operator Green functions combined with a generalization of the transfer Hamiltonian formalism, we calculate the transport through a magnetic quantum dot system with spin-dependent couplings to the contacts. In specific regimes of the parameter space the spin-dependent tunnel current becomes more than 99.95% spin polarized, suggesting that a device thus constructed can be used in spin-filter applications. First-principles electronic structure calculations show the existence of nanostructured systems, such as, e.g., MgO/Fe/Pd(5)/Fe/MgO (001), with the desired properties in the direction of the current.

Аннотация: The classical solid-phase reaction between Fe2O3 and Al layers in thin films is initiated. It is shown that, in the reaction products, Fe granulated films are formed in the Al2O3 nonconducting matrix. Analysis of the reaction equation demonstrates that the volume fraction of iron in the granulated films is less than the percolation threshold. This determines the magnetic properties of iron clusters in a superparamagnetic state. It is assumed that the nanocrystalline microstructure exists in thin films after solid-phase reactions proceeding under conditions of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. Аннотация: By means of a diagram technique for Hubbard operators, we show the existence of a spin-dependent renormalization of the localized levels in an interacting region, e.g., quantum dot, modeled by the Anderson Hamiltonian with two conduction bands. It is shown that the renormalization of the levels with a given spin direction is due to kinematic interactions with the conduction subbands of the opposite spin. The consequence of this dressing of the localized levels is a drastically decreased tunneling current for ferromagnetically ordered leads compared to that of paramagnetically ordered leads. Furthermore, the studied system shows a spin-dependent resonant tunneling behavior for ferromagnetically ordered leads.

Аннотация: For circular quantum dot (QD), taking into account the Razhba spin-orbit interaction (SOI), an exact energy spectrum is obtained. For a small SOI constant, the eigenfunctions of the QD are found. It is shown that the application of a radiation field with circular polarization removes the Kramers degeneracy of the QD eigenstates. Effective spin polarization of electrons transmitted through the QD owing to a radiation field with circular polarization is demonstrated. (C) 2001 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica".

Mechanisms of dissipation in a Josephson medium based on a high-temperature superconductor in a magnetic field

Аннотация: This paper reports on the results of an investigation into the influence of magnetic fields (0-60 kOe) on the temperature dependences of the electrical resistance R(T) of the Y3/4Lu1/4Ba2Cu3O7 + CuO composites. The structure of these composites is considered to be a network of tunnel-type Josephson junctions in which a nonsuperconducting component (CuO) forms boundaries (barriers) between high-temperature superconducting crystallites. The temperature dependence R(T) of the composites has two steps characteristic of granular superconductors: (i) an abrupt change in the electrical resistance at the critical temperature of high-temperature superconducting crystallites and (ii) a smooth transition to the superconducting state under the influence of the boundaries between the crystallites. The experimental dependences R(T) are analyzed within the Ambegaokar-Halperin model of thermal fluctuations in Josephson junctions and the flux creep model. An increase in the magnetic field leads to a crossover from the Ambegaokar-Halperin mechanism to the flux creep mechanism. The temperature dependences R(T) in the range of weak magnetic fields (from 0 to 10(2) Oe) are adequately described by the relationship following from the Ambegaokar-Halperin model. In the range of strong magnetic fields (from 10(3) to 6 x 10(4) Oe), the dissipation obeys the Arrhenius law R similar to exp(-U(H)/T)], which is characteristic of the flux creep model with a temperature-independent pinning energy U(H). The effective Josephson coupling energies and the pinning energies corresponding to the Ambegaokar-Halperin and flux creep mechanisms are determined.

Аннотация: Conventional magnetic and transport measurements of the melt-grown mixed-valence manganite (La0.4Eu0.6)(0.7)Pb0.3MnO3 have been supplemented by a magnetic resonance study. The experimental data support the model of two magnetic phases coexisting in the crystal volume. At a temperature T-*, which is well above Curie temperature T-C, ferromagnetic clusters appear in the sample. These ferromagnetic regions possess a higher conductivity in comparison with the paramagnetic background (majority phase). On cooling through T-C, the magnetization of the spatially confined ferromagnetic clusters of the minority phase freezes in random directions with respect to the magnetization of the ferromagnetic majority phase due to the difference of the exchange interactions at the phase boundaries from the intraphase interactions in sign and value. Such a mixed state is responsible for the observed magnetic glassylike behavior of the system that is characteristic of inhomogeneous magnets. The fluctuations of the magnetic coupling value and sign in the sample volume are related to strong competition between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, which, in turn, results from the quenched disorder caused by the random chemical replacement of the perovskite A site of the manganite. A phase-separation state comprised of two different ferromagnetic phases has been used to account for the colossal magnetoresistance phenomenon and the magnetic-field-driven nonlinear conduction found in the crystal.

Аннотация: The temperature dependences of the specific magnetization sigma and the electrical resistivity rho of Me (x) Mn1 - x S single crystals (Me= Co, Gd; x= 0.05) have been studied in the temperature range 80 K T 1000 K. The samples under study have revealed the presence of a spontaneous magnetic moment below the N,el temperature (T (N)) and ferromagnetic clusters in Gd0.05Mn0.95S in the temperature range 146 K T 680 K. Substitution of gadolinium for manganese initiates a transition from p-type to n-type conduction. The change in the conduction type is accompanied by an increase in the electrical resistivity at 300 K by approximately one order of magnitude and, accordingly, by a decrease in the activation energy. The magnetic and electrical properties of the crystals under study have been interpreted in terms of the cluster model with temperature-dependent ferromagnetic exchange and an electron localized in this cluster.
